I've been going to Sterling's for years so this review is long overdue! There's a lot I appreciate about Sterling's. What I love most-is location. It's less than a mile from my house so dropping off my dry cleaning is quick and easy to drop off my items while running errands. I was just in last week and was sad to see their front window/door area all taped and boarded up. Jesus, who works there mentioned that they had recently had a break in and were in the process of getting the wreckage fixed. Hard to see a small family business take financial hits like this. Despite this, Jesus was in great spirits-friendly, professional etc. He assured me that he would be able to remove a stain from my favorite suede coat & promised to have it ready before my birthday day this last weekend. Jesus delivered. My coat looked amazing, stain all gone & it was ready on time as promised. Thank you Jesus and Sterling Cleaners for your quality work. I used to come to Sterling cleaners much more frequently when I lived closer. However, I just come occasionally now, especially when I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for dry cleaning services in my new neighborhood. On my most recent visit, I dropped off a single sweater for dry cleaning, and it was ready within two days. The sweater looked amazing and the price was extremely affordable. I can't speak to some of the other reviews or complaints, because I have had nothing but good experiences at this cleaner. read more

After shopping around for a cleaning of my designer purse Sterling Cleaners said yes they would clean my purse for $60 a Burberry bucket tote bought less then a year before. When I finally took it out the plastic wrap it looked as if it was just thrown in the washer there are rips by the handles and the bottom was warped and glued back on. The fact that they didn't tell me what happened and bagged it to charge me for the services just doesn't sit with me well! Do not trust them with anything of value to you. Two thumbs down! No way, this was a terrible dry cleaner. So the SO and I are always looking to try new places in our Sacramento digs. We went here because the SO had a significant amount of dry cleaning we had to drop off before we went out of town. We drop the dry cleaning off and pick up a few days later. The SO went to put on his shirt and the word "BALD" is written in ball point pen on the bottom section of each of his nice button up shirts. The ink is smeared on the bottom and we just couldn't figure out why this would be written there. I went back to the dry cleaner huffing and puffing because all the shirts looked ruined. The owner said he thought my SO's last name was "BALD" and not "VALDEZ." More importantly, why did he write what he thought was the SO's name on the shirt? He threw it back on me saying "I write all of my customer's last names on their shirts and you could've told me if you didn't want it." Who does that? I have been getting clothes dry cleaned for years and I have never had anyone write on my clothes. I told him to get the ink of out of his shirts or he would have a bill from us. He was reluctant, but agreed. I picked up the shirts later and BALD was cleaned out of the shirts. Needless to say, we won't be back. read more

Sterling Cleaners has changed my whole attitude toward dry cleaning. I, like Katie T, try to avoid buying clothes that require dry cleaning, because it's such a hassle. However, I'm happy to report that my experiences here have been quick, easy and painless. They repaired a rip in a cheap shirt that I love, dry cleaned a cute little dress, and cleaned a funky (as in hip, not stinky) leather jacket I scored at a thrift store. Service is fast and contrary to what others have said, the prices are fair for what you get (quality work, short turn around time, and friendly service). I brought my wedding dress here to be steamed right before the big day. There was no rational reason, but as I handed the dress to him, I had the uncontrollable urge to slap his hands away, snatch it back, and run out. I was that nervous and distrustful about it. Thank goodness I was wrong. The dress was perfect, nary a crease or wrinkle to be found, and it ended up being $20 cheaper than I'd originally been quoted. The place is clean and the customer service was excellent. I avoid buying things that need to be dry cleaned because it's a hassle, but next time I need my pea coat cleaned, I'm bringing it here. read more

I've entered a serious phase of procrastination in my life. Perhaps it's because I've gotten married, gotten a puppy, bought a house, and am upending my life entirely in two months by relocating to the desert. Or, maybe I'm just lazy. Anyway, lately the laundry pile has gotten out of hand, the dry-clean-only bundle is creeping out from under the bed, and don't even get me started on the bag of stuff that needs mending. Who has time to find needle and thread, much less hem your own pants? I've tried several local dry cleaners, most recently the one beside the horrible chrome horse Safeway, and found them lacking in timeliness and expensive. I don't want to pay more to have something dry cleaned that the price it cost new. Enter Sterlings - from the ashes, the phoenix rises. What a gem! In three days they cleaned 10 pairs of pants, one winter coat, eight shirts/blouses, AND hemmed a pair of my work pants, for about $100. I don't know what the breakdown per item is, because I didn't drop the load off and the pick-up receipt didn't list per-piece pricing, unfortunately (minus one star for that). But I had so much to carry that the owner refused to let me take it all myself and, though I tried to fight him (I'm a "I can do it myself" kind of lady), he was insistent. So, together we trudged two blocks down Broadway with armloads of bagged cleaned clothing. That's pretty awesome customer service. He even hung his heavy bundle in my car for me. It being Broadway, he then literally ran back towards the store. Sweet man! Two strange things I noticed - my old dry cleaners used to use foil to cover special / fragile buttons on my sweaters. This place either did not do that, or they removed the foil before I picked up the loads. They also didn't button all of the shirt buttons all the way so we did that when we got home. Finally...there was still a little bit of make-up on the white shirt, which was strange. The wine stain that I'd been worried about was totally gone (this is why I hate white shirts - one hour into wearing the damn thing I dribbled red wine down my front at a party). However, there was a little streak of something that looked like blush in one of the front creases. Yes, I wore it anyway. And promptly dribbled more red wine onto the sleeve on the second wearing. Damn it! Something tells me that this place is going to know me on a first name basis, and soon. read more

