Stockyards Brewing is a West Bottoms staple. They've been there for at least a decade and I love the historical building they're in. They have a parking lot behind the building. They also have a smallish patio out back, a large back room with a bar (I believe it can be rented out), and the main tap room. Between the main room and back room there's a hallway with windows that look over the brewery so you get a little sneak peek. The main tap room has kept the original charm of the place. It's like stepping back in time but with AC and no cows. They don't offer food but will occasionally have food trucks or you can bring food in. Service is always friendly even when they are packed. They offer a variety of craft beer and they can also do cocktails. I love the brunch stout and the black IPA when it's in season. On my last visit I had a sour and I thought it was good. They also do a fun event on Sunday called stockyards Sunday service. During service they have live music which is usually bluegrass and it's always packed and fun. I recommend getting there early to get a seat. They usually have a food truck on board during it but check the socials to be sure. If you haven't been, definitely stop in and check them out. read more

Stockyards Brewing is a unique place to enjoy a beer. Located in a portion of the former Golden Ox Restaurant in the Kansas City Livestock Exchange Building, the brewery carries on the history of the building by keeping the original bar and much of the interior decor. There is plenty of space to hang out at, and there is also live music on Sundays. I first came to this brewery years ago and had not been back because their beers, though good, were not my favorite. However, I stopped by on a Sunday in December in my quest to find local beers to gift to a friend and discovered that Stockyards had added sour beers to their menu. I am so glad that I came back here because the sour that I tried was amazing, and I had such a fun time hanging out with some cool Packers fans who shared their table with me and watching the game with them. As long as Stockyards Brewing keep making sours, I will be back. If you are a Packers fan, I was told that Stockyards Brewing is your haven. read more

Two separate points to be included in this review. First: The Bar. The location is awesome- the historic west bottoms of KC. The bar holds very original to the old stockyards- original wood, ceiling, very old time western feel. It's a treat to have a beer at the bar. The beer...!!! The beer is sooo good. Cereveza Royale is easily my favorite beer. They also have live music frequently. A very nice, chill, cool place to hang out. Second point: Private Events. Ugh. They have a beautiful private room (still very historic) for events. However, good luck getting in touch with anyone to schedule your event there. There is no working phone number available, I submitted two online inquiries with no response, and no response to their email address. I gave up. I feel disappointed about this but ultimately would come back for the delicious beer. read more

The best feature of this bar is the ambiance. It's got a sort of old-school rustic fanciness you see more in movies than in real life here in 2024. The service is also really good, and most of the crowd seemed to be loyal regulars. The beers were good, but not great. I was in there during Sunday Industry day. They had a live band which was a pleasant surprise. They had a food truck out front but I didn't try it so I can't say anything about it. I was told by the bar staff that there is usually a food truck out front on the weekends. I want to say that the bar staff did an amazing job even though the bar was packed of the band and there was a steady flow of people at the bar, I don't believe I ever waited more that a minute for a beer. They were defiantly on top of their game. The Stockyard Brewing company's beers were all really good and had a good mix of IPA, Pale Ales, and a Red. Stockyards is an unique brewery experience in the bottoms. The smell of the Golden Ox coming in through the walls and as you walk inside is glorious. The deep wood walls and decor makes me think of an old smokehouse and their beer is the perfect treat. I'm a huge fan of the Gold Rush Hazy IPA. Everyone I was with loved their different styles of beer and it had a great spot to chill and relax with great conversation. The downside is they don't serve anything to eat, but will allow you to bring food in. The staff has all been amazing and you never wait long to be served. read more

