I have fond memories from my childhood of my Scottish relatives who lived in Kearney bringing delicacies from Stewart's. So when we were sadly in town for one of their funerals, my family placed a few large orders. I picked up the orders for my older relatives who ordered over the phone and was over charged. As I didn't know what they had ordered, just volunteered to pick it up and pay there to save my older mother and elderly grandmother the trip. Now, Stewart's owes me approximately $200 & I haven't been able to get the new manager/owner on the phone for over two weeks for a refund!!! read more

We walked in, ready to spend generously on British imports - my husband is half British and he has been muttering for weeks about a fresh Flake bar. the store is bare and grubby. the cooler case looks decrepit. it took more minutes for the proprietor to surface and acknowledge our presence as it took to browse the meager stock. We still mask - there's no consumer good worth contracting easily preventable COVID. Today, that ended up being an excellent test for whether or not we support a business. The proprietor - owner? counter help? got rude about our masks. we live with 2 cancer patients - when I pushed back on his snide comment, he got even more nasty. Five stars! They are truly the last man standing. Growing up there were many Scottish Butchers to choose from Stewart's, Cameron's, Em-Kay and Royal (which my parents referred to as Claude's). I live half way across the country and ordered meat pies, bridies and sausage rolls for the holidays. They did not disappoint! Thank you! They get 2 stars because they are the only shop of it's kind . I drive 1/2 an hour to get there. I have been a customer for over 30 years. Today I paid for 12 meatpies at $4 each. When I got home I saw that he only gave me 11. Sadly this is not the 1st time that a "mistake" has been made. Very POOR customer service. Always check your order before you pay and leave. read more

