I moved to the DC area several years ago, and chose Dr Mabry as my dentist because he had such "wonderful" reviews. I dont think he is so "wonderful" any more. He checked my mouth after a routine hygiene teeth cleaning, and said I have a cavity under my bridge. He was quick with his diagnosis and seemed annoyed that I was asking questions about where exactly the cavity was. He recommended that I buy as much dental insurance as possible because it would take a lot of work to replace the bridge with an implant and two crowns. I was a little suspicious, so i went to another dentist. The new dentist probed and examined the entire bridge and could not find a cavity. He said to keep up with my dental care, keep an eye our for any changes, and get routines exams. THREE YEAR LATER the crown is still OK. Dr. Mabry tried to enrich himself by creating a dental issue that did not exist, and it did not matter to him that my mouth would be mutilated in the process. He tries his best to keep good bedside manners, but his impatience and annoyance shows when you ask "too many" questions. He has an arrogant frat boy energy about him. The young lady that is the hygienist is excellent. The receptionist that checks you out is always grumpy, and lastly be weary of their billing practices. read more

From regular checkups to some more significant work that needed to be done, Mabry and his staff have excelled at every aspect of my experience. The front desk is friendly. This was a great dentist until I realized their unethical billing practices. Had a procedure for a crown that was covered by my insurance according to multiple conversations with the staff to confirm. And of course directly after the procedure they say "oh we just found out it is not covered" and I will have to pay out of pocket. It was very convenient timing for them. I was misinformed intentionally and they were not willing to work with me to resolve the issue. Not to mention the crown needs to be redone. On to the next dentist. read more

I've been visiting Dr Mabry for a little more than a year now and I have been more than satisfied with this practice. The facility is clean and simple which is what I prefer when I visit the dentist. I've been to practices that put more effort into decor than customers which is really annoying. That is not a problem here. All of the hygienists are friendly and knowledgeable. The front office staff is very pleasant and easy to work with. They even helped me finagle a payment structure that worked best with my insurance plan so I didn't have to pay so much out of pocket. Dr Mabry is super awesome. He's good at what he does, he cares, and he's always been very professional. He even has some good jokes which I can appreciate when talking teeth. I have been going to Dr. Mabry since I moved to the area 5 years ago. He and his staff have always been friendly and helpful. When I have had to have a crown or other dental work, I am always thankful he knows how to kindly wield the numbing needle. All of the dental hygienists are friendly and take the time to ensure that your teeth are super clean. I hardly want to eat after I have a cleaning done. I joined Yelp just to write this review. New to the area, I chose Dr. Mabry because of his glowing Yelp reviews. I, too, was impressed by the thorough examination (measuring my gums and other items highlighted by other reviews) during my first visit to him October, but left VERY concerned about the amount of work that he recommended (namely: upwards of 6 cavity fills and re-fills and other preventative work that would prevent future repairs of over "$19,000"). I regularly visit the dentist - and this was the first time someone has made such drastic suggestions. Had I re-read the reviews I may have noticed how many note they were surprised with Dr. Mabry's suggestions. I solicited a 2nd opinion from another dentist and he suggested that NONE of of my teeth needed fillings - though we should keep an eye on one. I suppose this is a difference in dental care philosophy (aggressive vs. passive)... but future patients should be aware (...and maybe concerned for their pocketbooks) that Dr. Mabry aggressively suggests repair. My advice? Get a 2nd opinion and find the dentist with the philosophy that makes you comfortable. I won't be returning to Chicken Little. read more

I've gone here for about a year now. The exams are extremely thorough. I've never had a dentist measure the amount of space under each tooth before. It took forever. The dental hygienist (I think her name is Ann) is very sweet. I've had 2 fillings and Dr. Mabry did a good job, and I didn't feel a darn thing. I do need a mouth guard, but they charge A LOT for them, and my insurance doesn't cover it. So I continue to use my POS over the counter brand. I had a little bump on the inside of my lip where I had bitten down, and Dr. Mabry said that would never go away on its own and that it could get bigger, and I should go see an oral surgeon. It did go away, though. So he was not correct about that one - glad I didn't take his advice. That's the only blip I've run into. read more

After moving from Chicago, I needed a new dentist. Dr. Mabry was close to my apartment and was covered by my insurance so I figured I'd give it a shot. I couldn't be happier! I was told, after my first cleaning, that I would need a cavity dealt with (my first). I was a bit anxious to be honest but Doc Mabry took excellent care of me. He walked me through the process and calmed me down before he got the drill out. But, even then, he was gentle. Amazing dentist. Definitely would recommend! read more

