My mother stayed at Mills Estate Villa for several years. It was great when her dementia wasn't as bad. However, once she became distant and rejected help, the facility complied with her requests to not give her a shower or help her clean her teeth. This went on for at least a year. Her room smelled bad. When I asked two different staff members when was the last time they gave her a shower, they didn't answer. They just told me she refuses. When I informed the facility that I was taking her out of there care, they suddenly began giving her showers. I understand my mother can shout and object, but she's 87 has dementia and is in a wheelchair. She doesn't have the mental capacity to make decisions regarding her hygiene. There's no excuse to let her go months without a shower. When I came to remove her a few days early, I found her asleep in her wheelchair. Everyone else was in bed with pajamas, not her. I am certain she slept fully clothed in her wheelchair with a wet diaper many times before. The next few days when I visited her, her diaper was so saturated that her shirt and pants were wet. Even the following day she had no pants because they were wet. I think they only changed her once a day. If your loved one can engage well with others and is outgoing and cooperative, this is a great place to be. If there mood changes, you will need to ride the facility to work for their pay and not collect the high cost and do nothing. My mom is now in a memory care unit out of state. I am close by to keep a better eye on her. read more

My mother lived at Mills Estate Villa for three years, and it was a very good fit for her. She had memory issues, and the time came when she needed much more oversight than I could provide at home. It was a hard transition for her, as it usually is for everyone involved. It was difficult to watch her go through it, but she settled in after a month or so. One huge benefit of this transition was that I was no longer the primary caregiver responsible for routines like dressing, bathing, and toileting. This eliminated a lot of frustration between us and allowed my time with her to be of much higher quality and more relaxed. Our visits consisted of reading magazines and sitting outside in the sun on the patio. I was able to fit in a short visit to her most days as the facility is near my home. I believe this helped maintain her memory connection to me as her memory issues advanced. Mills Estate Villa is a small facility with a "grandmother's home" aesthetic. It was a welcoming place to visit, and the staff was very kind to her and to all of our family. I was there almost daily and observed most of their practices closely. I believe the following aspects make them a very high-quality facility: 1. Long-term management and staff: The director has been there for 30 years, and most of the staff have been there for over 10 years. I didn't realize how important this was until I spoke with a friend whose parent was at a facility with constantly changing management and staff. That inconsistency led to lost practices, chaotic procedures, and unnecessary challenges for the residents. 2. Strong routines and controls: They maintained reliable systems for medication dosing and refills, meals, bedtimes, and resident checks. 3. Responsive management and staff: Whenever I had a request to better support my mother, they addressed it promptly and effectively. 4. Small facility with a stable staff: This allowed everyone to be familiar with all the residents' situations and needs. 5. Clean and well-maintained environment: The facility was kept clean, with good laundering services. 6. Engaging activities: They scheduled and promoted a variety of activities on a monthly calendar, including exercise, music, games, and entertainment. 7. Support for external providers: They supported visits from nurses, physical therapists, and dental care providers. I found they had a strong handle on daily care and entertainment for the residents. A few additional perks stood out to me: - An on-site hair salon with a talented hairdresser who came in once a week (Thursday was "good hair day," my mom's favorite). - A sunny patio to enjoy the outdoors. - Religious communion services on Sundays. - Festivities and decor to celebrate most holidays, which included friends and family of the residents. They also supported hospice services, which allowed us to bring my mom back to her place for a private, cared-for, and comfortable end of life. It wasn't a perfect place--no place ever is, including her own home--but Mills Estate helped me enjoy these challenging years with my mom. I am truly grateful for the kindness and care of their staff and management. read more

My parents NEVER wanted to leave their lovely home. But we reached the point where we could not give them adequate care at home. Mills Estate Villa has been wonderful! It's comfortable and nice, more like a hotel than a retirement home, and the staff are amazing. Everyone has been super helpful, both in getting them settled in and taking care of their daily needs. It's a family-owned facility, not some corporate machine, and that shows in the thoughtfulness given to my parents. We enjoy visiting them there, and enjoy chatting with their neighbors as much as they do. After months of shopping around, checking out the big places and the little places alike, it was a huge relief to find the one that's just right. They don't offer unlimited free rides, but they do offer a stronger sense of community and plenty of great activities my parents have enjoyed doing. This transition is always hard to make, and I rest easy knowing that my parents are safe and well cared-for. read more

