Called Steve and was told to bring my car in for a diagnostic, found out it needed a new alternator. That day I received same day service. OMG, I was extremely surprised and happy getting my car back within 2hrs., needless to say, this has never happened to me, especially in an emergency last minute walk in. Steve's a great guy. He took a look at my car and helped me replace my two strut mount assemblies and a lower control arm. When I first took it in to get repaired, I brought my own parts that ended up not being used dude to certain size mishaps on the website I ordered them on. I've been going to Steve's Auto for many years, and I've always had great service here! There is a small waiting room with a tv, so customers can wait for their car. I love that it is nice and warm in the waiting room, especially when it is cold outside in Oakland. I came here to fix my starter, but Steve found other maintenance issues that needed to get fixed. Since Steve is a very trustworthy person, I allowed him to fix them. I am grateful that he noticed my brakes, spark plugs, and battery needed to get replaced. He was able to get my car fixed pretty fast considering all the work that was done. I think its great that Steve didn't overcharge me, too! Steve's Auto is located right next to a huge Dollar Store. There is a Mcdonald's, Jack in the Box, and El Pollo Loco within walking distance if you get hungry. read more

I took a car here from a used car dealer to get a pre-purchase inspection. 10 minutes into inspecting it, the mechanic calls me out to show me a bunch of issues with it. He thinks he car had been in a flood and shows me numerous rust stains, strange places dirt had gotten lodged, and the scratched up underside. A couple minutes later Steve himself comes out and gives the car his own inspection. He pointed out different parts of the car that looked "off" and then told me what the damage to the car consisted of after giving me a chance to guess. After that he said that the car clearly had too much any issues to be worth buying at the price it was being sold it. Then he said that since the issues took just a couple minutes to diagnose, they wouldn't charge me for an inspection. Wonderful service, I loved all the explanations of the issues. First off, I don't write reviews unless I feel like it really warrants it. I've decided to write this review as a warning, also because this place needs to have the "actual" light shine on it. There is just too many positive reviews for this bad place. Awhile ago, I decided to take my car in for a brake job (new brake lines, replace fluid, new brake pads) after reading a lot of positive reviews. I also had new extended studs pressed in. The job they did went accordingly. But how surprise I was when I went to pick up my car at the end of that week. Steve decides to charge me over $400.00 for installation of a new starter without consulting first if I was okay with preceding with the extra work (starter wasn't giving me any problems). How can you do work on a customer's car without first asking for permission?. How do you know if I could have afforded it or wanted it performed? What would have happened if I didn't want to pay the bill entirely? This was a unprofessional business practice and I have never gone back. I have also written to the BBB about this incident. Potential customers beware, every good review of this place can't be legit. Research the BBB website first, it was too late for me. read more

It's difficult finding a good honest car repair center, especially if you are a female in a new city! But thanks to my lucky stars, when I first arrived in Oakland I went into a Kragen Auto Parts store picking up some parts and simply inquired about a decent mechanic in the area. I was referred to check out Steve's auto and I have been going to him for all of him mechanical issues ever since then! Steve's entire staff provides wonderful customer service! They are attentive, accomodating, and very punctual in terms of providing a time of when your car will be ready. Furthermore, they take the time to provide a detailed estimate so you know exactly what is wrong and what you are paying for. They never try to push or encourage anything you don't need! Prices here are slightly a bit higher here than a mechanic down in San Diego, but compared to the other repair shops in the bay area, Steve's is very competitive and fair. If I had to say anything negative about the place, just don't expect a spa like lobby if you're waiting for your ride! read more

I've been going to Steves' for along time now. Its a bit out of the way for me but I'd go there no matter what. The real plus is that you can drop off your car, and Enterprise Car- Rental is located less than 10minutes away. They will pick you up from the car repair. Steves' is a no-frills auto repair, there isn't a lounge, or even a coffee shop near by unless you walk the 4 blocks to fruitvalle BART. But Steves' won't do a repair that you do not need. Good work, in a timely fashion, and really responable prices. read more