Even though my friend knows this place is expensive, she decided to get her graduation gown PRESSED (note: the gown was not dry cleaned) here because it's close to school/home. The owner charged her $25. I got my gown pressed at another dry cleaner's. I paid less than $3. I don't care how great of a job he does. My husband has a habit of stuffing his items that need cleaning into a plastic bag that he hides in the closet until he has absolutely nothing left to wear to work. Recently, the bag surfaced on his dresser and I'm pretty sure he started pulling clothes out of it to iron and wear (despite them having been dirty and stuffed in a bag for months). While I purposefully avoid purchasing dry clean only clothing, because of my dislike of having to drop off and pick up cleaning, I figured that since I've been working part-time the least I could do as an almost-housewife was to get the husband's clothes cleaned. So, on the back of the several good Yelp reviews, and the proximity to my house, I dropped off the bag of shirts at Sterling. The man who was there (the owner, I assume) was very very friendly and told me he'd have the clothes ready the next day. Good enough. When I went back to pick up the items I'd lost my receipt (of course). No matter--they just ask who you are and give you your clothes. The total for what I believe was ten shirts was $21. Good deal, right? And they don't put those annoying semi-permanent tags in the shirts or anything like that. read more

I have been looking for a good dry cleaner since moving to Sacramento in May of 2010. All of the places I tried before Sterling Cleaners were hugely over-priced and did shoddy, sub-par work. NOT THIS PLACE!! Wow! They are terrific! The prices are extremely reasonable (14 shirts, 2 blouses, 2 skirts and a pair of pants were $39!) and they are very polite and have excellent customer service skills. They have never broken a button or pressed weird creases into the clothes and they seem to treat everyone like they're a favorite customer. So, even though this place is no longer on my way home from work, I continue to drive 15 minutes (with no traffic) out of my way to go there because the work is excellent and the service is stellar! My review for Sterling Cleaners is only for alterations, so I can't speak for their dry cleaning services. PROS: The man who helped me (the owner, I think?) was pretty friendly and even complimented my clothes, fast turnaround time (3 days for 3 pieces of clothing), good store hours and solid workmanship. Good hemming, straight seams, better fit on my body. CONS: The work is good but the price is kind of high. I paid $65 for altering a skirt, a dress and a pair of capris. That's actually more than I paid for the clothes to begin with. :/ read more

I used to work at a drycleaners, so I know the stuff that can go wrong as well as the stuff that never should go wrong. I needed to go get my bridesmaids dress drycleaned in time for my little brother's wedding and scoured sites like this as well as some others for a well reviewed dry cleaners. I found a couple of places that looked fine, but they both had some sort of minor flaw I apparently needed to be able to overlook that had been cited in their reviews. Until I stumbled across Sterling and the only thing I could find that was a negative was the price. If that's all I have to contend with to ensure that my bridesmaids dress doesn't lose a button or come out looking like it never even went in, that is fine by me. I took the dress in and was told I'd receive it in a normal time frame. If I remember correctly, the price was somewhere in the vicinity of double what it cost to clean a dress back when I worked in a drycleaners over ten years prior. Considering it was a formal dress on top of it all, that's really not bad, people. I came back at the allotted time and it was done to perfection. More recently, I took my step-daughters flower girl dress in as she wanted to use it in a play she was in. Her Father and I had just been married last September, but because we're always so busy, we hadn't taken her dress in yet for a post-wedding clean. She had done quite the number on her dress. It had a slight train of its own and there was some blacktop involved.... *sigh* I'd like to quote the owner when I came to pick it up when he said, "She's very active." Cuz that's pretty effing apt. So I brought it in and with only a touch of trepidation, the owner told me it would be $40 and he'd have to clean it probably four times. I also needed it in a rush after dropping it off on a holiday weekend. I'm sure I have no one to blame but myself, but! The dress came out like it had just come off the rack. He got EVERY stain out and he said it only took him a couple of times, but I was impressed. Absolutely worth the $40 for her to be able to get some more use out of it. She also just adores that dress (picked it out herself), so it was worth it to salvage something she loves so much. And with that... I've officially found my drycleaner. read more