My Mother in Law spent 2 years at Mills Estate Villa from 2016 to 2018. She lived with my husband and I for 5 years and the last year we had Senior Assist person staying with her for 3-4 hours while we were at Work. After a small stroke and a couple of falls that she got lucky with no broken bones ...we decided she needed to be checked in on 24/7. Mills Estates took good care of her and she even enjoyed some of the activities until lung cancer in her last 8 months took away most of her energy. Between the hospice care and the caregivers at Mills they made sure she was comfortable in her last months and were always great about feeding her some of the favorites I brought in for her. We appreciate all the care they gave our Mom especially when she was bedridden. It is a tough job and they did their best to entice her to eat and kept her clean in those final months. My husband was diagnosed with a glioblastoma, so the declination in his health was shockingly rapid and aggressive. I'm pretty sure I'd be at the Funny Farm if the kind caregivers at Mills Estate Villa did not come to my rescue. Amy and Anne facilitated a quick admission for me. The good news is that provided much needed relief for me. The bad news is that, due to his rapid descent, that meant he needed much, much more care than Assisted Living could provide. He really needed Memory Care, which is where I ultimately placed him. However, before the transfer could take place, all the caregivers went above and beyond to make sure my husband was well cared for and kept safe. I truly love and appreciate the entire staff. I cannot sufficiently express my deep gratitude for their kindness, expertise, and dedication. My sister and I are most grateful to the wonderful administration and staff at Mills Estate Villa for the outstanding care they gave our mother for the last eight of her 100 years. When it came time for Mom to leave her 2-story home with too many stairs we shopped around in the vicinity and found the Villa. Some places we looked were too large and institutional, others too small for someone who likes her privacy. The Villa is just right -- large enough for there to be activities and people to get to know, and small enough that the caregivers know and respond to the residents' needs. The Villa is a class operation: carefully managed, impeccably clean, well staffed, in a homelike setting. Residents eat together in the dining room at an assigned table, so Mom got to know and become friends with her dining companions. There is an inviting outdoor patio, which was a godsend for visits during the current pandemic restrictions. We are most grateful for the scrupulously adhered to protocols observed during the current health crisis. Under the care of these professionals, we never had to worry about Mom's health and safety, and that is saying a lot. The holiday parties, pet therapy, Sunday devotions and monthly masses were Mom's favorites. Even under the Covid-19 restrictions, the staff gave my mother a joyful 100th birthday party, and the smile on her face in the picture is one we'll always remember. My wife and want to thank all the caregivers for the excellent care provided my mother, during her 5 years at Mills Estate Villa from 2008 through December of 2013. When we recognized that my mom needed more care than could be provided in her home we did our due diligence and visited several care facilities in the Burlingame area. We decided that Mills Estate Villa, a family run facility, was the place for Mom. We were able to visit three to four times a week because Mills Estate Villa was only five minutes from our home. Many times we b brought our toddler granddaughters to visit mom and the other residents who enjoyed their youthful spirit. And my German shepherd, a therapy dog, became a regular fixture with many residents happily awaiting her arrival and interaction. Coming so often there wasn't much we missed. Whenever we observed something my mom needed it was taken care of. We felt like we were part of the Mills Estate Villa family. Things were taken care of quickly and graciously. Mom loved the activities especially the musical presentations. She made sure we were there for the family activities around the national holiday celebrations. We have her photo with Santa Claus in a special place. When there were medical issues to tend to you were quick to call us and help us get the appropriate care. No road is without potholes and when there was one you were always there to fill it and move on. We were never met with shallow explanations or a look that indicated that we didn't know what we were talking about. Right up to Mom's passing you were always there for our family. Our mom's stay really extended her years, all 100 of them, because you and the caregivers were so thoughtful and caring. We can only say, "Thank you!" read more

My grandmother spent her final week at Mills Estate Villa. The staff treated her with kindness and made sure all her needs were met with gentle care. They were also very kind and responsive whenever any of us family members needed anything. At least one family member was there with my grandmother 24/7 and we always felt welcome. On our first night, the manager came to personally say hello and introduce herself even though it was almost midnight. She hadn't been able to come earlier in the day because she was at a long training session, but instead of going straight home after a long day, she came to see how her new resident was doing. During the day, I saw the staff treating all the residents with kindness. Even people who weren't mobile at all were included in the common room for fun activities, not just left alone in their rooms. The activities leader and all the staff worked together to create a fun and happy atmosphere. Their activities seemed to be at the right level for the residents. If you push the bell during the night, the response time was always prompt, which is impressive. I've been in skilled nursing facilities where it almost always took 10-20 minutes (which is WAY too long when an older person needs to go to the bathroom at night!). The rooms at Mills Estate Villa are all very clean and well-kept. I would definitely recommend Mills Estate Villa to anyone who needs care in an assisted living setting. read more

