I love this place. All you could ask for in a dive. Friendly bar, cheap drinks, kind of quiet aside from the other two guys talking about how "in" the bush is... "It's like 70s porn all over again!" Was convinced to go here by friends. Took caltrains, went the wrong way and wound up by the race track in pitch darkness. Scary scary. Inside Steamie's the servers are friendly but seem to be on the edge of tears -- they were going to order food (I guess for free) but we demurred and they seemed really sad we weren't going to stay. The drinks are VERY strong. So if you ever want to take over a bar with a group of friends, this is a place. read more

It was pretty crackin for a Wed night! Ages span from 21 - 62 hahah. There are two dartboards and a pool table. The place is a-ok, with a jukebox that is usually playing. There is a fireplace, but it gets too warm a bit. Checked this place out during a caltrain pub crawl that my friends and I did on a Saturday. Chose to go here because of the sign and closeness to caltrain, as well as the fact that they have a shot ski. When we walked in, the bartender told us she did not have a shot ski and although we pointed to the ski over her head, she said "we don't use that" and we were forced to give up on our hour long journey for the shot ski. Next time we will stick with the Old Pro. We tried to go to a new place and it did not work so well. However, they do seem to have a small group of regulars, popcorn, a pool table, and darts. My favorite bar in San Mateo - Russ and I are fans. Setting sun fills the bar with light so for a dive bar, it's very un-divey. Tap list is ok - I like to drink whatever is available from Devils Canyon Brewing out of Belmont. High-Life is a solid happy hour deal, too. Peanuts are from the can and great - they do their job and keep you drinking. This spot has its regulars but newcomers are welcome - last time, they even invited Sample the dog in to hang out. We stopped in during baseball season and location was a bit unusual and seating was awkward; however, bartender kept us entertained, as well as the big screens. Pool table available for billiards. Found this place on yelp as I was looking for a good place to hang out with a good friend after 9 pm on a Monday in San Mateo. Not a lot of places are open that late! I really liked the vibe - clean, bright, lots of windows; super friendly patrons who made us feel welcome as soon as we walked in and chatted with us, invited us to play pool; a very friendly bartender Dan who really made sure we liked our drinks; and cheap drinks! This really felt like a neighborhood bar. If only this was in my neighborhood! Pool table, new plasma Tv's, a few lounge chairs and mostly bar stools. Tiny place. This bar is really hard to get to. There's a crappy pool table with bad sticks and a dart board that is in the way if there are ppl trying to play both. The bar is ok, not too bad of a selection. I want to say the place is 450sqft max (~30ft x less than 15ft?). There are usuals there that will come up to you to talk when they are wasted. The bar tender said that she could not serve him cause he had to wait 8 hours to "officially" be 21! I called ABC the next day and they CALLED BS! I live local to this place and WILL never go back. Dive bar. Drunkie post so pardon are typos.Only one dart board and darts are jaxed up.Small place but the place has really easy parking and cute. Caltrain near if you don't want to drive. I would suggest being your own darts. We had three beers, two martinis, and a red bull and gin on a Friday night for $22. Great prices. May have miss a few drinks. Pool $1 a game but only one table. Darts was free. All types of people but ended up making friend with a few people. Free popcorn. Nothing state up the art but if you are someone that is easy going and like dive bar this is a fun place. Fun date night for someone that been a relationship for a well. This is a cool dive bar in San Mateo. I think if we lived closer I'd be more inclined to become a regular but because it's located right off the Caltrain stop, I'm usually in a rush to get home and don't really get a chance to stop in as much as I'd like. I think that this place would be worthy of a fourth star if they served sommmmmme kinda of food. Any bar food would be better than none. Especially if you're waiting for the train on the weekend that comes once and hour. There's nothing fancy on tap or behind the bar. Just a good old whiskey-beer place with a pool table and stale popcorn. I think the place gets poppin during significant sports games, although the crowd is probably more divey than a typical sports bar. read more

The price for the drinks is GREAT and the place has a bit of charm. However, the experience there was totally ruined for my friends and I when I women walked in drunk and screaming profanities. I would expect no less of this dive style bar, but the situation became more intense when a fight started to break out between this same women and another man at the bar. I was surprised that after walking in yelling and initiating this fight that this lady was not kicked out of the bar. In fact the whole situation was pretty much ignored by the bar tender. The poor guy, who I hear was vicitim of some slapping, had to be the one to leave the bar. I love a cheap drink as much as the next person but not enough to go back to this bar for at least a couple of months. read more

Ahhh, Steamies. Makes me miss Bay Meadows, but this bar is my numero uno watering hole in San Mateo. Hard to get to, which makes it awesome, and keeps the "riff raff" away. Solid pours, great spot for watching the Giants and Niners, and the customers and bartenders are just nice enough to make sure you behave yourself, which is key at ones local drinking establishment. Another local dive bar that is walking distance to my house but I have never been. The neighbors always come here but until last week we never stopped in. Now 1 week later we have been there 3 times. Not trying to be come a daily regular but the drinks are cheap, the owners and staff are awesome and better yet I can walk home from here. Well my husband and I are always looking for a cool place to play pool and granted this was a Sunday so places that weren't totally dead were limited.. Chill little neighborhood bar. Josie the daytime bartender is just about the sweetest lady you could ever hope to meet. Also, they seem to be one of the few places on the peninsula that always has Fernet and Glenlivet in stock, big plus in my book.
