I've was saved by the amazing professionalism of the staff at Sterling Optical! Yesterday, I had the unfortunate experience of my glasses that I've only had a year broke on me without warning! And mind you I was taken completely by surprise while driving and I was leaving on vacation the next day. That being said, I had gone to other eyeglasses places throughout the mall only to be greeted by uncaring and rude workers who couldn't care less to offer me a solution or find a suitable replacement. i even went to local jewellers to see if they could sodder my metal frame to give me a quick fix, but they told me that it wouldn't work. So just when I thought I'd be traveling with broken glasses to Europe, fate had other plans for me! I decided to give one more store a chance to see if they could help me. The moment I walked in I was greeted by caring staff members. One more specifically, "Nancy," who I later found out to be the manager spoke to me kindly and said, "Don't worry! I'll see what I can do?" So while helping other customers she effortlessly looked through various frames and at the time I was thinking of buying a cheaper pair. I had no idea that they could find me such a beautiful pair of designer "Prada" glasses that wouldn't break the bank! So while she looked we considered either shaving some of the lenses off, Nancy said "No, I'll find you the right frame!" And she did! So far so good! I'm happy with my purchase and as a result, of my great experience, I will continue to shop at Sterling Optical (Next to Macy's and Hollister) from now on. If you're looking to purchase reasonable priced glasses, don't go here, unless you're looking to pay $300.00 or more. Even if you have insurance and/or union member, the cost is yet and still unreasonable. As a matter of fact, let's say you decide to visit the eye doctor, he or she will no longer provide your PD (which is important when purchasing eye glasses elsewhere or online. Avoid the misery, I strongly suggest going elsewhere. read more

I noticed them wiping down the counter, so I think they are keeping things safe for everyone. Went to Sterling for an exam, new eyeglasses and a minor repair to my current eyeglass. Upon entering the store, I showed the salesperson the problem with my eyeglass. The little screw in the hinge that holds the template to the frame hand fallen off. He went to the back and spoke with the "technician". He came back and told me that the "technician" said it cannot be repaired. I told the salesperson that this has happened in the past and I was able to take the screw off and old pair of eye glass and replaced it myself however I don't have those old eyeglasses anymore. He went back and spoke to the "technician" again and came back with the same result. So I ask if I can just buy the screw from them. Salesperson went back for the third time to speak with the "technician" and said they won't sell me the screw because it can't be fixed. I was going to leave but because I made an appointment for the eye exam, I felt that I should go through with it. The exam went well. Right after the exam, I was immediately passed to an eyeglass salesperson. I ask if the glasses would be made here, she said yes. I'm thinking if this "technician" can't put a screw in, how can I trust this person to make glasses for me. So I said no thanks to the new glasses. I called Williams Eye Works and asked if they repaired eyeglasses. They said sure. I went over and show them my glasses. They fixed it and put in new nose pads in less than 10 minutes. They didn't even charge me! So I decided to buy my new glasses there. Not the cheapest, but great service worth every penny. read more

came back here after bad experience in 2018, well nothings changed. new doctor was nice and efficient. Annette on the other hand who tried to sell us glasses not covered was rude and couldn't be bothered by helping us at all .. she didn't like that we weren't going to spend money on glasses that were very overpriced. this woman definitely needs a lesson on customer service and how to act and treat customers. Very rude and made for an unpleasant experience. it is obvious she works on commission because once she wasn't going to make money on us her attitude was beyond rude. this is not a way to run a business. I got a pair of glass at a very high price from them in early January 2020. They called me in October telling me to contact my medical insurance so they can get paid. When I went in there was no mention of insurance requirements, if there were I would have walked out. I figure the over $600+ I paid was sufficient for a pair of glasses. You don't call 9 months after a purchase about additional monies. I think it is a scam as was alluded to by other reviewers. I told them if they keep bothering me I would file a complaint with Consumer Affairs, the Attorney General of NY and the Better Business Bureau. IR read more

