Food: fresh and delicious. This sandwich was a flavor bomb. Egg, leafy greens, goat cheese, and balsamic vinaigrette. These sweet balsamic and smooth goat cheese paired like heaven. Service: 10/10. We were seat right seats and our orders were taken shortly after enough time to survey the menu. Everything came out fast and fresh Ambience: 10/10 they have two areas, a seat and eat, and an order and go. They have an array of art work and murals. The arugula salad was disappointing and lacked flavor, not enough salt, cheese or almonds and the oranges were bland. I make a better version of this exact salad at home. This place is great. We got the Mercado salad and the whipped ricotta, both of which were delicious. The Chicken Masala, Chicken Francese, and Eggplant Rollatini were all super flavorful and well plated. Service was super fast and friendly, and the restaurant is beautifully decorated and clean. The portions are absolutely massive, and could easily be two meals, especially considering the price which could easily be higher for the portion size and quality. After 5 years of driving by this hidden gem, we finally made a reservation. We were not disappointed. The ambience is of rustic charm, quaint with delectable delicacies. Chloe met us and brought us to our table, which was tucked into the corner of the small but well spaced room. The decor was mixed generations;Edison lights, with railroad lights, green bottles, old ladders, barn wood, and pictures of the Sunoco Station in the 70s. It took five minutes for Chloe to get back to us for a drink and apps, that was disappointing. However, after that, the service was excellent. Food: we order the Arcancini. Melted in our mouths. Delicious. I ordered the Chicken Francais; the chicken was absolutely delicious. The menu said mashed potatoes however they were potatoes that were cool and was better paired with a bite of the chicken, which was delicious! The broccoli, needed about 1 more minute of cooking. The Stix and Stones burger was eaten with a few minutes. I may have heard in between bites that it was "unbelievable." It's pricey, but well worth a dinner out with a loved one or friends. Ok..... so I'll give you my experience exactly as it happened and not my opinion because I don't need to. Ordered take out which was (spinach ricotta ravioli ), which cost $24..... I received a quantity of 7! That's right 7 ravioli about the size of a an Oreo. I then called to ask if there was a mistake and apparently this is what you get for $24. Also I might add it came with nothing else. Literally nothing else not a salad, or a slice of bread. Now the taste which is my opinion. If I had a blind fold on, and I had two bowls one with their food and another out of a can. I really wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Stix n Stones has incredible food! I ate lunch here last week, and it was so good, I made a point to come back for dinner. This is exquisite food! And it's in such an unassuming little spot on the edge of Storrs...I'm glad I finally stopped in. For dinner, I had the Sicilian salad, which included oranges and capers berries with tomatoes, and it was fantastic. I also had the seafood parpadelle with saffron sauce. It was a delight. I expected the sauce to be creamy, but I'm glad it wasn't. More like a saffron cioppino with parpadelle. Exquisite! Add to that the bread with olive oil dipping plate, delicious wine, and a limoncello mascarpone cake. This little place really exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend it! read more

