I can't lie; originally, I chose Dr Van Wicklen as my dentist because it was walking distance from my apartment, and I tend to have frequent dental emergencies. The fact that I'm staying with the practice even after moving a 25 minute drive away speaks volumes. Everyone on staff is so kind, professional, and still personable. It's not a super fun thing to take care of but they always make it as quick and painless as possible. As far as I'm concerned, this team is the best in Austin. Dentist and dental staff are great. Office staff needs training. I scheduled an appointment for me and my wife months in advance for our exam and cleaning. When I called to set the appointment I made it for the same day for me and my wife since we only have 1 car. The week of our appointments they cancelled both of our appointments and scheduled us on separate days in the future. I called back and told them again we need to go together. They told me it be months out in order for them to schedule it that way. Then I received a call back saying that they will forward my information to another dentist if needed. Dr Van Wicklen is an excellent dentist. My primary dentist is in Asheville, NC. I had an infrequent pain in my upper left when I saw them in early fall. I had complications from my wisdom teeth removal months ago and, because I moved to Austin just last month, he and his staff agreed to see me the same day I called for an emergency appointment. I have seen Dr. Van Wicklen and his staff way more often than I would have liked to in the past few years, but that's hardly their fault. It's not rocket science that flossing your teeth prevent cavities and therefore fillings. I just don't do it. They're very kind about it, unlike some dentists I've been to. The hygenists are sweet and careful. All of the staff are very organized, friendly, and helpful, even when you, say, miss an appointment, or forget to bring your insurance information with you. Hypothetically. Re-reading this I'm not sure why they haven't fired me as a patient yet. Does Dr. Van Wicklen consistently bring up Invisalign with me? Of course he does, it would make him some money, and he's running a business. He doesn't bring it up in a rude or hard-sell way and to be honest if the Invisalign fairy brought me enough money to pay for it, I'd do it. But there are a few things like a mortgage in between me and that kind of cosmetic spending. They're internet-savvy which is really nice. His office also recommended a good pediatric dentist when my young child chipped a tooth, so I'll always be grateful to them for that as well. read more

I was Dr. Van Wicklen's patient for 16 years. His practice was a little far from my home, but I drove there anyway (even as traffic grew increasingly worse in Austin). He's a good dentist, but most of my time was spent with the hygienist, R. She was great, but she retired recently. On my last visit, the new hygienist hurt me many times during my cleaning. I brush 2-3 times a day and floss every night, and my dental visits have always been mostly pain free. At the end of my appointment (where I had been grunting and closing my mouth on her hands), she said I should have told her I was sensitive before the appointment. She implied that they could have "given me something" before we got started. What?! Later, the office sent me the standard "tell us what you think" email. I told them everything that happened and never received a response. It's been one year, but I'm still feeling a little traumatized. read more

I have been going to Dr. Van Wicken since 1987. I've lived in Houston for the last 22 years, and I still go to Dr. VW which should tell you something. Rhonda, the dental hygienist, has cleaned my teeth for nearly twenty years, and she shames every other hygienist I've ever seen. I used to require gas to get me through other dental office visits, but at Dr. VW's office, I don't find gas necessary. In addition, the ladies who run the office and support the doctors are friendly as well as professional. Finding good services, etc., in these circumstances, often amounts to a 'hit' or 'miss'; Dr. Van Wicklen and every single one of his staff have proven to be a massive hit! I cannot say enough good things about this practice. My former roommate used to work for Dr. Van Wicklen and I know that he is as good to his employees as he is to his patients; which speaks volumes as far as I'm concerned. I am now a patient of Dr. Van Wicklen after entirely too many years of not seeing a dentist. I know I need a lot of work done, but Dr. V was so honest with me about what was necessary immediately and what I could get away with waiting on. This was so refreshing after having seen another dentist just three weeks prior who told me that if I didn't spend $4000 getting everything done that he recommended, I would likely have to have teeth pulled. I also have a crown on my front tooth which for 12 years has caused major gum inflammation and unsightly discoloration, I have always mentioned this to dentists and they have never acknowledged that it was a problem. They have told me to keep flossing and it should clear up but it has only gotten worse. I think that no one until now has known what the problem was so basically just blew it off. Dr. Van Wicklen was the first dentist to acknowledge the severity of the problem, and set me up for a consultation with his periodontist in order to start the process of fixing it, this was such a relief. The support staff is excellent as well, friendly and knowledgeable every step of the way. The hygienist pretty much knew exactly what the doctor was going to recommend even before he had done his exam, and the girls at the front were super personable and helpful. Dr. Van Wicklen does great work, but could do better at communication. I went in for a routine cleaning and after doing X-rays, etc, my bill was $427. No one informed me of what the extra charges were until I got to check out. The dentist may be painless but the office procedures are not. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Van Wicklen for about two years now. Dr. Van Wicklen is such a cool guy. There are a lot of dentists that tend to be overly aggressive in their treatment plans. Dr. V.W. does quality dentistry and just what is necessary--not doing crowns, etc when not needed. I have been to both the hygienists (Rhonda & Kirsten) and they are awesome as well. They front office staff is very friendly and professional. You can tell it is a good place to work by the attitude of the staff. I recently had a crown done and the best thing is that he has CEREC so the crown can be done same day! That means not having to deal with a temporary crown or having two appts. Best dental experience of my entire life! I needed a crown and a friend told me that there were dentists who had the technology to do it in one day. I was sold, because 1) I want to minimize the amount of time I spend at the dentist so if I could do it in one appointment vs. two I wanted in! And 2) because I didn't want to walk around with a temporary for 2 weeks. I searched "same day crown" and Dr. Van Wicklen came up with great reviews. Dr. Van Wicklen and his staff are fabulous. Like most people, I HATE going to the dentist (could be because every time I go I need a new filling). When I moved here last year I looked for a dentist before a primary care doc or gyno - a good dentist is a rare gem. I did some extensive research and asked the few people I knew for recommendations. A friend sent me to Dr. V. He fixed a recent filling that my dentist in DC screwed up and a second Austin dentist couldn't figure out - the second guy told me the pain was due to stress!!! )(#*$ Also, I've had some dentists in the past that seemed like used car salesmen - they say you need $5,000 worth of work done when all you REALLY need is one filling. Or push you to take your wisdom teeth out when they're cavity-free and not bothering anything. Dr. V doesn't push you to fix things unless they really need to be fixed, and he'll 'watch' potential problem teeth rather than just going in to fill them unnecessarily. The down side is that he doesn't take my insurance, which ends up being quite a bit more. I may give another in-network dentist a try, but I'll certainly be back and pay the premium if they're not up to Dr. V standards. read more

I've been going to Dr. Van Wicklen for years, but recently I took off from work to drive my elderly dad to their office. He needed to have his teeth cleaned, plus a crown had recently fallen off. They didn't try to sell him on a new crown. Instead Dr. Wicklen and staff stayed a little late and glued his original crown back on - saving my dad money, and saving all of us time. Was in Austin from Houston to get away from Hurricane and broke a crown. Dr. Van Wicklen's office arranged for me to come in the following morning at 8 am to work me in. I arrived the next morning, filled out some paperwork, and was seen promptly. They took a quick X-Ray and Dr. Van Wicklen came right in. He was very friendly and professional, reviewed my broken crown, applied a fix, and didn't even charge me. I cannot recommend him highly enough and he would be my first choice if I ever moved to Austin. read more
