I reviewed this already but it doesn't seem to be there anymore... Typical double talk, upselling, promises that "this will fix it," textbook example of the problems people have with many repair shops. That guy Jon at the East Memphis location is a 100% double talker. We agreed what to do, then they decided to go rogue and do something else, then want 2x as much. I said no. Paid less with the promise it was corrected, then the problem not only came back the next day, but it's much worse. I don't know what they did to it, but now it has 25+ error codes after they cut the wiring harness open to the transmission module (then later said it didn't need that, as I originally tried to tell them). Whatever you say, it goes in one ear and out the other. When I called back that it still wasn't fixed (after a promise it was definitely all good now), there it started... The old mechanic-shop screw. "Well the next step is more diagnosis at $150 an hour, and we estimate 3 hours..." (just to find the problem, not fix it), when the diagnosis it what I paid for in the first place. They keep throwing parts and the runaround at both it and you for as long as you'll keep handing them money. Car was at least drivable with the problem before, now it is not. Doesn't even run anymore. To make matters worse, I brought it there because I already knew the owner Stave Woodard from a few years back. I did good, honest electrical and welding work at his previous home in Bartlett. -It was him that said they would need another $450+ after it wasn't fixed. I'm out $315, but glad it wasn't the $650 they wanted at first. Money down the drain, plus a car that's now a boat anchor. So if you take your car to them after reading this, please come back to this review and read it again. I tried to tell you. read more

I cannot recommend Steve's Tire and Auto enough. I have had them do some work on my 2013 Hyundai Tucson a coupe of times over the past few years and they have always done a great job and their pricing is extremely fair. A couple of weeks ago a local dealership told me I needed $1,300 of brake work done. I took my car to Steve's for a second opinion. Turns out the dealership misled me. I did not need any work done to my brakes. Steve's showed me pictures and went into great detail about why the brakes still had plenty of life in them. They saved me $1,300! I cannot thank them enough. It is so nice to know there are still honest folks. They did not charge me at all to look at my car! I expected to at least have to pay a diagnostic fee! Thank you! BEWARE of STEVE'S.                 AUTO!!! $$$$ For 3 months Steve's Tire & Auto tried to repair my car.  Occasionally it would not start. They did numerous things they said it needed & charged me $3375.00 & said yep this should do it. My car intermittently still would not start. Two other people said I needed a starter. The first thing I said to Steve's was check the starter. Steve's said 2 times we checked the starter & it's fine. During the 3 months I was stranded several times because my car wouldn't start. I had to leave it on a Memphis city street & walk home hoping my windows wouldn't be shattered, or myself attacked. I spent money on ubers & missed appointments. Paid for ubers until I couldn't. A different individual put a starter on my car & it's been fine since March. Steve Woodard owner of the place is refusing to refund any of my money. He offered me $500 in credit to this place that couldn't find the problem! Well Steve as I told you on the phone 2 people knew it was the starter when they hit on the right side of it & loosened the part of the starter that tends to freeze up. I wasted 3 months of my life for your Tech to figure it out who obviously hasn't had as much experience with cars as my Heat & Air guy & a truck driver.The lady at the BBB thought that was pretty funny too! SHAME ON YOU STEVE WOODARDI! I'm a woman & a senior & without a doubt your guys thought just get the old lady in & out. Now you don't think it is necessary to do the right thing! They did NOT fix the problem I asked them to address! The last time I was stranded I called them,  James answered. I asked "what should I do now? I've been taking my car to Steve's for almost 6 years now and they've been nothing but kind and professional. I've taken my car for a whole host of issues and it's never been longer than 4 days in the shop. Just recently I took it because my check engine light was on. I took it in at 7:30, right when they open. They had called me by 10 to tell me the diagnosis and it was ready to pick up by 2 the SAME DAY. I know this isn't the case with every car problem, but to compare, the Chevy dealership told me it'd take 3-5 days just to LOOK at it. The price they charged me was fair based on the word of my dad who is a mechanic. And, what's more, when waiting in line, the person in front of me was incredibly rude, and the person at the front desk maintained calm and kindness. Now that is quite the task! I went to this place because it was nearby and a hair cheaper than the scumbag dealerships. It was still $361 for my transmission fluid change, and my transmission isn't even flushed, it's just a drain/refill procedure. I wasn't going to attempt this at home without a level shop and ensuring I had a precise amount. I'm writing this because the transmission fluid itself was listed at a whopping $130 on the receipt. Four quarts of this ATF Toyota fluid is $61.66 on Amazon currently. There is no conceivable rationalization these people could have for this, other than to prey on people. Maybe they're using fluid that's twice good as the OEM Toyota fluid? No. It costs them twice as much to acquire? No. I would at least be willing to bet they did the job properly, but when you put your B.S. overcharges on front street for anyone to see, it's easy to justify not returning. They must legally have to display their prices like that, because that's the typical measuring stick for business, to do whatever they can get away with as long as the law isn't a threat. $32 to patch my tire also, I agreed to it this one time because I was already there, and didn't want to go out of my way to anyone else and wait possibly 2 plus hours just for that. read more

