Sterling is a very well run faicility. There is a definite sense of community, foos quality is excellent and the staff super friendly. Also the faility is always very clean. Very close to shopping areas. My sister was well taken care here and moved because she had a family based location to move to. Sarah, the director is very straightforward and excellent interactions with Marco in the accounting department. And, last but not least, the resptionists are very helpful, attentive. My mother has gone to Sterling Court for the last 2 years for two months at a time. This year she will be coming for 3 months. She really enjoys her time at Sterling. The staff is wonderful especially Sarah who is the director. The food is truly delicious and healthy. It was remodeled a few years ago and it has a very inviting atmosphere. Awful experience here. Since this place was among the most expensive retirement homes in the Bay Area, I believed it would be the right place for my dad to stay in. The property looks very modern and gives a very good impression, but believe me the way the elderly is treated there is a nightmare. After 2 months living there my dad could not stop whining, we thought this was due to his age but after talking to someone whose parents lived at Sterling Court we realized that he was not exaggerating as the other person said his parents went through the same nightmare my dad experienced. Once he even fell and hit is head and he was ignored, they did not even bother to call 911 despite the fact that the total we pay to have him living here is supposed to include medical insurance. Do not bring anyone you love here, you will regret the rest of your life. read more

We are members of the community and also reside in San Mateo. We have had family friends from our community live at SC and now have elderly parents that may have been interested in living in such senior communities such as Sterling Court in the future. Based on my experience today coming in to see a client and being treated with such rudeness and disrespect was offputting. Being a registered nurse and being treated as "the help" by noone less other than the executive director who handed me her card really shows the colors of what's behind a residential facility that relies on payments from the elderly community we all serve. Of course we would also like to be able to park in the half empty garage when we come to see patients. Our visits are usually less than 45 min, sometimes 20-25 min. This is a massive building that takes up an entire block so parking and walking 2-3 blocks to come to see a patient while carrying a heavy bag along heavily-trafficked and poor condition of sidewalks along El Camino is NOT called being courteous or caring or respectful to visitors. The alternative is opening the garage and allowing visitors to park in the huge underground garage and save a long trek to be able to promptly see our assigned patients. Although I was informed today the underground garage which i had been allowed to park in in the past 2 weeks by on-site staff is only for "residents, their family and visitors" And nurses do not qualify as "visitors" Today the garage may also have been under remodel but what about future days? Please change your rigid rules and have a little more respect for those that actually do serve our community. Our community needs more than a facade. So sorry I had to experience this but thought this should not be left without a review which adds to the reviews that apparently preexisted mine. I sure hope this review serves as a reminder that Compassion and Customer Service still go a long way even if a person ranks high in a company-she's the face of the company. I can only hope the workers who signed on to work here helping senior citizens are treated with the dignity they deserve. I've read a number of reviews, that to me didn't really make much sense, like most places Services can go up or down depending on Staff, however, my mother has been living there for more than three years now, (not in assisted living) she's a smart active woman and believe me if there were any major problems with Sterling Court I would know about them, she's active in all sorts of organizations, and no places is perfect. They have actually listened to some of the suggestion she's made and improve some minor things that could've been done better, the food is good, the staff is great. The place is clean and they have lots of activity. Yes it is expensive, but not much more than others, and as they say, you get what you pay for and we have no issues, she's happy there; what more could we asked for! read more

Phewww terrible experience, they were alright at the beginning but in the end I ended up moving my dad to a different place where he was taken cared of. Not only they were mean to everyone who was temporarily living in this place, but they also overcharged me over $6k. I had to take these thieves to court to get my money back. Sterling Court is an independent living facility for active seniors. I have a very special relative who has been living here for about a year now. I have been very satisfied with the staff, accommodations, schedule and cuisine. Sarah, the executive director, has been nothing but helpful. She is very organized and personable. She knows everyone on staff and within the community. This may seem like a small token, but after having toured all the facilities in the area, I find it is an anomaly. The way the place is organized is that the apartments are rented out by Sterling Court. With each monthly fee comes access to dinner every night, all activities and outings. If your loved one needs any additional care, you hire a group of caregivers that work within the Sterling Court community, but are not staff there. These caregivers have been pre-approved and checked out by Sterling Court and are trusted to work there and know how the community works. I can only speak for the caregivers that I have -- Bessie, John and Hilda -- but they have been most helpful and accommodating. It is difficult to choose a facility for your loved ones, but I recommend starting here. Go here and then tour the rest. You'll see what I mean. read more

