I wish I could give my experience a zero star rating. Upon visiting the Stonehill restaurant over the weekend we were met by the hostess (and manager) Ashlea. She was very rude to myself & my group. She said she was unable to accommodate us and turned us away, yet she accommodated a group that entered the restaurant after us. Upon reading other reviews about this restaurant I have noticed that Ashlea has a bad reputation. Her unprofessionalism caused her to lose several customers that day. I plan to tell my family and friends about this terrible experience and we will never by Stonehill wine, nor visit this restaurant, again. read more

Beautiful grounds that sit up in a hill. There are picnics outside overlooking some vines that offer a nice place to enjoy a bottle of wine. Some snacks are available inside and while not inexpensive they are good. Wine: for dry wine drinkers, we were pleasantly surprised by the Vidal Blanc. For under 10$ a bottle it's a steal for a light, easy drinking wine. The Cross J Norton is what once convinced me to appreciate and love a good Norton. Try it here! These are not vina viniferous grapes but if you go into tasting MO wines not expecting those with a willingness to expand your palate, you may end up finding some you really enjoy! Covid precautions: they are limiting the number of people in tasting rooms. The tasting rooms gave plexiglass between servers and visitors. The rooms are large/tall ceilings. We felt like they did a great job here of at least attempting some sort of mitigation strategy. read more

Ahhhhh. This winery was actually the worst winery I have ever been too. We where asked to leave an area WHERE WE PAID to be!!! I asked the staff why we where not aloud to be in that area and she said it was for token holders only. We where token holders. We paid to do a tasting and be in the token holder area. The worker could not explain that. We where rushed out of the tasting because people where waiting. So disrespectful and rude. We are in a group of 18 and will not return or recommend this shitty winery to anyone else. read more

This place is a bit more commercial than I like but the winemaker at Bommarito suggested it since it was our first time in that area. We did the complimentary tour which was interesting and followed it with a tasting. I was surprised that a winery this big gave plastic cups for tasting. Tsk tsk I did enjoy some of the wines and bought a bottle as a gift. It gets packed here so parking may be far (and uphill) but there's a golf cart that can pick you up and drop you at the door. The winery is beautiful and sits atop a hill overlooking Hermann and the site of the original vineyards. It is worth a visit just to stroll around the grounds. The winery tour is free and lasts around 30 minutes. You'll learn a bit about the history of Hermann and the winery and walk through the cellars. It was definitely worth our time. We enjoyed seeing the old cellars and hearing more about the wine making process. Our guide was friendly, informative, and was happy to answer questions and engage our group. We did not do a tasting, but purchased a bottle of Norton to bring home. I was also excited to learn that they were having their Christkindlmarkt during our visit, but it turned out to be not much more than 20-30 vendors set up in their Sherry building. Yes, they had mulled wine and there were a couple of booths selling German goods. I'm glad we didn't make a trip specifically for this event. We had been looking forward to taking my sister in law here for lunch for weeks before her visit on July 20th. Finally the day arrived we even looked at the menu online so we knew what we wanted before getting there. I ordered the Schwineschnitzle with german potato salad and red cabbage. First bite the schnitzle breading tasted sour. I know some use lemon on their meat when preparing it so I went for bite 2 same thing. Hmmm now to try the rest of the plate. The potato salad was sweet like they had poured sugar in instead of salt. The red cabbage was mush and cooked way too long. I told the waitress and she more or less shrugged it off. My husband and sister in law ate their brats and sauerkraut but the onions were too think and not pickled long enough. Oh boy what to do? So I spoke to the manager who handled it and gave us a percentage off the ticket. I just wanted that schnitzle so bad and still wanting one. Epic disappointment!! read more

