Came on a Saturday for lunch with my boyfriend and got seated immediately. Service was nice and it was a cute family owned restaurant. I also enjoyed the interior and traditional decorations. For food, we got the Khao Poon, Pad Thai with Tofu, thai iced tea, thai iced coffee, and of course the mango sticky rice. The Khao Poon was flavorful and delicious! We really enjoyed the noodles which were cooked perfectly and bouncy. Only thing is I wish there was more meat. We both REALLY liked the pad thai. It was a perfect mix of sour, sweet, spicy, and savory. Flavor was on point and the noodles were again perfectly cooked so it wasn't sticky/starchy. I wish the tofu was crispier though! As for the drinks the thai iced tea was a bit diluted and didn't have much tea taste, but the coffee was better. Overall I've had better in this aspect. Coming from this American-who-visited-Laos-once... the Khao Poon is legit. Instantly transported me back to the streets of Luang Pabang. Except at Sticky Rice I could get it "American spicy" and not die. Would love to see more Lao dishes on the menu (khao soi or khao piak sen in particular!). I don't see many Lao restaurants or Lao dishes so I was so excited when we found this place, but left somewhat disappointed. This was not the amazing Lao food I had in Laos. On that tearful and over dramatic note... It's mostly Thai dishes with some Lao additions. We split the veg spring rolls, mango salad (lao style), Tom Yum Koong and Pad Kee Mao. The veg rolls were nicely fried with a good dipping sauce. The mango salad was sad. Not much flavor, a lot of spice, and the mango sticks were so hard (not ripe) that there was no real mango flavor. The Tom Yum Koong didn't have much flavor or spice. I personally liked it cuz it was all broth with some mushrooms and shrimp floating around, but I'm a sucker for just broth so I was content with it. Most people, I think, would complain. The best dish was the wide noodle Pad Kee Mao. That had good flavor and spice. Well made. Our waitress never asked what spice level we wanted now that I think of it. O'well. I'm married and here with my husband right now. I told him it's not going to work out because I just met the most amazing tom kha kai. He's fine because he met the best pho in CU. Update: Have returned for a second visit - husband agreed we'll work things out as long as we can keep seeing our soups. The owner suggested getting Thai iced tea with Thai iced coffee in as well and it was transcendent - a perfect sweet and smoky complement to the tangy and earthy lemongrass, coconut milk, and mushroom that build the glorious tom kha kai. I tried his pho - he got seafood this time - and The chicken broth with the perfectly cooked seafood gave a depth to the broth that was amplified with the addition of chili oil and chopped fresh Thai chilies. The ambiance, even when busy, is serene. The interior is warm and the flow of the space is close without feeling squashed. NOT GLUTEN FRIENDLY: The food is delicious...but don't trust them if you have allergies. The first time I ordered one of their dishes, I specifically told them I have a gluten allergy. "No problem, we will just sub the soy sauce for coconut aminos", my waitress said. The following week my digestive system was an absolute wreck, but I attributed it to some new supplements I was taking...that is until I got the same dish again. It wasn't really the same dish at all. This time there really was no soy sauce in it. At that moment, I realized the first meal I had eaten there was NOT gluten free at all, and was the culprit for my digestive issues I had been having. Luckily my gluten allergy is fairly mild. If I were a celiac customer, it would have been disastrous. The food is pretty good, and it's very spicy. Even the mild is hot. I adore all Asian food, and can handle a lot of heat, but this heat seems to bypass the lovely lip tingling sensation I have grown accustomed to, and goes right to the back of the throat, causing a constant cough (super fun with a the COVID fear floating in the air). Even if you ask for mild it's still just as hot. They don't change a single thing. I am beginning to wonder if the kitchen staff really cares to please the customer at this point. I really don't know. I'm giving it two stars because the staff is super friendly, and the place is quaint. Nothing real fancy. I've been wanting to try this place since it first opened, but the first time I tried to go on a Monday so, of course, it was closed. But finally got to go and it definitely exceeded my expectations! Very fast and friendly service. We went around noon on a Tuesday and we got our food around 5 mins after we ordered. My friend loved the khao poon so I ordered that and I loved it. I felt like it had a healthy balance of everything from the vermicelli noodles to the vegetables to the shredded chicken on top. Price was also reasonable. Both times the food was excellent, and ready to go at the time we requested. We ordered Pad Kee Mao (tofu), Pad Se Ew (chicken), Pumpkin curry (tofu), and Khao Poon, and mango sticky rice. The tofu was thinly sliced and well prepared. While the takeout portions were a little small, the quality was excellent. There was a lot of chicken in the Pad Se Ew, but not very much in the Khao Poon. The mango sticky rice was some of the best I have had. The coconut ice cream was especially creamy and the mangos were fresh and sweet. This dessert could feed one or two people. read more