If I could give this place less than one star I would. This place is horrible and I can not believe anyone would be so cruel as to put their parents, aunt/uncle, or grandparents in here. This place is not a place for "active seniors" anymore and it has become more like a place of house arrest for the elderly. Many of the residents in the DE-evolving establishment are like family to me. I have watched as the "director" would write off the family members of a passed resident, and I have seen the same person intimidate the residents themselves. No one speaks up for you Sterling Court, but I will. I love these residents and they deserve the best. Not the unruly powerhouse "director" that they have controlling their every move now. I hope this review will help people make the right decision when it comes to housing their loved ones. Because this is not the place. You could ask any person that lives there, and they will tell you (if they're not too terrified). This place used to be a family until a certain person came into control roughly 3 years ago. DO NOT PUT YOUR LOVE ONE HERE! My last visit here, I overheard a manager telling a staff member NOT to help out an elder who was walking by carrying a heavy load. She said it in a very demeaning way. I asked my mom who the manager was, and she said that it was Sterling's executive director! My mom went off afterwards how this place had changed ever since the new director had arrived. My father moved into Sterling Court almost 2 years ago. Sarah and the staff are wonderful!!! They welcomed him and made him feel right at home. They encouraged him to get involved in the activities and social events. It took a couple months for him to adjust but he has settled in nicely and enjoys the companionship of all the other residents. The apartments are updated and very nice. The meals that are prepared by Chef Denis are wonderful. I appreciate the open communication with Sarah and the staff and can always ask questions if I need to. I visit regularly and enjoy seeing the residents hanging out together. There is something for everyone there. My mom moved to Sterling Court with my dad about 2 years ago, but my dad passed away about 7 months ago. While my mother would love to be back home, she knows that that is no longer possible. The good thing is that she has grown to love Sterling Court. She has met some wonderful new friends, and the staff has been terrific to her. The environment is so homey and comfortable. Our 90-year-old mother had been resisting moving out of our family home, where she lived for 50+ years. She lived there alone for the last 15 years, but that became untenable and unsafe for her over the last several months. We finally convinced her to go on a tour of Sterling Court, which had been highly recommended to us by several people who live in the area and have family or friends there. She was so impressed by the graciousness of all the staff, the delicious food (we were all treated to lunch in the dining room), the clean and stylish facilities, the spotless apartment with a deck and cathedral ceiling, and the friendliness of the residents. We checked out a few other places, and Sterling Court was the clear favorite. My mother moved in a few weeks later, and we are all so pleased at how nice everyone and everything there is, and how everyone went out of their way to welcome her. I've met a couple dozen residents by now, and all have been kind, relaxed, and appear to be well-cared-for and content. By its nature, it's a stressful transition for our mother, yet she seems to be doing well and we've been pleasantly surprised that she has not once said that she wishes she could still live at her old home in SF. My 93 year old Dad just moved from an independent living facility in Florida to Sterling Court to be near to his three daughters and their families. Ordinarily this would be a very difficult transition, however everyone, from the directors, administrators, front desk personnel, chef, handyman and other residents, helped him adjust very quickly. This upscale residence is permeated by a sense of warmth and caring. In particular Sarah, the Executive Director, has been incredibly helpful and patient in handling our barrage of inquiries and requests. Although it's only been two weeks, my Dad is raving about how much he loves living there and is even asking that we don't visit quite so often (helicopter children) so that he can meet and spend time with the other residents. read more

One day after out-patient surgery I went for a walk. By not listening to my Doctor's advice to, "take it easy for few days", I found myself in total pain and stranded at El Camino & Peninsula Avenue in San Mateo. I went into the Sterling Court "senior residences" and asked the gentleman at the front desk to please call my wife and have her come pick me up. Victor (the gentleman at the front desk) did so without hesitation as well as offering me assistance. As I waited outside for my wife Victor came out and updated me while he checked on my condition. Our father has happily resided at Sterling Court for 4 years. My brother & I weren't sure if dad would like living at a senior facility & we were relieved that he loved it!! He loves it as Sterling Court has a caring & fun staff. Dad's day is filled with fun activities which include reading in the library, meeting friends for delicious meals,playing Black Jack, attending Happy Hour and the weekly Coffee Klatch etc.Dad has made wonderful friends with the staff and residents. Sterling Court has been wonderful to my Mom, and Sarah, the Executive Director, and Sylvia (Front Desk), deserve special mention since they made our lives so much better by being cooperative, suggesting solutions to our issues taking care of my Mom, and making this stressful time in our life that much easier. My wife and I spent hours at Sterling Court almost every day taking care of my Mom (along with a caregiver) and my recommendation is based on experience - not hearsay, nor third-hand information. We lived the Sterling Court Experience daily. If you are looking for a great place for an elder in your life, this is the best place we have found. It is clean, well maintained, and the food is really good. There are lots of activities and an onsite beauty salon. My Mom has recently passed on, and the lesson that we have taken from this experience, is that growing old isn't easy. Having Sterling Court help us through this journey has been wonderful.
