Fantastic Friday fish fry. And prepare to wait unless you arrive at 430pm. Seriously. Is it worth the wait? I'd say yes but you may have a different answer, especially as it is crowded on a Friday and there is not a lot of room to wait. There are plenty of nearby options for fish fry, but don't expect a shorter wait and Dan's or anywhere else in the area. The fish is delicious. On other days the other food here is also above average. Also a full bar, so that helps kill some time as you wait for a table. If you know you face a wait, this will work for you. Hole in the wall place in Vermillion, just a little out of the way from the population but this place is still just crowded with locals and lots of laughs. It's loud because people are having good conversations, the servers are super busy, and it was just a little nuts when we went. My family enjoyed the fish plates on Friday and the all you can eat. The fish dinner is really big enough for this 300 lb guy, not sure if the all you can eat for an additional $3 was worth it...just a lot of food everywhere. We saw that the Stein Haus was recommended by KARE 11 for Friday fish fry. We had never been to Vermillion, it was a nice drive from Rosemount. We arrived around 4:30 and it was busy and getting busier. We had to wait a few minutes for a table to open up. It's a small little diner where it seems the locals frequent. Seems like they would have a good burger but we were there for the all you can eat fish fry! The beer selection is OK. The hubs ordered the Grain Belt Premium and I a bock, which was our so I settled for a Leinie's. It complimented my fish nicely. Our meal came with buttered toast, baked bean and coleslaw with a choice of potato and of course the fish. Before we were finished with the fish we had they brought out another basket, well I guess we were eating more! It was busy so the server wasn't super attentive but when they came by they were very friendly. I'd like to go back to try their other menu items to see if it's comparable to House of Coates. read more

Four of us ate here for a Friday fish fry during Lent. We arrived just before 4:30 and found it very busy - something I took as a good sign. We waited in line for about 20-30 minutes. I counted 4 servers plus a bartender, and they were all very busy. It was nice and noisy, what with all the apparently happy diners talking together. Once seated, we had to wait another 10 minutes to place a drink order but, given how busy it was, the wait wasn't unreasonable. All four of us ordered the fish, with the only variance amongst us being our potato choice. One friend had fries, which she felt were not hot enough. Her husband had the hash browns, which he enjoyed and said were done to his liking. My wife had the baked potato, and she liked it. I had the tots, and they were good. The meals also came with garlic toast, coleslaw and baked potatoes, however the one nit I have about them is that they are served in one smallish bowl which is meant to pass around the table, meaning each of us was able to have only about a large tablespoon-sized portion of the slaw or beans. They did bring another serving of each upon request, and we all liked the beans and slaw, somewhat surprising to me because I don't really care for coleslaw at 95% of the places it's offered. Here, it was very good. The first round of fish was a little warmer than lukewarm, but it was very good and had the perfect amount of delicious batter. The second round of fish was nice and hot. Went here because I was craving fish and there was a newspaper spread ranting and raving about the AYCE fish fry here. DEFINITELY a small town bar, do not go in with high expectations. This place was a mad house being a Friday during Lent. We waited about 30 mins tightly crammed in the door way before we were seated. Once they cleared a booth for us, the waitress simply asked if we were doing fish. We both replied yes and never even saw a menu. Drinks were brought out pretty quickly, however it was another 30 mins before we saw our food. The previous reviewer was correct about the sides. The beans had the distinct taste of Bush's canned beans, however the coleslaw was perfection. The fish was also pretty good. I've had better, but this wasn't too bad for a small town bar. The waitress also brought us another round of fish even though we didn't ask for it. This might have been wasteful if we had gotten full from the first round. We asked for the bill and was ready with card in hand, but were told they did not accept credit cards! WHAT?! Good thing there was an ATM inside! So bring cash! We probably won't come here again, but it was nice to try something small and local for a change. read more

Hi: This is a great local spot- for locals. If you look like you're not from around here, you'll basically get ignored. Tried this restaurant on a Thursday night. Burger was decent. The name is deceiving because there is no German Food except for a Brat. Chalk this up as a local watering hole. Or a setting from the movie deliverance. Please bring back the lightly battered jumbo shrimp. It is typically worth the drive for the spectacularly huge shatteringly crisp shrimp. What I was served tonight was not good. The shrimp was still huge but with such thick breading that when I peeled it off, the inside was like glue. The menu says battered--this was not. The server comped part of the meal, but I'm really hoping it was just the fact that it was New Years, a new cook and maybe no one had prepared the batter. Would love to hear this was just an error and I can continue to keep Steinhaus in my list of favorites places. read more

