I stopped here today on my way home from Cazenovia. I was going to eat at one of the picnic tables out back, but the wind picked up and I sensed rain, so I brought my order home. I ordered a half rack of ribs with 2 sides and a bottle of water. I forgot to choose a sauce, so I ended up with regular bbq sauce. I wish I had been asked. I don't really like bbq sauce (I know). I just find it too sweet. This sauce was really tasty! Yes, still too sweet for me, but I gave it a sprinkle of salt and all's well. I had ordered slaw, but I got mac & cheese, which is delicious! Next time I'll definitely order it. Fries were good, but cold when I got home. My fault. I like that they were just plain fries, not the "seasoned" fries that seem so popular in this area. I'll pop them in the oven later. I appreciated the little cup of dessert. I thought it was horseradish (which I love)! No water, but I'm so that's ok. If you are looking for fine chairs --butler service --expensive tables and elegant dining ----well don't!!!!! It's a BBQ place the way it should be. Coming back from cortland my son picked this and it was pure BBQ. Food was cooked great. Meats were tender and juicy and flavorful. The fries -Frankly were awesome. To top it all off --I'm guess Steve and his wife or just a very nice man and woman brought our food to our outdoor tables(no inside seats) and then helped us get all condiments. Take out or limited outside seating only. The food is delicious!!! This is not your typical restaurant. The owners converted a walk-up ice cream shop to a walk-up BBQ take out shop. They smoke the meats on the premises and the area smells amazing. The side dishes are homemade as well. The staff is friendly. The food is delivered to the window in just a few minutes. I'm surprised there are 14 reviews for this place! It certainly hits the spot! The spicy turkey sandwich was utterly delicious, roasted so that the whole thing melts in your mouth. Not the healthiest food in the world, though, so be careful! The cole slaw was fresh, crispy; perhaps too much dressed slathered along the vegetables. The mac and cheese tasted homemade; I could do better on my best days, but if I made this on most mac and cheese expeditions I'd be happy. The collared greens were too salty, but otherwise flavorful (with bacon). The baked beans held their own. Nice roadside place! More of a takeout place; unless you sit outdoors and enjoy the view of the county fairgrounds across the highway. read more

This place is phenomenal and more than reasonably priced. I had the veggie burger with mac n cheese and "salt potatoes". I only put that in quotes because I realized after the fact that's a regional thing. They were exactly that...salt potatoes...and they were delicious. But I have never seen them called that anywhere else before. :) Neat. The Mac n Cheese was okay at best. I'm not sure if that's a regional thing or not, but it wasn't really Mac n Cheese so much as Mac n Flour Paste. Not a whole lotta cheese or...flavor there. But that's okay. Not what I expect out of it, but maybe that's just me. They offer cornbread with each meal ordered with either jalapeno or honey butter. Glad we stopped to try. The bbq brisket is soooo good. Nicely smoked and flavorful. The sauces were awesome -- we couldn't decide which one we liked best. We alternated between the sweeter red sauce and the more vinegary white sauce. We also had chocolate lasagna dessert -- it was delicious -- it had layers of chocolate pudding, whipped cream, Oreo cookie crumble. Will definitely be back to sample the rest of the menu. read more

I have driven by this place a zillion times, so today (Mothers day) folks wanted some BBQ. I thought of this not too far of a drive from home, The menu looks great. Well I didn't expect much and I am glad , the food was ok the service was slow( i get it can't rush good food) But the time it took for our food to come and not to be right kinda upset me but it is what it is I asked and order Pork ribs mac and cheese and salt potatos. What I got was a pulled pork snadwhich a 4oz serving of mac&cheese 3 salt potatos and a 1x1 inch piece of cornbread. all was edibile ONCE,however I will not go back I hope the owner reads this review and makes some changes. read more

The only reason why I'm giving this place two stars is because my stomach did not feel good afterwards. The brisket is way too hard and dry. The ribs were good and the pit steak was also decent. I did like their spicy BBQ sauce. Would I come back here again? Probably not anytime soon. read more

