I visited STIX Skate Shop based on reviews claiming they had the best inventory for skateboards. I came in with a longboard deck, ready to spend $200-$300 to build it out with top-quality parts. From the start, the associate in the shop was not pleasant/ unwelcoming. If he was a guy passing on the street, he was fine minding his own business. However, for being a sales person at the place on shopping at, he was shredding it up- not in a good way. Instead of offering help, he made it clear they only cater to shortboard setups. I learned that longboards aren't their specialty--but this dude missed the entire point of being in retail: you make money by helping customers, not turning them away. (Caution for ownership/investors) There was almost no attempt to offer what they did have, provide me options, or even ask if I needed shoes, clothes, or anything else. I drove here specifically to "shop local"and give them my business, but I felt like my presence and my money didn't matter to them at all. The shop's attitude was a real disappointment. If you're running a store, especially in a tight-knit community, it's basic business sense to treat customers with respect and try to help--even if you can't deliver exactly what they want. Aside from a pretty sick selection of shoes, apparel and skateboarding needs, Stix has routine raffles to allow you access to some great sneaker drops. I've been able to score a few hard-to-get pairs without having to pay a marked up reseller's fee. They run the raffle fairly and have new drops pretty often all as a perk of being a Stix SGV member. The service is always friendly and they're very helpful with finding you what you need. I'll continue to be a loyal customer just based on the great products and prices. My niece is new to skateboarding and she's been looking for new 2nd board. We feel so fortunate to have walked into Stix because after visiting a number of shops, she found a board she liked here! I have to mention that Steven was so helpful, patient, and friendly! He really made us feel like friends, rather than customers. He had a genuine nature in the way he explained things to my niece, like regular vs goofy. At one point they began talking about the way she rides (mongo) and he took the time to explain the benefits of learning how to push with her back foot, in addition to the way she rides now, so that she could have more control and eventually learn how to ride switch. Steven had positive vibes that really made my niece's first experience building her own board a memorable one! I rarely give a five but our experience warrants it. All thanks to Michael! There is really just one person tending the shop. (Note that we came here when the shops were just allowed to open due to the pandemic and I am not sure if that is the case.) There were 2 people ahead of us so we patiently waited for our turn. I noticed each customer was given the attention and time they needed. I explained that we have gone through other shops and checked Amazon but we wanted to see the actual board before buying. As we asked for his recommendation, he explained what we needed to know and he spoke politely to us. Remember that you are buying each part of your skateboard - deck, trucks, wheels, grip tape and bearings. We paid for our purchase and it is pricier than buying the already made ones. The experience made it worth it. We thought we had to build it on our own but the shop provides the free service to put them together. As there was no customer after us, we asked our questions while he built them and he was very accommodating. My older son gained knowledge and information as to basic care and maintenance. My younger son was allowed to engage in the building with as simple as handing the bearing. We are very happy with the customer service and our custom-built skateboard. Sign up for their free rewards membership. The earned points can be used on the next purchase. Currently, they have limited decks most likely because of the pandemic. Came in with my son to get him a skateboard. There was only one staff. There was no greeting when we came in but he was with a customer ringing him up but even after no acknowledgement that we was in the building even though we was the only customers after that. I tried talking with the staff asking questions and asking for recommendations since this was my sons first board but it was like pulling teeth he clearly didn't want to be bothered. This place has great service right outside the old town claremont shops. Have always been greeted with a smile and a good knowledge of products. They have a lot of skate clothing and shoe options. Update: we came here today to get the grip tape changed on my sons skateboard.. Michael and Derek were at the shop. I think they thought it was going to be a quick fix but the grip tape was old and dry and I took quite a while to take off and replace. They were super patient, pleasant and kept working at it til it came out perfect! I totally recommend the service at this shop. My son loves skateboarding and this is our go to shop!! We came here for a referral for skateboarding lessons. Justin has been my sons teacher and he's learned so much. After only 4 lessons he is much more confident and can comfortably ride alone. Came in to look for two boards for my son. A Penny board and a larger one. They had 3 different colors of Penny boards. I asked are there more colors available (I'm new to this), and the answer was yes there are many colors. End of conversation on her part. I then ask do they have a catalog or something to look at different colors. The answer was, "No, they don't have a catalog." End of conversation. I then ask her how will I know what to ask for if I don't know what they offer! She finally then asked, "What color do you want?" I told her that it all depends on what is available. Like I said, I have no idea what is available. It was like pulling teeth just to get some basic information. I then had tell her again how can we decide on a color if we have no idea what the company offers? Seems reasonable to me! Eventually she went to their website which showed us they offer MANY different options. Wouldn't it have been so much easier if right after I asked if there were any other colors available the sales woman said, "Here let me show you on their web site all of the different options we can order for you." My son wants two boards for Christmas and we want to shop local (Claremont residents). An -actual- skateshop. Fantastic addition to the Claremont Village. I went in today and bought grip tape and some new bushings for my very old trucks. The trucks were so old in fact, that we couldn't get them back together once they were taken apart. The gentleman at the counter spent -2 hours- working on my board until we got it together right. This is 2 hours after I only spent 20 bucks-ish. That is phenomnal customer service. He ultimately took one of his own kingpins out of his truck and gave it to me because they were out of new ones to buy. Who does that? That's insane. They told me to just bring it in whenever and it would be no problem, they gave me a rough estimate before I left. I came back on Thursday with the deck, and they helped me right away. They helped me go through each part I need, and their recommendation. I had a standard deck with softer wheels. So it not really the ordinary set up.
