We took a group of 8 here on a Tuesday. We got there around 5:15pm and there were several tables and booths available but it didn't take long to fill up. Tue was the burger special night so I went with that as my entree. It was delicious. Toasted bun. Crispy edges. Fries were nice and crispy and salty as well. So good. We shared some mozzarella sticks which were also very good. Several at our table had the broasted chicken and said that it was delicious as well. I've passed the House of Coates many times between Rochester and St Paul without stopping in. My schedule opened up for lunch and I decided to pull the trigger. Glad I did. I had the Swanee burger with fries and a side of blue cheese dressing. The burger was of great quality and cooked medium well which I like. Served on a pillowy bun. Service was prompt and courteous. Very disappointed in our recent Friday fish fry. Typically their batter is fresh and light. Tonight it was very crunchy and reminded me of fried chicken texture. My thoughts were either the deep fat fryer needed changing or they reheated my fish. One piece reminded me of accidentally reheated fish in a microwave. Great service, the broasted chicken perfectly crispy on the outside and super juicy on the inside. I know this place is known for their burgers, will need to come back and see! Ambience is what you'd expect from a long standing country establishment. Its very roomy- you'd never think that from the outside. Crowds flock here, so come 4-5p you will be waiting however the staff is AMAZING In getting everyone in and out in a timely fashion. You are never rushed which I am always grateful for. Stopped in for some cheese curds. We have driven by this place numerous times on our way to Mayo Clinic. Seems to always have lots of cars, in the parking lot no matter what time of day it is. We'll we finally stopped in to check the place out. I'm so glad we did. Had a bloody Mary and cheese curds. Both were very good. Interesting twist on the bloody, in addition to the normal veggies they throw in a beef stick. Next time we stop, we'll try to time it for lunch or dinner. We tried House of Coates after driving by for years. Service is friendly and quick. I ordered the Swanee Burger with mushrooms medium rare and it was so dry and over-cooked I didn't eat much of it. The fries were good. My husband ordered a basic cheeseburger medium rare and his actually had a little pink. We probably won't be back. They have a parking lot. read more

From the second I walked in I regretted it. Funky smell from behind the bar. But that's the least of it. The "bartender" (Kim by the receipt) is terrible. Very rude. Lots of attitude. She told the couple next to me at bar "when you close your menus I'll know you're ready to order". Who says that? I asked what IPAs she had and she replied "oh I don't know" then started reading the tap handles that were right in front of me. I said I CAN read but was interested in the bottled beer hidden from view in the coolers behind her". She comes across as no matter how busy the place is, she is WAY overworked and put upon. The best cheeseburger outside of the twin cities. Their regular cheeseburger is just delicious in its simplicity. Grilled onions and a side mayo and it's good to go. I crave this burger all the time. Really enjoyed House of Coates. It is not in the best location, however the food and service makes up for that. It is about a 40 minute drive from us, but we were happy to make the trip. Was it taken here on a work lunch by coworkers. Has been told these were the best burgers, in Minnesota. Disappointing, for one, I could tell that the burger has been cooked relatively close to a fish dish, because the burger and the sautéed onions, both reek of fish. This kind of ruined the experience it would be something to be said if it wasn't such an offputting smell. I have been frequenting this place more in the past two weeks as my new job is having me travel in the area. House of Coates is known for their burgers. These are hand pattied and not your typical sysco food service frozen variety that so many places pass off. My favorite here is the Swanee which is a bacon cheeseburger 1/2 #. This week I tried the Canadian Jack which was Canadian Bacon and. Montaray Jack cheese. Kinda underwhelming and not as juicy as Swanee. What deducts this to 4 stars is fries and sweet potato fries are soggy. They also charge 25 cents for each takeout container. They also have 1/3# burgers. I do wish they would make a Juicy Lucy burger or add some fancier sauces including peanut butter. I downed a Fulton Lonely Blonde waiting for food, and bartender was attentive and nice. read more

We stopped here for a mid-afternoon lunch on our way from Minneapolis to Rochester and found it to be a solid little joint. The outside looks a bit sketch but the inside is cute and homey. I had the "World Famous" Swanee Burger and my husband had the Zander Fish Filet sandwich, and we shared some cheese curds and onion rings. The fish was a nice sized filet, not obnoxiously huge, and cooked well and had good flavor. The burger has bacon, cheese, and grilled onions and was clearly hand made and well cooked, the onions gave it really great flavor. We aren't from the Midwest so we have no idea if the curds are good but we liked them... the onion rings weren't *great* but totally solid. We did not have any cocktails but they do have what seems to be a full bar - but pretty basic liquors, it isn't a top shelf place necessarily. Altogether a friendly, nice little stop with good food. If we make this trip again we will very likely stop. read more

Stumbled across this place on New Years Eve and couldn't be happier. Will be back MANY times in the future. This is so cozy, welcoming, and DELICIOUS. You owe it to yourself to check it out. I'm embarrassed to say that - being from Apple Valley - this hidden gem was within plain sight and easy driving distance. I had heard the rumors from friends that it was a great place for good food and cheap drinks, so I imagined a dive ... one that would satisfy but wasn't worth the extra ten minute drive out of town. How I was wrong. This place is special. I don't Yelp very often, but when I do, you know I mean it. I loved this place and will be back again soon. It's hard to recommend any specific fishes but everyone was very pleased with the chicken sandwich (broasted) and the burgers. Also a really nice little salad bar and a super awesome bartender/server. We also encountered amazing patrons (at the bar) who are regulars and talked about how they also drive a short distance to enjoy the hospitality of this special, family-owned establishment. Went for lunch on a weekday. Ordered the broasted chicken special. The piece of chicken breast was very small. It must of been old or over done as you couldn't cut it with a knife. My fork wasn't able to pierce it. Like a chunk of rubber. Didn't eat it obviously. The onion rings were very good. My boyfriends burger was excellent. The last few times I have been In there I have not been happy. The food quality seems to have gone down. They don't seem to care if you have a problem. My friend asked for a belt with the bacon on the side. They brought her two prices of white bread with a tomato on it. One small piece of bacon . Things like that keep happening I give up. read more