Our server, Courtney, absolutely made our wine tasting experience. Her expertise and lighthearted demeanor taught us newbie wine drinkers a thing or two. The wine is as expected for Missouri wines, I will say the selection at Stone Hill is much more expansive than others in the area. This place is huge with so many indoor and outdoor places to sit. We went there for the experience and while we weren't thrilled with the wines, we did decide to buy a couple of bottles. We asked them to be accommodating as we paid for the most expensive VIP wine tasting they gave us stemware which we could not travel with, we asked them to please switch them out for the less expensive wine glasses which travel better. We were met with an emphatic no, by the manager and staff. They said it would mess up their inventory. If I had known that they would be so rude about, I wouldn't have gone there in the first place. This place is amazing. Best wines, best atmosphere, and best people! We had a very nice lunch at the Vintage restaurant I recommend the soft pretzels with spicy cheese dipping sauce. We did a VIP wine tasting it was $15 instead of the $12 for the regular tasting. OMG it was worth it. Our host, Chris, was phenomenal! He knew so much about the wines, the process, and seemed to really enjoy what he was doing. My recommendation would be to pony up the extra $3, and do the VIP. And ask if Chris is on duty, it is well worth it. The tour was short, sweet, and free. They run four per day spaced out just right. The cellars, and history are very interesting. I would highly recommend this winery, and when I go back to Hermann, I would make this my last stop on the tour. You can spend all day there. read more

We've been to Stone Hill Winery twice now. We stopped in once during the summer while traveling back to KC on a road trip. Then we came again in the fall for Oktoberfest. During this visit we took the guided tour which we found very educational. It's not too long, but enough to really give you an idea of their history and increase your appreciate for the wine. I was always lagging a bit behind to take photos and the guide didn't seem to mind. After the tour is the wine tasting, everyone spreads out around the bar to taste about eight of their wines. They explain each one in detail, you don't have to taste them all if you don't like certain ones. But I suggest even taking a sip to expand your palette and learn the differences in the varietals. I recommend coming either in the late summer, before harvest. This way you'll get to see the grapes on the vine. I loved strolling through the vineyards trying to find the perfect bunch of plump grapes to photograph. This is the perfect place for a picnic. You can buy a bottle from their shop, even buy some cheese, crackers and other snacks. You could also bring a few snacks of your own. Then plop down in the shade, enjoy the scenery, warm breeze and tasty wine. If you come during Oktoberfest, this place will be jammed packed. It's a fun experience, but it's not the best time to try to taste wines or have a relaxing picnic. But the live music and food vendors are nice. If you come then, I recommend buying your wines at the local gas station which is cheaper and you don't have to stand in long lines. In 2013, they let you bring in wine. read more

So, while you're biking the Katy Trail you can make a stop at Hermann and have a picnic on the grounds of the Stone hill winery. Buy a bottle of wine and enjoy the view with someone you love. During Oktoberfest there are trolley cars that will transport you to the winery so that you don't have to bike up the steep hills. If you don't want to pack a picnic lunch, then try the Vintage restaurant. Either way, it's a wonderful way to wile away a glorious autumn day. read more

What the hell! A winery in Missouri! It must be crap! Wrong! Actually, Stone Hill Winery is located in Hermann Missouri which is a German settlement. They specialize in varietals native to Missouri such as Newton. Newton...what is Newton? It is a grape and this particular wine from this winery is well respected. I came here once when heading from KC to St. Louis and I saw the signs and my curiosity got the best of me. In town with the Lady for a fun weekend and decided to check out Stone Hill Winery. So charming. We ate, we took the cellar tour (a must) and we sampled wine. First of all the view from the hilltop is excellent. You get a wonderful view of Herman that makes a great pictorial backdrop. Take the free cellar tour. Our guide was a treat to listen to and the history of the place was enjoyable. Lots to look at and learn about. The wine tasting was good. Prices were very good. They have 3 tasting rooms all serving the same wine. They just have 3 to keep up with the crowds. The wines were interesting and complex. The servers very knowledgeable about each. Worth the price even if you are not a big wine drinker. We also tried their restaurant and that was kind of a fail. Still only feel we can take a star off the visit for it as the rest of the place as excellent. The Good Great History. Fun and interesting free cellar tour. Great views. My mom and I visited Stonehill Winery for Octoberfest. We paid $5 each for the wine tasting, and I think $1 for something else. The tour was brief. It reminded me of walking through an ancient castle.The tour didn't last long but I loved the ancient cellars and history involved. The wine tasting was $5. We were presented with either a dry list of 5 wines or a sweet list of 5 wines. Frankly, I had no idea which I like so I chose sweet. We were given very little information, and tiny sips. $5...in Branson it's free than they atleast answer your questions. I bought the Kolada wine, but asked about some wine I had at Stonehill in Branson. The front desk people seemed vague and with little information. While I'm glad I got to visit Stonehill in Hermann, I feel no reason to return...one thing we did score was a ride from our car to the tour area on a cart. read more

