UPDATE: Yesterday, I finally received an acknowledgment of my parking request to discontinue the surface lot space. 41 days after my initial email to management. Also, the management company appears to have replaced the manager. The email indicated that the new manager would be here even less often than the previous. My previous rating remains, as does my advice to skip this place. However, it is only fair to acknowledge the eventual response to my request, and to note that maybe it'll change in the future given the changes. read more

I recently moved out of this property. While living there, it was just fine. Other than nickel and diming tenants at every opportunity (no it is not the tenant's responsibility to pay for a new filter on the refrigerator), the building was decent. It looked nice, even if the finishes were not high quality. Once I moved out, it was another story. I moved most of my items out of my unit a few weeks before the end of my lease. I was then asked by management if I would turn over possession a week before my lease ended in exchange for a credit of $350. I, of course, agreed. On the agreed date, I did a walk through with the building manager, Jill, and we both signed off that there was no damage, I turned over my keys (building, unit, and parking lot gate) and was told I would receive my refund for the last week of the month within 30 days. Apparently Jill decided later that she could ignore that agreement and charge me for normal wear and tear. Once I received my check, something was clearly wrong. My check was for only $72 and change - well under the $350 promised. There were no receipts nor any other explanation for why my refund was not the full amount. After attempting to figure out what was going on, I was told "Morningside does not own [my former building] anymore" as if that meant Morningside did not have to pay its debts. (I later found out a few days after I received my check, Morningside sold my former building to another company) I continued to try to get ahold of anyone via email and via phone with next to no response. I finally received a call back from Janie , the director of property management. She explained the deductions were for (1) utilities, which are billed in arrears and (2) nail holes and painting in the unit after I left. I was previously unaware of the utilities, but that makes sense. However, there were still issues. First, the utilities were for 31 days, when I was only in possession of the unit for 26 days of the month so that needed to be corrected and second, the nail holes and painting are normal wear and tear and in accordance with the Chicago RLTO, cannot be deducted from pre-paid rent. Further there were no receipts sent along with my refund, which is another violation of the RLTO. While Janie did not agree with me, she informed me, "as a show of good faith" Morningside would refund me the amount of the nail hole and painting repair and the five days of utilities. Until the next day when she reneged on our agreement and proceeded to tell me she would only be refunding me for the nail holes and painting. I am still waiting for a response to my inquiry about why she is attempting to break our agreement. read more

Pros: - great building and nice designs - in unit washer/dryer - huge windows and high ceilings Cons: - shady neighborhood with gangs operating right next corner, you do not want to walk here after hours - a huge amount of homeless people next to the train station - very overpriced - be ready to pay at least 2400$ for 1 bedroom - the small font on the agreement mentions that ALL UTILITIES to be paid by tenant - sewage, water, garbage fees, etc - no gym, no pool, tiny rooftop available for 64 units - parking is extra 150$ for outside lot and 250$ for inside Finally, there is a reason why a school stopped functioning in this neighborhood. My only question is how they formed such luxury rent prices when you can live in Chicago downtown at the same rate? read more

I was looking for a place Uptown and I found that beautiful building that used to be an old school that was remodeled into luxurious condos. I had the chance to have a look at the building outside and inside and I was already very happy about it. I didn't get the chance to visit the place but I had the chance to meet Judy who was extremely attentive and responding. She sent me a couple pictures and made my application process very smooth. Having lived in an Uptown high-rise since 2012, my boyfriend and I went through several cycles of attempting to find a spacious, well-lit apartment with modern appliances that was also dog friendly and had garage parking, followed by giving up and renewing our lease for an apartment we REALLY disliked. This year, I guess the stars aligned because we discovered SSL shortly after we decided "enough is enough". We love our unit's original hardwood floor and exposed brick, the shockingly high ceilings and balcony. In addition to the beauty of the building and the uniqueness of each unit (blending original detail with modern features), the staff--Judy, our property manager, and Pedro, our maintenance technician--are always very helpful! AND Judy throws awesome resident events that garner a community spirit despite there being so few souls in a building that at one point held 1300 students! Plus, the roof top deck is a great place to relax in the warmer months, with a view of some of Chicago's iconic buildings 6 miles south. I've read a great deal of complaints about this building being turned into "luxury apartments", but I don't think there were too many alternatives given the cost of restoring and maintaining it. The developers really did a wonderful job. Also, one thing to note is that, while the location is super convenient (next to Target, 2 grocery stores, the Wilson Red Line, a couple blocks from the lake), there is not an insignificant amount of gang-related crime in the neighborhood. This activity (so I hear) has been improving, but it's something worth mentioning for those who are unfamiliar with the area. read more