Now, let's talk about the beer. Oh, sweet nectar of the gods! I got a taste of the Stockyards Black IPA, and let me tell you, it was like drinking liquid gold. The brewers here are clearly brewing sorcery in those barrels. The servers guide you through their heavenly selection with a smile, making you feel like the beer connoisseur you secretly wish to be. But watch out for the parking situation--it's like a riddle wrapped in a mystery. I couldn't figure out if I was allowed to park...more signage is needed! So I just parked on the street. One thing that might have been nice (if I'd been hungry, which I wasn't) is a food menu. Maybe something to add in the future? What a super cool place!! You literally feel as if you are in a time warp back to the height of the KC Stockyards. This place is very nice and very unique. Aldi, the beer is great. Located in the historic Stockyards district, this place is an uncommon find amongst more modern buildings and new bougee condos. When you step into Stockyards, you'll think you were thrown in a time machine and that you came out into a different century. The owners have kept with the original intent of the building (originally the Golden Ox). It's beautiful. As for beers, I really like the Cerveza Royale and their Yard Sale Pale Ale. If you come on a Sunday, you might even see a blue grass band. They even have food trucks outside. Definitely worth checking out. read more

First, I love all the chances to explore the Bottoms, when showing a friend around KC who also loves beer we decided to check out this brewery. My friend had the Black IPA and the Hazzy IPA, I don't care for IPA's but he convinced me to try both, and I actually quite enjoyed them. I had the Stout and the Scottish Ale. This is a cool little spot that finds itself in a neighborhood that is coming back to life. It makes its home in part of the original Golden Ox, a long gone legendary Kansas City restaurant, and does a good job embracing those roots. Besides the old wood paneling, the venue has a few old photos and other historical items hanging on its walls that will take you back in time and tug on your nostalgia parts. It's a cozy spot. While there is a decent sized bar, most of the room is made up of small tables and booths. Depending on what's going on, it can fill up quickly. Speaking of what's going on, the venue doesn't have something every night, but does schedule some events here and there. Sometimes they have live music. Sometimes they'll play some vinyl. Other nights they'll play trivia. Regardless, of what's going on, it's usually pretty chill. One last note, the venue does not serve food however they do allow you to bring it in. The initial vibe isn't really like most of the places I usually go, but the beer is good and the interior is quite nice. It feels almost like a private club area. Maybe like a cigar or poker club? Went for a couple of drinks here early on a Friday afternoon. I had a flight- you get to pick any 4 of the beers from their current rotation. I had the cerveza, two wheats, and a stout. The stout was my favorite. I ordered another wheat, and they asked if I'd like raspberry or passion fruit in it- I had them put raspberry in it- it was delicious! My only disappointment is that I got hungry and only half of their snack menu was available. If they up their food offerings, I would give them 5 stars! read more

This looks like the kind of place you'd pull up a spot next to Don Draper and his fellow Ad-men after a long day of drinking at the office. Sub out the scotch for some solid beers in this former Golden Ox space and you've got the new Stockyards Brewing. The throwback interior adds a unique element to the beer scene in town, as does the nice beer list. I love a lot of the breweries around town for their patios (and usually dog-friendly patios) but this one is an exception. The magic happens and stays indoors here, which might bode well in the cooler months. I did a flight with: Golden Alt (C+) Papa Pils (A-) Brunch Stout (C) West Bottoms IPA (A-) So for me, a mixed bag that trended positively. The Golden Alt sounds like something I'd like but I just didn't care for it. It was like a hybrid of 4 beers with Hefeweizen elements, Saison elements.. it didn't work for me. The Pils was flavorful, refreshing and perfect for the summer. Would love to have that again. The Brunch Stout should be called a Punch Stout. This thing fights back with a flavor overload. It grew on me as I went through it. The West Bottoms IPA hit the spot on this particular morning. That's right I said morning, it was a holiday vacation don't judge! It reminded me a lot of the Boulevard Pale Ale, with a mellower flavor than most IPAs but still very good. I think the best is ahead for this cool spot and I'm glad to see more and more places like this popping up around not only the West Bottoms, but the city in general. read more

