As an out of network provider, I did not end up being able to afford Dr. Mulaney, but I sure wanted to have her do the work. My first sit down was at the recommendation of both a colleague and people on Next Door who raved about her. This was July 2024. When I entered her building, I was a bit wowed by how upscale the finishes and furnishing were. The exam room had a leather patient lounger that was borderline decadent. The staff were all welcoming and very friendly. Personally, I was in a state - I had lost my mom only weeks before the appointment and was having tooth odor - pointed out to me by one of my best friends at the funeral - from the state of a pair of back upper teeth. No pain, but clearly work I had put off far too long needed to be done ASAP. I found Dr. Mulaney warm and understanding, of both my personal loss and having ignored the dental fire simmering in my mouth due to fears and terrible dentist experiences throughout my life as a patient. She connected with me as a fellow Steeler fan, and seemed to deeply care about me as a patient. She examined my teeth before ordering the $399 imaging that was apparently "free" or just $99 and believed at least one if not both teeth would require root canal therapy and recommended someone (who was also out of network). We proceeded with the diagnostic and never in my life have I been so well examined on any part of my body. This was a 3-D imaging machine that showed roots, teeth, fillings, gums, and it was even thermo generating images to show pockets of potential infection. I was beyond impressed by this - especially considering I was to only be charged the one flat fee for the exam and diagnostics. But in the end, the estimate for crowns, which I would require AFTER the root canal she recommended, was too expensive for my teacher salary being Out-Of-Network. Two upper back tooth porcelain crowns were estimated at $7100. And I believe that was my 40% after insurance paid the 60%. But if not, 40% of 7100 would have been $2840 out of pocket. So that was a hard no. But I honestly think they had already done the math and the 7k was my portion. It is now 2026, a full 2 years following my appointment with Dr. Mulaney. Before writing this, I contacted the office so to forward results of that appointment and the comprehensive diagnostics they completed with me to my new Endodonist. This is b/c insurance says images are good for 3 yrs....and I have a consult tomorrow morning to finally determine whether root canal therapy is required in this very troubled #15 tooth. *Based soley on the appointment with my dentist May 21, when he shot cold air onto my tooth and I did not feel it, he believes the root is dead and will need removed to prevent infection in the root pocket for the future. However - this same dentist adhered a poorly fitting crown which was TOO HIGH despite 3 attempts to reduce, he allowed me to suffer with jaw and neck and frankly, tooth mechanical misalignment/pain for 1 year before it finally cracked eating nuts. YAY. Even then he still tried getting me to just let him repair the cracked area allowing it to remain, despite all the drama it had caused. Would Mulaney have adhered a too tall crown, not on your life. This we know is the difference between the $400 copay and $4200 crowns from my current dentist and expert care I could not afford through this highly skilled practitioner. read more