I love my awesome new loft apartment with tall windows and very high ceilings, and covered parking is available here which I really wanted when I moved to Chicago. The developer did a really good job with the conversion - great interior finishes and appliances. The building is just the right size, not too many units but also large enough to be fun. The building is built like a rock, so its very quiet! Best part..the amazing property management and maintenance. Judy and Pedro are so responsive to any concerns...and they host great resident parties! read more

I Am so happy to be living in Stewart School Lofts. What an amazing staff and building! I love love love my huge 1600 sq foot unit. It's spacious and everything has been perfect since my move-in in mid feb. The spacious floor plans at SSL will Beat any of those other new places you might be Looking at. You'll pay more rent for a much smaller place. I promise you. I am very happy living at SSL and you will be more than pleased too!! Uptown is up and coming!!!! Love the area and I feel very safe living here!! I hope to stay here longer than my lease!! Pedro and Judy are just so awesome. METICULOUS!!! Just like me. And that's what I love about this building and management company. No one will care for you as much as they do!!! read more

We have been living in Stewart School Lofts for going on 5 months now and have loved every minute of it! By far, the best living space I've found in Chicago! Not only is the building unique, but the Lofts/Units are incredibly beautiful, spacious and each includes its own unique original architecture from its days as a school! It gets even better with the affordable/secured parking options, the all-around pet friendly environment and the planned events so you can get to know your neighbors! The building is located in a great neighborhood walking distance to the lake with tons of nearby amenities including the L, bars, restaurants, shopping, etc. The neighbors and onsite staff (Judy and Pedro) are absolutely wonderful and have been a joy to get to know! They are caring and flexible no matter what the need is. You can also always count on the building and the grounds being clean and well maintained at all times. We couldn't have picked a better home for our family! :) read more

I was one of the first to move in and I still love it here several months later! The building is beautiful, the staff is amazing and my studio is perfect! Maintenance is quick if there ever is a problem. Judy is so attentive, open and neighborly. I feel like I can go to her with any questions I have. The design and features in the units are flawless. We LOVE living at SSL! I instantly fell in love with the building and the apartments during our first tour - every unit we saw was beautiful, open, and so unique (and dog friendly!) Also the building management and maintenance is absolutely amazing - Judy and Pedro have been nothing but wonderful, welcoming, and responsive. After living in River North and Lincoln Park, I was not sure what to expect with Uptown, but I cannot say enough great things about the location. I love living next to an AMAZING Target, CorePower, the Wilson el stop, Montrose dog beach, a ton of green space, and the proximity to LSD (and my boyfriend loves living right by a McDonalds and Duncan Donuts). I would 100% recommend this building to anyone, and I am so happy we signed a long lease here! read more

Scheduled a unit showing with the Stewart School Lofts leasing office for 10 am on Friday, June 17. 2 hours before our 10 am showing we received a confirmation stating that the leasing office was ready to show us the unit. Upon arrival, we noticed the sign outside the door stated that the leasing office doesn't open until 11 am on Friday. After double checking that we received a confirmation for a 10 am showing, we continued waiting out front for someone to answer the door. After ~5 minutes the door opened. We walked down the stairs to the leasing office to be greeted by yet another locked door with the lights off. While standing at the door we called the number displayed in the leasing office window to see where our representative was. Only AFTER being at the door, speaking on the phone with an employee of the leasing office, and then texting back the number that had confirmed the appointment were we informed that the unit was not available and the leasing office was not open. They also attempted to pass off any blame. If this is the experience given to possible future tenants, I'm glad we didn't have an opportunity to mess up and sign a lease here. read more

