Tia left. The practice began to feel like a factory. Yes, Dr. Mandava is very nice, but at a minimum I would expect him to read my records before asking me why I came in. I had X-rays taken by a cheerful young woman who told me her only academic qualifications were a high school diploma. I was also seen by a young man who told me he was a licensed dentist from a Caribbean country but had no US credentials. I love young people. I adore immigrants. I had to have a broken tooth extracted in March of 2023 which my general dentist could not handle,…read moreso the dentist referred me to an oral surgeon (Empire Oral Surgery). The appointment required well over a month, and I asked if the healthcare staff wore masks while performing the procedure and got an equivocal assurance that they did. When I arrived for the procedure I found that all the staff at the practice were not wearing masks of any kind, and when I asked if the attending surgeon would be wearing a mask I was told that he would not (you can read my May 18th review of Empire Oral Surgery if you want the details). I know that there is no longer any law requiring that healthcare workers wear masks and that politicians have declared that the COVID pandemic is over, but the pandemic is *not* over and the law often is wrong. I had to beat a retreat and then search for a surgeon who would observe basic biosafety protocols. I called my general dentist and asked for any other oral surgeons he might recommend and came away with a list of four. To their credit the first two offices were honest and said that they would not wear masks (one "No" and a second "Hell no") but the third, Dr. Gelder's office, said that they'd "take it under advisement" and get back to me. They called me back an hour later and said they'd wear masks for the procedure. I offered to furnish the N95 masks (sealed and factory stamped) but they said they had them on hand. The only problem was that they'd have to schedule the appointment two months out. I accepted and babied the broken tooth for the next couple of months. Once the appointment came I have to say the experience was completely different than Empire Oral Surgery. I was greeted by a nurse wearing an N95 mask, taken to a well-ventilated surgery suite, and was worked on by Dr. Gelder who also made a point of wearing an N95 mask while entering, administering anesthesia, performing the procedure, and suturing up/telling me how to handle aftercare. This was not a simple extraction: it involved a tooth that had vertically sheared and broken below the gum line, and it required a studied hand to handle it (believe me, in the five months I had to wait for this procedure I had plenty of time to read about it on the internet). Dr. Gelder and his nurse were extremely good at their work. If you want a very very good surgeon -- Dr. Gelder (and his nurse) are the people to go to. If you want someone who will respect your concerns about COVID -- Dr. Gelder (and his nurse) are the people to go to.

She put me on a shorter cleaning schedule so I could catch up from the neglect through Covid days. Didn't hurt a bit! After about a year and a half playing catch up, the work has begun. I'm well on my way to my teeth being fully restored! Also, after weighing all of my options about that darn tooth, I finally got rid of it and can smile again without being embarrassed. They provided me with choices and gave me time to make the right decision for myself. No pressure! I'm glad I chose here. I can see the difference in care from other places I have been. They work as a team. Dr. Seaback is amazing. Very skilled! She also worked with my insurance after a denial and they caved! She's amazing. This place has washed away my dental anxiety and I'm well on my way to a beautiful healthy smile again. I'm so grateful to them!

My dental hygienist is very sweet and puts me at ease while she does her work. Also, their waiting room was remodeled in recent years and now it's even more modern and inviting. Finally, I've never experienced any insurance issues, which makes things easy. I love this office and recommend it to anyone looking for a dentist in the Capital Region, and more specifically, the Guilderland area.