AVOID this dentist at all costs. High costs. Dr. Mullaney's office has non-transparent billing practices & is smooth-talking, trying to make even simple procedures (like a teeth cleaning) sound complicated, to justify charging $996 for a teeth cleaning! After her initial "free" consult, she required me to return twice (3 visits over two months) to see a dental hygienist. They claim that "chair time" is one of the reasons for their obscenely-expensive rates: Dr. Mullaney also charges $21 for a bottle of mouthwash, $61 for a fluoride rinse, $324 to deep clean/scale one tooth, $270 for a dab of antibiotic below the gumline, & $170 for the gritty polish they slather on the tooth surfaces. Ah, but you do get an autographed, free copy of the book she wrote, & the promise of a reward for referrals. Before you know it: You've been had. My New Patient visit with Dr. Kathleen Mullaney & Staff started weeks ago. Annette responded to my e-mail request for an appointment right after the Veterans dental event in October 2019. I was set up for an appointment shortly after and had to reschedule a few times before yesterday. In every rescheduling, Annette e-mail and called to ensure I had the dates and times I needed for service. Thursday, November 6, 2019 @ 3 pm was the day and it started a day earlier with a welcoming phone call for Dr. Kathleen Mullaney to her office. I was e-mailed parking instructions, patient information forms and HIPPA forms. I was issued an assigned parking space and entered the building located in Old Town Alexandria, Va on the 700 Block of North Fairfax St., Suite 230. Once I opened the door to the office I was greeted by Annette and Paige. Both we so excited to see me and I felt as if I knew them all my life. Which you would find it amazing that Paige and I went to the same high school together. She remembered me and made me feel like we never missed a day of high school. Let me just share that I was All In at this point. You know they say, You will always remember how someone makes you feel! Paige was amazing in high school and is an amazing asset to this office. Annette welcomed me with a tour of the office and I met Dr. Mullaney in the walkway who immediately treated me as if I was family. Annette walked me into the patient private consultation room were there was a welcome gift from the office (WOW). Again, I'm ALL IN! Annette introduced me to Raelle, who would be my hygienist for the day. OMG! She sat with me and was talking to me like I was family. For those afraid to visit a dentist, this is a place that makes you so comfortable you would forget were you are. she went over the patient information forms with me and really went through it with an eagle eye. The X-rays are now 4D and all kinds of lasers being used on treatment now. Looking at my image was like looking a Avitar all over again. Raelle was detailed and talked to you through everything explaining options and what if anything was a concern during her observation. Annette wasn't far away at all and seemed to be at the ready to assist Raelle during the service. I joked about how it reminded me of the Adam Sadler movie were the guy would come from no where and appear lol. Dr. Mullaney then came to formerly met me and talked about me before anything to do with dentistry. That was totally different for me and she really cared about my teeth. Raelle reviewed her findings and shared everything she learned about me during her review. Dr. Mullaney reviewed her work and did her follow up check giving me great news regarding my teeth and the future of my teeth. Now it was time for a cleaning and this part was actually fun knowing if they treat me like they have to this point. My teeth would become clean, sealed and prepared to the world to see. This office seriously has something special going on! Their work is Phenomenal and I'm here to tell you they are the Best like Michael Jordan in basketball. Listen, I know insurance guides a lot of people to dentist that aren't even qualified to do the basics. I highly suggest you put that to the side and visit Dr. Kathleen Mullaney's office & team! I complete numerous reviews from around the world with YELP and give my honest opinions. This dental visit was the best visit I've had in my lifetime. Dr. Mullaney have been my dentist for 3 years now. For several years before seeing her I had skipped going to the dentist. This lead to my oral health not being in the greatest shape. Thanks to Dr. Mullaney I have learned a lot about the importance of oral health and how it relates to overall mental and physical health. Not to mention she got me back on track and the results from now and 3 years ago are night and day. I can't begin to express how amazing her and her staff are. They are reason why I actually look forward to going to the dentist. I can write a novel are just how genuine, kind, and thoughtful they are. Every time I walk in I am always welcomed by a smile and a warm friendly greeting by Paige. I often smile before walking in because I know she is the first person I see. Annette is so wonderful and helpful in so many ways. I remember one time specifically where my Dog chewed one of my dental appliances and I wasn't sure how I was going to pay to get it replaced. Annette worked with me to figure out a plan were I could afford the replacement and not put me in a tough spot. Tamara takes the stress away from any procedure. She does everything she can to make you feel comfortable and take away any anxiety you have just by being her joyful self. Raelle is absolutely amazing at what she does. Every time I go in for a cleaning she goes above and beyond. It is easy to tell that she cares a lot about what she does. And of course Dr. Mullaney is the best dentist I have ever had. Author, tv-star (well thats how I see her with her local news interviews), and philanthropist. I can't thank her enough for everything she has done for me over the years. Going back to the real reason I wanted to post this review. As the world is dealing with COVID-19 it has placed stress and anxiety on many of us. I for one have done everything I can to avoid leaving the house unless I had too. I almost even skipped my cleaning last week because I didn't want to risk it. Dr. Mullaney and her staff out did themselves (which I don't know how is possible). Once I was there and saw everything they were doing to meet the CDC guidelines (and then some) I instantly was at ease. I appreciated all the precautions they are taking during this time. I am so happy I still decided to go in for my cleaning. They did have to alter some of their traditional practices, but I still left feeling like I got an amazing feeling and that the staff cared about my well-being. If you have any reservations about your next appointment ... don't! You will be well taken care of especially during these times. read more

Dr. Mullaney's office is top-notch. Dr. Mullaney and her staff are very courteous and thorough. Everyone there goes above and beyond what I've experienced at any other dentist office. Most importantly, everyone is very knowledgeable and I always know that I can trust their recommendations. Even after other dentists in the past told me that I needed certain work done, including surgery, Dr. Mullaney gave me her honest opinion and explained why I wouldn't be a good candidate for what the other dentists told me I needed. Dr. Mullaney is such a lovely and friendly person and she clearly takes extra care in hiring others that are just the same. The only downside I can think of is that you have to be prepared to pay for your visit upfront before getting reimbursed by your insurance company. My husband went to Dr. Mullaney when one of his crowns fell out and his regular dentist was not available to re-cement it. Dr. Mullaney did a fine job. It took all of 20 minutes, start to finish. The cost: $360. I called to ask if there had been a billing error. Nope, that is their standard cost for a very simple procedure. After canvassing number of other dentists, I could not find anyone who would have charged anywhere near that much -- Beware of her pricing policies and get estimates before you have work done. read more

I made an appointment today, submitted my dental insurance information online, and requested to know how much a dental cleaning would cost. I got a call back from someone who told them they couldn't provide this information, and that I wasn't a good "fit" for the practice. She explained that Dr. Mullaney isn't limited by what an insurance carrier thinks is necessary. These people are nuts. Expect to pay too much. read more