My Foodie Friend's Stix 'n' Stones, Storrs Conn is a DELIGHTFULLY LOVELY spot to spend a couple of hours. I loved my Primavera dish...after a request for no bread it arrived deconstructed w/ Mustard sauce which was proportionately appropriate and didn't over power veggies! Vanilla Chai cold tea was wonderfully sweet with hint of chai spice - delicious. Reported to me Chicken Parm was great tasting and "surprisingly filling"...Turkey Sandwich was a nice sandwich w/ thinly sliced apple. Nothing to complain about which is always GREAT!! Our waitress was timely polite and had terrific recommendations which shows a knowledge of the menu, diners, and the business. Patio dining is available here and is a nicely defined dining area. This review is based on breakfast experience of the newly updated restaurant. We think it is more of a 3.5 stars but we can't give half so we went with a 4 considering we haven't tried dinner service. THE FOOD: -at first glance the breakfast options are quite pricey but the sandwiches come with potatoes so that makes it a little more worth it -Egg, Pepper, & Bacon sandwich: my partner got this sandwich and he said the bread (grinder) was really good but did not enjoy the roasted peppers. He hadn't realized it meant roasted peppers and thought it was going to have cracked pepper on it. He's not a picky eater so it wasn't a big deal but overall he did not enjoy the flavor combo. -Good Morning sandwich: I am a big fan of spinach and I enjoy roasted peppers so I thought this sandwich would be awesome (I added bacon, too). Sadly I left this sandwich mostly deconstructed on my plate. The spinach was a THICK layer of sautéed spinach that I did not enjoy; I think a few leaves of fresh spinach would have been a better addition. The roasted peppers weren't the basic red kind I was expecting, but were the more authentic (?) Italian ones I would expect to have on an Italian grinder, in my opinion, the taste was really overpowering for a breakfast sandwich. There was a good amount of bacon and the egg & cheese were good, but overall the combo just was not for me. Also, I got the sourdough bread which was good but I think the grinder looked better. -breakfast potatoes: they were good, fully cooked, nice seasoning. I would prefer the option to add them on for $2-3 rather than having them be a built in item/cost with the sandwich but that's just me. -overall we think the components were really good but the execution was off. It seems like they are trying to really elevate your "typical" breakfast sandwich with unique add ons but we think the flavor combos missed the mark, especially considering the price point. We won't be returning for more of these sandwiches. THE DRINKS -Hot coffee: my partner got a hot black coffee and really enjoyed it! -Iced coffee: The original drink I wanted was out of stock so I went with an iced coffee. As someone who prefers decaf I'm happy they had iced decaf as an option. And let me say it was delicious!!! -the highlight of our breakfast was definitely the coffee drinks. THE SERVICE -we didn't have any complaints. Our server was attentive and kind. -she answered all of my questions very politely which I always appreciate since I typically have 2 at minimum THE ATMOSPHERE -if you were familiar with the old cafe/florist layout it is very different now. -upon entering you're in more of a marketplace area where you can buy local goods and place an order at the counter. This is the space that was primarily the cafe seating area before. -the space that used to have the plants (you would walk through here if you opted to eat outside) is now the restaurant seating area. They've added a server/coffee station and lots of tables. -the decor and lighting are really nice. Similar industrial vibes as it had with the florist but spruced up for the restaurant. -one complaint I have is that we were absolutely FREEZING during our entire meal. I didn't feel any drafts coming through the walls where we were sitting so I think it was more of the space in general. I looked at other tables and most patrons had their coats on. At one point I had to go out to the car and get my coat (it was warmer outside so I left it originally) to wear during our meal. Hopefully this is just because it was morning and the heat hadn't fully circulated in the space, but boy did it make for an unpleasant experience. Overall, the new restaurant seems great but we think they missed the mark on the breakfast food. We do not plan to return for breakfast but I am still looking forward to trying their new dinner service. The images I've seen online look very tasty so hopefully it is just that! read more

Recently renovated bright dining area with cute farm-ish decor. "Feel-good" food made with only the freshest ingredients. Tasty Mediterranean Omelet with tomatoes and spinach that seemed like fresh picked. Cheese was rich but not overpowering. The side of potatoes were not too salty but moist and lightly seasoned with rosemary. The berry smoothie was so refreshing! And the buffalo chicken wrap was generous and had just the right amount of heat. Tried the clam chowder which was tasty, but didn't have a strong enough clam flavor. Our server Taylor was super helpful and pleasant! I was surprised at the variety of baked goods and food to purchase from the case to bring home. Hidden gem in Mansfield with great food off the beaten path. Very unique style of decor but cute inside. There isn't a traditional full bar but they do have beer and wine selection. The lobster ravioli is really good. I had gone here before it was the dinner restaurant when it was just the breakfast and lunch cafe style restaurant which had amazing food as well and the cafe is still operating. I would get food here more often for lunch but it's hard to leave campus and have a parking spot when I get back. read more

We ate an early dinner on a Thursday night. There were only a few other patrons, so it was very quiet. If the restaurant was full, I think it could get very loud with the acoustics. The overall ambiance is nice but a little stark. The service was excellent, attentive, knowledgeable, and accommodating. The food was fantastic. The bread is made fresh daily. We had crab stuffed mushrooms and calamari appetizers, and both were excellent. My main course of chicken Calabrese was phenomenal, nicely flavored, abundant, and freshly made. Prices are reasonable as well. In this post covid era, we have found most restaurant faire has become mundane and service is poor, it is refreshing to find a place close to home that values quality. read more

