I'm hesitant to give this place a 5-star rating if only because it ups the possibility I'll have to wait longer for my next cut but honestly, it's worth it. I've lived in the city for 5 years and searched far and wide for a decent, affordable haircut. From snooty salons in Brooklyn to $9 Russian barber cuts in the E Village and everything in between, I settled on Steve's after reading about them in TimeOut NY-- thank goodness I stopped in. I'm not from the neighborhood but have been here 3 times and each time I've been given a fantastic, attentive haircut. I vote for the all-scissor-- both Steve and Champ are incredibly thorough and really take their time, no matter how crowded it might be. After moving to the neighborhood a few years ago, I started looking for a new barber and there was no shortage of options in Hell's Kitchen. None of the barbers I tried gave me that comfortable happy feeling until I tried Steve. He's been cutting hair for over 20 years, and he lives around the corner so the shop is always open, even if the trains aren't running or during snowstorms. Last year, he almost lost me as a customer after he started working alone for reasons beyond his control. Waits for a haircut were routinely a couple of hours during busy times, so I would literally stand outside his shop 15 minutes before opening time so I could be the first customer. However, another Barber Shop closed, and now Basilio and Mario work with him, so there's hardly ever a wait. I haven't tried Mario yet, although he seems to have a following too, but I'm extremely happy with my haircuts from Steve and Basilio. And you really can't beat a $20 haircut in Manhattan. read more

I was greeted with a hello and a handshake when I sat down. That's a great way to start friendship and/or a business meeting. My hair cut was the best so far in manhattan (6th) and it was at a very reasonable price. My time in the barber chair went fast with some friendly conversation. The shop was clean and tidy. The tv was not on but the radio played songs from a hit station so the time passed by quickly. I recommend Steve to any one looking for a men's hair cut in the area. I will return happily. read more

Steve is as good as they come. Talented and meticulous, he has the skill to produce a fantastic haircut with minimal guidance. I would wait an hour and pay a hundred bucks for a pair of scissors between his hands and my hair. The problem is Steve isn't the only person at this establishment. I have had a haircut by someone other than Steve twice, and both times spent weeks of grimacing every time I caught myself in the mirror. At a salon with multiple barbers and a decent backlog, or at one which takes reservations, it isn't awkward to ask for your preferred barber. Neither are always the case at Steve's. Steve's Editing Barber Shop is a fine place if you can be sure you will get your hair cut by Steve. But if you pass by the window and there is anybody but him standing, keep walking. read more

So i usually rely on yelp reviews but didn't have an account to make my own. My experience here made me feel that I had to actually set up an account just so that others could see my review. I initially found out about this place through googling where I could get a good hot towel shave (there is that Time Out piece) and through seeing the reviews here. Most, around 80-90% appeared to be 4/5 or 5/5 so I gave this a shot. I went there once and there was a younger Puerto Rican guy who ended up giving me the BEST hot towel shave, beard shape up and side trims I have ever had in my life. I thought - fantastic, I have found my place to go - no more looking. I was new to the City after all. I had an upcoming interview and thought I would get the same fix up I did last time. I went the night before so that any soreness could have the night to recover. When I went in it was only Steve working - the other guy no longer worked there. I thought I would go with Steve since it was his shop and there were good reviews about him. I waited whilst four guys ahead of me were being dealt with. The guy ahead of me asked for his sides to be shortened but blended it with his top - by the time Steve was done he had no sides, no blending whatsoever. The back of his neck was totally red. He didn't look too happy. What're you gonna do right? I kinda felt bad for him. My turn came up and I knew I should have just left. My beard gets totally reshaped and made thin which is not what I asked for. My sideburns then get made super thin and unequal. I have about 30-40% less beard in terms of face coverage than I intended and instructed. He used his electric clippers on the zero setting all over the unshaven part of my face. Writing now, I have a bag of frozen peas trying to get these thick red tram lines off my face ahead of my meeting. I have never had someone do that. The 'hot towel' shave was literally a 'wet towel' shave. And he was playing some action movie on his TV SOOO LOUD that not only was it a totally unrelaxing experience but Steve couldn't even hear me half the time I spoke. If all you want is a military cut hair style done purely with an electric clipper then I suppose Steve is your guy. But anything else.... hope my review helps. Update - its now more than a complete 24 hours more than I have had my shave and my skin is still super sore, I still have the red lines all over my my moustache area and face. Totally not cool. I have lived across the US and world and this has never happened to me. read more

Do NOT go here! Steve has cut my hair at least 10 times and I was very pleased most of those times. NOT today... He cut off ALL my hair even after I was very clear about the length I wanted. Went in cause of the good reviews however wait was extremely long and there was only one person in front of me. Explained exactly what I wanted and he repeated it to me. Then he proceeded to cut all the hair off the sides of my head. No fade which we talked about. Not at all happy but what else can you do? The hair is gone. It's hats till it grows in. I have scoured the internet for a skilled barber in Manhattan that does not overcharge for a classic scissor cut. After three years living in the city and countless hacked cuts later I almost gave up on Manhattan. I have finally found a real barber. I had a long mop of hair when I walked in.