The location is really pretty. From up here you get a great view of the town and valley of Hermann. There's plenty of parking. The buildings themselves are really pretty and I wish I had enough time to take the full tour. The tasting rooms are well layed out and the little area for sitting after the tour (why only then???) is all encased in glass with lots of tropical plants, very charming in a Victorian Greenhouse kind of way. Big gift shop and the wine displays are well done. I have nothing but high praise for everyone I encountered who works there! Friendly HAPPY group! On a recommendation from friends, we spent an afternoon here. The tastings were $5 for 6 and includes a tour of the outside and cellars. We arrived just as the tour was starting so we went with that first and it was very informative and interesting learning some basic history of Hermann wine country, use of the property during prohibition and their return into the Missouri wine market. On the tour, they also have several vintage barrels and equipment. Our tasting afterwards was super fun and knowledgeable with Brittany. My friends and I went to Hermann last weekend to celebrate my sister's bachelorette party. When we got to Stone Hill, we decided to grab a bite. Upon entering, we knew our group of 12 will need to be split into 2 tables. Their kitchen closes at 2 and it was only 1:07. We saw a couple of tables that were open so we thought we were good. The hostess, Ashlea said she won't be able to accommodate our group because the kitchen closes at 2. She offered to order to go but we declined. While waiting for the trolley to visit the next winery, we saw another big group walked into the restaurant. When they didn't come out, our friends walked back into the restaurant to confirm that the group of 9 was accomodated. It was already 1:20 at this time . When we asked Ashlea her rationale for not seating us, she said we weren't willing to wait and that our group didn't want to be split. Both were lies. The difference between our group and the other group was the color of our skin. If the smirk she gave our group was any indication of any attempt on service recovery, I will not be holding my breath. Over the weekend, myself and a group of friends attempted grabbing lunch at this restaurant. We realized we had a large group and offered to split our group (as the sign requests) to accommodate seating; however, we were told we were not able to be accommodated and that the restaurant due to the size of our group also due to the fact that they would be closing in an hour. As we waited for the trolley we noticed another large group (at least 9 ladies) enter the restaurant 30 minutes before closing. Much to our surprise, they were seated and serviced. When we inquired with the hostess/manager Ashlea as to why they were allowed to be serviced, we were met with a smug dismissive attitude with no attempts to reconcile. I love Stone Hill Winery. The wine and food are good and very inexpensive. I have always had a good time there. For the most part, the workers are super nice. However, I would recommend visiting the winery in the summer and not in the fall. When I went there during Oktoberfest it was just too crowded for my liking. Also, they had the ladies restroom shutdown for no reason. I walked into the restroom from the back entrance accidentally and was yelled at and told that the restroom was broken (this happened at the same time as when one of the site employees flushed a toilet and came out of one of the stalls-- OOPS). The men could use their restroom, but women had to go out back in a dirty outhouse. read more

