It was late and cold, and the girls were in dresses. My daughter is newly gluten free and nervous to eat at a place that she has not eaten at before, so she got ice cream from Stewart's prior to going to the Grandstand. She entered the establishment with the ice cream and sat down inside with her friends while their moms ordered ice cream for themselves and the rest of the children, totaling 14 other people. A worker approached the young girls, telling them that they had to leave, which they did. As the worker was walking away, another parent of the group was walking up to the table and the worker never confronted that parent to explain what had just happened. The girls informed the parent of the situation. In addition to addresssing the young children, and not the parents, not only did the girls have to stand out in the cold, but the rest of the party had to as well. Meanwhile, one the mother's calmly and respectfully stated her understanding of the policy to the owner, and then proceeded to explain that my daughter was the only one with ice cream from someplace else, due to her medical condition and level of comfort. The parent also explained that there were 14 others with the group that were still providing them business. The owner stated that it was disrespectful and that their policy is that customers are not allowed to bring in outside food and drinks. The owner was spoken to in a very respectful manner, while her tone was horrendous as she responded with phrases such as, "I don't know what you want me to do about it" and "...and your question is?!" She was very rude and lacked any sense of understanding. The girls and their friends go there often after school. Not anymore!

Today, we had a 10" Carrot Cake for an 18th birthday party. It not only looked picture perfect, it tasted great. The website describes the many flavors of cake available in different sizes in round or sheet cake style. When you call to order, you speak to a knowledgeable staff person to select a flavor, size, frosting, and filling. Then you select the decorations and colors you would like. The signature iconic script handwriting of their decorators is attractive and distinctive. You know it is a Villa Italia cake when you first see it. However, always check a custom order cake before you leave. When we picked up the Carrot Cake, the worker did not open box to show us the cake. They should be trained to show the costumer the cake before checking out! Fortunately, I did open box and saw a pink frosted cake saying HB Jackie. My cake was for an 18 yr old grandson. They fixed it so it looked nice, but it was not quick. Please check out my photos to see a few of the cakes we have ordered and enjoyed!

I finally made it to Jumpin' Jacks the other day. It's a mid-century outdoor diner, which is a local institution. I felt as though I traveled back in time to the 1950s or stepped into a scene from that old tv show, "Happy Days." The place looks awesome. I ordered a Jack Burger which consists of double hamburger patties covered in cheese and coleslaw on a bun. While the patties look flat they are tasty and very filling. I also had some fries, which were very good. I was stuffed. The 2 Jack Burgers--one for a friend-- fries and two fountain drinks ran me $26. Not bad. I was there for an early dinner at about 4:30pm. I've been warned that the lines can get very long. My friends suggested in order to avoid crowds I'm best off showing up at off hours. It was a fun experience. I finally get it. This a bit of Americana and those burgers taste good, too.

This year, you might find the cutest pumpkin in the patch on a Curry Freeze cone…read more Because I love getting soft served in October, I checked Facebook before committing to a post-brunch trip over here today, and was pleasantly surprised to see the Curry Freeze social team hard at work, as they recently made a post giving us coneheads the inside scoop about their final countdown: 10/24 people. That's the last day of the 2019 season (until then open daily, 11am - 9pm). With vanilla/pumpkin prominently displayed on the shrinking the menu board (but really, what other flavors do you need in October?), my order was a no brainer. I got a small twist on a cone (because I'm sustainable AF), and it only took one lick before started to feel like a true pump king. Or a hallow queen. Either way, it was the perfect treat for a mild mid-October day! In a sense, soft serve is really just melted ice cream, and Curry Freeze delivers on both flavor and texture. What could be a perfect storm of recipe, equipment, and TLC yields a twist that's exceptionally creamy (my mother claims it's the best vanilla soft serve around), and everything you want in the frozen purgatory that is soft serve ice cream. Whether you visit on a 90º or 60º day, the twist never compromises its integrity: it stands tall, is structurally sound, and stays thicc. I mean, is this soft serve #goals or what?! Completely inspiring. We might not deserve this summer-fall hybrid dessert, but what a time to be alive. The fact that even some of the best soft serve in the 518 has the opportunity to be basic and get it's pumpkin spice on is a win-win, so stop being seedy and get your harvest dessert on!

Still, the ice cream shop called the ice cream shop gets bonus points from me for being a local small business and I'm glad to see them reopen every spring. Now, back to the scoop. The small portion size was notable especially when compared to what we've come to expect at other local ice cream joints, and I'm disappointed because, who would rather have a smaller scoop of ice cream? We'll, not me. They have a few round benches across the parking lot from the shop, although some oddly have only the skeleton of an umbrella. Thankfully it was overcast when we came here most recently, so it wasn't an issue even though the only two bench seats with an umbrella were taken. Staff were reasonably friendly so service is not an issue, and I like the family vibe. Ice cream itself was fine, but I couldn't help but wish for a bit more of it.

They carry Perry's ice cream (my wife's favorite) and had a lot of great flavors. I had "Peanut butter smore," which I had never heard of before, in a waffle cone. My wife had something-berry cheesecake. The ice cream was between soft and hard, which I found odd but not bad. Perhaps it was starting to melt? They have lots of large tables with umbrellas, though our seats were very low to the ground in an awkward sort of way. Wheelchair accessible tables are available. Dogs are not permitted, so Clover got to watch from the car. I wish I had more time to read their menu to see if they had specialty sundaes and such. They had 4-5 flavors of soft serve and/or Dole whip, which is nice.
