Until I was driving cross country and took a single square of a new bar I purchased in Wisconsin. Unknowingly and with no meaningful expectation, I literally did a triple take after my first bite. I was completely satisfied in both flavor sensation and satiation. My next day as I drove Iowa, I reached in my cooler, my hand touching and searching blindly for the square bar. "Ahhh" my hand, as with a smile, happily retrieved the divine cocoa. Carefully and joyfully I opened the package and took another square, the second from this bar. Again I had the same experience of natural, dark, pleasure balanced with coconut oil. I think I even had the experience of a very slight brownie texture. In silence, I acknowledged the the fanciful find. Driving through South Dakota, my secret manna chocolate bar was only half eaten. Again I had another square, and like a sommelier, I noticed the flavors subtly dance across my tongue. It wasn't until Wyoming, that I reached the last square. In a combination of great appreciation and dismay, I stopped my car. My last square. "What is this chocolate? Who makes it and where?" I read aloud, "Honey Mama's in Portland, Oregon". Unbelievable my destination! Since that day in the Wyoming desert in August 2020, I have purchased almost every flavor of Honey Mama's. I have brought them as gifts to friends and family. I keep them in the fridge and an extra bar by my bed. I talk up the bar at Whole Foods. During a recent visit to WF the bagger said, "Have you tried the Ginger Cardamon? Oh my gosh she said, you would never think these two spices would be so complementary." Be assured I have tried it more than once and 5 stars. Try the Peruvian raw cacao with a healthy kick of antioxidants. And as I write today I learned of a limited edition, new flavor, cherry hazelnut. For those who don't know, Oregon is famous for hazelnuts. This hometown chocolatier definitely knows. Can't wait to savor it. (But alas, it's sold out. I expect I might find on eBay for $100. If Honey Mamas reads this please make more.) PS - I have an idea for another special flavor. Do you?

I read up on their website, it's been around since the 30's! Someone took over the company and kept it alive, and is now sharing it with the US. The first store in the whole country... oh yeah, PDX! We bought three items, but two are gifts.... Very sad I don't get to try them. One is pistachio. They have more dark chocolate options, with some milk. Oh, just remembered, they have one truffle made with parm!! What?? We tried the milk chocolate hazelnut bar. They did a great job on the packaging, with the color scheme and non-shiny paper, very upscale clean look. First things first though: the space is great with nice large windows, everything organized along the walls. The lady there is authentic Italian, how cool. She was very friendly, and explained everything to us, what they offer, where it comes from. All ingredients for the chocolate are from Italy. I think she said the chocolate is from Ecuador, and the coffee is Ethiopian. They have a map, and you can see all the areas where the items are grown and where it is made. We have to come back and try more items. The milk chocolate bar was very smooth, and subtle flavor. I know they have bonbons and truffles, coated nuts, coffee beans, peels including bergamot, and chocolate pencils. Something else nice, they have a glass case where you can buy single bonbons. You aren't stuck buying a whole box. A great way to test out flavors and find what you like. We almost went back to buy more but had places to go. I'm wondering if they will have large easter eggs, that apparently is what the brand was famous for. We will see. Glad they chose PDX, welcome!

The folks at this sweet little bakery provided excellent customer service, and shared some really helpful recommendations. I was pleasantly surprised to see they offer plenty of gluten-free options as well! We ordered a dozen cookies for $40, and they were perfectly packaged in two cute little cube boxes. Each of the cookies are presented vertically in the box, with the name of the cookie conveniently printed in plain view! This attention to detail thrills me, and lets me know Nate's puts a lot of thought into customer experience. The staff recommendations were spot-on because the cookies were a huge hit with our friends. Soft and chewy in the middle, and cruchy and crumbly outside; these cookies really are fantastic! I saved a triple chocolate cookie for my lunch tomorrow and I'm hoping I have the discipline to wait until then to enjoy it!