We stopped to celebrate my birthday. We had been dining at Stone Row in Willimantic since 2018. We had high expectations. We ordered two appetizers (olives with feta and mussels) and two mains (bolognese pasta and the burger). Unfortunately, the service was poor from the beginning. Our server didn't bring us any water or utensils, and the mussels arrived without bread. We had to ask another server--who was much more polite and professional--for basic items. Still, we didn't consider it a major issue. The real problem came with the main courses. The truffle fries had no truffle flavor at all. We politely brought this to our server's attention, and she responded by coming to the table, putting her hands in my plate, eating one of my fries, and saying it was fine as it was. She then asked whether I still wanted to eat the dish or if I preferred to pay the check. We had brought candles and had mentioned in advance that we'd be ordering dessert, but at that point we were essentially forced to leave. We asked to speak with the manager but were told that wasn't possible. The mussels were good, and maybe the whole situation was just a misunderstanding. Still, we were treated very poorly. I have eaten in restaurants all over the world, from the university dining hall to Michelin-starred places, and I have never experienced anything like this. Never. Needless to say, we won't be returning, and we'll be sharing our experience with friends and colleagues to recommend they avoid this restaurant as well. read more

We had an amazing dinner at Stix 'n' Stones Marketplace for NYE. We started the dinner with the arancini appetizer (breaded rice stuffed with ground beef, peas, and mozzarella in a vodka sauce) and caesar salad, followed by lasagna and a seafood stew over pasta. There was enough food for at least one more meal for two. We had incredible food, service, ambiance, and an overall five star experience. If you haven't been there, we highly recommend this place! This is a wonderful local restaurant with amazing food and a homey decor reminiscent of the building's past. We were very excited to try out. This recently reopened restaurant when we found out that the chef was the one who ran Francesca's a few years back. Sal hasn't lost his touch; the food, primarily Italian, was prepared with great care and delicious. The menu does not try to include every possible dish; it is focused on several high quality items. We started with a Caesar salad, which was big enough to serve at least two people. Properly prepared with generous portions of cheese and (by request) plenty of anchovies, we got the dressing on the side to allow us to add what we wanted. One of my principles in going to a restaurant is to have something that I have either never had before or something that I would not or could not make at home. The first of these was another generous appetizer, arancini. This was a large rice, meat, peas, cheese ball, deep fried and served with a delicious red sauce. I had never had anything quite like this and will probably order it again when I go back. For the main course, we had to go back to Sal's lasagna, always a favorite in the past. The lasagna was not exactly the same as before, it had fewer layers and more sauce than previously. However, the flavor did not disappoint. It will continue to be a favorite. The real surprise was the baked stuffed chicken Mediterranean. This was part of a special menu, so may not be on the menu when you go. This was chicken stuffed with pesto, tomato, and fontina, with what was described as a mandarin orangelo creamy liquor. I would call it a delicious white sauce that had a citrus tang, some pesto, and a creamy texture that was neither too heavy nor too thick. It was delicious on the pasta and with the chicken. I have never had a dish quite like this. There were wines available by glass or bottle and a nice selection of beers on tap. The wait staff were friendly, attentive, and very nice to know. We have not taken advantage of the opportunity yet, but one can apparently get orders to go and even some frozen food. It is really great to have a restaurant in town, convenient to access, with such high quality food. We will be back again and again. read more

The ambience was great. Our server was wonderful. The menu was nice. Coffee was delicious. We ordered three different sandwiches and the one that we are going to talk about today is the chicken Parm. Everyone said this was a traditional Italian restaurant so we thought it was safe to order a chicken Parm grinder however the chicken was so tough. We were unable to bite through it. Our server was very apologetic and did remove it from our bill. The cutlet was not homemade. It tasted like it was a frozen cutlet that had been reheated and put on a roll with some homemade sauce. This is unfortunate because any good Italian restaurant is going to feature their own cutlets. The other chicken sandwich that we had had this huge hunk of chicken on there that was just too big and too thick. Would've preferred that one to have been sliced a little thinner. We were excited to try but will not be returning. read more