Thanks to yelpers for helping me find this practice. Who it all comes down to is the hygienist. She (Audrey) was so awesome. Gentle, friendly, knows what she's doing. So appreciated. Dr. Mabry was cool. He suggested I see an oral surgeon, showed me a scary xray of a disintegrating tooth of mine. If he's right, good. Even if he's on the cautious side and it's not as bad as it seems, I'd rather a dentist err on that side. So I'm sad about that, but will be getting it checked. read more

I just wen to Dr. Mabry's office for the first time yesterday because I really disliked the dentist I've been going to for the past couple years and Dr. Mabry seemed to have good reviews on yelp. Well...I wasn't disappointed. Let me start by saying, I'm not usually one to make small talk at appointments, less yet the dentist where it's really hard to answer with hands in your mouth. That said, the staff is all so very friendly and outgoing, I found myself joining in with their convos. Also Dr. Mabry is a huge sports fan - any team, he'll probably have something to say about them. The exams are very in depth (hence the gum measuring mentioned in another review) but despite the length, Anne the hygentist did not leave my mouth throbbing or sore, unlike other dentists I've been to. They did find a couple cavities which gives me another reason to question my previous dentist - haven't had one in 12+ years and now I have 3 in the last 6 months??? Could be a coincidence, but not like I stopped brushing my teeth! I also really like how you can set up an online profile with their office and log in/view your appointments etc. Oh, and the appointment started on time and took just over an hour - I'd imagine it would probably be quicker on subsequent visits. read more

Dr. Mabry and his staff are great! I've been going to him for the last 3 years and he always makes me feel comfortable. They work with me and my insurance before I have any work done so that I know exactly what the cost will be. He's very honest and will not pressure you to get unnecessary work done. I just went to Dr. Mabry's office for the first time and had an excellent experience! Due to lack of insurance it had been over a year since my last visit. I was nervous (and embarrassed) and as soon as my new insurance kicked in I started looking for a dentist. I called Dr Mabry's office and Beth was friendly, helpful and thanks to a cancellation was able to get me in the next day! When I arrived the office was nicely furnished, clean and up to date (I hate going to a professional appointment and feeling like the office hasn't been touched since the mid 80's). Beth knew who I was when I walked in on time and was again very nice. Anne, the hygienist, came out to meet me and was friendly and upbeat. She went to work with the X-rays, gum measuring, teeth cleaning and polishing and still had me out in an hour! She was incredibly nice and did a great job - I had no discomfort at all. Dr. Mabry came in to do the exam at the end and he spent the time going over my X-rays, examining my teeth all the while being personable and professional. I got a little ribbing for not flossing enough (guilty) but he was not condescending at all. He even told me he'd look at my X-rays a second time just to be sure there was nothing of concern and that they'd call if they found anything. Overall, a great experience! read more

So relieved. It's been about 2 years since I've had a good dentist visit. That streak ended today at Dr. Mabry's office. After reading some reviews and checking with my insurance, I made an appointment sometime back in March for today, at the end of April (kind of long, but now I get it). The appointment started promptly and my hygienist Anne was super friendly. She proceeded to take a ton of x-rays, measure my gums and clean my teeth. Then Dr. Mabry came in for the final once-over and treatment plan, I made some follow-up appointments and I was out the door. The whole process gave me the feeling that Dr. Mabry and his staff are knowledgeable, friendly and efficient. The whole appointment was about an hour and a half, but considering everything they did, it was quick. Really glad I found them. read more

My husband and I have been going to Dr Mabry for two years now... time to write a review. I have A LOT of dental work experience, so I feel a little like this should count as an expert opinion. Here are my observations: 1.) This place is run like a business. If you waste their time and miss an appointment, they are going to charge you. If it's been a year, and your insurance company is going to pay for x-rays, then they are going to take them. 2.) Dr. Mabry is honest and professional. He is not going to find cavities that don't exist, and he's not going to pressure you into work you don't need. I have a crown right in the front of my mouth that is not quite right. I'd like to get it fixed and have a perfect set of shiners, but it would be expensive. Dr. Mabry and I talk a little about it each time I go in, but he's never done anything to pressure me into getting it fixed. In fact, now I kind of wish he would, so I'd stop procrastinating! 3.) Dr. Mabry is not going to wait until your teeth are rotting to fix them. My husband and I have both had small cavities filled. In all these cases there was a tiny bit of decay. We could have waited to fix them, but we thought, 'why wait to get rot out of our teeth?' 4.) Audrey, my hygienist, cleans the heck out of my teeth. They are usually a little sensitive the next day. I am glad to have the plaque gone. 5.) Beth, at the front desk, is very matter of fact. I'm not going to expect a hug out of her. 6.) You should floss. I don't floss enough. Audrey tells me I should, and I appreciate that. Some people need a personal trainer to make them work out. I need Audrey to make me floss. The only reason I am not giving five stars is because I don't love Dr Mabry like I loved my childhood dentist. When I get there, or if my son loves him, I'll change my review. read more

