I work a few hundred yards away from GCAC and have considered taking my 1998 Jeep Cherokee to them for repairs. In every case I have a pretty good idea of what the problem is and they always leave me guessing what the cost will be for the repair. I called on them again just this week in connection with a possible job and they wouldn't even quote the cost of parts that would be involved. They wouldn't even give me a ballpark figure. And, knowing that depending on how you source a part the cost can differ by a factor of ten or more. But, they stubbornly refused to do anything more than quote me their hourly rate. Well I have a pretty good idea of time required to replace the part in question and can easily source the part from Amazon which is just over $40 and I simply refuse to put up with this kind of nonsense. I work in customer service and I've learned that the way you generate business and keep customers coming back is to build trust and this company doesn't have a clue. read more

But when I mentioned I'd like to get my 80 Series Land Cruiser worked on, he said he would not be inclined to work on such an older vehicle but perhaps Don might, since whenever you work on older vehicles, if something else breaks, this becomes an issue. Um, wow. First of all, I killed my engine while traveling up in Amador County, far far from home (San Diego). So that's where all this starts. Enter Don. I called him ASAP when he was recommended by another car place in Amador. HE IS GREAT. All caps worth it. First of all, he was really sympathetic to my car engine being dead (didn't even give me a hard time for neglecting it :) ). Second of all, he did a bunch of research and called around to figure out some options for me, offering me three price levels for three different solutions (I like options). Third of all, he worked quickly, was really friendly, was super thorough with my car, and stayed in contact even though I had to go back to San Diego sans car. Knowing my car was in Don's hands, though, soothed my worries. When my car was complete and I was able to drive it back down to San Diego, I called Don to let him know that the car was great and that all was well in the world of my car. You know what he did? He gave me a hug over the phone. If that ain't great service, I don't know what is :) In addition to Don, shout out to all the guys at Gold Country, too. That said, if it must happen, you cannot do much better than Don Wilke and Gold Country Auto Clinic (GCAC)... Honest, fair and capable... Most recently, I had a breakdown requiring a tow to GCAC... Don should have been on holiday, but one of his staff had been hospitalized and Don was on duty... While I waited for my car to be evaluated, he turned down a potentially profitable job by telling the customer that the work the customer thought he needed was still 10,000 to 12,000 miles out... Ours is an old car about to be turned in... Don and his crew had it up and running promptly at a fair price... When the new one arrives, our regular maintenance will go to GCAC without hesitation... We had to leave Sutter Creek on a Monday morning and our Toyota Camry failed to run properly on Saturday morning. There were no repair shops open anywhere all weekend but we sent an email to Gold Country Auto Clinic, the place where we've been taking the Subaru to for 8 years. Don Wilke answered that same day, telling us to bring it in first thing Monday morning. Don and Tim and the crew have always done a fantastic job in helping us maintain the Subaru so I knew we'd be in good hands. The problem was a failed ignition module. As it turned out, Gold Country Auto Clinic had our Toyota diagnosed and fixed as fast as was possible, on short notice, and we made it to our San Jose appointment on Monday as planned. If I could give this a negative score I would. I cannot believe how they tried to scam a woman trying to take care of her car so she can take her kid to school and activities. I went to Gold Country Auto in Jackson. They told me I needed new brakes, rotor, axel, no oil in my car and more. Ryan, who did the "26 point check" didn't even open my cabin air filter that was full of leaves. He charged me $166 to "look at it". I got a second opinion with pictures. My brakes are amazing (they should be I got them 3 years ago) and my axel is fine. Both air filters full of leaves and debris. Gold Country Auto tried to scam me hard for things that didn't need fixed. When speaking with the owner Don to rectify the incident he told me they wouldn't lie, that he backs up Ryan 100% and did not see a problem. I do not trust Gold Country Auto and they will take advantage of any woman that goes there. I have paper proof but when spoken to was told they did nothing wrong. read more

