This is one of the most educational stores in the city. I always see something I have never seen before in my life here. Where else can I touch a champion's boxing shorts from the 1940s, or see what a sweatshirt looked like in 1910? The co-owners know everything about fashion history. If you are a serious vintage collector weary of nineties clothes mislabeled as thirties, this is important to you. It's a pleasure when vendors know their stuff, and it's rare nowadays. If you love history, you will love this store. An added benefit is that if you are a woman who loves to wear men's clothes, there is a terrific selection here. If more than 3 yelpers (yes, I just said "yelpers") have an issue with the owner than it isn't the yelpers, it's the owner. I specifically came on here to tell about her. I don't like to give horrible reviews unless deserved and let me tell you, this horrible owner rubbed me wrong. First of all, I'll spend however much money I want on something that I want. She looked at me with this look like "oh he's not gonna buy anything so this is a waste of my time" kind of look. There was a guy in the store talking to her and I was trying to be polite and not interrupt them; while I waited for a break in the conversation (there wasn't, she talked so much) I was checking out a coat and she stopped her conversation to say "that's $1500" in this rude tone like I couldn't afford it. -let me tell you, I am in the market for a leather coat and I expect to pay somewhere between $500-$1500, I would NEVER buy a single thing from her store. I was rather run the streets of New York naked then spend a dime in her bull$#*+ store and support her type. Take my advice, avoid this place at all costs. The owner is horrible. read more

It's all very beautiful stuff that bespeaks of a bygone era. BUT... The owner is a little bit in love with the sound of her own voice. When I saw the kids clothes hung delightfully in a row in the corner, I happily exclaimed "Ah you carry kids clothes." Then, without skipping a beat, she went into a diatribe about how RL comes in to her store and copies her inventory for their own line. So I said "It sounds like the answer is yes, you do carry kids clothes." She kept talking. Then she went right into another diatribe about how she bought a certain piece "because of the ribbing." You carry one of a kind vintage, I get it. So do a zillion other places. I don't go to a store to be "educated" about your mission, I go in to shop. Your mission is pretty obvious to anyone with a pair of eyes. Then I picked up a jacket and she said "See now I bought that because of the interesting graphic pattern." Jesus I get it, you think your a sartorial genius. I don't like name droppers and I don't like pretentiousness. This store is riddled with both. It's a shame because the stuff is cute. It's VERY overpriced but it's nice merch. I just wish the owner wasn't so in love with herself. She seems like a nice lady, but she doesn't get how to leave people alone. If I'm interested in learning something, especially at this price point, I'll ask you. I don't need a lesson in fashion history OR your mental creative process. read more

Proprietor yelled at my pregnant wife just for not buying anything. My wife and I walked in the other day. She was excited because she had been a fan of this place. She walked in looking to see if there were any baby clothes (she was 8.5 months pregnant at this point). Upon seeing that there wasn't any at that moment, we thanked the lady behind the counter and turned to walk out. As we were passing through the door, we hear a loud, snarky comment pierce the air behind us "That's just PERFECT! Come in for 2 seconds and JUST WALK OUT!". I went here looking for something for my boyfriend and was pretty impressed by their collection. I will admit the store and selection is much smaller than I thought it would be. (The store is incredibly small and you can walk by it if you're not careful). But if you are seriously interested clothing from the 1940's-1960's then this place is for you. I will admit some of the clothing did have holes or stains on them but these items are very old and very hard to find so I personally didn't think that was a huge turn off. The store carried, shirts, t-shirts, jeans, boots, belts and a few other assorted accessories. I was pretty impressed with the shirt and belt collection. There is a huge selection for leather belts which I thought was a plus especially since I wound up buying one. I would probably go here again if I really wanted to buy a special unique gift. read more