We ordered Scottish Eggs, Meat Pies and Sausage Rolls for a Christmas dinner this year. Everything I ordered was correct and came unharmed in a wonderful food cooler. The cooler was used as well to hold drinks later that week for another get together with the family. The online ordering and shipping was a breeze with no issues. Everyone enjoyed the baked goods. So I say so if I walked in and said May I have two pounds prior to me asking for 9 would you have given it to me ?! He said no do you want the one pounds or not ? Stop putting words in my mouth. Today my wife and I went to Stewart's to place a large order. The owner told us he would not serve us unless we removed our masks. We explained to him we did not feel comfortable doing that and reminded him we are still in a pandemic and his reply was " there never was one". When I politely asked him if he was vaccinated he told us to " get the #$&% out of his store. They have never been very friendly there but this is the proverbial straw. Nasty owner. I went in to the store and just the owner was there, didn't see any other workers. He didn't have a mask on - I did. I politely asked him if would put on a mask because I'm immunocompromised. He started yelling to get out of his store and walked me to the door. Needless to say - I'll never go in there again! FANTASTIC. I had them delivery a surprise gift for my aunt. She is over the moon. She called to tell me that it arrived, and said everything was delicious. and that the portions were very generous. Also that everything was really well packed (air bubbles to keep things from moving or breaking, with ice packs, in a cooler, in a box). And whoever answered the phone when she called to find out who it came from was very kind to her on the phone - even though I'm sure you are incredibly busy. When 3rd and 4th generation Scots decide to stop coming here you know there's a problem. My mom went into the store today to pick up nearly $40 in food. She wanted to ask a question to the "gentleman" as he was getting himself a drink from the cooler. He told her he was busy. She thought it was a joke and proceeded to ask. He then said didn't I tell you I was busy. When a small business has workers that are TOO BUSY to help their customers that's a shame!! We didn't only go for holidays. Thoroughly disappointed. Hesitated to place an order due to the previous negative online ordering reviews, but they were accurate and I should have gone elsewhere to begin with. Order placed on 10/5/14 for 24 meat pies to be delivered to Colorado. Shipping charge for 2-Day FedEx was $115.75. Requested expected receipt date upon placing order. Received two order confirmation e-mails confirming order. No reply to request. Three business days went by and no information sent from Stewart's Scottish Market. A second e-mail was sent to them on 10/8/14. No response. Called (201) 991-1436 as soon as they were advertised open on the morning of 10/9/14 and was sent to recording. Left contact name and number and requested a callback to verify status of order. No call back provided. Called again at 3:15 p.m. on 10/9/14 New Jersey time and spoke with a young woman and asked for status of the order. She proceeds to tell me they're out of shipping boxes and my order couldn't go out until next week sometime. I asked if that was normal practice for the store to not notify a customer for delay of shipment as meat pies are perishable and someone would have to be home in order to accept a food delivery. She then began to talk over me and said to cancel my order then if I wanted. Not the best way to handle customer service. Guaranteed business loss every time. A customer should not have to follow-up multiple times to see what is going on with an order. No expected shipment date for special order food is not an acceptable business practice. A simple courtesy to contact your customer is expected. Order confirmation had already been sent verifying my order. If there was a delay expected an immediate notification providing the next available shipment day along with the option to cancel. Now an entire business week has been wasted and the search for meat pies will have to continue elsewhere. Really disappointed with Stewart's Scottish Market to say the least. ******* UPDATE 10/14/14******* Not even a follow-up from Stewart's to apologize. I found an exceptional alternative and they will get my business from now on. If you want true customer service, use Cameron's British Foods, Inc. in Florida. First, they are $30 cheaper than Stewart's for shipping. Second, the ordering process was smooth and flawless. Order notification, follow-up and expected shipment information supplied within 1 business day. From purchase to delivery takes 3 business days. Now, they know how to treat customers. I do not recommend this shop nor their website. The people who work in this shop are terribly rude and their order fulfillment is unreliable. I ordered a haggis online hoping to have it for Robert Burns night but it never came even though the web site said 1 day to ship to my region and I paid $12 for UPS ground shipping. The shop owner got on the phone and when I said I was upset about the situation was immediately rude yelling "Well it's not my fault you didn't say when it's for, Lady" (to be clear there's no designated space on the web site to say "when it's for." Oh, and, why else would someone order a haggis to be sent by UPS the week of Robert Burns night?) and then yelling "Well this isn't Amazon Prime, Lady!" (and a bunch of other rude things ending in "Lady") Yes I know, and I also used to run a frozen food business so I am very familiar with how it works. Now my Scottish dinner party is ruined and I will never, ever go back to this shop. Who needs to be treated like that? I've visited the shop once in the past and they were no less rude in person. Update- After I said to cancel my order and hung up, a more level headed sales person from the shop called me back and offered to send the haggis to me by Uber. I appreciate the effort made by this more reasonable person and the fact that he tried to straighten the situation out for my dinner party. I hesitantly accepted since it's for tonight although I'm still very upset with the way I was treated in general. It's too bad the guy who was screaming at me was the owner. I'm not in the habit of supporting the businesses of men who scream at me on the phone when I'm in need of customer service. There are other shops that ship haggis within the US, some of them also in NJ. I will be exploring those next year. Update 2. I've been coming to Stewart's market for years. However after yesterdays visit I will not be returning. I drove over an hour yesterday to score some of my Favorite Scottish fare, only to be asked to leave and come back at another time. I walked into the the store, there were three customers in from of me. Within about two minutes three more customers walked in. We were all standing in line patiently waiting our turn when the man behind the counter asked, "who is picking up an online order." two customers raised their hands. Then the unthinkable happened. The man behind the counter very rudely announced, "if your not here for an online order.... get the f*ck out and come back at another time." Several of us looked at one another and said "what" he then repeated himself again with the same statement. I said to him "that I don't have the option to come back at another time. I just drove over an hour to get here." His response was, "I don't give a f*ck." Several of us walked out completely dumbfounded. I've been coming here for a long time and the service has steadily been going downhil over the past few years. I enjoy their meat pies, bridies, white and black pudding. His haggis is mediocre at best, and his bangers are not proper. They are more of a sausage link as opposed to a banger. I've delt with some of their short comings for years, but allowing such a rude individual to run the front counter is inexcuable. The store is dated and in desperate need of an update. It is also filthy inside. To the owner. You have lost a long time loyal customer, and you will continue to lose customers by hiring such trash. To the man behind the counter yesterday 12/21/21...... I swear that the Yelp gnomes have been at it again. This is a great but tiny Scottish & British butcher/market. We, of course, bought a haggis, ring of white pudding, ring of black pudding, Mars bar, and bottle of Ribena, all for $45. The haggis was amazing--we did freeze it and later cooked it up for a meal during Thanksgiving weekend. Spicy, sweet, and perfect with a shot (or two) of Scotch. It's also neat that the "bag" (aka stomach) shrinks to nothing after the haggis is pierced and the filling served. Needless to say, it was so good that I decided to make haggis at home. Twice. Now I just need a meat grinder to do it properly, or we will head back to Stewart's to go the easy way. If you're scared of haggis, why do you eat hot dogs? Now that it's put back into perspective, do try it. They're excellent. The black pudding was quite sweet with a bit too much clove and cinnamon for my taste, though it didn't stop is from eating it every other weekend for a while. The white pudding I preferred, as it was more like spicy oatmeal. As it was just the 2 of us, we sliced each of the pudding rings into rounds and froze it that way. Heat up the cast iron pan, put in a tiny bit of water, then cover. When they appear almost done, uncover and let the moisture out so that each round gets crisp on both sides. Then serve with bread and soft boiled or fried eggs, before rolling yourself back into bed. Or into the snow. Either way, you will sleep well and stay warm. As with the haggis, best during the cold, dreary winter months, when you should be getting fat anyway. Or after the holidays when you don't need to fit into anything form fitting and people don't want to leave their houses anyway because there's yet another blizzard. THAT is perfect pudding and/or haggis weather. Lots of yummy biscuits and teas too, but go here for the meats. They're delicious. read more

I love, love, love Stewarts! We get a haggis from them every year for our Rabbie Burns supper, as Stewarts always has a food booth at the Long Island Scottish Highland Games every summer. We eat hot, fresh meat pies and bridies while walking around Old Westbury Gardens, and then on the way out we buy a frozen haggis to keep for later. It's so great to have this little bit of Scotland here in the US! ***UPDATE*** I would like to add that my review of Stewarts is really based only on their products sold at the highland games... I have never been to their store in NJ, have never dealt with their staff, nor ordered anything online. Today I read the other reviews for the first time, and I have to admit... since I am ordering online for this year's Rabbie Burns dinner, I ordered from Cameron's instead. Myself and my family have been customers of this place for 4 decades, we've always been loyal customers, but in recent years we have gotten such horrible attitudes from both the owner and his other male employee that it makes it almost not worth going there. Our most recent experience was myself and my mother both separately tried calling in an order days in advance, and BOTH TIMES we were met with disgusting attitude from the male employee. He answered and when we asked to place an order in advance, "which is what they prefer" this guy yelled, "first come first serve" and hung up. So i went there in person to place the order, when i told them what i wanted, that same asshole said "that's way too big of an order, you gotta place that in advance" and i told him i tried to do that and he gave myself and my mother attitude. And he proceeded to walk way slamming things. I feel like this place knows its the only Scottish market around so they think they can treat their customers so shitty. Its a real shame, if there was another Scottish market anywhere closer I'd go to them. read more
