My first time at Stefano's. My Risotto Frutti di Mare was excellent. One friend had Veal Parm which was a very good sized portion. My friends' calzones were big and the pasta dishes were delicious. Will definitely return and have already recommended this place to others. read more

In the never-ending quest for great veal parm, my mom and I decided to try Stefano's, mostly because I have old restaurant.com certificates to use up and this place is near her house. We were familiar with the location as it used to be a neighborhood watering hole. Pub atmosphere. I like that. Walking into the very noisy bar (girls night out and they were having a very good time!), the young bartender gave us a smile and cheery hello. Then the hostess/dining room server came out with a silent sneer. We asked if we could sit in the dining room. "Sit where you want." These days I'm trying really hard to maintain my peace, control my emotions and not react. (Everyone's got something going on in life, right?) But, boy, was she testing my resolve. SERENITY NOW! As you can see, we were the only ones in the dining room, which was off of the bar area. It was chilly, but a space heater warmed the room, and the server whose attitude improved over the course of the dinner. The salad was simple but fresh and tasty. The bread was fresh, warm and tasty. The veal parm was excellent and exactly what we'd been looking for. The sautéed broccoli... not for me. Sautéed in olive oil and garlic, it was too soggy. I took it home and used it in a pasta dish, but this was an $8.50 mistake. Bottom line, Stefano's is a legit Italian restaurant, with high quality food. Reasonably priced. We skipped drinks, but in retrospect, we probably should have imbibed, or joined the ladies at the bar. read more

One of those places where everything on the menu sounds good. I ended up getting the Seafood Bruschetta (house toasted bread topped with bruschetta mix, smoked salmon, and baby shrimp) for an appetizer and the Penne Chef Piero (swordfish pieces, baby shrimp and sun dried tomatoes sautéed with oil and garlic in brandy cream sauce tossed with penne pasta) for my entree. Salt When used properly it's without question the best flavor enhancer for food. When overused or abused it can turn the finest ingredients into a complete pile of crap. The problem at Stefano's is that the chef here apparently has a bromance with the salt shaker and it really ruined what could have been good stuff. To start we got the Mozzarella Caprese. Simple enough and several Italian places in the area do a version of it (although to me The Vineyard still does it best) yet this version had a big problem with it. The sauce was very salty. I mean the garlic and basil both added good flavor but everything was drowned out by the flavor of salt. The salads were...meh. One tiny little tomato cut it half on a sea of mostly sad and wilted yellow lettuce with a lot of cabbage thrown in for color. I opted for the chicken parm and surprisingly the salt level was not that bad. The problem was that the dish itself didn't taste like much. Now granted that very well could have been because my taste buds had already been blasted by the salt from the appetizer or maybe the chicken really was that bland. I'll never know. The lovely wife tried some kind of penne dish that came with ham and peas (I don't know the name because their website is inactive and the one listed on restaurant.com is a few years old both in terms of prices/what is actually on the current menu) and it was a complete salty mess. Not only did it taste like pure salt but the plate had almost a ring of salt around the outer perimeter like it was supposed to be there as some kind of a garnish. What it equates to is that her food bordered on being completely inedible. Keep in mind that it wasn't like there was a rush seeing as in the dining room we were the only ones there. In the end it only further reinforces the obvious that while picking places off of restaurant.com can sometimes deliver good value, at other times you can see why the places that are on that site are indeed on that site and it usually involves making food that is highly, highly flawed yet is getting passed off as perfect normal. After this salty fiasco we obviously skipped any dessert although the menu itself is very uninspired and boring by mostly playing to the idea that almost everything needs to be all chocolate all the time. This was the worst Italian restaurant ever dined at. music was blasting in the bar which was connected to the dining area not relaxin. waitress had no personality and was removing plates without even asking if we were done. Ordered the shrimp and scallops 3 shrimp and 3 scallops for 25.00 crazy. I had veal parmigiana and it was tough as shoe leather had to ask for a stake knife to cut it. We've been to Stefano's a couple of times now & i have come to appreciate their consistency. The wait staff is a mix of more tenured servers paired with younger people learning the business. Overall, the system works fine: timely refills and the like. The food quality is very good; their marinara is solid, and in fact they sell it "to go". The veal is the best I've had in the valley. This is what our waitress said to us when we sat down, on a Friday night: "How are you? Don't ask me how I am because I don't know. We didn't expect this tonight, it's been non-stop since 5:30. I don't even know what I'm doing." I looked around and saw the medium-sized room half-full, and said, "You didn't expect people to come to the restaurant on a Friday night?" This set the tone for our dinner. We've eaten at Stefano's other location many times, and it's never been one of my favorite restaurants. This location used to be "Sweet Basil" run by one of the Stefano's owners, and for whatever reason they renamed it and re-worked the menu so it's similar to the Linden Street location. The food is blah, the bread is blah, the service is blah. The wine was good! The pasta dish I ordered was to have sundried tomatoes and sweet sausage in it. It was like a pound of pasta with like 3 little slices of tomatoes and a few little chunks of sausage. I wouldn't make food like this at home, and here I am, paying for it. The valley doesn't need another blah Italian restaurant, but judging by the crowd there, maybe people don't care. Their signs say, "Traditional Italian Taste with a Sicilian Flair." and also they will have "wood burning pizza" soon just as their Linden St. location does. read more