Brought my new designer leather handbag to be cleaned. It was in mint condition, save for a 3 inch stain on the front (which happened the FIRST weekend I used the bag!).... so I brought it here to have the stain removed. I was told "no guarantees." Well, I get the bag back... and although the stain was gone, the leather was completely discolored, and even blackened in some areas. Dreadful. The discoloration is at least somewhat uniform looking, but overall my new handbag looks like it has been used for YEARS rather than the one weekend I had taken it out. Additionally, the inner liner of my handbag shrunk and the entire bag looked rippled/no longer had it's form. I was eventually refunded 60% of what I paid to clean the bag, but I left feeling disappointed. The shop owner explained that when he said "no guarantees" he had meant "no guarantees" regarding how my ENTIRE bag would end up looking.. not "no guarantees" regarding the stain. Clearly we had different understandings. I'm happy he refunded part of my money, but I did explain that he should be more clear with customers next time. Had I understood that my entire bag COULD be ruined, I never would have risked having it cleaned there in the first place. read more

Decent... Took a full suit and dress shirt here. The dress shirt was missing a collar button, so also paid to have them put a new one on. The suit came but perfect, the dress shirt was also cleaned very well, but the button.... They used a button which wasn't even close to the same button as the other side of the collar. PLUS, the button was sewn on at a spot that is at least an inch off from where it should be! So this makes my collar get "pulled" in one direction when trying to button it over a tie... I ended up just cutting it off and having a friend do it. Relatively fast, and cheap. I will most likely come back, and would recommend.... except for alterations.... read more

This place has an amazing seamstress. I had a rip in the shoulder of one of my favorite dresses, the fabric and thread at the rip was so distressed. I couldn't figure how she/he would fix it, but thought at least I would try. When I picked it up, I couldn't remember which shoulder was ripped. I couldn't even tell after wearing it either. Also, the owner is always pleasant and just adorable with his thick accent. I thought he was trying to tell me something about the LANE in the back - only to realize he was warning me that it was going to RAIN on Sunday. Too cute! read more

I've been searching for a high quality cleaner since I got to Sacramento 4 years ago... finally found one! To be fair, I rarely need clothes dry cleaned, so it's not like I've checked out more than a few. The thing is, when I take my nice dress shirts and suits to be dry cleaned, I prefer they come back at least as nice as they were when they went in (call me crazy!). Unfortunately, this hasn't been the case. Enter Sterling Cleaners! I was happy to see that even the negative (as in, not 5 stars) reviews all said it was top notch quality, and the only gripe was the price. I started going to Sterling a couple of months ago and I keep going back. I've dropped off about 20 items at this point. It's all very reasonably priced (i.e. A wool peacoat cleaned for $8.90) and there is quick turnaround- usually about two days in my experience. The guy who is always there, I fail to provide you guys a name (he tends to wear sweater vests and has gray facial hair) is very friendly and after a couple of times, he automatically knew what I came in for. This is the first dry cleaner that has been able to obtain my loyalty. I take my clothes seriously, and I'm glad I found a place that does the same :-) read more

I am really impressed with this place! I took a new silk pleated orange skirt that had been caked (thats right... it had birthday cake grease stains all over it!!) from two days before, and they were able to remove all the grease stains!! Its also important to note that dry cleaning pleats can be very difficult and the structure of the skirt was kept intact! They were quick. I brought it in monday and it was finished thursday... and for only $12! I will absolutely come there again! read more

Brought in 2 men's pants and a short sleeve button up T shirt, charged $17.00 and some change. Next day I brought in a regular T shirt (not a dress shirt mind you, a T shirt) and was charged $5.79 . Are you serious???? Asked about the charge and was told it was correct. Quality was excellent however, got shirt spotless and new looking however way too expensive price for just one shirt, and a regular T shirt for crying in the rain. This place is fantastic! As far as quality and speed of their work and services they offer, they really deserve 5 stars. I'm holding out only because a few things (like cleaning my heavy winter coat) have been a little pricey. But still, I consider the reliability and quality worth it. I'd give 4.5 if I could. The guy is so sweet and friendly and they usually turn stuff around the next day. It might take longer if you are having something altered or if you have a whole bunch of stuff, but then, it will still be less than a week. They have repaired a sweater for me, replaced a zipper in pants and also in a skirt and cleaned my coat as well as numerous other items. They did a superb job on all of these and most of it was quite reasonable! They are reliable and consistent and have convenient hours too! read more