Steve's Midtown Memphis team serviced the used Prius we bought from our neighbor. Great job and excellent value. In the last 2 weeks, I had one tire on my Porsche leaking air. They fixed it for $32. Yesterday the Prius had a flat. Had the tow truck recommendation from Steve's team. Great service arrived at 7:30 AM as promised. This time I had to get a new tire. I needed 4 tires and thought I would try Steve's Auto and tires, I live near by and pass their store all the time. I went by Saturday the 6th to see if they had the tires or could we order them. They are CLOSED on Saturday's. My fault I should've looked first. Tuesday I called looking for pricing and I believe I spoke with David. I gave him my tire size and said I was looking for a price of about 68-75 dollars a tire and he said WE HAVEN'T SEEN 68 dollar tires in years!! I said okay what do you have he said I can get you 4 tires mounted and balance for 658.50 dollars! I know he wasn't being honest because I've seen tires all day on line for 68 to 70 dollars. I told him I'd have to think about it. I turned around and called Discount Tire on Hacks Cross rd. and he that guy said I've got a building full of tires at that cost. So I drove over and waited about 30 minutes and got 4 good tires mounted and balanced for $ 412.01 dollars!! That's 242.61 dollars cheaper than Steve's Auto and Tires on Popular. Now I've read some good reviews about Steve's mostly about how nice customers were treated by the Gal that works behind the counter. Not so much about the work. I got no pleasure writing my review about Steve's Auto and Tires on Poplar, I wanted to do business with them, I live close by, pass their store almost every day going and coming home but I felt like they were trying to cheat me and tell me lies about tire prices. I called here on Thursday asking if any appointments were available for Saturday morning, and was told to come in Saturday at 8am and they should have time for me. I come in at 8:20am, admittedly a little late, and the older guy at the front desk asked me what was the problem. I told him "I have a check engine light on" and he immediately tells me that they're too busy to look at it and to go try the other location in East Memphis the next Monday. Then said there is no guarantee they'll look at it even if I did manage to get an appointment set up. Honestly he was completely useless and waste of my time. No option for me to leave my car overnight or anything, just a simple "go somewhere else and good luck" I went to the Goodyear down the street and the guy tells me he will get it fixed that same day, even with a lobby full of people waiting at 8:30am and a full lot of cars ahead of me. Then he asks me the problem, and realizes it might not be a big issue and comes outside to check on my car right away. Turns out it was just a quick 5 minute wiring fix in my car. I was in and out in 10 minutes at Goodyear, and the guy at Steve's Auto couldn't even get up from his desk. Maybe he could tell I was new in town and figured my problem wasn't as important as his regular customers, I don't know but I felt like I was imposing. Maybe the other employees here are more accommodating, but that guy working the front desk was enough for me to give this place hard pass, and I won't be coming here again. read more

I brought my 2003 Mazda Protege LX in on Saturday, January 9, 2021 in the afternoon to your Poplar Avenue location in midtown. I paid to have the water pump and serpentine timing belt replaced. I specifically told Vic that the belt was squealing/whining. You charged me for installing a new serpentine belt. Well, the belt is squealing/whining now louder and more often than it was before to begin with. It's gotten worse. You must've forgotten to check the drive belt tensioner, not properly aligned the belt, or not properly aligned the idler pulley. In any case I am giving you the opportunity to fix it and make it right. You need to come pick my car up at my home and take it to your shop and get it right! I will not drive my vehicle that you did not properly repair. This is negligence on your part. read more

Very smooth transaction! I brought my pos truck in for repairs. I totally figured it was going to fall into two pieces. Turns out I just needed tires and brakes on the decrepit pile of crap. Who would have known an oil change, 4 tires, front brakes with "turnt" rotors could make a difference, a ($1008.96) difference. It rides all kinds of smooth now. Been to Steve's midtown location a few times now, for general maintenance (i.e., oil change, tires, brakes, etc.) and will defintely return again! I initially decided to try Steve's because they allow you to bring your own parts unlike a lot of the bigger chain shops like Firestone, who will often only work with parts they supply. I have no complaints with any of the work they've done for me thus far! Staff is very friendly and helpful, work has always been completely in a timely manner, and price quotes have been fair. As a matter of fact, when I asked them to price quote a pair of tires they were originally a little more than the quote I received from Firestone; however, they happily matched the lower price. I definitely recommend Steve's if you're looking for quality service and a more personal customer-service experience! read more