Got the Penne Vodka and added Salmon for dinner and the sauce was very watery and tasteless. I sent it back and got the sauce thickened, which they happily did. Dish came back and it was still bland and tasteless. The vodka sauce is one of my favorites and had it in other Italian restaurants. This was the worst I have ever had. However, my dessert was good. I got the Profiteroles Glass and it was delicious. As for the atmosphere, it was relaxed but the owner is somewhat unprofessional sitting at the bar and talking about guests (in a backhanded way) to friends/other guests. Service tonight was polite, new people in training, so we were overly attended, which is ok, and we were told there was training going on. Pizza crust nice and thin but sauce just fell flat. You will need the oregano, etc. I honestly prefer when I need not to add seasoning at the table. I always taste before I start sprinkling. Only one place has nailed that, Palermos. Overall, a nice experience. Dining room. Very air conditioned, so we sat out outside which was very nice. Prices a bit high for anything other than a pizza. If I am going to pay that much for an entree there, it better be amazing, and I am not sure based on the sauce on the pizza. Would I return? My husband and I got there around 4:30 on a Tuesday afternoon. We were the only people there the entire time, we were there until about 5:15. I realize it was early but I don't know if I've ever been anywhere where there are absolutely zero other patrons at all. This should have told us something. Our waitress, Jill was very friendly. She got us our drinks right away, but we had to ask after about 15 minutes if they had any bread basket or something of the sort. She said yes and she brought out a basket of warm but boring sesame-seed bread (strange if you ask me for an Italian joint). It was accompanied by a bowl of tomato based sauce, it was okay. It annoyed me to no end that we hadnt been served this without asking. I ordered a chicken steak wrap (I had to ask what that meant). It was chicken chopped up like a Philly steak. It had lettuce, tomato and raw onion with a TAD of mayo on a flour tortilla. When I tell you that there was no flavor whatsoever besides the onion, this is no exaggeration at all. Not one flake of pepper, not one grain of salt, no marinades, nothing. Wow was it bland as sh*t. My husband ordered a pepperoni calzone. It was stuffed with mozzarella (as it should be) but also ricotta, which I've never seen before and I've had a ton of calzones (in chi-town) Maybe it's an east coast thing? He liked it, I wasn't a fan, although I can't ever say I don't like anything that involves cheese. I LOVE cheese. One odd thing was that it seems like this used to be a residence at some point. and it sounded like someone still lives upstairs-it literally sounded like 5 or 6 kids running around the entire time, im talking they shook all of the many chandeliers. it was constant and it interrupted our conversation many times. if i could take off a half star for this, i would. A suggestion to management/owners-give the upstairs "day care center" kids certain playtime hours,or at least ban them to the space above the kitchen or bar area. we were totally aware of the noise for the whole meal. Went to Stefano's on a Sunday, looking forward to a good Italian meal. Had wings that were breaded, drowned in Frank's hot sauce, soggy with no flavor. The bread came out and was a doughy seeded bread nothing close to Italian bread. Salad came out one small little tomato, lettuce, onion and carrot, poor Italian salad. Chicken parm entree came out sauce was watery with hard pasta, two fried pieces of chicken that were overcooked and when i took off the breading chicken was as thin as a piece of paper. Not what i expected for $19.50. Worst Italian meal I ever had. Would have been better getting Stauffers frozen chicken parm. Would have had more flavor. 1 to 10, I would rate this a zero. Don't waste you money. Two other patrons there that were complaining about their meals. Good luck serving food like this. Won't be in business long. read more

A great spot for some pretty good Italian food. On our recent visit we just had an appetizer, and two sandwiches which were very good. Our server Julia was extremely friendly and courteous. For our appy we had the calamari, it was fantastic especially with their homemade chunky marinara sauce. We even bought one to take home. Definitely a return visit is in our future. read more

Went here with my wife after work to get dinner. I had chicken fantasy and she had a steak dish. The salads looked like they came straight from a bag. The bread was ok. Both our meals were sub-par at best. I would have rather gone to a local diner to eat. The portions are on the smaller side, the food was heavily salted, and seamed to be pre made rather than cooked fresh. Needless to say, we will not be coming back anytime soon even though it is close to our house. DO NOT GET MIXED DRINKS HERE !!! unsanitary bartending - they use the bottom of the glass, used for shaking the mixed drink, to strain the ice when pouring, even though the strainers they SHOULD be using are right there...how GROSSSSSS!!! the bartender plays with her hair, checks her cell, and handles money, then holds the bottom of the glass when shaking the drink then removes the glass, flips it over and puts it into the steel shaker to strain the ice .... Worst Italian Food I ever have had! I got linguini clams in white wine sauce. The white wine sauce was more like water and there were little sharp pieces of claims shells in the pasta making it difficult and painful to eat. I was back tonight with my husband tonight. I absolutely LOVE this place. My husband had the shrimp and scallop skewers (because I raved about how good they were). We shared an appetizer of scallops on toast points topped w/bruchetta. I had the salmon special, salmon del ray over a bed of angel hair wtih roasted red peppers and spinach. Our waitress tonight was Danille. As always, the service there is wonderful. The staff there is all so friendly.
