Fun spacious place. Even on busy days there's a ton of room. Small dog park isn't usually busy or used and on occasion I'll see older or very excitable dogs using it. People are really friendly. Only recommendation is more seating areas. Large dog park can use more shaded spots or at least more seats in the shaded areas. read more

This park was recommended by a local and to dare I have frequented this park 3 times. However, I not sure if it's the best dog park in Phoenix. The pros: Parking Fairly large Picnick tables and chairs Shade, not much, but anything helps. The cons: The pictures show a large, lush grassy field. This is not the case. More on the lines of a large dust bowl. Maybe the time of year or water shortage. 3 stars for the dust (your car will hate you) and lack of dog wash, though a rarity they do exist at dog parks. Wags N Wash is fairly close and will be glad for your business. Regardless, the dog didn't know the difference. read more

Small Dog Park : North of Large Dog Park. I suggest to park on the east side of the park (it's closer to the dog parks) compared to the west side (or Main) parking lot. Tons of space for dogs to play catch as it's long. The park is wider at its east side and tapers down towards the west side. Never had an issue at this small dog park. Not so much green lush grass. Better than big dog park. Large Dog Park: Just south of small dog park. This park is a big square. Perfect for playing catch and minding your own business. I've seen too many stupid dog owners that let dogs scuffle. So be aware. read more

This is a review for the small dog side of the park (for dogs less than 20 lbs). We really liked how big and grassy it was! My dogs loved the balance of shade and sun and, for the most part, had fun playing with other small dogs. The park was clean and not too busy on a Saturday morning. Parking was easy, with a short walk by the big dog park to get to the small dog park. During our first visit here, one dog got really rough with one of my pups and we decided to leave. Please remember that you should be entirely in control of your dog before bringing them to a park. ANY aggressive behavior can be dangerous for others- dogs and owners alike. read more

There's fishing ponds and dog parks and basketball courts and volleyball courts and much more!! I like Steele Indian School Dog Park, particularly when viewed within the larger context of the Steele Indian School Park. It's a great place to take your dogs for a walk around the park and then let them loose for a run in the fenced area. The dog park has all the essentials: Fence. Bags. Water. Shade. Picnic benches. Some grass. A suggestion about parking. You can park in any of the Steele parking lots and walk to the north and east to find the dog facility. If you're not in a mood for walking, the only entrance to the dog park parking lot is found off of Seventh Street (just north of the VA Hospital). I didn't even know there was a Seventh Street entrance to Steele until I searched for it. There are separate areas for small dogs and large dogs. While admittedly not based on a large number of visits, the small dog area seems a lot busier. Perhaps an urban park frequented mainly by small urban apartment dogs or just my bad luck. Don't know. Still, the large dog area is busy enough weekdays after 5:00 and on weekends. The Friends of Hance Dog Park, another a City of Phoenix facility, is located nearby if you are looking for alternatives. read more

Steele Indian School Dog Park is located in the northeast corner of Steele Indian School park. The closest entrance to the dog park is off of 7th Street between Indian School Road and the canal. The park has separate areas for large and small dogs. The large dog area is currently being renovated with new turf, so both large and small dogs are sharing the small dog area. There is grass and buckets for water, but no running water in the small dog area. I hear there is access to water in the large dog area. But, right now, you should probably bring your own water. There are shade trees and a few chairs and tables for the humans, too. Most of the owners are pretty responsible for cleaning up after their dogs. And I've not seen any aggressive dogs during the times that I've been there. The dog park near the Tempe Sports area had a lot of dog fights. This is a well-maintained dog park for anyone in central Phoenix. I definitely recommend taking your dog here for some play time. :) read more

My puppy loves coming here! There's lots of friendly people that pet him, and he gets to run wild with their dogs! The park is huge, securely fenced in, and there's a water fountain and water bowls for all the thirsty pups. I take Duke here when he's full of crazy puppy energy, and take him home exhausted. Some park benches would be great, and maybe some poop bag dispensers. But overall, it's a great place, and my puppy and I are a big fan! read more

Came in a Saturday around 9am. This park is much smaller than the other dog parks in the area. It is a little hard to find since it's tucked in to the larger park. There was little grass but most of it was dead. Still better than most parks where it is all dirt. read more