Stopped by on our way thru town since it was midway on our 4 hour drive. Cute little road side take out! Got to see the smoker being tended to, which is ways cool to see. We got ribs, brisket, and a hot dog kids meal that came with a little Hugs juice barrel. Ribs were really great - tender and very meaty. Brisket was not the best I've had - had a little pink around the edges and a little flavor, but a little chewy. In our travels cross state we were hungry and saw an arbys sign... a couple stores down is this bbq place... of course home cooking over fast food any day. Well let me tell you it surpassed any bbq food I've ever had !! My fiancé had the brisket and I had the angry bird WOW WOW WOW also the broccoli slaw we are going to try making at home! A 10! Truly a 10, hard working owner is so sweet and his help too! They gave my dog a nice treat off bbq too! I can't complain about a thing! I feel like this place has potential, the food does seem like it's all scratch made, but a lot of items could definitely use improvement. They have a good selection on the menu, but everything is a la carte, so if you want a meal with sides and bread, you have to remember to order everything separate. Last time I forgot to add cornbread to my order. oops. the prices aren't that bad though compared to other places. It's just a roadside stand with some picnic tables, and since whitney point is like a half hour from my house, it's most likely that I won't really be back, especially since everything I had seemed pretty mediocre. I'll start off on a positive note, the ribs were actually pretty decent. the first time I tried to order them they didn't have any because of a mess up, they weren't ready in time for lunch, so that already kinda soured my opinion on this place, but I was still ready to give them a chance. I went back a 2nd time and got them for dinner and while there wasn't much of a smoke ring, the smoke flavor was still there and done well, a lot of time with stick burners (that's a pit that burns only wood logs, no gas or charcoal, for those of you who don't know haha) the flavor can be bitter, it depends on if you can run a clean fire, and this smoke flavor was good, not overpowering. the ribs could have used a little more time in the smoker though, they were a little on the tough side. I know a good rib is supposed to have a little chew to it but these were too chewy. the spice rub had a nice flavor though. for the most part, things pretty much went downhill from here. brisket- ribs and brisket are what i mainly judge a place by. it's not too hard to make good ribs, but good brisket is tricky, and I was disappointed with the brisket here. Legit bbq brisket is cut into slices about the same thickness as a pencil, and if they bend easily without breaking apart then it's cooked perfectly. if brisket is sliced super thin, then that's just a way to fake tenderness. the brisket here was sliced super thin. it was juicy though, but I could tell it was reheated with beef broth. so pretty much I wasn't getting fresh meat. when you cook the meat and let it cool down and then reheat it with liquid you definitely lose some of the smoke flavor too. I won't be ordering this again. pulled pork- ugh, one of my biggest pet peeves is when a bbq restaurant pre-sauces their pork and lets the meat sit around in it all day. you're taking away flavor from both the meat and the sauce!! the sauce masks the smoke flavor from the meat and the sauce also looses character, and the meat just becomes mushy. the pulled pork tasted like something the average joe could whip up in a crock pot, and it was pretty greasy too. definitely won't be getting this again. the sides- ok so their spicy coleslaw was actually really good, but every other side I had was a letdown. the mac n cheese was a little bland, the "whitney point greens" were too bitter, I didn't really care for the flavor of the baked beans (I suspect there might be a little beer in them), and while the cornbread had a good flavor, it was on the dry side. sauces- I don't really know what the deal with the sauces here is. the first time I came I got a side of sauce that seemed like a gourmet version of a regular dark molasses bbq sauce but with a kick, I thought it was really good actually. the 2nd visit I got a sauce that while still good, wasn't as good as the first one. it didn't seem to have much molasses in it, which I don't mind, it was lighter and had a little tang to it, but it tastes like a few other sauces I've had before. I dunno, if for some god-forsaken reason I lived in whitney point, I could see myself getting ribs from here every so often, but I only ever really stop through town if I'm going to Ithaca, and if I'm going to Ithaca I'd rather have Fat Jack's or Gateway. read more

We stopped here on the way back from Buffalo. I checked yelp while on the road. I saw the reviews were good and I had had bbq from a smoker years ago. As soon as I saw that I knew it would be good. We arrived and it's a small place that's not eat in. They have picnic tables in front and out back but it was too cool , windy to sit outside. That said we ordered the ribs and the sliced turkey sandwich. The sandwich was delicious, turkey was hot, sliced thin, very good. It was a soft bun like a hamburger bun but it was fine and did not fall apart. Ribs had the dry rub and were well done and tasty. We didn't eat it all because we got full. BBQ in NY? It can't be good! WHAT A SURPRISE! I am visiting from Austin TX and was craving BBQ. Steve's BBQ is perfectly smoked with apple wood. His homemade sauce reminds me of Stubb's in TX. The Whitney Point Greens are to die for! The coleslaw, beans, broccoli salad, potato salad, mac n cheese, etc. are made fresh! The ribs, pulled pork, chicken, brisket, and Turkey are moist! Sorry. I know I caught you mid week after lunch, but if it can't be served good, don't serve it. That was some of the worst BBQ I've ever had. To even think you can charge $24 a pound for that brisket might just get you hung back in TX. I cringed when I heard sizzle on the griddle. I knew that brisket was being warmed up on a griddle. Tasted like shoe leather with liquid smoke. I'll pay $25 a pound at Franklin's in Austin, TX or $22 a pound at City Butcher in Springfield, MO, but not for shoe leather.
