They mill grains for you, they have pellet and whole hops of every variety and for beginners they have great inexpensive packages to get you started. Wow! This place has it all! Excellent supply of ingredients and equipment! Since I'm planning to give away beer for Christmas, I searched yelp.com and seen that this Homebrew Supply place had the most reviews. However, the lower one star and two star reviews stated poor Customer Service. I didn't find that to be the case! But, I have been brewing since 1993 and most newbies would have several questions. I suppose that does rack on one's nerves. So, if you're new to home brewing, DO YOUR HOMEWORK! There's several websites that can help you. Stein Fillers also have several books on the subject. BUY ONE AND DON'T ASK DUMB QUESTIONS! I give it four stars. Would have been five, however, they have odd hours and are closed Monday and Tuesday. And, they're not open until 11:00 AM. This place has been around for awhile and has always stocked a decent variety of supplies (even at the old location) but I hardly see the owner anymore which is a shame. He was friendly, totally mellow, and knew that you would have a question eventually and just waited for it. The staff that has taken his place... not so good. You will know the minute you walk in because there is NEVER a greeting, and not once in the last 3 years have they asked if I needed help. I shop there because it is convenient. I like this place. No complaints for me about service. I've gone weekdays and weekends, Saturday does get busy. As most specialty stores go, you either do prior research or you ask. These guys are experts, not salesmen. They all craft brew, they all compete, they've all built more than 1 brewing system at home brewed all sorts of style. I'm sure most rational people know the difference, the car you buy isnt sold to you by the mechanic who assembled it. The food you're served isnt sold/served to you by the guy who stood infront of the stove cooking it. Even Emeril didnt cook the food you're served. If you're looking to get into brewing at home, visit Stein, ask about their story in brewing and how they started, what they recommend for a new brewer. Worked for me. I don't even know how to begin. The bf and I went here because we were tired of O'Shea's lack of good customer service and scant selections. I was reading the other yelp reviews of this place and saw that other previous customers of Oshea's choose to make the drive to Long Beach because Stein Fillers was just that much better. After coming here and experiencing firsthand what this brew store has to offer, I know that I will be coming back here soon and tell other brewers to come here from now on. Everyone at the store was very helpful. They asked if we needed any help. Also the selections there are amazing! They actually have more than a mini fridge of yeast as compared to other breathing stores I frequent. AND they have gallons of honey! Perfect for any fellow mazer! Oh, and FYI the beer kits were DIRT CHEAP! Like $25-$40! Other places sell those kits for $45-$50 and if you're buying online that doesn't even include shipping. Another thing that made this place stand out was that they really do seem to care about customer satisfaction. We told them that we came from mission viejo and that we were a bit concerned about whether the yeast would still be good without immediate refrigeration. The guy was very nice and told us there were a couple of ice packs in the fridge by the door that we could just grab on our way out. Just that one simple gesture made such a difference. I've been a customer for several years and my take is simple. Know what you need, place an order, get it to the register with a smile and you get great service and respect from all the staff. I think in the home brew hobby you need to do some homework on your own and maybe join a brew club to get the much needed experience you need before going shopping and asking a busy clerk 20 questions. It's a homebrew shop. I don't know exactly what category to put it in so I had to just pick something. Regardless, this is a nice clean shop. They might not have the complete section of grain to choose from but they are pretty well stocked. The employees can be helpful if you know who to ask but the others are sure enthusiastic. I had my choice of homebrew shops in the area and decided to take my friends here because they let you taste homebrew. I thought it would fire my friends up. Unfortunately, the owner of the shop was a bit reluctant to make homebrew a great experience. Luckily, he left and the employees took over where the owner lagged. He's lucky to have them. They got my crew all fired up and sold 3 kits and now have dedicated followers. I'd give this place a 5 if they had the super duper grain selection. This homebrew shop kicks ass. read more

Yeah, this place is the bomb. Their hours are kind of weird so check the website before going. I have gone their several times, only to find they are closed. They have the best selection and best prices of the places near my old house. The staff is super knowledgeable and can help you get started if its your first time. Their brewing kits make it easy to start as they include everything you need and cost as little as 60 dollars, including the materials to make your first batch. I think they are cheap because they are a non profit. They also have crazy stuff for when you want to go big time. read more