The park is large with nice lake in center, but this review is for the dog park. The closest parking is off 7th, unmarked street. It is immediately south of high school athletic field. I haven't been to many dog parks to compare but I must say I felt like I needed a shower after visiting. They have areas for large and small dogs. We were in the large dog area. Some shade, a few rickety chairs and lots of open space. Also lots of dog doo inside fence and around parking area. Bring your own bag. Water available. read more

We took our friendly dog to this park for the second time on Friday 12/10/21 evening when a woman and her dog with the EXACT same description as the previous reviewer showed up shortly after. Within 30 seconds of her dog entering the park, it was latched onto our dog's neck and would not let go for at least a whole minute, and she wasn't doing much of anything to get her dog off. We sought emergency vet services for the gash in our pup's neck, and now our dog has stitches and is on antibiotics. Most of the dog owners at this park are friendly however there apparently are a handful of irresponsible owners with untrained dogs that come here. read more

I've been switching off between taking my dogs here and Friends of Hance dog park for about 3 months and this is a great park with some really great people. Pros: large and small dogs can be separated, big open area, close parking, nice people, some seating, open til 10, water, trash cans. Cons: sometimes there's mud, too many dark spots at night (it can be scary). Tip: entrance is off of 7th street just before the high school. Until the end of October (2017), the dog park has been moved to the Central Ave entrance (note: there is no water or seating there). read more

Too many dogs and owners not cleaning up after their dogs. There aren't any trash cans to dispose of dog poop only up in the front entrance. Also, for dog owners that do not bring bags their arent any there either making the poop situation worst. There are other parks that are better than this one. The park itself is beautiful but the dog park is not my favorite. read more

UPDATE: I just spoke to a woman at Phx Parks & Recreation who advised calling the police when owners of big dogs bring their dogs into the small dog side. ~~~ I used to love bringing my dogs here but lately too many people are bringing their big dogs into the small dog side. Phoenix parks maintenance: Do you even go to a dog park in your lifetime? More than one trashcan is needed. How come Washington Park ( smaller,) gets 3 cans and Indian School ( larger) gets one in the small dog park? Can you please, please Clean up the entry way...Hose it down with something strong and disease and bacteria killing like bleach. Actually get off the golf cart and scrub the entryway with a scrub brush. And Lysol the gate handles. Phx Parks: Encourage patrons to pick up the raw sewage their very own Buffy is leaving behind, because each turd could have leptospirosis, ecoli, and a host of other organisms I don't want going home with me on the bottom of my shoe. Try educational signage to start. Phx pet owners: I'm not your poop fairy. If your dog poops, please scoop. Yeah, I'll call you out on it, so you better bring grocery sacks. Be prepared. Okay. This place just plain sucks. No water stations inside the park,lousy turf,almost no shade and almost no place to sit. I never know when it's going to be open or not. It's hit and miss like the reliability of a 2 bit crack dealer. Why 3 stars? Because people who come here tend not to be stark raving assholes like elsewhere and they actually let their dogs be....dogs.... It's a real dog park now!!!! I went back to the Steele Park Dog Park after reading the more recent Yelp reviews and decided I should give this place a fifth chance...and I am glad that I did! I am happy to report that there are two large grass area fenced off for big dogs and little dogs. This is also the hep place to be for Central Phoenix dog owners, as there were about 15 other pet parents present. Good upgrade, City of Phoenix, now let's work on that mythical Downtown Dog Park!! read more

Unfriendly dog park. There are women here that think it's their private dog park and have no problem telling you if they think you should leave. My dog is 1.5 years old and a mini Aussie shepherd. He gets a little excitable but is a friendly dog. He went to get a drink and a couple other dogs approached him and he barked at them trying to protect himself to tell them they needed to back off. Some woman with six dogs walks up to me telling me my dog needs to leave because he's causing fights. Drama queen. I took him and left. When I got him, found that he had gotten bitten by the other dogs when getting a drink Nasty nasty park. I've taken him to numerous other public places and have never gotten that kind of feed back. If you dare take your dogs here but make sure to get your shots with Parvo going around in the valley. read more