First time here. Definitely not the last. This place has been on my AYCE Fish Fry list for several years. Finally made it. I called ahead to make sure they are still serving it. The lady that answered the phone was super happy to tell me about the details of the Fish Fry. It made me feel good in wanting to drive there. Our GPS got us there with no issues. Driving through Vermillion, I believe they have one main paved road through the town, with all the side streets being gravel. This is a blink and you'll miss it type place. While a lot of cars parked, there was enough open spots to find one easily. Alyssa R & I walked in and the host stand was immediate. We waited 30 seconds for somebody to tell us to sit wherever we wanted. We choose a booth and our server greeted us within a minute. She asked us about drinks, and we noticed 5 or 6 on tap. Alyssa R went with a Blue Moon on tap, I did the High Life in a can. She also asked us if we were doing the Fish Fry. We said yes. She gave us a choice of potato. That was French Fries, Hash browns, or Baked. Alyssa R went with hash browns. I did French Fries. Our server said she would put in our order right away. We never got to see a menu for the place, so I can't offer any insight as to what that consists of. Being that the place is called the Steinhaus, I searched for some kind of German theme. Nothing of that sort, however, there are a row of beer steins on a couple of the walls. The place isn't done up fancy. It's a small town place and has a small town feel. A nice bar area right next to the seating area. Nothing blocking the two off from each other. The fact it's small town doesn't make it loud and rowdy. We never noticed any noise coming from the bar. Our server brought our drinks a couple of minutes after ordering, and we proceed to take in the place. There were squeeze bottles of tartar sauce on every table. Also, bottles of Malt Vinegar. That's being prepared. Our suppers took about 10 minutes to arrive. The plate set in front of me consisted of 4 2"x 2" pieces of lightly golden fried Cod and crinkle cut french fries. Alyssa R had the same, but with a mound of hash browns. We were brought a soup cup full of baked beans, a soup cup full of coleslaw, and a basket with 4 pieces of garlic toast. A little "family style" with the sides. We had to ask for lemon. When the lemon came, it was the little drink wedge size. Squeezing some tartar on my first piece, and biting in, I wondered immediately, why the hell did it take us so long to come here? OMG. Great fish. The perfect beer batter. Light, crunchy, flavorful. The Cod was done right. White, flaky, steamy. The tartar was house made. Perfect tang to it. The baked beans had to be Bush's Baked Beans. I LOVE Bush's beans, and these had nothing other than that Bush's rich flavor to it. They doctored them up a bit with onion chunks. The coleslaw was creamy & crunchy. They made that slaw right. The garlic toast was little round slices lightly brushed & toasted. It was alright. Nothing special. The fries & hash browns were the same thing. Alright. Nothing special. When our server came by to see how things were and to see about more fish, we went with 4 more pieces. Those came out within a couple of minutes. Just as perfect as the first batch. It's the Beer Battered North Atlantic Cod I've been searching for. Dreaming about. Now I'm drooling over. I took 3 of the 4 pieces which made Alyssa R ask for 1 more piece. When that was brought. I asked our server, not that we wanted anymore, if the sides were AYCE too. She said everything is but the potato. Solid. Our bill was brought, which totaled just over 32 bucks after tax. $11.95 for the All-You-Can-Eat Friday Night Fish Fry. There is nothing wrong with that price point. You get almost everything as AYCE. It's Cod. It's Beer Battered. It's damn near the best. This is one we urge Fish Fry'ers to make the trek to try. I can see this place having lines out the door come Lent time. Rightfully so. read more

After revisiting several times over the past few months, and going hair in the fish twice, we will not return. They know that the customers come first, however, we experienced a complete lack of care as a customer, waitresses are too caught up on getting them seated and fed, then make room for more. I'm not one to stiff the wait staff, but I finally had to put my foot down! We still visit regularly. The year round Friday Fish Fry continues to satisfy, but the Thursday Ribs and Tuesday Tacos are better. There seems to be more servers than in the past. They are courteous and professional. We grab carry out quite often and they never skimp and have not made and mistakes (rare for carry out). We love it! read more

I have been to the Stein Haus a dozen times in the past year. I usually don't go for the AYCE fish but have sampled some of my wife's which I didn't find any different from any other Cod fish fry (although the loaded hash browns were guilty good) . I have chatted with the staff there and it seems they please with portions rather than "top chef" palate dancing. The German name comes from the areas settlers and has been the same through a half dozen ownership changes, not from the menu. I have had the burger of the month the last few stops and I was happy. The won ton burger was prob my fave so far with a crispy wonton shell and stuffed cream cheese in the burger (asian chili sauce on top). If you enter there with high expectations prepare for a mediocre result, but I have entered there knowing I was coming into a small town bar and left with a big smile many times. read more

We went here because we knew they had a Sunday Buffet only to find out the buffet has been stopped because of new ownership. We live in Vermillion and have been to the Stein Haus many times and have enjoyed the food. My dad was given gift certificates from the Stein Haus, one dated Sept '14 and one for Dec '14 for a total of $65. We wanted to use the gift certificates tonight and they were not honored because of the new ownership. The new owner was in the bar area and was asked directly when he said no. We could not believe when no compensation was offered at all so if you have any gift certificates left over from the Stein Haus, consider them empty pieces of paper because they are not worth anything at the Stein Haus. read more

My husband and I have been stopping here for the Sunday night buffet for many years. We had the same server every time and about 6 months ago, we stopped coming in because of her. Her attitude and lack of attention towards the customers turned us off of the place. We decided to try it again recently and were upset to find the buffet is no longer available, but also that she is still the waitress. She must be the owner's daughter or something as I would assume no one other family would hire someone like that. My husband ordered tacos (which were surprisingly delicious, you should promote those more) and he had hot sauce. He needed a refill for well over 10 minutes until I eventually got up to bring his glass to her, who was doing nothing but chit chatting with someone who I assume was her boyfriend sitting at the bar as he was much more important than the tables she was 'waiting' on. No apology from her. I had one of the new salads, also very good. We never saw her again until she threw our bill down. We definitely got the feeling she was trying to push out the door as quickly as she could. Do you close early on Sundays? Very local feel. Great food.But something needs to be done about some of the service. Hiring family is great, but not at the expense of losing business. read more
