Oh my, what a great dining experience! Driving from S. FL to Marietta, GA I made a stop at Captain Stan's Smokehouse in Woodbine, GA, looking for some southern comfort food. Looking from the parking lot I wasn't sure, but once I entered the premises I knew the place would at least be a fun experience. They have indoor and outdoor dining, a stage , a fountain to wash hands after some awesome tasting BBQ. That is saying a lot for me, who isn't the biggest fan of BBQ. ( I was hoping for fried liver, but was wowed by the great meal I chose!) I had the Holy Trinity, which had amazing Boston butt with baked beans and coleslaw. My side was southern comfort food: collard greens. The Boston butt was aromatic with the smoking that was done to it & tender. It had no need for any additional BBQ sauce as the baked beans added wonderful flavor topped with the crunchiness of a creamy coleslaw! Heaven in your mouth! The collard greens were a perfect addition. What I loved about the greens is they had some smoky (bacon) taste but it wasn't overpowering and salty like I've had at some places. It was just right and the perfect side to the meal. I found the portion just right for the weary traveler I was that day. The waitress was efficient and helpful in making a decision as to what to get. The ambiance was rustic country with families coming in for their dinners. The fountain they use for washing hands was a cute touch. And I even got to enjoy some live music before I left on a weeknight no less! And by the way the music was enjoyable as it wasn't blasting but added to the quaint ambience this place offers its customers. A definite need to go back there! read more

Went here for late lunch / early dinner on a weekend in the winter. The place is interesting because there were no windows and the breeze was blowing through the building. Luckily there was a space heater right next to us to provide warmth. The outdoor seating had big heaters too, but they were reluctant to turn those on. The place had a really laid-back, country ambiance, like you would imagine a bbq joint to have. There were rolls of paper towels at the tables and your food comes in a plastic tray lined with aluminum foil and some plastic silverware. I had the centercut rib meal specifically because it comes with two sides and I wanted baked-beans and collard greens. The collards were but big unlike the chopped stuff I've had in the past and were good. The baked-beans were also good and I ate most of those too. The ribs (two) looked beautiful with the bark seasoning and they tasted good too. The meal came with some bread that did not taste good and I didn't want to eat all of it. The sweet tea was fabulous and you get free refills and already comes in a styrofoam to-go cup for the win. The service was excellent. The two younger waitresses were very nice, attentive, and helpful. No problems there. We learned from them that there is live music many nights during the week in the evening from around 5-6pm to close (I think around 9pm) Although I had a great experience at Captain Stan's, I unfortunately cannot say that the food is life-changing, which is what I am looking for with BBQ. This is the real deal: a classic roadhouse with truly excellent barbecue. To make it even better there was a very good band "Midwest Riders" playing that night, playing mostly country from the 70s-80s, switching to rock with an emphasis of the southern genre on the second set. And a few of their own songs too, which were pretty good too. All the way from Michigan of all places. The specialty here is the ribs. They are heavily smoked with a substantial dark bark. Great flavor, tender, and meaty. They're served without a sauce; just the dry rub is sufficient. (Maybe there was sauce available on the side but I didn't ask.) The rib plate is a serving of 2 ribs with a choice of 2 sides. Also sliced pickled banana peppers, a nice touch. I thought 2 might not be enough so I upgraded to the half rack (5 ribs) and ate 3 and saved 2 for later. They were quite large so I probably could have made do with 2. My sides were collard greens and potato salad. The collards were kind of ordinary, but the potato salad? Wow, almost as good as my wife's, who makes the best! Potatoes not cooked down to mush, not too mayonnaisey, tangy, peppery, and crunchy from diced peppers. Good portion sizes for the sides too. No corn bread or hush puppies, unfortunately. Other barbecue items include chicken and Boston Butt. The menu makes it harder to order these as a meal (a la carte only for some reason) but it can be done. Also chili, peel&eat shrimp, oysters (when available locally) and a few things for non-barbecue lovers. I sat at the outside bar where I could easily take in the scene: the band on the stage, the cheerful warm fire in the center throwing sparks and a pleasant smoky aroma, the patrons, many of whom were in costume on this Halloween night, kids dancing to the music (surprisingly no adults), and dogs all over the place running amok and having a great time too. Speaking of the bar: don't expect craft beers or gourmet drinks here; it's all generic national brands. I had an Angry Orchard, a pretty bad cider from New York. Lingering a while to listen to the music I eventually finished with a slice of key lime pie. Adorned with nothing more than whipped cream from a can and a slice of lime it was nevertheless surprisingly good. 5 stars so far. Normally I give a pass on bad restrooms, especially in a place like this, but in this case, sadly they lost a star. I heard somebody mention the men's room needed attention and 10 minutes later I wanted to use it and found a toilet filled to overflowing, the floor soaked with water and presumably other liquids. Surprisingly no urinal (yes I was in the right room for my gender). So I decided to "hold it" and just washed my hands, getting enough soap from the nearly empty dispenser. A half hour later when I visited again the toilet was fixed and the floor mostly dry but the soap dispenser was completely empty. Isn't that something they would check at the same time they fixed the clog? This wouldn't stop me from coming back, but I sure hope the kitchen staff has access to better facilities! read more