Marathon training season is in full swing, and I couldn't let a little detail like being away from Chicago get in the way of my Sunday long run. My friends recco'ed this park because it's right near where they live, and it has a path for runners/joggers/dogwalkers. Before I get into my review of the park itself, I have a serious question for Phoenix runners: HOW DO YOU DO IT? I went for an early morning run, thinking I'd beat the heat, and spent less time in my "zone" and more time looking for water fountains. Seriously, I have deep, deep respect for those of you who run in that heat on a regular basis. The great thing about this park is that there are PLENTY of water fountains. I was very happy to discover that water can be found at least every 1/8 mile, and sometimes more frequently. The fountains attached to buildings (the park office, etc.) have really cold water, too. Love. An extra bonus about the park is that there are a couple of hills. I've been craving some hill workouts recently because Chicago is super flat, and there are these two giant mounds in the middle of the park (near the playground area) which are just perfect for those. One side of each hill has stairs built into the grass, which means extra variety. I obviously went for my run sans dog, but I think this would be a perfect spot to let your best friend run around. There's a small-dog area, lots of twisty paths, and much grass for doggies to roll around on. The early morning dogwalkers I ran into seemed very friendly and nice. read more

This "dog park" is a joke. Steele Indian School Park is huge and all they can offer the dogs is a small GRAVEL hill?? Dogs need GRASS...or at least dirt to run in!! I really wish the city would move the fence so the off-leash area would include some of the large grass field that is adjacent to it so I could actually take my dog to this park to play!! read more

I really like this park a lot. I love the desert landscape in the off leash area. When we are ready for new adventures, we walk on leash in the grassy part of the park. The park is relatively clean. There is usually a nice mix of people and dogs at this park. Sam really likes to play here a lot. read more

As with Steele Indian School Park, I'm surprised by the low rating. However, several reviews are from a few years ago, so I'm assuming they've updated the park and the dog park a lot. There's two dog parks, once for big dogs and one for smaller dogs. Both are large, with lots of grass and picnic tables for people to sit. I would bring your own bag to pick up after your dog and your own water. The big dog park tends to hold water after it rains, so it can get a little muddy, but the small dog park doesn't seem to have this issue. Really nice! I'll be bringing my dog back. read more

Phoenix's first off-leash dog park, paid for primarily through private fundraising. This is a nicer-than-average dog park, with secure fencing, "mutt mitt" dispensers and waste receptacles, benches, water fountains and shade structures, with space for both large and small dogs. One star because I'm comparing it to the one in Scottsdale. This place is sketch-ee!!! Dimly lit, so the only dog I'd bring here is a German Shepherd or Doberman... and that's to protect me! Since I have a tiny Morkie, I pack my 9mm instead. Like most dog parks there's a big/active dog section and a little/passive section. Thanks for the signage City of Phoenix, too bad no one pays attention. Big dogs in the small dog section ALL THE TIME. Usually what I end up doing is driving here (5 minutes away) to feel it out, and then 9 out of 10 times I make the 20 minute drive to Scottsdale. One star awarded because it exists. That's about it. On a nice day it's worth walking around the area. There's a cool duck pond nearby. I'll rate that separately. read more

This is a fenced, off-leash dog park. It is nice because there are two areas - one for big dogs and one for little dogs. When I went, the big dog park was closed, so people were bringing their big dogs in, but luckily it wasn't a problem. It's fairly new, so a lot of things aren't grown in yet. I don't remember many areas of shade, but there is one area with a bench to sit at. There is a good amount of running area and a gravel area with boulders for dogs who like to climb. So why the 3 stars then you ask? I didn't see a spicket where you could get water. I understand that water isn't free and that we should be responsible enough to bring water, but lots of other parks in the valley have this. Overall not a bad place to go, just bring some water! read more