I usually have a mostly good experience when I visit Stein Fillers. It's true that sometimes the workers are a bit surly, but they know their stuff and are willing to answer questions and give advice. Most of what I need is in stock and often I would come away with more than I was seeking. I guess their prices are fair, but with so few homebrew supply stores to compare to it's hard to really have a good opinion on that. They hold brewing demonstrations, taught by one of their homebrewing experts, and even if you think you know everything, you're bound to learn something new. These guys are amazing. They know their stuff and their prices are actually better than the big boys. I shopped bulk grains and extracts to see if I could save $ on my most frequently brewed beers and before shipping, the big boys were $5 to $10 per batch more, plus shipping! They have everything you need to get going for beginers or those more advanced plus they have a knowledgeable and friendly staff. This place is great! Finding it for the first time can be a little tricky if you're not familiar with the area, as it is off of a small side street that is hard to find. Once I was there I was surprised to see how clean everything looked, some home brew shops can be pretty dusty (not a good sign for fresh ingredients). They have a great selection of hops, and yeast. Their extract and grain selection is pretty average. They also have a great selection of supplies from kettles, carboys, hydrometers, corny keg setups, etc. I can't really think of anything they don't have that I would need for brewing. The customer service has been great as well, last time I was in there I spoke with a guy named Carson and he was extremely helpful even for a novice homebrewer like myself. They also offer free brewing classes about every 3 weeks. All in all this is my one stop homebrew shop. Good prices, good selection and good customer service. read more

Steinfillers is great! The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. There are a lot of dumb questions you ask when you're just starting to homebrew, but they answer them all. They have a free basic brewing class once a month that I've heard is very informative (a friend of mine attended). All of the necessary supplies are stocked, and they also have a lot of product that is not displayed. Just ask and they probably have it. They also have a large selection of brewing kits that range from wheat beer to stouts. Also, if you bring them a recipe, they will help you buy all the necessary ingredients for it. There aren't a whole lot of local homebrew shops in the OC area, so a lot of people buy from online retailers. I would strongly recommend visiting Steinfillers and supporting a local business before you buy online. Their prices are the same if not better, and their service is great. read more

What would I do without Stein Fillers? The shop is now part of my regular shopping trip. Since I live very close, I can go there in 10 minutes and get everything to brew my beer the same day. The people are very helpful and knowledgeable. We discuss my recipes and they help me to improve my skills. Here is how it started: I came from Germany and was used to drink Pils or Weizen. Not even Belgian beer was on my radar. I tried to find good beers like my German favorites here but they all taste very different and disappointing. So I extended my search radius and started to like the Belgian beer. I went to Trader Joe's one day and purchased Duvel and Chimay. When I came to the cashier he looked at me than at the bill and than at me again and said: "You should brew your own beer, it's much cheaper and there is place close and they even teach you how to do it. They have also all the ingredients and accessories you need. Go to Stein Fillers." That was around 16 months ago. Today I brewed my 32. batch and every single bottle was a success! I have been here twice. I just started home brewing and went in to look around and ask a few questions. The employee mocked the fact that I was using a 1 gallon kit. He told me I was silly for using one because he was assuming I was using a Mr. Beer kit, which it was not. When I corrected him and explained that I was using real grains he didn't apologize. He just told me that 1 gallon is harder. If you have the audacity to insult a customer you should at least apologize for your rudeness rather than try to justify it. As read in other reviews there is never a greeting and they always seemed annoyed to be asked a question. I hate to break it to you but your store services an industry where people are gonna have questions, hence the "amateur" home brewing... I'm just saying. The most enjoyable part of each visit is when I leave the store, because I no long feel like I am being looked at like complete idiot. Examples of questions asked: What is better to use for home brewing, a strainer or a brew bag? "It just depends" "On?" "stuff" Dear Stein Fillers, The beer industry has been a social industry for as long as it has been around. I have talked with many successful microbrewers (Strand, Smog City, Absolution, Dudes...) and the common thread is the friendliness of each one. Many of them told stories of literally going from bar to bar trying to get their name out there. Each of these companies are now being carried in chain stores; however, they still go out of their way to treat every customer like gold. That is the way of the beer world and that is why I wanted to get into it. Edited as a courtesy to "Smith B.", my review caused much vaginal discomfort. I've visited every homebrew shop in Southern California and this is among the worst. The store is messy, it's very poorly organized and dirty. The grain is poorly stored, everything sits in bags and very little of it is in bins or sealed containers. I've noticed bugs in the grain, but I've never noticed bugs at any other store. Their hop selection is quite good, but that's the best part of the store. Check the expiration dates on the yeast, many vials are either out of date or close to it. When I buy yeast from other stores, I usually have several months left before expiration. The prices are reasonable, but I'd rather pay a little more to buy fresh ingredients. The staff tends to be rude and unhelpful, despite my several visits. I've witnessed the owner and staff openly arguing with frustrated customers. They are even worse to women. I've discussed this place with others in our brew club and our experiences are the same. There are several other options in the area, I'd go elsewhere first as the products here aren't too fresh and the customer service level is extremely poor. They need to remodel their store and hire new staff. read more
