They have been written up several times by a variety of well-established publications (it is not just me) and they are also listed on the menus of some of the best restaurants in town. They are perhaps the most patient of farmers. If you are not sure or can't figure out how to pick out your fruits and vegetables, they will help you and/or teach you how to select them yourself. Any vegetable they sell seems to be best in class. Also on the list of vegetables/herbs I think they do well, includes, but is not limited to: basil, cucumbers, green beans, summer squash/zucchini (which I hated until I tried theirs) eggplant, broccoli, romanesco, pumpkin, brussels sprouts and fennel. They have recently started to weather the cold and sell greenhouse tomatoes and other winter veggies during late fall and early winter. Their veggies are better than anything you will find in the grocery store. It is worth the trip to the Greenmarket just to stop by Sycamore. From late May to November (now December) they can be found the the Union Square Greenmaket at 16th Street and Union Square East.

I found this extremely tiny gem of a farmers market just last week taking a new walking route to…read morework. I didn't think there were ANY farmers markets in Borough Park. Let alone one of the Greenmarkets. It's on 14th Avenue between 49th and 50th street. They take credit/debit cards and EBT, just like all of the other Greenmarkets. There's only about 4-5 vendors there on any given Thursday. Thursday is the only day they are open. It gets VERY crowded there. Even in the very early morning. Selection is limited since there are so few vendors. You have Acevedo's Farm, John D Madura Farm, Suka-Di Farms and Toigo Orchards. Get there bright and early to get the freshest picks. Acevedo's Farm is where to go. Fresh ears of corn for 50 cents each. Well worth it because they are the largest, plumpest ears of corn I've ever seen! They also had HUGE fresh green beans. The orange mini zucchini were also a delight. All at decent prices too. Toigo Orchards has the best apples. Not much of a selection. Basically just Gala and Granny Smith. So incredibly delicious though. Suka-Di Farms are crazy expensive. None of the orchard fruits they sell are under $3.00 a pound. They also have a vendor selling honey in various forms. Overall, it's not a bad market to hit up if you are in the area. Nothing to go out of your way for but if you're passing by, make a stop!

After all, as we all know, there are precious few options for fresh fruits and veggies in the area. :( Red Jacket is up here, which sells a great variety of apples. There's a dairy stand, and I've picked up a pound of fresh ricotta for $5. They also sell a lemon yogurt that has several of my co-workers addicted; I'm afraid to try it. The bread stand plays fun music and sells a wonderful, redolent selection - baguettes, kale asiago breads, tomato onion breads, rustic breads, and so on. You can still pick up potted herbs, and there is a fantastic variety of seasonal vegetables. Currently, the winter squash look pretty awesome. I'm a bit biased because I work with CHALK, but do come check out the CHALK stand! We had butternut squash pizza yesterday. Some of her past gems include watermelon mint cucumber smoothie, charred pepper salad, and green tomatillo salsa. She has easy and nutritious recipes and a simple, fun lesson every week. Honey, kale, peppers - you name it, she's probably done a highlight of it at some point in time. The Greenmarket runs every Tuesday from 8am-4:30pm until late November. Credit/debit cards are charged an additional $2 to help offset the costs of free fruits & vegetables for EBT holders. (Oooh - if you have EBT, you get $2 in greenbucks for every $5 you spend). So if you don't have EBT, you can either bring cash or donate $2 to EBT when paying via credit/debit.

Nina is responsible for bringing farmers' markets to London, England and at one time was in charge of the Union Square Greenmarket. Her book is a great read and will teach you the importance of eating natural, local and sustainable foods. She is a big supporter of meats and cheeses as well as fruits and vegetables and suggests "eating around the edges of the supermarket" and staying away from processed foods. These are young, new markets and at the moment they're small. The one at Petrosino Square has perhaps a few more vendors than the South Village market, but everything will change come September when people have returned from vacation and all that harvest produce starts rolling in. The market is in session from 10am - 2pm every Saturday until December 23rd. And these are not farmers' markets in the true sense. They are "real food" markets and feature food from not just farmers, but also "food artisans", or people who make things like pickles, zucchini bread, yogourt, etc. Last Saturday I picked up a delicious round of cheese bread and bag of pea shoots courtesy of Thanksgiving Farms, some unbelievable bacon from Cayuga Farms and a slice of delectably moist zucchini bread from Brooklyn's very own Angie's Exotic Bakery. Stone Ridge Orchards from the Catskills was in the process of unpacking big baskets of ripe produce and there was even a pickle stand going on with lots of free samples. Shopping at one of the Real Food markets is a great way to get to know local farmers and purveyors of down home, natural, sustainably raised food. It's healthy, it's tasty and it's fun!

We eat eggs Daily (3 each hard boiled) and love to find organic products, but I have been disappointed several times purchasing your eggs. The picture I attach shows the yolk (lighter being Knoll Krest) vs Wholefoods (Nellie's Free Range). I just don't trust the product, a yolk should have a darker color if fed wholesome diet on a "free range farm", additionally the egg white is fragile and more like what I see in cheaper versions of eggs I've had to 'make do with'... The difference is…read morethat the Youthmarket not only serves the community as a source for fresh food, it provides job skills training and food education for the neighborhood young people who staff it. The Youthmarket in front of the Abrons Art Center is open on Thursdays this summer from 3-7PM. On opening day last week it was just one table, but the quality of the offerings was high, the prices were fair and there was a reasonable variety of fruit and veg available, including cherries, carrots, apples and beets. Not organic, but local and very fresh. Prices about the same as at the Greenmarkets. This little Greenmarket is not worth going out of your way for, but well worth a visit if you live in the neighborhood. If supporting the Greenmarkets gives you a warm fuzzy feeling, supporting the Youthmarket ought to provide an even warmer fuzzier feeling. If all you're after is some fresh local fruit and veg they're a good source. Glad to have them in the neighborhood.