Stock Vintage is a necessity for anyone seeking vintage clothing in NYC! Their collection of 1920s-1960s menswear is the best in the city. Beautiful store presentation as well. This is a slick store, directly across the street from my favorite espresso place, Everyman! Stopped in here today, to see what they had on offer. THe first thing you'll notice is the details. The old wooden door with fancy lock and emblem, the metal screen over the window, the old coat rack, and steel framed workbench table. They carry a lot of boots in various sizes, from cowboy boots, to combat boots and jump boots. These are actually all brand new, and in excellent condition, despite the vintage label. They also have sweaters, and vintage looking jackets and a lot of military gear. They even carried these slick retro Chuck Taylor sneakers in black and tan that I was very tempted to buy despite the $145 price tag. They were that stylish. If you're looking for this type of uber stylish military chic gear, this is a good stop in manhattan. read more

I've been collecting antiques and vintage clothing since I was a kid, and Stock Vintage is one of my favorite stores. The owner has an astounding collection of early menswear (everything she carries is 50 to 100 or more years old), arranged beautifully in a warm space complete with a very friendly and adorable rescued pit bull. The clothing is curated skillfully and there are always new cool & rare pieces to check out. Although Stock is primarily a menswear store, there are plenty of items intended for small men or adolescent boys that look fabulous on women. I've found some of my favorite pieces here. The best part is that pretty much everything you'll find at Stock is sturdy, so you can wear it over and over. read more

Owner is very friendly I was surprise with the negative reviews about the her being annoying and rude. She was passionate about what she does and has a good mindset on what she wants. This review is a 3 stars because the product in the store is almost unwearable. It's pretty much severely used clothes that yeah you can consider vintage but who cares enough to wear something that isn't even presentable. The leather jackets are totally dried out and abused looking . I understand this is what the store is trying to present and in some instances it's cool to see the variety of "worn out" clothes but the fact that the clothes are insanely overpriced makes this exactly what I'm not looking for in terms of expanding my vintage wardrobe. Not your run of a mill vintage shop. This is an expertly curated boutique where you can actually purchase historic pieces to wear. For the reviewers that have issues with Melissa, the proprietor - she's genuine and not fake. Never has been rude, to the point, and knows her stuff. Prices are high but everything in the store is high end and nearly impossible to acquire. Other vintage shops will carry crap fillers that take time to sift through. This store is the real deal. This is the store that fashion designers (ie from Ralph Lauren) will come to buy pieces to reverse engineer or find inspiration. read more

I've known Melissa, the owner of Stock Vintage, going on 8 years. She's been caring, helpful, passionate, attentive, and flexible regarding everything including and beyond my clothing needs. Consider this: in a city full of shows, clothing, discounts, deals, apparitional styles, and the type of patrons who walk into most stores with catalog thoughts and retail closets, Melissa is a one woman show who's dedicated her life so that most people, like you and me, can feel good about our 21st C. bodies, which, for some, tend to be largely not that different from those 20th C. bodies of lore. You can tell her what you want, if you'd like, even if what you're looking for doesn't exist. She's likely to know that. Don't expect her to say anything. She's a great listener. Very sympathetic. Understanding, and she isn't pushy, if the fit just isn't right. I've loved things that she hasn't and vice versa. It's not worth the investment to schmooze at most stores. It is here. Mention something off-hand, and don't be surprised if she's held onto something until you arrived in the store even if she could have sold it and pushed something similar on you because she knows you're an out of stater and may take the cake for being her worst customer, in terms of expenditures and hours busied and general distrust and distaste for the clothing industry, individualism, and market culture. I heard about this place from a NYTimes article, which gave it a pretty good write-up. I went with my boyfriend, who was in the market for some vintage jeans. Me? I was kind of disappointed with the clothing. I guess I have a different definition of "vintage." I picked up multiple items that were dirty, torn, and stained. And these were not beautiful or designer items with wear and tear but a lot of life left in them, these were plain old t-shirts in such a condition that the Good Will probably wouldn't accept them. And they were expensive!!! I saw one ripped and torn leather vest that was being sold for close to $400! And a pair of well used mass produced construction boots being sold for over $200! There were some nice items, generally the more durable ones: i.e., belts, belt buckles, bags, etc, and some nice leather jackets. Again, $$$. However, I think between the condition of the items and the price, we would not go back. read more