It has been a blessing that Mills Estate Villa has a respite care program for our 103 years old mother for the last few years. Not only does Mills Estate Villa have an caring, excellent and professional staff, it also has fun activities that our mother enjoys every time she is at MEV. She has been rejuvenated after her stay. Activities such as : Morning exercices, bingo games, music/motion and chair yoga are stimulating for our mother. During her Chinese New Year stay, she was pleasantly surprised to have received a red envelop filled with money. It was also a treat for her to get a manicure. She hasn't had one for over 20 years! She was so happy with ruby red nails. MEV also spoiled our mother with a nice hair cut during one of her stays. My now-91-year-old father has lived here since September 11, 2018. He is mostly blind, a fall risk, and has vascular dementia that often causes him to be confused and to also have occasional temper flare-ups. The staff, lead by Delia Montano, is top-notch, and deal with my father calmly and compassionately. They are responsive to him and to me and always keep me updated on what's happening. All of this is important since I live 3,000 miles away in New York--and I communicate regularly with the staff by text, Email, and phone. Everyone is always on the same page and know what is going on with my dad. Given my father's limitations, he's not able to participate in many activities, but I have seen first-hand the recreational director playing games and holding presentations. Mills often has guest performers and musical artists, and local school groups come in to interact with residents which gives a multi-generational flavor to the atmosphere. The food is consistently good and varied, and I have enjoyed Christmas and Thanksgiving meals there with my dad and his friends. During the pandemic, CiminoCare and Mills Estate have done a remarkable job in keeping all of their residents and staff safe. They are always ahead of whatever the Health Department dictates, and have consistently put stringent practices and protocols in place at least a couple weeks ahead of State and City mandates. The sanitation and cleanliness levels of Mills is superior. Kaiser Nurse Practitioners are regular visitors, and they also remark on the high standards at Mills. Also...Mills Estate is a happy place. The staff and workers are upbeat, pleasant people. When you walk in, people are smiling and joking. The caregivers actually *care*, and their attitude makes Mills Estate the rare kind of place that gives comfort not only to residents--but to their families. I am grateful for Mills Estate, and I know my dad is well-cared for. He's content. And that's the very best I can ask for. read more

Stole my grandma's wedding ring! Second ring theft... Today would have been my Grandmother's 101st birthday - we lost her about 6 weeks ago. Up until two months ago, I would have given Mills Estate Villa a glowing review. My grandma lived here for the past 5+ years, and the staff, facilities, and programs have always been amazing. Why 1 star? Some form of slime that works here stole my grandma's wedding ring - which she wore every day of her life for 75 years, as she lay dying. Hospice was called in, she would live about another 8 or 9 days, and someone who works there was sick enough to steal the ring literally off her finger. This beautiful memento that would have been passed to family is gone. I felt nauseated every time after, as I came to hold hands with my grandma. And part of the reason is that about 4 years ago, someone else there stole another ring from her room - a not-very-valuable opal ring. My grandma and I share October as our birth month, and opal is our stone, and someone denied me the lovely token of having her ring. It makes me beyond sick that people would do this. And I will never forgive the owners or staff for not going after the offender. A police report has netted nothing. If you end up having a family member come to live here, do not allow them to bring ANYTHING of value. Despicable. read more

My mother has lived at Mills Estate Villa for 1 year and 4 months. My family and I are very pleased about the care she receives. From the owners and daily manager to the kind, skilled and long term employed general staff members, clients receive proper care, medications on time and really good food. We are notified immediately if something occurs in terms of my mother's health. There are a number of activities provided for residents during the week including spiritual gatherings for those interested. The facility is clean and carefully maintained as well as welcoming with pretty shrubs and flowers. We have peace of mind knowing that my mother is safe. We are grateful. read more

I am happy to recommend Mills Estate Villa for your loved one. My mother lived with me and my family before I could no longer care for her at home. First she tried another new and larger local facility that had fancier accommodations, very impressive at first glance, but soon it became apparent that the personal care and attention there were lacking. Plus, I didn't like the corporate feel. We went to the Villa where my mother stayed for about 14 months. The difference was palpable. MEV is a smaller, Italian family owned operation with more of an intimate feel. I always felt comfortable with my mother's care there. As I live in Burlingame, I visited daily and the staff was always welcoming, especially the manager, Delia The price was more reasonable, too, than some of the other places I checked. read more