Super awesome venue, the building opened in 1949 and still has the classic feel to it. When you walk in, you time warp back to the 40's and the vibe radiates through the air. The stockyards have a rich history in Kansas City and Stockyards Brewing embraces that. The beer is awesome, we split two flights and checked in on Untapped only to find that if you level up, free gear is available. Staff was super nice and helpful and atmosphere was awesome. A classy bar reminiscent of yesteryear. The decor is of Rich mahogany...kinda a big deal. They brew their own beer here and you can get a flight to sample. The bartender was friendly and I had a good time. They do have some nice TVs with football on. The spot is a little out of the way but worth it. The place still feels like an episode of Mad Men except now they've swapt dirty martinis, steaks and oyster shooters for lots of good brew. Men in suits for men with beards and Charlie Hustle shirts. Cigar smoke for the scent of hops and yeast fermenting into liquid gold. Couldn't ask for a better new beginnings for this old soul building. Much of the Golden Ox is still visable. New owners are legit in their love of all things beer, Kansas City history and it's inhabitants. So I wasn't at all surprised to find them lacking in pretention and absolutely chill hanging at the bar chatting about brew. Beer, for no other reason than this did I go but soon I found out a full menu will follow. Can't wait. I sampled almost everything on tap in a couple flights, personal faves saison and stout. For weekend #6 of my Covid-19 KC brewery tour, I went to Stockyards Brewing. This visit was a quick 2 steps in and out the back door to pick up a 6 pack and some Beer Jerky to go. Certainly not as pleasurable as my last visit of drinking in-house but just as thirst quenching. Stockyards tasting room / bar is one of those great renovated spaces that anyone with a love of KC history or the era when cattle and cowboys ruled the mid-west; needs to pay a visit. This trip I only sampled 1 beer instead of a flight. I took home a 6 pack of 12 oz cans of County Clare Irish Ale (5.5%ABV) for $9 and a 2 stick pack of Scottish Ale Beer Jerky for $4. A very good Ale and certainly the most economical of the past 6 weeks exploring the Beer Brewers and Architects of Ale in this great metropolis. The process on line was easy to order and was ready in a few minutes. I can't wait to return and soak up the historical artifacts, maps and murals next time, but thanks for the great little buzz while I puttered around my yard during the pandemic. read more

Over the last few years Kansas City has been a hub for amazing microbreweries and Stockyards is at the top of my list. Located in the East Bottoms, Stockyards seems like a secret hideout that transports you to another place. I always leave happier than when I arrived (maybe that's the beer talking?) The decorations are Western themed but in the coolest way possible. I walk in and feel like I'm in Westworld about to get in a bar fight. The beers here are delicious. The Cerveza happens to be my favorite because of it's light and refreshing taste. Close second is the Hefeweizen which has more depth but is equally refreshing. They have live music some nights and we haven't made it out to enjoy this experience but it's definitely on my must do list soon! read more

Walking in here it kind of reminds me of an old steakhouse, which in this case is a positive thing! They've kept the vibe and feel of the stockyards and it's history while still being new and trendy. Located in the old Golden Ox lounge, this place aesthetically will confuse anyone not familiar with the old steak place. Those of us who are from KC will marvel at how Stockyards Brewing was able to re-purpose a seeming ancient motif. The moment I walked in, I think I audibly gasped. It. Looks. Exactly. The Same! Maybe strange for an industry that seemingly takes Industrial Hip Interiors as gospel, it's nice to see a brewery that's warmer and full of character. Now for the beers! The boyfriend and I tag-teamed the flights (Four 4-oz pours for $7) so out of the 10 beers they had, we tried 8. Holy smokes! That Smoked Imperial Pilsner is hands down one of the most interesting and addicting beers I've had in my life. I told the bf that it was like drinking smoked Gouda... but not cheesy. Anyway, I also loved their Black IPA and their Golden Alt. I'm not even much of a beer drinker (wine's my game) but I absolutely loved this place. They have a cocktail list and they also serve cans of soda along with some munchies. We were here on a nice Sunday evening and there were people and families and children hanging around. You'll notice they carry several scotches and whiskies and a rum and a gin and a tequila. After looking at their cocktail menu, they only carry the liquors necessary for their cocktails and I honestly find that hilarious. If you want a rum and coke, though, I bet they'd hook you up. We ended the night with shots of rye and the bartender did one with us. So, I'm a fan. Big fan. This place will be huge. It's awesome. No other places are good. Fake breweries. The Golden Ox was a Kansas City landmark. I had been in once, right after their grand opening, and thought this place was alright. It was extremely crowded, and while the beers were good, they weren't really my style. Going back a second time, I think they Stockyards Brewing has definitely found their tempo. Just like the venerable old restaurant whose space it now occupies, Stockyards Brewing works best as an intimate experience. The curved booths can give you the feeling of privacy even though you're in the middle of the room. Carry a flight to a small table in the corner and tuck into a conversation. Even the bar, with just the right amount of lighting, is inviting and close. You can wander around the corner and down the hallway to see some of the historical pictures of the stockyard that originally put Kansas City an the national map. And just as important as the deep history of the venue are the staff who keep it, and keep it they do. You can tell these people have a love of the history of the city as much as they have a love of beer. And they have much to tell you about both of those loves. I would definitely recommend taking the tour into the older parts of the building, as well as the newer additions and hear about how they got started. You'll develop a deeper appreciation. Just like Golden Ox before, I would say this is not a great place for children, but it doesn't have to be. This is a perfect adult's night out. Grab a table and enjoy a beer or two and you'll feel like you're having the same kind of secret conversation in a smoke filled room you've seen in movies, only without all the smoke. read more

