Steve initially came out and gave us estimates for both exterior and interior. He was a no haggle, straight shooter. The invoices he gave had everything broken down into separate categories so I could see what I wanted done and what each would cost. I was not sure I was going to be able to afford to do everything I wanted. I liked that it wasn't an all or nothing type of place. I decided to go with them...within a month they had started my house. I hired them for both exterior and interior. For both jobs, they came with large crews. This isn't just two guys, I'm talking 5-8 men. Not sure if that is the norm or they had some extra to spare. Before they started I asked about my pergola/lattice also getting fixed. Steve was honest about what they could do. I thought the whole thing would have to be redone. He disagreed and said it could my 2x4 and 4x4 were still ok and I could save money by replacing the tops only. He told me the reason I had so much damage to the top was because whoever built it before we moved in used 8ft beams for a 10ft patio. They cut additional 2ft sections to cover the gaps. With the winds we have here some separated and flew off. He suggested full 10ft beams for the top to stop that from happening. They were able to tighten up the existing frame, add a top and repaint. I appreciated that he didn't try and upsell me as he easily could have. For the exterior they properly prepped the house filling in any cracks and patching stucco. The crew also dug a little below the dirt line in the planter to make sure it was painted below incase of some erosion to soil. They pressure washed the exterior before painting. They are respectful of your home and do their best to minimize overspray. I had a couple areas that after they were done and it dried were not quite even looking so they came back and touched it up. They explained to me that some areas would look a little different due to how the wood/stucco was originally fixed (not by them). They completed the job in about a week to satisfaction. A month later they painted pretty much the whole interior including stair banister and a couple cabinets (linen and bathroom vanity upstairs). They filled in nail holes and repaired any defects. We had baseboards put in but not caulked in...they caulked in before they painted. The caulking could have been a little neater as I see a joint split in one section and a few clumpy spots but better than what I would have done. I pointed out a few areas that got bumped and the foreman said he was already aware and was going to be fixing but has to wait until it dried. The next day you could not even tell where the fix happened. I did have one issue where our shutters were closed too early by their crew when they finished. When we went to open we saw paint stuck to our shutters with some paint splatters. We contacted them and they promptly sent a few workers back. The main guy they sent back checked all of the shutters even the high up ones we couldn't see or even open to be honest. He told us to leave them open for 72 hours for paint to cure. They were able to remedy the situation and without damage to the shutters. Overall, I am happy with the work. What impressed me the most was the responsiveness of Steve and Karen. Anytime we needed to have any questions answered, they were available and got back to us within a day. They stand by their work and will come up with a solution if any arise. They were not the cheapest quote we got but not the highest either. Good honest company. read more

Once again were were completely satisfied with Steve Shook Painting. We recently had about half of our home interior painted, and we are very pleased with the results. Steve is an excellent communicator, and is very clear when discussing options, scheduling, specific services, etc. There were no surprises, and who likes surprises when working with a contractor? Also, his estimates are based on precise measurements, and he can provide unit pricing in his quotation. That makes it easy to add or subtract items to stay within a budget. It was estimated to be a 2-day job, and it was completed in 2 days. Steve had as many as four men on the job. All of them were courteous and skilled, and they respected us and our home. One thing I noticed is that they got along very well, and there was an atmosphere of harmony during the project. Sometimes with other contractors you could tell there was some tension or conflict, but not here. One other thing to mention is that Steve can handle other kinds of work as well, so we had some handyman-type things we needed done, and that made it super convenient for us. Can I leave ZERO stars??? Let's start with the estimate first. Came out, talked over me, sensed attitude, and told my husband I really wasn't sure. Got one other quote (my bad) and ended up trying Steve's crap company. Fast forward three months, I see a man (METH HEAD to the max) in a small white van approaching my house that literally looks like he doesn't belong in the neighborhood with how rough he looks. No joke, I thought he was a porch pirate. Upon him backing into my drive way (moment I realized he was here to power wash the house) I noticed him uncontrollably moving and pressing the gas and brake on and off so much he almost backed into my garage!!! He gets out looking like a dirty homeless person and WILL NOT walk up to me and stands in the street trying his very best to stop moving and grinding his teeth. I immediately told him nicely I needed to speak with Steve more and that we would schedule another day. He left. I went back in and left a message with Steve letting him know my experience and that I couldn't believe he would send someone out like that to service ANY of his clients. His daughter called me back apologizing and told me Steve would be out first thing Monday morning, as he wasn't in the office. Monday morning rolls around and he is at my house with a worker. I walk up to him, say good morning, and immediately notice a check made out to me sitting on his tailgate. He proceeds to ask me, "are you wanting to continue with this job or should we just part ways?" Umm, are you serious??? Stupid me again... "as long as you don't send anyone else like that out to my house I'd like to continue and get this over with." Steve gave us a written quote in December 2023 and said about 6 months before he could start. After getting several other bids, we decided to hire him to paint the exterior of our 2450 sq ft home, 12 x 40 ft covered patio and a detached 400 sq ft garage. To our surprise, his office called and because of a postponement, they could start our job April 23. We had picked out our colors, and Steve met with us on April 23, the same day the crew started the prep work, covering items with plastic, pressure washing, patching, digging dirt from away from foundation. Two days of prep work and they started masking, covering and protecting non painted items and finished painting most in 1 day. Steve had 5 men, Mark, Johnny, Brandon, Junior and Austin work on the project. It rained on Friday, so Johnny came back and finished 2 roll up garage doors, and a back and side door and their trims. Each and every day, the assigned workers showed up early and Steve communicated what was to be done each day. I am a perfectionist, but he and his crew exceeded my expectations and did a fantastic professional job. After they were done painting, we did a walk through and my wife and I could not detect anything that needed further attention. There's a reason Steve and his team have a solid 5 star rating, I haven't experienced professionalism and workmanship like this in years. I would sit and stare at his team fluidly handle various tasks related to the job and it was very impressive. The price is extremely reasonable and honestly, and after seeing the work done, worth every dollar. Steve himself came over to my house, explained various details and nuances, took his time, and then sent over the quote. He's booked a couple weeks out, but it's worth the wait, because his team literally finished in 2.5 days for an entire house work job. I did notice very tiny things, but I was nitpicking, and Steve had someone from his crew come back and handle it no questions asked. This was after I completely paid him too. You know how many contractors disappear or don't prioritize you after you pay them in full? A ton, but not Steve and his team. I got the same customer service and professionalism before and after payment was made. His team consisted of Marty, Alfredo, Jose, Daniel, and Jesus. All solid gentlemen, everyone wore masks as well, and everyone handled their tasks extremely efficiently. You can trust that the job is in good hands if left to his team, everyone was also incredibly respectful. Overall, I believe the entire work was worth the money. I feel as though I was treated with top priority no matter how small or large the job was.
