Steve's Tavern is one of the best bars on Central. The prices are right and the bar is cool and dark. A welcome break from the intense Florida sun. There is a very nice mural on the wall if you would like to see some art other than Salvador Dali.

This is such a cool CASH ONLY dive bar. Large bar area with a pool table and two dart boards. We love coming here before and after a Rays game. I almost don't want too many people knowing about it because it's not as packed as all the other bars. The bar tenders are super nice and quick to get you what you want. One more thing, the pours here are heavy and well worth the money. LOVE this place! Oh, and if you're sensitive to cigarette smoke, this won't be your kind of place.

Steve's Tavern is it. The perfect dive bar. Literally nothing fancy here... no food, one pool table, good tunes, one long bar. Feel free to bring your own food from any of the neighboring restaurants. Parking is available in the front on Central Ave, or in the alley in back. PLUS, they're dog-friendly, since they don't serve food! Cheap beer & cheap cocktails... perfect!

Drinks are unbelievably weak. Servers are so rude. Too mainstream for my taste. Tourist trap. Megan was the WORST!

Favorite downtown Saint Petersburg dive bar. Erin and Michael make a great team. Cash only, good prices and a jukebox.

The Pelican embodies a classic "comes-as-you-are" vibe in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg where you can go for beers and drinks without much fuss, pomp, or circumstance. We had walked three blocks from our hotel to the Jannus, where the gates hadn't opened yet for the War on Drugs concert. Walking across the street towards that entrance, I noticed a sign for the Pelican Pub hanging over a door right next to it. Knowing that drinks at any concert venue are expensive, I led my wife into the Pelican to grab some pre-concert beverages. The Pelican is a great dive bar with a small L-shaped counter and a few high-top tables scattered across the main area. A handful of flat-screen TVs hang on the halls around the bar where you can watch whatever sports game or show is being broadcasted, with a jukebox. in the back left corner. The ceiling above the bar is littered with dollar bills. The walls were covered with scribbles from patrons throughout the years -- people's names, nicknames, team chants, and other drunken mutterings. All of this gives the bar its character. We knocked back Jameson and Ginger Ales at $6 a pop for about 30 minutes or so before moving on to the Jannus for the show. But the Pelican is a fun spot for your first stop of the night, pre-game for a show, or if you're looking for a stop to enjoy some drinks with some friends.

Fair warning though, it mysteriously…read moreshrinks after a few washes (or maybe the food here is just that good at making my waistline expand? The jury is still out). I genuinely like this place, but my latest visit was a gentle reminder that even the greats have their off nights. We grabbed a spot on the outdoor patio, which is great because there are tons of TVs playing sports to keep you entertained. And you're going to need that entertainment, because the vibe this particular evening was heavily operating on "island time." I started to wonder if our server had to physically row to an island to get our order. It was a very long wait just to be acknowledged, and an even longer wait for drinks. Funniest part? My beer arrived well before my water. I was incredibly parched, and while I appreciate a cold brew, I didn't exactly want to shotgun my beer just to survive the drought. The tap water finally made its grand, triumphant entrance a solid 20 minutes after we sat down. When it came time to order, we met the Upcharge Enthusiast. Here's the deal: burgers come with rice and beans by default. If you want Bob's fries, that's a $2 upcharge. I tried to shoot for the stars and upgrade to onion rings. The response? A firm, almost offended no. "Those are an appetizer," I was informed. Honestly, our server seemed to derive a bizarre, villainous amount of joy from telling me things were an upcharge. Hey, whatever brings you happiness, just take my two dollars and make the fries happen. After the drinks took a serious scenic route, the food came blazingly fast out of the kitchen, but when it finally arrived...wow. The burgers here are absolute behemoths. You literally have to unhinge your jaw like an anaconda to take a bite. I have to admit, they are undeniably amazing. One bite almost makes you forget you spent the first half of the evening contemplating drinking water out of a patio planter. Pro-tip: Bring paper money! They give you a nice little discount if you pay in cash. Overall, I still really like this joint. Every restaurant is allowed to have a rough service night every now and then, and this just happened to be one of them. I'll definitely be back although I just might pre-hydrate in the parking lot next time.