We've never had a super bad experience here, however we've seen some small dog fights, it's nothing but dirt which is hard on dogs, makes everything dirty and muddy and just inconvenient, they don't put bowls out for the dogs and there's only one ground water fountain. Well, we've been waiting since the end of April for the grand re-opening of the large dog park here - lots of excavating, drilling and new grass. It reopened on July 5th. And now that the rains have come, the park is a muddier mess than ever before - mud and pools of water hidden beneath some thin grass. Help! Kona loved the ankle-deep muddy waters and he and several other dogs morphed into brown muddy pachiderms, while splashing around in this mess. We all had to shampoo our dogs that morning. Is there nothing the park folks can do? This is a basin and will always stay wet and muddy - the grass will soon be gone again. The grass small dog Park is not kept up regularly by the city, and my puppy leaves with a good 30 burrs in each of her legs, body and ears if she plays on the wrong side of the park. Be very careful. I've had her for a year, and this is the only small dog park in central PHX that is awful for burrs. Washington is better. Hopefully the City will work to regularly water and irritate the grass to prevent burrs. read more

Coming from Tucson, this is about the nicest dog park I have ever seen. Spacious and grassy (such a concept!) with ample parking right outside the dog park. We've been going here for about 6 mo. now and I would generalize the owners here as responsible with their pets and the cleanup. Sure, there can be some outliers, but I always feel relaxed having my dogs here. When the big dog park floods out (how hard it is for the city to just put in a drain, I don't understand), everyone goes to the small dog park and I've never seen an issue or even a concerned small dog owner face. I can be a bit of a pain with traffic, as the parking is only off of 7th St, but otherwise there is no reason to pick anywhere else. read more

The small dog side has been renovated. There is now grass and the scrubby bushes have been taken away (trees were left and trimmed). It was still locked when I last went (7/8/11) but I'm sure it'll be open soon. I'm assuming that they're similarly going to upgrade the big dog side. I'll probably still keep going although I'm sure it'll get overrun with dog owners and their dogs who couldn't handle running on gravel. Hopefully it'll be kept clean but I doubt it. City of Phoenix- if you're paying attention to Yelp reviews (which I'm assuming you are since you caved and installed water-wasting grass), dog/human water fountains and a dog bath station would be nice. I used to love going here but now it's starting to suck - regarding the large dog area. There are two times you can take a dog to the dog park during the Phoenix summers - early morning and evening. But, if you choose mornings, be prepared to deal with TONS of mud and huge holes filled with mud/water. They over-water the HELL out of this park and they must do it right before sunrise. I don't know why they wouldn't water during the very late/early hours and I don't know why they refrain from over-watering the dirt areas - which of course turn to mud. Why are you watering mud???!?!? Be prepared to give your dog a bath after going to this park in the morning. So frustrating. It's like their main landscaper is clueless about what they are doing or that they aren't paying attention to what problems they are causing. My recommendation: Go to Hance park. Even if it's further away. That's what I'm doing now. read more

Disclaimer: I am nervous bringing my dog to dog parks, as when he was a puppy he was severely attacked at a dog park in Glendale. Very traumatic experience. We came to Indian School Park with the idea of giving this dog park a try. We came when it was cooler, right around dusk. Our dog was feeling pretty hyper so we walked him around the park on the leash, and went up and down some hills in the effort to get some energy out. When we felt he was calm enough, we approached the dog park area, not knowing the layout. We walked first past the little dog park. The dogs came to the fence and were sniffing at first, but then some little dogs got excited and started barking at him. This attracted the attention of 2 particularly aggressive big dogs, who came to the fence and started barking, too. Our dog was now being barked at from both sides (mind you, he was not barking back or showing any signs of aggression AT ALL). We were barked at the entire way around the park by these 2 big dogs. The owner only came near us towards the end, when she halfheartedly called her dogs toward her. They didn't come. If it were me, I would have gotten a toy or treat to distract them, or maybe called out a "Sorry!" in our direction. Nope. She just gave up and walked away. It was at that point we decided not to enter the park. Her dogs seemed really mean, and we didn't want to risk another attack. Which is too bad, because the other big dogs seemed nice and calm. This has been my experience with dog parks - one or several inconsiderate owners ruin it for everyone. Dog parks are for well-trained, docile and friendly dogs looking to stretch their legs and run around, perhaps making new friends in the process. It is not for ill-trained, unsocialized dogs who you are too lazy to train. read more