A friend of mine told me that there was a new place in town that served Laotian food. Naturally, I got excited because I've never had ot before. Since Wedge was in this building before Sticky Rice opened, I was expecting a darker atmosphere, but I really appreciated the lighter colors. Since we have never had Laotian food before, we tried to order Laotian dishes and have a good spread of different kinds of food. We ordered the papaya salad (forgot the name), and ordered it Laotian style. The difference between that and Thai style is that the Laotian style is a little spicier and has a little more flavor. The taste was a little underwhelming despite the freshness, and the sticky rice we ordered on the side was overcooked too. We also ordered Pork Pad Thai, which was also a little overcooked. Still tasted good though. We also had a Laotian curry that had vermicelli noodles and shredded chicken. It was probably the best dish of our dinner, as it had a good balance of flavor and spice. We finished our meal by trying both sweet sticky rice desserts, one with custard and the other with mango. I would definitely recommend the mango over the custard. Overall, I'd say the food is worth 3 stars, but the dessert bumped it to 4. I want to come back and try their other dishes like the pho. read more

Visited with a large group and everyone was very impressed! We enjoyed the food so much. FOOD I was in Vietnam recently and I must say that the pho broth here was the closest I've had in Champaign-Urbana to true Vietnamese pho. The two friends sitting next to me are huge food critics and they drank every last drop of their bowl. I've never seen that happen. One got the duck noodle soup and the other got supreme pho. Everything tasted clean and fragrant. Some of the veggies were grown FRESH in their garden! Highly recommend the noodle soups! I ordered pad thai. I was only planning on eating half and packing the rest for lunch tomorrow but I ate ALL of it because it was so yummy. The portions are a bit smaller than other spots on campus and price is higher ($10) but you are definitely paying for quality. You can tell a lot of care went into the flavors. Both dessert options were delicious! Both have a sweet sticky rice base topped with ether homemade coconut milk custard or mangos. Refreshing and not too sweet. Super yummy! Great end to the meal. The desserts look small but I think it's just enough for two to share. Wish I took more pictures but we were too busy enjoying the food. I guess that's a good thing. We tried Sticky Rice for my birthday dinner. We ordered take out Panang Curry (left heat intensity blank so as to order the most mild curry), Thai dumplings appetiser, and Pad Thai. The Panang curry was too spicy to eat even one bite. Plus it was completely liquid, like soup. I had to throw it all down the disposal. The Pad Thai was, frankly, too disgusting to eat, and I noticed that no one else was eating it either. It tasted like old pork grease. I had to rinse my mouth out to get the nasty stale pork taste out. This Pad Thai is highly rated and I wanted to love it. It was truly terrible. Plus it came packed densely like a cake, and we were cutting it like slices of pie. It was just not good at all. We ate some and threw the rest into the trash. That left the appetisers to eat for the meal. We ate them all, but they appeared to be old, were very chewy and not pleasant to eat. Please think twice before spending money here. So we first met the owners of sticky rice selling fresh vegetables at the Urbana farmers market. We had been unable to try the food out, until last night. I am a chef and caterer and love doing reviews. What a nice mix of Asian inspiration in this Thai food. The pineapple fried rice, papaya salad and curry are always a good way to get a feel for Thai, for me anyway. While I like really spicy food I am a bit scared of their 20/10 Lao Hot designation. I just moved here from the west coast where we have amazing Thai food. I was on the hunt for Thai places and came here on a rainy day. We ordered a curry and pad kee mao. I always judge Thai places based on how good their noodle dishes are. The pad kee mao was decent. It didn't taste bad but I probably wouldn't order it again. The curry however, was highly disappointing. It was SUPER watery like they added water to the soup to make more of it. Curry is suppose to be thick and coat your rice as you pour it on. As a result, the curry was very bland. I never do this, but I actually sent it back. I don't feel good about going to a place where they seem to cut corners on their food by diluting it with water to make more. They also didn't take it off the check and I had to tell them to take it off. read more

I am not a very adventurous person, so when my wife suggested Sticky Rice a few months back I balked at the idea. Today I decided to step out of my comfort zone, and wow, what a great experience! This was one of the most satisfying meals I have had out in quite a while. The food was fresh, flavorful and the service was spot on. Leaving a generous tip wasn't even a question after our experience. Five stars all the way! The Crab Rangoon was the best we have had. I appreciated that it was large, full of flavor and not too crispy and not to chewy. And the sauces they provided took al already great dish up a notch. The spring rolls were also excellent, fresh, full of flavor and light. My wife had a soup I could not pronounce, but she ate the entire bowl and kept commenting on its rich flavor (flavor flavor flavor - a reoccurring theme!) I had the General Tsao's chicken and it was the perfectly fried and presented in nice bite sizes. The sauce had a good kick (medium spice) and I finished it all. Are we going back? Yes. Are we telling are friends to go? Yes. Should you go? YES! Lots of comments on the credit card fee. For me, I appreciate that we are rewarded for paying in cash. Food was good, relatively small portion. The service was ass. There were two waitresses on shift while me and my friends were there. The Asian lady was very nice and accommodating but the white lady that stood in front of the bar/register most time was an asshole. While we were still eating and talking, she slammed the check on our table. I was very unpleasant with that. She wanted us to leave so we can make room for the new customers, but the way she did it just annoyed me sooo much. While we were eating she kept coming to our table and asked if everything is good, which we appreciated, but a little too many times to the extend of making people feel annoyed. There are a decent amount of Thai restaurants in Champaign, IL but this place has the best mango sticky rice of them all! The Penang curry and Pad Thai are very delicious. It's a nice spot for dining in and take out. One thing I'm bummed out about is that they don't have Pra Ram which is a peanut sauce chicken entree.