Oh my my my my my!!! Like licking a chimney, Baby, because that's how much smoke they serve up! More excellent food in this Brunswick-to-Kingsland stretch! A disproportionate number of gifted chefs live in these parts! My husband said he's never tasted bark like that before! Man, it was so good! Yes, fell off the bone when I picked it up. So tender and smoky! The bowls were great ideas! My collards were perfect taste, texture, portion and proportion to the rest of my bowl with smoked chicken (again tasted lots of smoke) and lima beans in gravy. Such a good combo, so filling and fulfilling! My husband loved his pork, slaw and lima bowl! Tender pork, crunchy (couple kinds of cabbage) sweet coleslaw, and those buttery earthy limas! This is a little dive bar type location with mostly outdoor seating and a band stage. The drink prices were very high, $10 per premade frozen drinks served in styrofoam was unexpected. The food was decently priced though and tasted good. The problem was two of our party had bathroom issues after ordering the ribs...hard to assume that was coincidence. They tasted great and the bbq sauce options were nice but...eh. Kind of concerned about the other issue. Will consider returning and do an update. read more

Great spot for a quick afternoon lunch! Not far from the interstate. Brought our dog in with us. Service was quick and food was great. Wife had the collards greens and sauerkraut. Our son had two hot dogs with sauerkraut and were amazing. I tried the rib sandwich which was really good. It's edible. Not much seasoning...if you like burnt ends this is your place. Loaded potato mainly was burnt crisp Boston butt. The ribs were big, but fatty and crispy outer coating. I've never met a Lima bean that was nowhere green and cooked that way. It had a small quick, garlic, onion, but odd other seasoning. The baked beans tasted like they were from a can. Then here comes the fun part of a surprise $3 fee because the band started to play before our bill arrived. Thankfully the server understood our confusion on that fee and took it off. Restrooms, go ahead and cross your legs and wait til your next location. Beer selection was sad. No local beers. On a road trip south we found this amazing hole-in-the-wall BBQ. It had good (affordable) food, a hopping band, and a friendly dog. They warned us they were super short staffed, but honestly the service was still pretty good. I've had way worse. We stayed about an hour longer than we had planned before resuming our road trip, but i think it was worth it. Would love to come again some time. read more

Very friendly, prompt service. Ordered centered ribs with coleslaw and collard greens. The garlic bread tasted delicious. I liked the original BBQ sauce for the ribs, which were very tender and juicy. Even though when coming to this place looks like an abandoned shanty, the outdoor patio to eat is shabby chic comfortable and has a pleasant scenic decor, especially the "Georgia holy water" fountain to wash your hands after eating. Thrilled to stumble upon this place! My husband and I have been traveling a few months and have decided this may be our favorite spot to date! We tend towards the local/quirky/delicious and this knocked all three out of the park.. 1. You will probably be the only one from out of town, and will be welcomed with open arms and a 'sit wherever' -- when this happens SIT OUTSIDE!!!! (See 2.) You get peanuts to start and if you're lucky like we were, an awesome waitress named Kelsey will bring you a piece or two of chicken to let you know what they are all about with the meat smoking. 2. I found the outside seating down right enchanting. It's cozy and airy at the same time. Picnic tables are nestled next to artwork. Christmas lights and lit utility buckets are tented by a parachute hanging above. I'm a little (whole lot) obsessed with the whole place. 3. Finally the FOOD! I got a beer steamed hot dog with cole slaw and chili. Un-freaking-believable. I can't remember the last time a hot dog was more than enough food. I eat a lot of hot dogs. I'm pretty critical of them in a restaurant. This did not disappoint. I never really found the bun, I'm assuming it was under there, I ate it with a fork and knife. Truly everything you could want in a hot dog. Just a note on the chili: it was delicious--just not what I was expecting. It's a lot of red and yellow peppers, very chunky, very good. My husband got a grilled cheese and tomato on Texas toast. Pretty tasty, I think it was velveeta cheese, but I can't knock it, darn good! All in all you just can't not go. This is not a chain, this is not indoors, this is not a 'cute" place to eat. This is THE place for bbq. It's funky, lots of covered outdoor seating, fans and a full bar. The ribs were absolutely perfect, with a lovely smoke ring and an incredible crust on them. They made me want to swoon and I did roll my eyes back into my head. No need for sauce they held their own. The collards were very good, with a nice texture to them, not slimy or mushy. We are visiting the general area for a few months and this is by far the best I've tried so far. Don't bother going to a chain on the highway, take the road less traveled and enjoy some real food. PS we came on a rainy Saturday about 11:45 AM and it got busy fast. read more