Scam Watch how they proceed to scam you out of your insurance so you would have to pay out of pocket for deductible and glasses when you have a union that would provide free exam and glasses. Will never recommend my friends or family. After making the appointment one day, Making it clear I had union insurance and going back for my appointment was a total waste of my time. And then to proceed to tell me I was not a member of my union when I am a retired city worker, is shameful! They rather see you pay cash than go through my union For a free pair of glasses . Made an appointment withh the eye doctor for a basic exam. The appointment was for 1:45PM and we arrived around 1:30 to check in. It is currently 2:30 and we still have not been checked by an eye doctor. What is the point of making appointments if you are unable to accommodate them? Located on the Lower Level/Macy's at the Staten Island Mall, the ladies at Sterling Opticals provide 100% customer service without making it about the sale. The Manager (Cookie) and her Sales Associates never rushed me or added pressure, in that way when I left, I felt like I didn't regret my purchase. Everyone was attentive to detail to my own personal concerns and VERY PATIENT. I noticed how patient they were with the previous difficult customer. I'm very happy I went here. After the initial visit, the turn around time to pick up my new eyeglasses was about a day. I brought in a pair of lenses previously purchased from another eyeglass store, and Sterling Opticals were able to use the lenses on a new silhouette frame. Two years ago I came for an exam because I knew I needed glasses and the eye doctor was rude and couldn't be bothered. I was also helped by an older blond who rushed me into my purchase. Fast forward two years I came back last month for an eye exam. The same rude dr did my exam but now I had the most pleasant, helpful and sweet sales woman. Her name was Christine (hard for me to forget) and she was really great! I decided to keep my same frames and change the lenses. Since moving to Staten Island I haven't found a optical store I've liked till I came here. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. I was helped by Kathy and she was such a delight. I came in for an eye exam and a new pair of glasses and also new contacts. It's hard to find frames that fit my face because I have a round shape and my nose is really small. So it's hard to find the perfect frames. But Kathy took the time to help my find the perfect ones. Usually sales associates just hand glasses that you want to try on but Kathy suggested ones that she thinks I should try on and such. I would say I spent over an hour trying on all the frames in the store. She was patient and helpful the whole time. I was also helped by the manager of the place, Cookie who was wonderful also. I also ordered contacts and got new lenses for my old glasses. This will be the place I will be ordering my contacts from now on and future new glasses. read more

I went there recently to have my lenses transferred from a temporary frame to a replacement high-end frame. I had not bought the new frame there. At first the lady at counter ( I think it was the manager), wasn't sure it could be done. However the tech did it a beautiful job. Best of all, the manager didn't charge me. I thought it a very thoughtful gesture, and wonderful customer service! While there, I noticed that they have a wide-selection of high-end frames, which I couldn't find in other stores. I had went to pick up my prescriptions glasses that I payed for and got a broken pear instead and then they told me I couldn't get my money back. I wasn't happy to be going to the mall for an eye appointment, I absolutely hate the mall. This doctor was recommended by so many friends, the wait wasn't insane, the staff was very nice, and the doctor was very thorough and patient especially since I told her I am very squeamish when it comes to things by my eyes and apologized beforehand if I will be a little difficult to deal with. She was comforting and explained every little thing and what will be best for me to use. Then we came to picking out frames, I've never been insured by a company that gave up to a certain price, it was always 1 pair a year for free- it was a little hard to find frames in a price range I'm able to afford, finally found a pair but I may have to go back and find out if they were the wrong ones for me because I am getting horrible headaches from the pressure of them resting on my nose. But everyone there was really nice so I'm hoping this goes well. I'd totally recommend coming here, just if you have a certain amount you're looking to spend for frames be ready to be there for a while cause the selection is enormous and the prices aren't on there for you to see or weed out to what works best *update* called them and explained how the new glasses were giving me a migraine didn't know if it were the frames or the progressive lenses- they helped me so much over the phone, totally did what they said and everything awesome! read more

Not a fan. I bought my glasses here and it stained my face. The cheap metal frames here are horrible. I addressed the situation to them, they barely flinched. I told them they should remove those type of frames..they didn't address it. I have 1199 insurance and I wasn't expecting high end glasses..but don't give crappy low end brands with low quality.. My insurance did pay for it after all. Some decent frames and lens is all I want. They did exchange it for plastic frames.. Had to see the dermatologist about the staining on the bridge of my nose and side of my face where the glasses were sitting. The doctor at this store was efficient and detailed, staff was no good. If you need a script go there for the doctor and get your glasses somewhere else. I'm being generous with one star. read more

I'm a dentist and the arm of my dental loupes broke. I didn't have a back up pair and to repair them would have taken 6-8weeks. I couldn't be without them for that long. I decided to walk in to Sterling to see if they could repair or replace the arm, as all dentist know they cannot practice without their loupes. Sure enough they were able to replace the arm. The arm may not be exact as the one that broke, but my loupes are back to working. Even in dentistry nothing if perfect but you manage to make the worst scenarios work out. I'm so happy I met Nancy who was so pleasant and patent with my issue, as well as the technician who repaired them (the young man who I forgot his name , I'm sorry). Anyways, I'm very pleased and happy that I don't need to strain my back or wait 6-8 weeks. You guys are amazing ! read more

Go here if you want to get completely ripped off. They will lie to you about how much your insurance will be covering. Their prices are unreasonable and they don't care about your opinion. I needed to personally call my insurance after they mislead me into thinking that my insurance wouldn't be covering my polycarbonate lenses. After speaking to the representative for my insurance, the manager said "oh sorry, you're right". It took 2 hours of her trying to convince me I was wrong for her to realize that I WAS correct and I wasn't charged correctly. Although against their no refunds policy, I was of course granted a refund after the headache they gave me. They should hire people who actually know anything about medical billing.