Ghosts of the old historic Golden Ox still reside here. If only they could talk! I am absolutely thrilled that a fine brewery has opened here and really left the Ox vibe in tact. They've done a bit of clean up (and to be sure, it needed it) and the bar is modern, parts of it rehabbed and what a nice job they did. But... it's all about the beer, and a fine job they're doing. You'll know I was happy by the time I left around 3:00 p.m. because I had three different beers. Started with the Smoked Imperial Pilsner which intrigued me. Different, that's for sure and part way through it after you get over the shock, it really works. Who knew? Fine glass of beer for sure but maybe a bit out there on the edge. I like that. For #2 I went with the Golden Alt. Light but surprisingly hoppy, leaning towards an IPA I thought. Good, but not my favorite. Not a criticism of the beer, just my tastes. Ended with the Hefeweizen which was nice and malty and full of that overripe banana after-taste. Quite fine. Clear they really know what they're doing here and I love the fact that a brewery has opened in this part of town and pays homage to its former long-time tenant by leaving much of the feel of the place. THIS PLACE IS BADA**!! From the outside you would never expect what you walk into. It's a step into what I can only imagine was the prime of the 70's! Carpet everywhere! Lots of wood, dark corners and old western paintings lining the walls. It was pretty cool for the young people! They have an awesome event space to rent out located next to the brewery inside. Pretty big space. The brewery is cool with windows to see what is going on. And the drinks were really good too. Local Beer Nerd Reporting... I tried most of the beer offerings during my visit and they have a solid core of beers. Here is my beer by beer review: Hefeweizen: Bananas and clove flavors abound in this one which is exactly the way a good Hefeweizen should be. Enjoyable beer I could have a few of these in a sitting. Golden Alt: Clean beer with lots of complex malt flavors. Again another very crushable beer. Papa Pils: Fantastic Pilsner! This might be one of the best Pils in town. I bought a growler of this to take home. Brunch Stout: Coffee bomb. Way too much coffee for me but I am not a coffee lover so this just isn't my kind of beer. Black IPA: Roasty and malty but where are the hops? This is more of a below average porter than an IPA. West Bottoms IPA: Disappointing, another IPA missing the much desired IBUs. The base beer has great color and malt flavors but zero in the hops department. I also have to mention that the ambiance of this place is awesome. From the leaded glass ceiling above the bar to wood walls this place has a lot of character of the old days of the West Bottoms. I am happy to report that the Golden Ox has been lovingly transitioned from an iconic West Bottoms steakhouse into a beautiful brewery. You can tell the owners worked hard to maintain the cozy feel of the Ox, but updated the space for today's beer-loving clientele. My husband and I visited on a Friday night and ordered a flight to share. While all of the beers were good, we were particularly fond of the farmhouse ale. We also ordered some chips and cashew queso. It was smooth and perfectly spicy and delicious enough to convince me to try to recreate it at home. Stockyards is a great addition to the KC brewery scene. We will definitely be back! read more