Second time coming here and both times have creased my nice pants when specifically asked for them not to. This last time, my pants looked as if they'd had the iron on it too long and faded some parts of the pants. When I receieve the pants I take them out in front of the owner and, show him the crease on the side of the pants on each leg. He responds with, "you asked for no crease, that's the 'side crease'". He had obviously either forgotten my request or is just careless with his attention to detail, because when I asked for no crease, that should mean not to make any crease that was not there before. I wouldn't be so mad about a crease, but when it's my favorite pair of pants which I requested (he even wrote it down on his notes) no creases, and where each crease is, there's an obvious line where the creases were. Same day dry cleaning services are apparently rare in Sacramento which I discovered after waiting till the last minute (again!). It wasn't as easy to find as I had hoped, which is why I'm writing this review. If you bring your items in before 8:30AM, you can pick them up that same afternoon. They do charge more than some places, but generally consistent with downtown Sac (about $6/item). I will definitely go back again soon considering my last minute tendencies. Lastly, I would like to add that my clothes did not come back with the chemical smell some dry cleaners can leave (ahem, mercury), which was an added bonus! read more

Pretty good prices, friendly service, and fairly reliable. My only gripe is that occasionally they're running a little late opening up in the morning but otherwise they're pretty great. I have been a customer of Sterling Cleaners since it re-opened after its fire. I usually take 10 to 15 dress shirts for laundering and light starch twice each month. Not always but perhaps every other time, I find broken buttons on my sleeves or on the front of my shirts after they come back. Unfortunately, the discovery occurs at home when I am getting dressed. On my subsequent visit to Sterling I point out the broken or missing buttons. I am always surprised how it is insinuated that it must have been my fault, or that the buttons were already crushed, broken, or missing before I brought the shirts in. I tolerate the situation because of the convenient location to my work -- right across the street; and the otherwise good work and low price. This all changed recently when I brought home a batch of shirts that included my wife's blouse. The blouse was supposed to have been dry cleaned, however it did not smell clean. It still had the smell of body odor. I took the article back. What followed was odd and hard to believe. The first thing I was told, by who I assume is the owner, is that this was "not his fault". (How odd.) Had he just taken back the blouse and told me to pick it up some other day that would have been the end of this story. I explained that it was not a matter of "fault" but rather a matter of customer service. That's when the owner became extremely defensive, and stated that there was "no guarantee" of their work. (How odd, again.) I said, okay. I told the owner that he was going to loose my business and goodwill. He shrugged his shoulders and raised his eyebrows. This is a review of their tailoring/alteration services. I bought a dress at a thrift store absolutely loving everything about it except the too-modest neckline. I thought it would be a pretty simple alteration to extend the neckline into more of a boatneck, but thought I'd take it to a professional rather than risk messing up the dress myself. Based on Yelp reviews and proximity to my home, I tried Sterling. After much confusion over what I wanted done, they said they'd have to consult their tailor and to leave the dress with them for a few days. This would mean I wouldn't have the dress for the occasion I wanted it for, but oh well--I didn't really expect them to have it done in time, but a girl can hope. They said it would be a tricky alteration and might cost a bit, but I figured they know better than me. A few days later I returned only to be told that their tailor had deemed the task impossible. This seemed kinda crazy to me, I must admit. I'm not much of a seamstress, but I didn't really see why it was so difficult. Eventually I decided to try the alteration myself with the bf's sewing machine. I just finished it and am pleased with the result. So...imagine what a professional could have done! I can't believe this place turned down my business because of the "impossibility" of an alteration which was so simple I managed to do it myself. I won't be returning for alterations. read more

The man claims that he told my uncle that they can't machine press because the buttons. He said I can't get them to press it by machine. Lies. We have been going to Sterling Cleaners forever. When it was destroyed by fire, we followed the owners to their other dry cleaners on Gerber Road. It's not that they do anything special with the dry cleaning, our loyalty is to Esther, co-owner with her husband. Esther remembers all of her customers, a receipt is never necessary to pick up your stuff. She doesn't speak much English, but she is the sweetest, kindest, friendliest person. She also does awesome alterations. She can eyeball you and know your measurements. We just adore her, DadBear brings her coffee and candy. read more

You get what you pay for! Best service and cleaners in the Sacramento area. I used to visit my local dry cleaners because it was so conveniently located and cheap. Then I found Sterling and now go out of my way! Professional and usually turn around items within two days unless you ask for sooner. I recently brought three sweaters in and one was pilled to the point that I almost gave it away. Sterling saved it and I am wearing it now to work! I have heard good things about their tailoring and will check out in the future.
