There are dumplings on the underside of it and you break each one off of the crackly part to enjoy. We did enjoy these but I would've loved a soy sauce to dip them in. They came with chili crunch, peanuts, and green onions but I wanted an actual sauce. They were very standard tasting dumplings and there was nothing extraordinary about them unfortunately. As always, we'd looked at the menu beforehand and decided what we wanted. It does state on their website that their menus can change due to freshness and availability. But we'd both decided on an app and entree we wanted only to get there and have none of them on the menu. I do appreciate a rotating menu to accommodate local items, but I would also love for those to be updated on a regular basis. So after rerouting, we decided on the chicken skewers as another app with the dumplings. These were chargrilled, flavorful, and had a nice crust on them. I got shrimp fried rice and Julia got spicy beef noodles. It was fine but I wish the shrimp wouldn't have been cut up. It felt like they chopped them up in order to not put as many in the dish. At $25 for this, I'd like whole shrimp please. There were a few pieces of raw spinach with pepper on the top. I would've loved a sauce of some kind. I would've preferred shrimp hibachi with fried rice from a Japanese place that included vegetables and sauces. This was not *bad* there was just SO much room for improvement. We both agreed that nothing was awful, but for these prices and the hype, we expected more. Our waitress was super friendly. Bonus points because they had match boxes at the host stand! There was a paid parking lot diagonal from the restaurant, so we had to walk through an intersection to get there. There are some spots up front if you can snag one. I ordered online and was able to walk in and pick it up with ease. The online order estimated about 25 minutes, but my food was ready in closer to 10 to 15 minutes, which was a pleasant surprise. The restaurant itself is beautiful. I even snapped a couple of photos while using the restroom and grabbing my order. Dining in would definitely be a very enjoyable experience. Another plus is that there is plenty of parking that is free and easy to access, which made stopping in stress free. The lunch deals are great and the portions are perfect. Then, I asked if the gyoza was freshly made or frozen & he answered, "We don't make any of that there the back." So, basically - this place just buys frozen Asian foods and then heats them up. So, I decided to go with something "safe" and I ordered the agedashi tofu. Agedashi tofu is a Japanese dish, but this place is clearly not a Japanese-owned restaurant because it was called "Age Tofu" on the menu. Sadly, when they brought it out, it was drowning in some sort of sauce that was not doshi broth. I also ordered the General Tso's chicken because I figured that maybe they'd do a better job with a Chinese entree. Nope. It, too was drowning in sauce. And, the thing is - I love Asian sauces. But, I want to taste the actual protein, too. The chicken was overcooked and I think they thought that the sauce would hide it...but it did not. The other funny thing is that the General Tso's dish came with an egg roll and fried rice. The egg roll appeared to be previously frozen, too because it had that "reheated taste". Oh - and fried rice is supposed to have a lot of vegetables in it. My fried rice had like 3-4 specs of carrot. It was horrible. Finally, the two pieces of broccoli that were part of my General Tso's chicken were also frozen and reheated. NOTHING about Kumo was fresh. This is lazy & disgraceful. Since Kumo was now 0-8 on fulfilling menu items, I figured I'd get a mango mochi dessert. Dang - they put so much whipped cream on it that you couldn't even find the mochi. Basically, this place was so disappointing. I had leftovers because it was so bad & I couldn't finish, but I wouldn't even feed the leftovers to anybody I know. Gardendale needs a better option.