I have been living in the Jackson CA area for a bit over a year now and am really fortunate to have discovered this shop. Don Wilke and his staff are really friendly, professional, and competent. I'm a bit of a car buff and really fussy (compulsive) about my cars. My Honda S2000 has needed some routine maintenance but recently developed noise in the differential. Don and his team diagnosed the problem as ring and pinion wear. inspection revealed only minor wear. Honda does not sell repair parts, only a brand new full differential assembly ($$$). Used market ... unavailable. Don changed out the differential oil and did the test drive personally. He recommended that I continue to drive the car as it is. He could have easily recommended the full replacement ($$$). Bottom line: they won't try to sell you parts/service that you don't need. Huge. DrDave PS. We took our vehicle to this establishment a few months ago for some engine noise. They said it was a rod knocking. They supposedly did a diagnosis on the car. I am really starting to believe that there is nothing but racist people in that area. Or the mechanics in this area have no clue what they are talking about. The whole time it was the fan!!!! Had a real mechanic from Sacramento check the car out and had it fixed within 30 minutes. He even showed us how to fix it. It just goes to show the difference in mechanics. The guy who fixed this has been a mechanic since he was less then 10 years old. While these guys at Gold Country won't help unless you meet their standards. They don't even do tires but they put air in my tires and gave a reference for a tire place. As a woman it's tough going to body shops because I have no idea what's going on with my car. Tim is awesome, he explained what's going on with my car each time and made me feel really at ease about my visit. These folks are Way Beyond Good...they are Fantastic! Back in September I was making a trip from Washoe Valley, NV to Salinas, CA...for my late Uncle's Celebration of Life...I was enjoying the brand new pavement on Highway 88...when I came up on a stoppage for the final stages of repaving...I was in a long line of stopped cars...smelled burning oil...and thought Man, someone needs to fix their car!!...right then I saw smoke curling up the side of the Corvette...Oh it's MY CAR! I stopped to look along the side of the road...but could not see where it was coming from...I drove slowly the 5 miles or so into Jackson...where I looked for an auto parts store...thinking maybe it was a loose oil filter...that's when I saw Gold Country Auto Clinic...I talked with Tim W. the service manager...he referred me to the owner to see if they could fit me in...the owner was pleasantly surprised when he saw the Corvette...as he also is a Corvette owner...Let's bring it in and check it out! Turned out it was a leaking oil pressure sending unit...which the parts store delivered in about 2 minutes...during the short amount of time it took to replace it...the service manager had called the only car rental place in Jackson to reserve a car for me...just in case the project could not be completed...as he knew the purpose of my journey. I was stuck Christmas Eve when my Expedition broke down in Jackson, CA. Everything was closed until Tuesday. But Tuesday morning at 7:30 they answered my call and I got the car to them by 8:30, and it was repaired by noon. They were courteous, knowledgeable, have all the diagnostic equipment to do a thorough job. They checked out the whole vehicle and gave me a rundown on the condition of the fluids, brakes, etc. I will be returning to them for all my vehicle needs. read more

OK, full disclosure: This is my second review of Gold Country Auto but in all honesty they deserve 50 more! The way they conduct business is the way ALL businesses should be run. Here is the situation I was just in that prompted me to write this. On Wednesday I was driving my truck up the small hill on Hwy 49 in front of Safeway when I lost ALL acceleration. Seriously, uphill with gas pedal floored at 21 miles an hour. Yikes! Was able to get it to Gold Coast a little later, Explained to Tim what had happened. GCA confirmed the issue and a couple of other engine codes. From the look on his face, my mind went to $$$$ to get it fixed. Can't believe how wrong I was. Between Tim and Don they we're able to write up the issues AND research the true problem was. They found a service bulletin that described the problem and the fix. Tim said it was covered under warranty that had a time and mileage limit. I was good on miles (yay) but over on time (crap). Tim suggest I contact Toyota store where I bought truck might be able to help. I did but they couldn't but did give me phone number for Toyota HQ. Truck was towed to Placerville for fixing. Cutting to the chase, the write-up, description and package put together by Tim/Don that included the pulling of services codes and the Tech Service Bulletin that Thompson Toyota forwarded to Toyota HQ convinced them that they should cover these repairs, wait for it, under warranty!!! I am firmly convinced that without work done by these great gentlemen swayed Toyota's decision in my favor. Without Tim, Don and Gold Country firm belief in Outstanding Customer Service and going extra mile for customers, I would have had to pay out of pocket some where in the mid-four figures to get the repairs done. Great service, VERY knowledgeable staff, HONEST, and understanding of their clients needs. Oh yeah and this place is CLEAN, no dust or grease in their lobby, they even have a kids area with coloring books. For the last year and a half I've been incredibly frustrated dealing with an off and on cylinder misfire. Every time I would take my car in to different mechanics no one would find the problem, they would change unnecessary parts, charge me, and send me on my way. Until I decided to try Gold Country Auto Clinic. They actually took the time to take my engine apart and find out exactly what was causing my problem. I ended up needing a new engine and they were able to find me a used low mileage engine right away. When I was battling my warranty company for my car, they were patient and helpful and kept me up to date through the whole process. They also always tried to keep costs down for me by not replacing unnecessary parts, really looking out for my best interest. This place is GREAT! We drove into Jackson from Reno in our RV towing my Tacoma. We had the Tacoma modified with a drive line disconnect and auxiliary brakes to allow towing four down. Arriving in Jackson we found the check engine light on in the Tacoma. Also the brakes on the truck smelled like they were dragging. We were concerned as this was our first trip in our new coach with these modifications. Arriving at Gold Country we met Tim the service manager. He was eager to help us. He read and informed us of the error code. It was a speed sensor in the transmission. Not a good code this far from home. Then we met Curtis. One of the mechanics. After they talked about our issue, Curtis hooked up a computer to the truck and did a more thorough diagnostic. After discussing with us for about 1/2 hour, the modifications that were made, and how I disconnected the drive line he cleared all the codes and told us to drive the truck for a while to see if a code would reappear. He said everything should be alright. He was right. It was just operator error. He saved us from looking at a major bill to charging us nothing! They made our out of town stressful experience into a very nice day. read more

Today, I called Don (the owner) telling him there was a small fluid leak down the front tire. I arrived at Gold Country with a quote from a local "fast lube and oil" business of $650 to replace the alternator on my 2006 Mazda pickup. Gold Country checked my charging system, ordered, had delivered and replaced the alternator in a short period of time. I was out the door in about an hour and 15 minutes with a total cost of $338! That's a pretty substantial difference in cost, but as important is the confidence I have in the knowledge and skill of Gold County's mechanics. I've been to Gold Country (when they were located in Martell as Subaru Plus) on 2 other occasions for repairs, and my experience was the same.