Not my fave. I don't get the hype of this place... The lines were a mess. You walked in and it was confusing on what to do or where to go...I ended up walking outside and asking the security guard how the lines/tours worked. The bartender in Tasting Room 3 wasn't very friendly either. Maybe because my boyfriend and I weren't part of a Bachelorette party we weren't a priority... The tour was interesting but again, a bit of a mess on where to go/stand/wait to even go on the tour. Larger signs + having someone herd the masses would have been super helpful. read more

After an entire afternoon of trying different wineries in and around Hermann, we ended with Stone Hill and I'm glad we did. This was the BEST Missouri Winery experience I have had. $2.50 a person gets you a really neat tour of the wine cellars (built back in the 1800s) and other buildings from a tour guide who knows her stuff. The tour is probably around 30 minutes and ends in the private tasting room, reserved for the tours. There, you sample about 14 or so of their wines, and the somellier really knows what he's talking about. I like dry wines, and I thought their Norton was good (they don't taste their Cross J Norton, but I imagine if the regular Norton is good, this one is even better). The Traminette was also pretty good -- sweeter, good for sitting outside and sipping during the summer. They just came out with a new line called Jacquesse Kick'n which has one that tastes like pina colada, a berry one and a sangria one. I thought they all were pretty bad, but the sangria one was almost undrinkable. Luckily, they have a lot of other options. All in all, Stone Hill was awesome. 3 weeks ago we were visiting family in Hermann and decided to have dinner at Stone Hill Winery. Seven of us entered the restaurant and were met with a decidedly unfriendly greeting and told that they wouldn't be able to seat us as there was an hour wait. When we suggested two separate tables we were told we couldn't because we would have separate servers (we didn't care). When we suggested adding one chair to the end of a booth we were told, "we don't do that". When I suggest the tables off to the side of the restaurant we were told in what sounded like a shocked voice, "That's the lounge" Really? They'd rather turn away 7 customers than seat us in the empty lounge? When we eventually found a place in town, our server told us our group was not the first to show up at their restaurant with a similar story. read more

There are actually lots of wineries in Missouri and many of them make some really decent and well respected wines. Stone Hill is nice...its doesn't have the best seating in the world...I think the Augusta wineries have better views but its still a good place to go and enjoy a bottle. Also, since their bottles are screw tops, they don't charge you a $2 uncorking fee. What's up with that anyway? They have a restaurant that used to a horse stables and it' provides some interesting and charming seating. The people working there are very friendly. Overall, it's a good place to go. I do wish the semi dry white was a touch drier but that's really my biggest complaint. I mean, it will still get you drunk. read more

We've been to Stone Hill a couple of times. It's got a nice location atop a hill and a good view from the patio. Live music on weekends and a pretty good gift shop. Wines are pretty good as Missouri wines go. The more you like sweet wine, the happier you'll be - no doubt about that. Servers were chummy and made sure folks were tended too. We arrived later in the afternoon, so it was busy, but they kept up nicely. Samples are free. There is a very nice atrium if you choose to enjoy a glass or bottle. read more

Stone Hill Winery sits along the rolling hills of the Missouri River Valley. The location offers lovely views of Hermann, the show vineyard and countryside. My husband and I were in Hermann to sample the wineries and relax. We started at Stone Hill with a wine tasting and a tour of the wine cellars. The tasting offered the best wines of the day. I tasted mostly the award winners of which Stone Hill has many. They are the most awarded winery outside of California in the USA. The show vineyards were currently growing the last crop of Norton grapes. The cellars held mostly Norton, Chambourcin and a Cream Sherry at various stages in the fermentation process. Our guide led an interesting tour. Afterwards we ate at the restaurant on site. Mostly germanic foods like wurst, sauerkraut, schnitzel and some american offering of sandwiches and burgers on excellent breads. read more

