I had a "first" visit with Dr. Steven Una for a general checkup. Although he had never seen me before, when he walked into the exam room, instead of saying hello, or introducing himself, he made an insulting "racial" joke about my surname, saying that it looks like they are finally letting people of my ethnic background into the building. Coming from a doctor who I had never seen before, this was shocking and completely out of line on his part. Although I managed to continue with the general checkup, before it was over I told Una that I didn't appreciate his racist joke. He gave me some lame excuse that he had friends who were also of my ethnic background. Hey, Una, I'm not one of your friends, so save your racist jokes for them! And BTW, Una, what is your ethnic background(s) and has your ethnicity ever been discriminated against? If so, you haven't learned much from that. Una needs to take a course in "racial sensitivity", and learn what kind of language is inappropriate when conversing with patients. Of all the years that he's been practicing medicine, you would think that by now, he would greet each new patient with professionalism, courtesy and friendliness. A point to ponder: people who are "insecure" often compensate for that insecurity by trying to put down other people! I said this was my "first" visit with Una. Dr Una was my doctor for quite awhile, until I explained how I went to urgent care while camping, that Dr gave me a very strong shot of antibiotic, for whatever reason my back pain just disappeared, no explanation for it it just was what it was! When I explained it to Dr Una, he slid over to me with his stool, looked at me and said, YOU NEED TO SEE A PSYCH! After being his patient for awhile, I was extremely taken back and have never returned, called my insurance and let them know what happened! I am a senior Citizen in my 60's at the time! I am quite sane!! Never expected that behavior from my doctor! Really sad! I can't get it out of my Mind, it hurts to hear a comment like that out of nowhere! read more

Dr.Una no longer direct admits to the hospital. He also no longer sees his patients if they are admitted to the hospital. On top of that he has cut the days he works to the point care is delayed. I could go on and on about him telling me I had bone cancer in my spine. I then got a pet scan. When I called for the results he was in Hawaii and the office made me wait for his return. During those weeks I contacted the Cancer Institute...thought about where I wanted to be buried and thought about all the things I'd miss. Upon his return hd told me.....cancer free..wtf! Don't take your pet rock to him. He certainly isnt the doctor he was 20 years ago. read more

I saw this man following a serious outbreak of MRSA Staph infection (Resistant Community strain of Staph). He saw me for 15 minutes, belittled my worry about my condition (that had hospitalized me with a 106* fever, and required I.V. Anti-biotics...), and charged me $250 for the visit. He prescribed me 2 of the strongest Anti-biotics on the market, chiding my worry about the side effects, and sending me on my way with a fat bill. When I needed a re-fill for my trip to Thailand, his office said I would have to come in again for another $250 visit... just to refill a prescription for a chronic condition for which I am a carrier. No, this was no a request for pain meds, or something suspicious-- just a refill on anti-biotics. I called 3 weeks in advance, and spoke with his office about 5 times, each time being promised a call-back. When I complained and asked for the doctor to call me, the woman put me on hold, and when she came back, told me that Una would no longer see me-- that I would need a new doctor. I literally got fired from being his patient because I requested that he call me. To make the story better (worse), I found a new doctor who would write me the prescriptions... but when I called and asked Una's office for the name and type of my prescription, they told me it would be a $30 fee because my file was in storage... from a visit I had 5 months ago... pretty sad, eh? Steven R Una, MD - Piece of sh*t - Internal Medicine Near Me - Castro Valley, California

I am the admissions counselor for an assisted living community in the area. We were in need of forms to be signed by Dr. Una for one of his patients. We were told daily by the office staff that the forms would be sent that day. Finally a week later I went into the office to request the forms. The receptionist was rude and belittling when I asked that the Dr be phoned so that I could have a verbal confirmation from him that the forms would be signed. I work daily with doctors and office staff and have never been treated with as much disrespect as I was by Dr. Una's receptionist. I will not be recommending this office to any of the families I work with. read more

I have been going to Dr. Una for over 15 years and he has never let me down. He manages to keep you laughing as he examines you with his sometimes off color jokes. But beside his humor he is also a brillant physician - I have never had any complaints about the quality of care I have received. Despite being a very busy physician he always returns my phone calls and I've never had an issue getting an appointment when I needed one. His office staff can be difficult at times. There have been some administrative changes in his office that were not for the better. But he is such a wonderful doctor that I'm willing to put up with the less than friendly office staff. read more

I have been going to Dr Una for years. He saved my life. I had complications from surgery from which I developed sepsis. He, along with other doctors, treated me right away. Dr. Una Is fantastic. I was referred to him by Eden hospital after contracting hepatitis a. He always greeted me with a smile and an off-color joke. His bedside manner put you at ease and I fully trusted his judgment. I had a rather embarrassing issue come up. And he needed to look in places that I didn't really feel comfortable him looking at. But he talked me through it calmed me down and helped me resolve my issue. His wife worked there and I can't say anything nice about her. She was rude and had zero patience.She often worked at the front office and she was very difficult when trying to obtain refills on medications or getting messages to the doctor. But that was many moons ago and I'm now going back to him to hopefully find the same caring, funny terrific doctor. read more

I love Dr. Una and his staff. The office does not accept my insurance and I still go there. This is the first doctor I have felt like is a partner in my care not the sole decision maker. I have always been treated courteously and respectfully by all I have dealt with there. read more

Loved his staff-everyone was very nice-Dr Una is very sweet and funny and serious and easy to talk to about some times very personal issues. My husband really liked him alot and that to me is a big deal as he really doesn't like Doctors, but he would not hesitate to see Dr Una-such a great find for us. read more