Bottom line: I think Dr. Mabry aggressively seeks out "cavities", fills them, and profits. I have always been religious about going to the dentist for cleanings every 6 months and have never had a cavity. A few years back, I switched from my longtime dentist to Dr. Mabry for convenience's sake, and at my first visit he informed me I had a cavity and went ahead and drilled and filled it that same day. No big deal. I then heard grumblings from family and friends that they felt gouged for unnecessary procedures at their visits with Dr. Mabry. Despite the longer drive, I decided to switch back to my longtime family dentist for this reason. Since returning four years ago, I have not had a single cavity found. However, I recently noticed my floss kept ripping around a certain tooth and decided to check it out. My dentist informed me that the one filling I had (done by Dr. Mabry) had come loose and was essentially hanging out/trapped between 2 molars. The jagged edge of the filling was shredding the floss. My dental hygienist also noted that the filling was considerably darker in color than my teeth, which is not common practice. From what I understand, fillings are supposed to last at least 15 years, and it has only been 5 years since my visit with Dr. Mabry. I am frankly a little TO'd that now I have to pay to have the filling removed and the area where Dr. Mabry drilled refilled, especially when I question whether I even had a cavity to begin with! I guess the difference between Dr. Mabry and other dentists I have visited is that he is extremely aggressive with his suggestions, which reads: extremely expensive. The course of care is up to the patient, but I personally prefer a more conservative dentist. I would make this 1 star review, but I decided to give an extra star because Dr. Mabry's dental hygienist was friendly and very gentle. read more

I've been going to this practice for 20 years (it was initially owned by Dr. Carl Floyd who retired). Staff are great and they are always on time. Dr. Mabry is great. Always had a good experience! I've been going to this practice forever, since Dr. Floyd. It did take me a little while to warm up to Dr. Mabry because he's so different from Dr. Floyd--Dr. Floyd was OLD and kind of old school in the way he interacted with people, Dr. Mabry is much younger and a little less formal, but still polite and respectful. What I love: 1. The most I have ever had to wait is less than 5 minutes for my appointment to start. They respect your time by beginning appointments on time. 2. I like Beth at the front desk. She is not warm and fuzzy, but she is competent, professional, and they always get my insurance paperwork and appointment times right. 3. They clean my teeth for about 45 minutes, and I learn something new about brushing and flossing every time. I have heard about other dentists who do a 15 minute cleaning, and I just don't think they can get your teeth clean & educate you in that amount of time. The hygenists are GREAT! I really like them all. 4. Dr. Mabry is proactive about my teeth, letting me know if there's one that looks like it's developing a cavity that I need to brush more carefully. 5. They got me into the Sonicare toothbrush, which I love. No cavities since then! I could go on, but those are the highlights. I really like this practice and I recommend them over and over again. read more

I called for an evaluation/exam as a followup to a comprehensive dental exam I had last month (by a very qualified dentist out of State.) I explained to the receptionist that I could email the full set of X-rays, photos, and report done last month so that I would not have to have more X-rays done unless necessary since I did not want to expose myself to any unnecessary cost or radiation. Nevertheless, the receptionist insisted that the doctor requires new patients to have X-rays done prior to the exam. I questioned why not just look at my X-rays first to see if any new X-rays would be needed....the receptions insisted again that new X-rays would have to be taken if I wanted an appointment and told me that it didn't look like I would be a good fit for the office. Thats for sure.....! There are more and more articles about whether automatic X-rays for lots of exams are always needed, and concerns about harmful effects of radiation,..........And lots of articles encouraging people to question procedures and charges and to try to get the health profession to provide more information so that we can be more informed consumers. Hope we get more answers..... PS rating does not reflect quality of any dental procedure since I never saw the dentist. read more

Terrible. DO NOT GO HERE. My first review on Yelp ever. I've been going to the dentist for 20+ years regularly and have never had a problem. I go here and rather than do the general teeth cleaning like I asked, they performed a $600 procedure not covered by my insurance. I ended up with a $200+ copay and got yelled at over the phone by the receptionist. They want me to go back in a month for another "cleaning." ASSHOLES. They won't tell you you're not covered or that you're not getting the procedure for which you've asked. read more

Good first experience with Dr Mabry and Anna, the hygienist. Anna did a nice careful job and explained what was going on, and Dr Mabry was very good about showing me the X-rays and explaining what he saw. They do panoramic X-ray (in addition to bite-wing) which seems to provide more information. Nice web-based appointment system with email reminders which I appreciate. The waiting area is a bit small but they move people through so it doesn't really matter. Handy location, and expert treatment, definitely worth it. read more