Awful. We were there for lunch in the middle of May. Two of the 3 meals were below common standards. My husband ordered French toast (and the menu stated with "maple syrup") The two pieces of plain French toast was so tough that he needed a knife to cut it, and came on an otherwise empty plate. No butter, no powdered sugar, no accoutrements, and fake maple syrup (in one of those small tubs like jelly packets). When he asked the waitress for real maple syrup, she said that would be an "upcharge" of $2 and he should of asked for it before. BTW, we're in CT which is known for it's freshly tapped maple sugar. I ordered tomatoes & mozzarella & balsamic vinegar. When I asked for dipping bread, I was brought 2 pieces of dry toast. Not what one would think of as "dipping" bread. The waitress was so rude and snippy that it made the experience that more upsetting. read more

There is surprisingly only a handful of breakfast places in this town. Luckily Stix N Stones is one of them and they open an hour later than most other places! I love the atmosphere here, relatively quick counter service, attached to a really cool plant store that also carries other knick nacks. They have an outdoor seating area with a bunch of plants, and it's dog friendly. The food is disappointingly just average. My husband and I each ordered the pastrami hash and we were SO pumped for it. Unfortunately most of it was not edible. I understand that the pastrami is from scraps but there were tendons that were unable to be chewed and the pieces were cut up too large. It was a huge disappointment. We also ordered two orders and they served it combined on one plate which was odd. I ordered a side of scrambled eggs and it came as a flat omelet that was cut. It was very odd and was not at all airy or chunky like regular scrambled eggs. Overall the ambiance and people are awesome but the food is not good. read more

I struck up a conversation at another local restaurant with what turned out to be the owner of Stix 'n' Stones. He was very enthusiastic so I promised to try; I admit that I was skeptical it would be as good as promised...but it was. This is top notch Italian food prepared by an accomplished chef. Started with the best arancini on the planet served in a pool vodka sauce; a giant portobello with cheese, tomato and greens; and a true Caesar with anchovies. The entree menu is all the classics: the four of us had eggplant parm, puttanesca; chicken francaise and carbonara-all winners. We had no room for dessert which include red velvet cake; a lemon cake, a chocolate torte...you get the idea. All desserts and some house made pizza and breakfast pastries are available to go in the front case at the entrance to the restaurant. Note: beer and wine only. The interior is a bit like a local diner but man, the food is excellent and very fairly priced for the quality and quantity. Our young server was a pro too! Can't wait to bring others back read more

I've never waited longer for food in my life. The restaurant wasn't even busy. Workers weren't the friendliest. I was seated about 5 inches away from another group and had to listen to their weird conversations while I waited a good 45 min for mediocre food. People were literally getting up and leaving. Also to add to it there was a really loud noise that kept going off. No one apologized for how long we waited for everything. Asked for water and never got it. I never write these and I'm not trying to be rude but this really put a damper on my day. Two stars because my drink was good and I can see potential in this spot. How lucky are we to have Chef Sal operating a restaurant in the Storrs area, again. We had an amazing dinner there in mid-November for my husband's birthday, and brought two friends along to celebrate theirs, too! We really enjoyed the quaint atmosphere Stix n Stones provides . The food ingredients are excellent and high quality. I was extremely pleased and excited enjoying a organic Pinot Grigio from Sicily called the "Art of Earth" The eggplant parmigiana was cooked to perfection and rivaled my Nonna's . My wife had a Angus Steak and it was delightfully dressed with potatoes and onions remencint of similar dishes found in Florence. Highly recommend and a great addition to the wonderful area of Storrs Connecticut. read more

The first thing to know about Stix N Stones is that breakfast and lunch and the dinner service are entirely different operations. Most, not all, of the previous reviews refer to breakfast. Both operations are excellent but the combined score underrates the Thursday through Sunday (4-8pm) suppers. Salvatore Urso is a real Sicilian chef who was wowing diners in Coventry, CT before the pandemic. He's a legitimate five star cook. Stix 'n Stones offers a pleasant atmosphere to enjoy dinner with friends. Pricing is reasonable and comparable to other full service restaurants in the area.