NEVER AGAIN! This review is for the Stonehill Winery, comments do not refer to the restaurant, only to the winery itself and only to the owner policies and not to the staff in general. We were shocked when we went to Stonehill Winery in May to find that they were indeed having their wine tastings which pleased us during the shut-down but we were taken aback to be told they were charging TWELVE dollars per person for the tastings but immediately followed it up with "you get to keep the glass". BIG DEAL! Nothing like gouging the customers at a time when you would think anyone coming to the winery at all would be considered favorably. Needless to say, we didn't do the tastings nor will we ever do them again if this price gouging continues. We did buy a case of wine which is our habit to do so when we go to the winery. The wine as stated online was $12.00 a bottle. In the store it was $12.00 per bottle with the customary 15% discount for shopping in the store bringing the total to $136.06. BAIT AND SWITCH: In September we returned to Stonehill. Tastings were still 12.00 per person so we declined, but we told the employee we'd take a case of Chardonel. Imagine our surprise when the price online was $12.00 per bottle but in the store it was $15.29 per bottle with the 15 % discount. In other words, they upped the price $3.29 more per bottle so not only did they basically do away with the 15% discount but charged additional money per bottle. Because we have bought the Stonehill wine for 20+ years, several times a year, we didn't see this discrepancy until we got home. Instead of $136.06 we were charged $173.40. We called to ask if there was a mistake in the charge. We were greeted with hostility from the owner claiming they had lawyers if we wanted to take it further. We couldn't believe this attitude. Once the original owners, Jim & Betty Held, turned Stonehill Winery over to the kids it has become nothing but a warehouse of wine and price gouging to the customer. We filed a complaint with the Missouri Attorney General, Eric Schmitt. We have now increased our allegiance and patronage to Curling Vine (excellent wine, great staff), Adam Puchta (such a rich family heritage) and beautiful Oak Glenn (always a favorite too). Our wine taster was Brittany and new a lot about the wines and helped make our tastings more fun. We would recommend Stone Hill and tour, they also have wine slushies that are really good. read more

My husband and I hit Stone Hill Winery on our anniversary weekend and took the Grapes to Glass tour. It's a special group tour they only do twice a year, so we were lucky that it landed on the weekend we planned to hit Hermann. It's about a 2-2.5 hour tour through some of the buildings and machinery that the normal tour does not go through. Normally, they go to the vineyards, but it was really hot, so we spent more time talking about barreling in the cellar. Throughout the tour, bottles of different wines are stationed for tastings. We had generous pours of Blanc de Blancs (a white, champagne style wine - not my fave, but I'm not into champagnes all that much), Chardonel (can't remember anything specific except that I was glad to have something that could quickly cover up the sparkling wine), Traminette (good, but I've had better), Dry Vignoles (I'm used to sweeter Vignoles, but this was great!), and Vignoles (delish Governor's Cup Award - best wine in MO - winner!). We had the Dry Vignoles with cheese and the Vignoles with pineapple. We also were privileged enough to be able to sample their 2009 Norton out of the barrel. I'm not a fan of Norton, because it tends to be oaked. I hate oak. This, obviously, hadn't been oaking very long though, so I thought it was great. Very cool to try it in the middle of the process! Dave, the Senior Winemaker, was very friendly and informative. He welcomed questions and let things flow as they would. Props to Dave! After the tour, we hit the bar for a tasting of some of the other wines. Let me preface that by the time we got to tasting more wines, I was feeling pretty good and toasty already. I do remember enjoying the Pink Catawba, but I'm usually always a fan of Catawba - yum! The Jacquesse Kick'N Berry was a little too kickin'/in my face. Liked the Steinberg White but can't remember anything else specific. I think I remember doing the Port and Sherry too....whew! It was a lot of wine! Anyway, the building and grounds are beautiful and very clean. They have a nice shop and plenty of places to sit and enjoy a bottle or three with friends. I had been to Stone Hill a few years ago and didn't think much of it besides being less than what I was hoping. This time around, with new vintages, I wasn't disappointed, and if you have the time and money ($25 each - not bad at all!) to jump on a Grapes to Glass tour, do it! read more
