I remember when Steed's Jewelers used to be off Columbiana Road. They are now nestled in the Park South Shopping Center between Diplomat Deli and Kingdom Comics off Montgomery Hwy in Vestavia. When you walk in you are greeted by a beautiful showroom complete with a luxurious couch, coffee table, casual music and wonderful scents. It turns out they also sell a large assortment of scented candles and paraphernalia. I even bought one of the candles when I left. I have a rather new Citizen watch that was originally sold with a rubber diver's watch band. A few months ago I brought it to another jewelry store in Hoover. They found a matching replacement metal watch band and replaced the rubber watch band. Last week I had a little accident where my watch caught the edge of a counter. The watch band itself did not break but the band/bracelet separated from the watch case. I was told by Dale that the last jeweler used the wrong spring bars that were too small for the lug ends of my watch. This made a weak "link" to my case and probably contributed to its separation during my accident. He patiently explained that since this band wasn't made specifically for this watch, care should've been taken in making the best fit. He used appropriately sized spring bars and made some modifications so that the band would fit better against the lug ends. And he did all that for $5. Don't let their posh interior and ambiance fool you. Dale and his staff are good people that go out of their way for their patrons. They really want to earn your business. Whether you're just there for a simple band repair, battery replacement or have a complicated repair that only skilled jewelers can tackle, give them a shot. They are master craftsmen. They carry your typical range of rings, bracelets, and even though I only saw Seiko and Pulsar watches in their showcase, they can order just about any timepiece or jewelry brand you desire. They do not even deserve one star. I took a family heirloom diamond ring into Steed's for sizing and an insurance appraisal. I was treated extremely rudely by the men in the store. From the start, like they were doing me a favor just letting me walk in the door. Their appraisal downgraded the diamond considerably from an earlier appraisal from another jeweler in another state. When I asked why, the man was so rude and said "it is just not a good diamond". So I took it to three others jewelers in town after paying Steed's $85 for their "appraisal" and the interesting thing is all three agreed with the original rating of the diamond and could not believe Steed's appraisal. I will never go back to Steed-rude and condescending! read more

Called to get an appraisal on a ring. They were incredibly rude, wanted me to leave the ring for a week, and when I expressed some hesitancy, they said "we're not the jeweler for you" and literally hung up on me. I wonder if they realize the business that they just lost. I am looking for someone to do enhance a ring by adding some diamonds, and they just blew their chance at some serious business. Arrogant, rude and condescending attitude. I brought in a piece of jewelry with a loose stone and inquired about tightening it in the setting. Not only did they refuse to work on it, they actually told me that the entire piece was worth nothing and I can just go ahead and discard it. Needless to say, two other jewelers in town considered this job a minor, routine repair, and spoke highly of the quality and durability of the setting. Steed's just lost a lot of future business as I'm a diamond junkie and live in the neighborhood so I would have definitely become a loyal customer had they treated me differently. read more

Aloof, arrogant and rude. If you want a fair price and good customer service, AVOID Steeds. Two other area jewelers could have done the simple stone settings for about $200 less. Lee took my order and gave me an estimate of $800. He said he could probably get the final cost to below $800. Called to arrange pick up and was told $879. When I arrived an hour later the cost had risen to $900. Against better judgement I paid it and left. Never to return. I'd walk across Interstate 65 on my knees before I would ever do business with these jerks again. High Priced, Poor Customer service. Avoid Steeds Jewelers! read more