We took our Honda Odyssey here when the brakes started squeeking - it turned out the brakes didn't need replacing, but they managed to rack up a $300 figuring that out and making some minor fixes that we didn't ask for. I actually had a decent experience with Steve's auto. They did a alternator replacement on one my cars years ago (maybe 3). I recommended this spot to another friend who needed some basic engine work as well. She too had nothing but good to report back. They were cool, cheap, and did the job I needed to be done. I'd never take take my sports car here but if you have a Honda or something like that, sure why not? Like any other "auto" shop up and down e12th/e14th you need to exercise caution. However my experiences here were good and oh, they didn't drive my car or use up my gas. read more

This review is a long time coming. I've been taking my cars to Steve for maybe 12 years. He works on both American and foreign cars, and kept my 2002 MBZ CLK430 running for over a decade. Two years ago, I gave that Benz to my son, and it still runs great. If I have 1500 miles left on my brakes, he says so. He could've charged me a grip on the spot, but he didn't. He'll shuttle me to work when I don't have a ride too. And, he always calls and gets approval before he performs any additional work. I've been going to Steve's for 3 years and he has done decent service on both my vehicles. Sadly I must say I am changing mechanics due to the recent customer service, I mean NO customer service. I have come in twice in the past two weeks trying to simply drop off my car for repair. The first time he said he was too busy and couldn't get to it until the end of the week. Ok, fine understandable. But the second time he completely ignored me. I took my car in, he took one look at me and asked where my ride was, before i could answer he disappeared. I eventually found him in the office and waited for 5-7 ,minutes to make eye contact, talk to me, anything. NOTHING. I had tried calling a few times to get an appointment but they never answer their phone, nor do they have an answering machine. Im looking for a new mechanic now. read more

I continue to have very positive experiences with Steve and his team. Since my last review in 2008, my 2003 Subaru Outback has had some major work done there. I had the entire engine rebuilt, new clutch, new axle. All the work was done well and more cost effective than going to a manufacturer's repair center. I can't even tell you how grateful I am to Steve (and his hard working shop). I was having the hardest time getting my car smogged. Because of the new Ca standards, my car was passing all of the necessary emmission tests, but wouldn't pass because of an engine light that wouldn't turn off. I literally spent thousands of dollars at another shop trying to get my car to simply pass the smog test. I finally turned to Steve for help. He accepted my car on Monday, and returned to me on Wednesday. He only charged me a few hundred bucks, and my car passed smog later that same day. I own a BMW, but he had just about every other make of vehicle in his yard as well. I highly suggest doing business with these guys! read more

I recently went in for a repair on a failure of the automatically roll down/up passenger side window. After some diagnostics, Steve recommends that I get an OEM-ed window-regulator part instead of an original dealer's part. By following his recommendation, I was able to save more than $150. The service was quick and clean, I went in at 3:30pm and out by 5pm, plus I was able to involve in the repair process and got an deep insight on the mechanics of the motorized windows. It has been working perfectly for more than 6 months now. On 09/23/14 alarm of a blue Cadillac went off around 3AM. Alarm continued to go off until shop was open which was around 7AM when mechanic showed up. Spoke with older Asian mechanic, mid 50's, around 3:30PM and informed him of situation. He told me that he would let the owner of the car know. I told responded with the notion that it doesn't matter if he is notified now, we need to be able to get a hold of someone in the middle of the night if this issue happens again. He said it wouldn't happen again, which is not at all true and no way to predict, nor confirm. A younger Asian mechanic, mid 30's, was listening to the conversation and told me the same thing. He said he'll inform the owner of the car, in hopes that I would agree and walk away. I told him the same thing - we need someone's phone number to call if this happens again. He said he wasn't willing to give it out and that he wasn't going to wake up in the middle of the night to fix the issue as this would bother his sleep. I said how nice it must be to be able to sleep. This is terrible business that you can't help us out. It's not our fault that the alarm went off. We just need someone to call and turn it off because his is Oakland and it will happen again. He refused to give any contact information. He only gave me the owner's name, Steve, which is on the building and his alleged name, Sam. I, along with the rest of the building stayed awake from 3AM until 7AM because they said they couldn't turn it off, because the owner of the car had the key fob (which is ironic due to the fact that the alarm turned off right when they showed up). I am upset that they can't help us out and I think this shows the type of business that they run here so I am making a complaint so that the owner sees this and does something about it. read more
