Honestly, any old ice cream just won't do- because it's all about the the silkiest and most flavorful. Away from busy Tinker St. in Woodstock, Nancy's artisanal ice cream and menu alone, will make your spine tingle. Named after the owner's mom, Nancy's is several steps above from the typical "ice cream parlor". It's an ice cream and literature relationship that you'll get since they've partnered with the Golden Notebook (a well-known, independent bookstore in Woodstock) offering reading material plus book readings and other events (double-check if they're still happening during COVID). Or just sit down and take in the atmosphere with your ice cream. Flavors represent her worldly travels and range from 'Popcorn', 'Sour Cherry', 'Peanut Butter & Blackberry Swirl', 'Stout'- to name a few. I think throwing in like a Bleu Cheese & Walnut ice cream into the mix would be cool. But hey...my Peruvian Chocolate was scrumptious and hubs enjoyed his Mango Sorbet- though I will say, it needed a bit more Mango oomph. He liked his Oatmeal cookies and my Chocolate Chip ones were too crispy. Prices for 2 very generous scoops are $10 and cookies are $1 a piece. Considering the ice cream quality and size, I almost get the $10 tag, but I also feel it's a bit much. But if you really want to try something different, this shop is golden.....for its flavors!

I chose take out so I placed my order and then went shopping next door. They had bar seating and tables and one bigger table for larger parties. It's not a huge restaurant. The meatballs are good here. You can get them as a sandwich, with pastas or just meatballs alone. They also have vegan version as well. The store is pretty good. Frozen stuff including their meatballs and lots of other stuff. Hot sauce, chips and more.

A few things appeared to have been stored away and sorta looks as if it's kinda shoved to the side. For example : soft serve machine. So when I saw one opening in Kingston almost a decade ago I just shrugged and kept going. After learning Dianne Reeder's story you realize this isn't your ordinary candy store. Yes they have over 400 kinds of candy you can buy in bulk and the store has your typical kitschy trinkets but if you look deeper it's where you find Diane's passion and empathy for others. She just wants to make your day a little easier and for you to leave happier than you came. Certainly this isn't hard when you're scooping Janes Ice cream and serving vegan homemade soft serve using Fruition chocolate and coconut milk. Even this is fairly common place in a world over run by NYC transplants expecting everything to be homemade and gluten free. Where Dianne is different, is her commitment to community. In 2005, Diane was the winner of the Microsoft/Bill Gates Start Something Amazing Award (a program honoring the unique and inspiring ways that people use Microsoft related technology to pursue their everyday passions) for her work bringing attention to food insecurity. Her passion for cooking and her desire to help others led her to find a nonprofit organization called The Queens Galley in Kingston. The work she did with the Kingston Farmers Market was instrumental in getting them to accept food stamps. Diane's mission to have people come together and break bread in dignity has now spread across the country. Her commitment even landed her a diner at the Whitehouse with President Obama. To add to her resume she graduated the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park while raising 3 kids and running the candy bar. But let's get to the point. Diane is a pillar of the community where everybody knows her name. But what about the food? Just sitting outside snacking on my freshly roasted nuts (still warm) sipping on my 72hr steeped Lavazza cold brew I'd say simply perfect. Don't miss the carrot cake doughnut topped with maple walnuts and stuffed with macerated pineapple. The passion fruit and blackberry parfait or those rainbow cookie tricolor doughnuts. They have a sweet for everyone! Kingston Candy Bar might not be the hippest spot on the block but the love Diane puts into her work is palpable. Their menu is extensive and impressive; they have some all-star dishes on their permanent menu as well as a rotating daily menu with a legendary lineup of seasonal items. I really appreciate that they have dishes that are hard to come by such as lentil loaf and lasagna, and these never disappoint. The lentil loaf is unique; it is a little brick of lentils (not your traditional sliceable mush of breadcrumbs and minced veggies). It's very well seasoned and the tomato sauce on top is not overly sweet. The mashed potatoes and mushroom gravy and (very) garlicky greens make it a great meal. The lasagna is one of my favorite dishes. It's pasta-free and just made from layers of sliced zucchini and other veggies sandwiched with their delicious crumbly housemade cashew cheese. The herby tomato sauce is super flavorful. The side salad and garlic bread that accompany it are great also; an ultra comforting meal. We enjoyed the macro meal, although honestly not as much as the other dishes. The pan-seared tofu was delicious, but the arame seaweed salad was super seaweedy and salty - a bit much for me. I'm also not sure why they didn't serve it in a bowl, which would have made the rice etc. easier to eat. It seemed to be missing something - perhaps avocado, or a hunk of sweet potato. A few items at the Garden Cafe are a little perplexing, compared to how perfect most of their food is. The tempeh is just ok. It's heavily marinated in a sweet and salty sauce and kind of strange. Also disappointing that it's just a big brand tempeh rather than one of the local tempeh brands available in the area. The housemade focaccia is also bizarre. The texture made me think it was gluten-free (but it's not). Is it whole wheat?? If that's the case, awesome, but they should mention that on the menu, so you aren't taken aback when you don't get pillowy airy bread and instead get something flat and gray that could be mistaken for a biscotti. We LOVE the Garden Cafe and wish more places like this existed serving organic classic meals. We wish they would open a location in New York City, but until then, we will be making the drive!
