I've been having back and hip problems for 2 years now. Visited other specialist and chiropractors that just couldn't fix me. OK, so you all need to know that I've seen some of LA's best specialists, in terms of chiropractors, physiotherapists, and physical therapists. Why? In July 2010, I had L4/5 lumbar microdiscectomy for a sequestered disc that had progressively worsened since I originally messed it up many years ago in powerlifting competition. They never tell you after surgery that the area isn't going to completely feel normal after the operation. So here I am, about a year later, feeling like my hips are out of whack and that my low back may have the same problem it did before the surgery. This is where Dr. Steve comes in. His chiropractic adjustments, combined with the ART (ActiveReleaseTechnique) method he uses to help realign the muscle fascia that's gotten clumped all around the scar tissue area are basically the only combination that's helped the area feel progressively close to normal again. In other words, it's so far only been through these treatments that I can definitively say that after the surgery, I do feel back to normal. Prior to these treatments, chiropractic adjustments alone would only help me temporarily and physical therapy exercises were not addressing the needs of the local scar tissue build up. So a little bit late on this but certainly wouldn't forget to write about my amazing experience with Dr Hoorn. I fell off my motorcycle and was misdiagnosed several times before I went to see Dr Hoorn. His diagnoses of my rotator cuffs (leg) sliding out of place as a result of the impact from the fall (forgive my uneducated explanation) was spot on, and after a few treatments I felt a tremendous improvement in my everyday ability to do pretty much anything physical. When I tell you Dr. Steve Hoorn has saved me dozens of times I'm not joking. I'm no spring chicken anymore and after many years of gymnastics and college cheerleading my back can go out at any point. Then add in some stress and literally I am a broken man or curled up in the fetal position. Today is a great example of how his skills are miraculous. I have a very physical job and for the past month I have been doing stretches with the back roller, soaking in the hot tub, and taking antiinflammatories. Dr. Steve is seriously, the greatest thing since sliced bread. Actually, he's even better than that because I can do without sliced bread, but I cannot do without this man. I had shoulders pain that kept me from working out for years and he fixed me so well that I didn't even have a twinge for the last 2 years. I started swimming recently and my shoulder started acting up. I went back to see him and I am literally walking on air. I have tennis elbow that has been giving me an increasing amount of pain and I tweaked my back doing medicine ball cleans the other day. Just one session and I feel sooooo much better. Dr. Hoorne is a miracle worker. I suffered with intermittent lower back pain, chronic shoulder pain (20+ years) and intermittent ankle swelling from Tai Chi. What a mess! I had a constant nagging pain in my back and neck for the past year. Straight Up Exceptional. Not sure if people in Los Angeles realize how hard and how frustrating it can be to find a truly skilled Active Release Specialist. Just had an initial consult and first treatment with Doctor Steve Hoorn on N La Cienega in West Hollywood. I have been trying to find an A.R.T. specialist and Chiropractor who can work on a nagging lower back injury. This man is as good as it gets. First things first he took his time with me as a patient and it was 1 on 1 (he wasn't bouncing between 2, 3, or 4 patients at the same time in his office). Second he stretched and adjusted all parts of the body - he didn't just focus directly on the trouble spot. Last - the adjustments were thorough and effective. One more thing -- he doesn't over commit his patients financially -- he didn't try to sell me on a 12 visit package for bunch of money. Frankly he didn't have to. I will be using Dr Hoorn for maintenance and preventative adjustments either weekly or at least on a monthly basis. If you have a trouble spot or something that is not resolving go see Doctor Hoorn. Had some shoulder impingement issues that kept me out of the gym for about 1.5 years and generally made my life hell, had tried rest and ncaids, physical therapy which didn't do jack. I looked up a method called A.R.T, looked through some local chiropractors, contacted Dr. Hoorn and booked an appointment. Let me just say, right off the bat that although I was hopeful I was equally as skeptical. When I showed up, I immediately felt comfortable with him. It's totally obvious that he legitimately cares about his patients, unlike the physical therapist he didn't at all give me the impression that he's just in it for the money, and wants you to get the hell out once he's got it. Really stand up guy. Plus he's pretty built so it made it alot easier for me to take him seriously when he was giving me workout advice in relation to my shoulder injury. About the treatment itself, I mentioned A.R.T, which isn't actually a chiropractic specific treatment, but in fact he explained that the majority of what he was doing to me was some standard chiropractic stuff with a little A.R.T mixed in. I know a lot of people are skeptical of chiropractic medicine but after going 1.5 years with shoulder issues, they were getting weaker, and the pain was worsening, yet after one visit with Dr.hoorn i felt good. Like, 80% better. Yeah, one visit. Don't get me wrong, dr.hoorn cautioned me that the majority of his patients take about 3 visits on average, some longer some less, but I guess I was one of the lucky ones. I went to the gym, did the lifts that were gave me trouble to begin with, and I didn't feel the weakness, I didn't feel my shoulder giving out at a certain range of motion, and I felt no pain on my right shoulder, which was the worse of the two, and very very minimal pain on the left one. I ended up going for a second treatment just for some fine tuning, a nerve was still getting pinched in my traps if i moved my head a certain way and moved my arm a certain way. I went to the gym the following day and ended up having no issues with my left shoulder. It's obvious that I need to strengthen my rotator cuff to get everything 100% back the way it was, but I don't at all feel the pain and experiencing the weakness that plagued me for so long. I've finally fell comfortable renewing my gym membership! I might end up going for a 3rd visit in a month or two just for some extra shoulder insurance. As corny as it sounds, dr.hoorn changed my outlook on life. I was feeling pretty down, not just because I couldn't work out but even lifting a milk jug felt uncomfortable. After almost 1 full year of pain due to tendinitis in my right wrist from typing and mousing, I had a minor surgery. In surgery, it was discovered I had an extremely inflamed nerve...no small feat to cure. It takes time and patience. Luckily I found Dr. Steve! It did take a while, but I am at about 95% and haven't been to an appointment for a couple of months now. I can be somewhat of a skeptic and it takes a lot to earn my trust, but he is intuitive and knows what to work on, what to do, how much to do etc...I trust him and I also found him to be very encouraging. I try to refer him to as many people as possible becuase I don't think I would have healed at this level without him, I can't recommend Dr. Steve enough! read more