I called Steve's Tire and Auto Midtown to ask about have my car diagnosed. I was told it was first come first served and they open at 7:30. It would be $140 and change but if I fixed whatever was wrong with them, that fee would be waved. I thought that was pretty cool they do that. I was literally there at 7:21 and the first person in line and at check in, the guy said "Ok we will call in a little bit." I called at 2:00pm as I hadn't heard anything and was thinking my car was really messed up. Makenzie (sp) answered and said that they hadn't even looked at it yet. It's literally been there for 7 hours and nobody has looked at it? She said well it's first come first served. I responded with the time of my arrival and that I was literally the first person in the door. She then said well we are still catching up from the weekend. This would have been nice to know when I dropped it off. Now that I've wasted almost an entire day waiting for my car I'm taking it somewhere else. When I got there to get it, the three cars that pulled in after me were already gone. No apology, nothing. Terrible customer service. Went in to have a slow tire leaked plugged. They said they don't plug only patched tires. Dropped it off for 2 hrs then picked up. Next day checked tire and it lost air. I did a soapy water check on the tire puncture area, still leaking! Took it back in and was told patch must not have held and I need a new tire! Scam!! Once again, Steve's Tire & Auto impresses with outstanding customer service coupled with integrity. I've been having problems with my car since I got it in February. I took it to Steve's to see what they could find since the dealership couldn't find anything. The outstanding mechanics at Steve's found the issue very fast and referred me to the dealership with a known issue the dealership should have seen in February. I was expecting to pay at least $100 for the diagnostic fee, but when I asked what the total is I was told, "Debbie, I couldn't fix it so I'm not going to charge you." Rolled in there today to get my drivers side rear tire repaired. It was slowly losing air. Guy asked if I could drop it off b/c it's gone be a couple of hours so I got an Uber home. As soon as I got home he calls. I live 5 minutes away so Uber was a waste of money but anyway. The guy tells me the nail is in the front right side and I need a new tire like $200 plus. He said nothing was found in the rear tire. I just got all new tires this year and they didn't have the exact matching one available and something didn't sound right so I declined to buy a tire. They were nice enough and didn't charge me but totally off on diagnosing the problem and almost cost me couple hundred dollars. Went right down the street to Davis Auto Service. The nail in the right front hadn't even punctured the tire so he pulled it out no charge b/c no damage. The drivers side rear had a nail and he repaired it . The total charge $15. Thankfully, I had enough sense to take it down the street. Definitely not going back to Steve's. First and last time . read more

Astronomically overpriced labor. They saw I was from out of state and a student-athlete at the University of Memphis and knew it was an opportunity to take advantage. Extremely bad communication with me. I found three other shops that would charge half the price of what they charged me, but they already started beginning work on the car. Do your research on how long it takes a certified mechanic to fix parts because I do not understand how it takes over 5 hours to replace a radiator. I knew it was going to be a nightmare when I first took my car in and while I was waiting a customer was very unhappy and upset with the price he had to pay. The guy working behind the desk says our business does not take advantage of our customers. As I have experienced first hand that is straight lie. THIS PLACE IS A GRIEVOUS BUSINESS. Courteous, efficient and reasonably priced. I recently called about an air conditioning issue with my car. They told me to come on in. It was packed when I arrived but they said they would get to it in an hour or so. There was a diagnostic fee of just over $100 which would be waived if repair was needed. They called an hour and a half later and had it fixed. The cost was $63 so the diagnostic fee was waived. I highly recommend the great professionals at Steve's. read more

It kills me to read "excellent service and honest." I paid good money to have these guys wreck my truck. They accidentally broke the dash and odometer, replaced it with one that doesn't quite fit and an odometer that doesn't read the correct mileage, they "repaired" a tail light with a wad of duct tape to stabilize a short in the wire! I found this out when i took the truck through inspection and had to correct the problem, AGAIN. I can't imagine how they can be comfortable sending anyone out the door with that "work." And it has never been made right - maybe they are great if you have a new car, but don't take an older model here. read more

I'm in the process of selling my truck, and of course I came out the other morning to tidy it up before showing it to a prospective buyer and it had a flat tire. I don't mean drive-it-to-the-nearest-air-hose flat - I mean flat. On top of that, all of the wheels have locking lug nuts and I had no idea where the key was. In a rush, I called around, but our regular garage doesn't do tire work, so I called Steve's. They said the locking lug nuts wouldn't be a problem, and that they had several different tires in stock that I could choose from. I used a bicycle pump to put just enough air in the tire to get me to them, and sure enough - just a few hours later, they called to let me know that they'd replaced the tire and all four locking lug nuts. The bill was far less than what I thought it would be. On top of that, the staff was extremely friendly and helpful both on the phone and in person. The lobby area was remarkably clean and the entire place felt very professional. I'm glad to know that they're there. read more

I highly recommend Steve's, Have been using them for years and they have worked on several different vehicles of mine. They have always been fair and gone above and beyond on a couple of old vehicles that had unusual and difficult problems. If they couldn't fix the problem ( only happened once, unknowingly bought a flood damaged vehicle with severe electrical problems) they didn't charge me. I do a lot of my own work on my cars but if I have an issue that I cant address, I trust them completely to take care of the problem and charge me a fair price. read more

These guys seem so honest and they're not out to take you. I have a '92 Lexus ES300. I know it has a very slow A/C leak somewhere in the system. A previous shop injected the dye into the Freon. Anyway, I brought the car in at around 11 AM on a Tuesday morning, and left it with them until that afternoon and they said there's nothing that they can find at the moment. There was NO billing charges! And, they gave me a courtesy ride to and from the Midtown home I reside in when I'm Memphis for my job. I highly recommend them and I will be back if I need any work done on this or any vehicle. They are not the rip off that the dealerships can be!