Beautiful building with unique loft-style residences featuring high ceilings, tons of natural light, brand new stainless steel appliances, exposed brick, and in-unit washer/dryer. Very convenient location in Uptown across from the newly renovated Wilson red line stop. Nice amenities - parking garage and lot, shared rooftop space, secured entry, and bike room. Developers did a great job of maintaining this historic building and refreshing Uptown. Highly recommend checking it out. read more

I've seen this community changed over the years. I had the opportunity to watch Target, BMO and the Wilson "L" stop reform this community. Then Stewart School Lofts, was absolutely a must see!!! The leasing manager Judy, who just a great person, always with a smile showed my family and I around and I fell in love with this beautiful building. At that point, I knew I had to be here. The high ceilings, all new appliances with high end finishes, roof-top view of Chicago skyline and Each apartment is unique. Especially, across from our building is the city's gardening boxes. We love living here! Unique interiors that pay homage to the history of the building with a brand new finish gives us the best of both worlds! The developer made great choices in the style of the kitchen and bathrooms. This is our first time living in new construction so we were pretty excited and so far it has not disappointed. With each unit being so unique it was hard to settle on our favorite. So far the building maintenance and upkeep is immaculate. My partner and I have recently moved in and have been looking forward to it since we first toured with the property manager, Judy. We fell in love with the building immediately, and now that we are able to call the Stewart School Lofts "home," we couldn't be happier. Management and maintenance have been extremely helpful, efficient, and accommodating every step of the way. This building has so much character and history which has been brilliantly preserved and respected in the transition from schoolhouse to apartments. It's clear that the developers of this project knew what they were doing and did a beautiful job in their execution. We look forward to meeting more of our neighbors, as the ones we have meet so far have been wonderful. We also look forward to future events here, as Judy does a 10/10 job at hosting them. Her professionalism, positive attitude and knowledge of the property was impressive. We were invited to a resident event prior to our move as Judy wanted us to feel included. Me and my fiancée moved in to SSL in mid-February. Over our first month and a half, we have had the best realty experience we've ever had. Judy made our move seamless and did all she could to accommodate us and make us feel welcomed. The apartments are truly breathtaking, with huge ceilings and unique decorative hints that point to the building's history. All of our guests have been blown away (as we were) when entering the building at the uniqueness of the school to apartment transformation. The cleanliness of the building, the staff I've encountered in the hallways, and the wonderful neighbors I've met have made our first weeks at our new home a first-rate experience. We moved into Stewart School Lofts in September and absolutely love it! The developers did a great job maintaining the historic architectural features of the school building, while adding high end modern appliances and amenities. Each unit is unique and has some type of "wow" factor, the location is extremely convenient (across the street from a Target, Aldi and red line train stop) and the building manager Judy has been wonderful to work with and quick to respond to any of our questions or work orders. We looked at buildings in other neighborhoods that had similar features (new construction, medium rise, dog friendly, outdoor space and near a train stop), and found that we could get a unit that was literally twice the size and included a parking spot at Stewart School Lofts for the same price. So if you are willing to live a bit farther north from the Loop, then I could not reccomend this building more! read more

My partner and I grew tired of the impersonal living downtown (building full of people who would rather bother to acknowledge their neighbors) and decided to move back to the North Side. We could not be any happier with that decision OR with the amazing residential life we now have at Stewart School Lofts. We're glad we were able to be one of the first few months of move-ins and got an amazing two bedroom two bath apartment that is about 20% less than what we paid downtown. From the wonderful and mostly original hardwood floors to the fun details kept by the developers from its days as a school, SSL is truly a gem. The neighborhood is vibrant and changing daily with new restaurants, music venues and cool shops moving into Uptown. The manager, on-site, is a special person and goes out of her way to engage with the community (she also plans a great party for the residents on a regular basis!). Maintenance requests are acknowledged and most often COMPLETED within 24 hours. The roofdeck is a nice addition to our beautiful and large deck. All of the residents are friendly, diverse and fun! Truly, we could not be happier with our life here at Stewart School Lofts. read more
