They really take the time to help them get comfortable with letting him brush a stuffed dragons teeth while cheering him on and answering all my questions to explaining how we'd get his cleaning down via teamwork between myself and the dentist to discussing tips on how to create positive dentist memories. I never felt rushed. I also appreciated the private room for little ones first time and an employee even came in just to hold my phone so he could see and hear his favorite songs to help him through the cleaning which honestly took just a few minutes for the whole thing and as soon as it was done they brought out a bubble blower that helped him quickly get over being upset about getting his teeth brushed. The bathroom was beautiful and clean as was the front waiting area which was colorful and had many activities for toddlers and older children and best of all giant vending machines that your child gets a special token to use after they are done- his adorable rubber duck from the machine quickly brought a smile to his face! The also take and provide you with a cute first visit dental photo printed out -it has a qr code to download the file- what more could you ask for!? The employees at the front desk also went above and beyond helping us check to see if another insurance would have better coverage and now we can add him to one of our other policies to get coverage at a much higher rate!

My son is 12 months and barely fussed during his teeth cleaning and the whole ordeal was over in under a minute. I have a clear game plan for my son's dental hygiene. And I especially want to give a kind shoutout to Lindsay, the patient care coordinator who graciously answered three of my phone calls in less than 10 minutes while I was frantically trying to coordinate my life with a young toddler. It's really rare to experience an office where all staff members are kind, helpful, and friendly, but that is this office. From the admin person to the front desk staff to the hygienists to the dentist herself, this is an office that truly cares for the kids and their families. All the staff are all positive and supportive. The office is very clean and conducive to kids, with tvs in the ceiling, toys in the waiting room, and kids decor throughout. There is a dry erase board where each kids name is written to welcome them, a very nice touch. Each kid gets a goody bag at the end and a token which can be used on the toy vending machines in the lobby. This is a HUGE hit with the kids! They usually get little jewelry trinkets or toys that they get excited about. One time the staff gave them balloons which was sweet. The dentist herself is very kind and gentle and thorough with the kids. She'll take time to answer questions and explain things. The same go for all the hygienists here. I always get a good vibe when coming to my kids dental appointment!

Just this month, she has decided to drop Metlife. This appears to be a pattern -- a pattern of dropping some of the more common insurance carriers. I do not know for how long it has been going on, but it causes chaos and unpredictability around a part of a young child's life that is already scary and confusing. This is arrogant and, and it sends a perhaps unintentional signal that her team possibly care only about the wealthiest members of the Arlington community who can afford to bear the burden of this unpredictability. It forces busy families to scramble to find a new dentist for their child -- and I fear it can cause harm to children who develop a bond of trust with one building and staff to be migrated to another. So, pray tell, how do Metlife families at your practice explain this to their 3 and 4 year olds? If you don't belong to an extremely high-earning two family household, Dr. Flanagan's practice is not for you. You cannot predict from one year to the next if you can afford for your child to be seen at this practice.

But wait theres more, the rooms are themed with lots of toys and action figures. The rooms have TVs. The dentist was also incredibly warm and realistic with the parents. Pro tip, dont park out front on the street, there is parking in the back if you wrap around the building. I understand that dentists are not perfect and that all treatments carry some degree of risk, but my experience with this office was one problem after another. The office, staff, and dentist were all very pleasant. However, two of my children were recommended treatments that other medical professionals later told us were unnecessary. One of my children underwent a root canal and crown on a back baby molar, which later became infected. When I initially asked why the tooth couldn't simply be extracted rather than the root canal & crown, I was told that it would be several years before the adult tooth erupted. After the infection developed, the dentist explained that the tooth would need to be extracted after all and that a spacer would then be placed. My son was seven years old at the time. Rather than proceed with that treatment, I sought a second opinion from his previous dentist, whom we had only left because we moved farther away. They told me the root canal and crown had been unnecessary and that the tooth should have been extracted from the beginning. My four-year-old daughter has a mild lip tie, and this dentist recommended laser surgery to correct it. After consulting her pediatrician, an ENT specialist at Children's, and a speech pathologist, I was told that the procedure was not recommended in her case and could potentially cause more harm than good. I'm glad I did not move forward with the treatment. My daughter does have a mild speech delay, but it was attributed to recurring ear infections. She has since had tubes placed in her ears. Based on my experience, I was left with the impression that this office may be recommending procedures that are not always necessary. After receiving multiple second opinions that contradicted the treatment recommendations we were given, I began to question whether financial considerations were influencing those recommendations.

Let me start by saying that I am 51 years old and have never had any dental problems (major or…read moreotherwise) before a recent out-of-nowhere root canal problem. Add to this that, apparently, I have four tooth roots instead of the normal three, and it's oft-said that you have a sometimes difficult procedure ahead. I was sent to Bloom Dental by the equally excellent Cherrydale Smiles (also in Arlington, Virginia), who did my initial X-Rays, discovery of problem, and cleaning out of gum, pre the necessary root canal work. I always heard nightmare stories about root canals. That was before the incredible Dr. Yousefi took over. I felt ZERO pain at ANY time during the initial procedure (or at any time), and even had to come back for a part two since I had an infection that needed elimination before the work could be completed. I was worried there would be pain during part two, but again, Dr. Yousefi worked some magic on my aforementioned unusual four-rooted tooth with NO pain did it in exceedingly efficient time (45 minutes tops for the entire two-part procedure), and it's now temporarily crowned and awaiting final crowning at month's end. I highly recommend Bloom Dental because of the highly-skilled, precise Dr. Yousefi and his polite, professional staff. 5/5 gold stars. --Matt C.