I've been going to Dr. Mabry for about three years and have had nothing but positive experiences. Check ups are always very thorough but efficient - appointments are one hour, almost to the minute, and little time is spent in the waiting room, if any. Managing appointments online is convenient and Beth at the front desk is very helpful if you need to reschedule. Anne the dental hygienist does a fantastic job cleaning your teeth without hurting you, and is very friendly and sweet. Dr. Mabry is detail-oriented and just a really great guy. I love getting my travel toothpaste, floss and a new toothbrush after each visit, too! They also sell Sonicare toothbrushes at a discounted price, if you're interested. read more

I used to go to the dentist who had been there for years & years, but retired and actually chose the dentist who he would sell his business too. I loved that dentist, but decided to give the new dentist a try and am I glad I did! Even though I don't live in Arlington any longer, I still go to Dr. Mabry. I've been going to Dr. Mabry for 1 year exactly (2 visits) and I must say I've very happy with him and his staff. His office is clean, light, bright and very up-to-date. Their machines seem state of the art (I'm not an expert) and you see the X-Rays immediately on a computer screen next to the exam chair. Just by looking at my X-Rays, Dr. Mabry knew immediately that there was too much space between my 2 molars and listed off all of the related problems I may be having because of it, and he was spot on with all of them! I have been seeing the hygienist, Lina, and love her. She finally taught me the correct way to floss after 25 years and is very gentle. Dr. Mabry is a very good dentist and I will continue to go there unless my insurance changes! read more

My first-ever Yelp review because these guys are great. I have been going to this practice for around 10 years, since it was owned by Dr. Floyd. He was great, but I think the quality of care has improved even more with Dr. Mabry. They have state-of-the-art x-ray technology which is super quick and easy. It had been nearly 2 years since my last appointment, they were running around 5 mins late (the longest I have ever had to wait; they run ON TIME). I was still out in less than an hour total, even with the gum-measurements that have been mentioned in previous posts. The only drawback is getting an appointment with this popular practice - that goes to show how good they are. I've had dentists in the past who try to "upsell" me on things like tooth whitening or other optional cosmetic care. I'm sure you can get those things done at this office but they have never tried to push anything on me, which is so refreshing. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Mabry's for almost five years now, and honestly my reason for leaving has less to do with the service he provides than with the missed appointment policy and sullen treatment I received from the woman at the front desk. Earlier today, I was unable to make an appointment, one that I had confirmed two days ago. No elaborate excuses. Tried to cancel earlier in the morning, but called before the office was open apparently. My fault, I know. Upon calling in to apologize, I was told I had to pay a $50 fee. While I agreed to pay the fee, I was upset about it for a few reasons: 1) if I knew there was a $50 fee, I probably wouldn't have missed; 2) i've never missed an appointment - ever, in five years; 3) even if you do miss an appointment, doesn't it make sense to at least give a patient a one-time, get out of jail free card before hitting them with fees? These last point seems especially relevant for long-time patients with a consistent record of never missing. So, to sum it up: I'm just disappointed they don't consider the value of long-time patients (who presumably will continue to be patients) over the advantage of getting fifty bucks out of 'em. As a patient who previously lived near Dr. Mabry's office, but continued to go back after I moved away, that $50 fee just made an easy decision to call it quits with his office. read more

With all of the other great reviews I thought I would give this place a shot. I went a few times and I thought it was okay, nothing special. The first lady I had cleaning my teeth felt like she was literally scrapping my tooth with a sledgehammer and it hurt for two days. The second lady was alright. It was across the street from where I was living, so I couldn't beet the convenience so I went back. All 3 times I've been there they try to nickle and dime me with all of these $50 extra charges. Today was the final straw. I had to leave work early, was 30 minutes late and I was charged $50 for a missed appointment. They were rude and wouldn't even try to help. I thought Dr. Mabry was a little cocky the entire time, but I felt like they only wanted my missed appointment money and were being lazy. There was NO ONE in the waiting area. The wouldn't even give me a free toothbrush for the $50 "missed appointment" fee---which I was late. Hello, this is DC--people get stuck in traffic all the time. I would give this place -45 stars if possible. Find a more courteous and reasonable service. The lady even had the nerve to ask if I wanted to reschedule an appointment---but I would have to pay a $50 fee. No thanks. I'll take my teeth somewhere else. read more

My DC based dentist of 25 years just retired, so I surveyed my friends and came up with a list recommended dentists in the Arlington, VA area. Dr. Mabry was recommended by two friends in my poll, so I chose him. Good choice for a variety of reasons.
