Eggs done right, grits were tasty, 3 bacon strips a bit crunchy and on the small and thin side. The biscuits were not good. Had to "saw" my way through them to split in half and they were not flakey! More like a miniature bread loaf, but, biscuit size! I'd order toast if I ate here again. (Just passing thru town). They did have real butter which was a plus and coffee refills pretty frequent. Traveling from NC to FL and wanted a sit down meal to give us a break from the car. I used Yelp and found this gem! Everything you read is spot on! We had the fried chicken and the chicken and dumplings - yum! Each meal came with 2 sides of your choice and 2 biscuits. Onion rings and sweet potato fries were crispy. Hubby got the mashed potatoes and corn nuggets. The serving size was generous and we had plenty to take with us for a snack later. And to top off the experience, the waitresses were delightful. Hubby and I were making our annual trip to Talladega for Race Weekend and wanted some place to stop for breakfast... we've passed by this place before but never stopped... today we're glad we did..! It immediately passed my Hubby's rule about cars out front, of which there were many, and lots of people coming in and out... it's a seat yourself kinda place so we took a small booth. Coffee was smooth and hot, ice water and quite the breakfast selection. Plus, no worries about the time as breakfast is served all day... I'd read a review which said the fried chicken was worth the wait, so I ordered the chicken strips and waffle - yummy... chicken batter was nicely seasoned, the strips were juicy and tender. Waffle was thick and filling... Hubby got the egg plate with a biscuit and bacon... said the grits were great... What a nice, nostalgic quintessential Southern diner. Service was super friendly and attentive. The counter and ice cream cases reminded me of the old drug stores that served burgers, floats and shakes. I chose the cooked to order fried chicken - breast, wing, with coleslaw, mashed potatoes and gravy. My husband opted for a special - A Big Mac copycat with two smash burger patties, special sauce and the ubiquitous pickle, shredded lettuce combo. He chose onion rings as a side and fried mushrooms to start. Wow, the shrooms were lightly battered, had a great crunchy bite and just bursted with juicy goodness. It was an ample serving and we were sad to leave quite a few on the plate, but we had to leave room for our mains! The chicken arrived piping hot, lightly seasoned with a golden crisp crust. I'm guessing this was a family recipe used for years. Unfortunately the meat lacked moisture. There were no juicy bites and the breast was a tad stringy. Brining would solve that issue. Nevertheless, the crust saved the day. We both loved the creamy coleslaw - it reminded us a bit of KFC but with chunkier cuts of cabbage and not as much sugar. The potatoes were quite good. The gravy helped to moisten the chicken, but unfortunately it was pretty much devoid of flavor. My husband's burger was huge! The patties were hefty unlike most smash varieties. The kitchen nailed the "Big Mac" flavors. The accompanying onion rings rocked - so lightly battered but super crunchy even when they cooled. Delicious. In the end, we thoroughly enjoyed our meals and from the empty plates returning to the kitchen it appeared the other guests did as well. Again, we've been here a couple times, last time was a couple of weeks ago. The atmosphere is typical diner, but southern style and the food is legendary. The locals are regulars. Service varies with the waitress you get. We waited a long time for our food but it was worth it. The cornbread was not up to par, I make it better myself. I challenge you to find better biscuits though. The chicken and waffles were the best I ever had. I've got nothing to compare it to, but the chicken was tender and juicy, lightly breaded, just perfect. I'm not a waffle expert but this one was excellent. Crispy and fluffy at the same time! Just what I was looking for today on our drive back to Florida, from Virginia. It's a small-ish family diner that has been around since 1948, per the waitress's T-shirts. All the Southern faves can be found here. One of the specials was bay scallops- the small sweet ones. I had that with sides of fried green tomatoes (thin sliced and batter fried) and Mac and cheese. The GOOD: food was very good. Ordered the shrimp and the catfish which were nicely grilled. Coleslaw, squash casserole, and hush puppies were tasty. Service was wonderful and friendly. HOWEVER, this place is DIRTY!!! It needs a thorough cleaning and repairing. The first thing I saw upon entering was the floor covered with food, drips,and paper. The blinds were splattered with food, dust and grease. I didn't use any condiments because containers and their contents were covered with splatters. The paint was peeling off the walls.
