James is amazing! My car broke down on a Friday and I was calling around to every mechanic shop in the area. I am from the Bay Area and we were about 2.5 miles from home when my car started making weird noises and then just died. I was able to start the car up again and get it to our house in Pioneer and get a call out to AAA for a tow. After waiting for our tow truck, I was able to get ahold of Steins Auto Care and I spoke with James who told me to bring my Tucson in so they could see what the issue was. I had the vehicle towed and due to this being a Friday, after 3pm, James advised they could look at my vehicle on Monday. I was fine with that, however, I had no car to get me home. James suggested the Enterprise Rental Agency in Sutter Creek and I was able to acquire a vehicle for a few days. Stein personally drove my Hubby and I to Enterprise and I was able to lock down a car so I could get home for my work shift. James contacted me as soon as they were able to do a diagnostic on my car and had to break the bad news to me. He let me know that the engine had failed and that I would need to have an entire engine replacement. James suggested I have the vehicle towed to Hyundai to see if this would be replaced under the Hyundai Warranty. Thanks to James and Stein, this was a smooth process and I was able to get the vehicle towed to Stockton Hyundai for a full engine replacement. Luck was certainly on my side when I dialed Stein's number for help and I appreciate all of the hard work and assistance provided by this fantastic Auto Shop. Breaking down on the highway while heading home from the mountains to San Francisco is about as stressful as it gets--especially with a nervous pitbull and no real idea where you are. After calling five different shops that either didn't answer or couldn't help, Stein's Auto Shop picked up. Even though they were short-staffed, already busy, and facing a holiday the next day, they said they could take a look. They also strongly suggested a nearby towing service rather than limping the truck in. That advice turned out to be spot-on--the transfer case was completely bound up. Priority Towing showed up, loaded all four of us (truck, humans, and dog), took the 4Runner to Stein's, waited while we dropped it off, and then drove us to a nearby dog-friendly hotel. That alone would've been above and beyond. The next day, the truck was fixed, test-driven, and running like normal. To top it off, the owner personally picked me up from the hotel. The whole team was kind, calm, and genuinely engaged--walking through what most likely caused the issue and answering questions without any rush or condescension. All for a very reasonable price. Owning a small business means this truck matters. A 2001 Limited 4WD 4Runner with plans to see another 200,000 miles deserves good hands, and Stein's proved they're exactly that. I've taken my cars to Steins before this occasion a couple times and had good experiences until this last time and after this last time I will never take my vehicles back to them again. I scheduled with I believe his name is James at the front desk for me to bring my car and truck in my car needed suspension work done to it and my truck needed a tune up. I stated I need suspension work done to my car and gave them what I was told was the problem from another mechanic who unfortunately was booked up so he could not do the work to it in time. I brought it in, told them do your own diagnostic and inspections to it, and do a compression test as well and ensure everything is nice because it is my daily family car. They told me they'll call me the next day with what the car needs, they did not call me. I had to call them and they told me they hadn't looked at it yet and give them 20 minutes they will throw it on the lift and take a look. When I got word back they stated it needed a AC pulley, which was not asked to check I brought it in for compression and SUSPENSION and Suspension was top priority. I told them that's fine put one on and asked them what was wrong with the suspension because my car is squeaking like crazy when I turn and when I hit the smallest bump it's making a loud squeak with every up and down motion made. They said everything is perfect with the suspension, nothing needs to be done to it. I told them have your mechanic do another check because it should not sound as it does, he then states he'll have his mechanic do it again whatever needs to be done he will do as I stated I'm not worried about how much money it needs put into suspension just do what needs to be done so it's safe for my child to ride in. The car had been sitting in the garage for almost a week at that point when I got my call to come get my car from Steins I noticed it had only had the compression test and pulley done for over $600 but no suspension work. I drove away then took it to Les Schwab to get an alignment pressed down on the hood of the car heard the squeak and said we will not do an alignment on this car until that is fixed and then told me exactly what the previous mechanic said was wrong with it as well. I instantly took it back to Steins and said Les Schwab stated what was wrong with it was the same as I took it in to have replaced in the first place as well. They said they are giving you the Schwab Job and argued stating his mechanic has been doing this for 25 years and knows what he's talking about. I then talked to Stein himself he told the mechanic to throw the car on the lift, they told me nothing is wrong with the car it is just an annoyance but it shouldn't have left the shop with the noise it is making. He then tightens up 1 bolt and drowns the bolt in WD40 and send the car off saying there it's fixed. Of course the WD40 only band-aided the noise for 1 day then then the noise was back... PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE If you care about your car, your safety, and quality work LISTEN TO THIS REVIEW AND DO YOURSELF A FAVOR, DO NOT EVER GO TO THIS SHOP!! I shouldn't have waited this long to ever write this review but I'm here to hopefully save someone the money, the headache, and possibly their life... If I could give less then a 1 star I would give a negative. read more

Steins saved my butt this last week!! I was driving from Sacramento to Pinecrest when I hit Sutter Creek and my car was overheating. Turns out my mechanic at home hadn't tightened the radiator cap when I picked up that morning therefore spewing coolant all over my engine and leading to the overheating. The radiator was empty and not circulating. Coasted into this shop and the gentleman at the front desk helped me get my situation sorted out. Added hot water, waited for it to fill and had it run until it held temperature. Trip saved - can't thank them enough. They were slammed and them taking the time to help me out in my moment of dire need on a 100+ day was above and beyond!! Thank you!! Great prices! Great customer service! I got help from James and Skippy. I went in with car trouble and had my car back the next day, they had me drive it around all weekend and come back Monday to double check everything. Immediately my car was running better! If you want to support a local auto shop business this is the one you need to come to!! I gave them the part to replace,I come back an hour and a half later and they still don't have it installed and apparently because I didn't answer the phone to comfirm which part they where replacing so I had to pay for there time just standing there looking dumb. Then they replace the part and it took 20 additional minutes. He was also very rude and made me feel soooo uncomfortable. read more

Terrible shop. A couple years ago I came in to get my rear shoes replaced on my 96 Dodge 2500 and they over-tightened my adjusters. My brakes were almost on fire when I got home. It has never been the same. I gave them every chance to fix their mistakes but they just kept replacing parts that did not need replacement. I eventually had my entire brake system and front ball joints, and shocks replaced and they still didn't fix the problem. Tried to tell me it was normal for one rear tire to lock up before the rest. It had never done that before. They turned the drums, then replaced the drums, then turned them again when I brought it in a few months later with major brake issues. One side of the shoes was totally worn down while the other was barley used. New wheel cylinders, new calipers I brought them from Napa. They blamed the next problem on the calipers I brought them and so they replaced the calipers with their own. They had the same problem so they replaced them again. Still same problems. And they put a tear in one of the caliper dust boots that I had to ask them to put silicon on at least. Then the master cylinder, all new hoses, then the proportioning valve. I had all of my ball joints replaced and one lower nearly fell out within a few weeks. They only replaced the one that fell out and now I have problems again. They won't even look at it for me and said they can't get me in until later next month! Never go here. They have too much business without good competition so they don't give a hoot if they mess your vehicle up and they will replace part that are perfectly good. read more
