Was impressed with Stone Hill Winery on my recent first trip to Hermann. I had heard good things about the area and was eager to visit and learn more about local grapes, wines, and wineries. Stone Hill did not disappoint. The winery grounds sit atop one of the many scenic hills in town, surrounded by vineyards. The grand old house is at the center of the complex, with the wine cellars underneath. The grounds and the view of the local area are lovely. We opted for the last tour of the day on a quiet Thursday. Of the three wineries we toured, Stone Hill had the best, most informative tour and the most impressive cellars. The guides were friendly and knowledgeable about the wines, the wine-making process, and the accompanying local history. After the tour, we lined up in the bar room for wine tasting. Our server was professional and friendly, and knew a great deal about each wine. (I use wine for cooking as much as drinking, and it was great to talk wine and food recipes with someone so familiar with the wines and who used them at home.) I was not expecting to like so many wines here. I usually drink whites, but found that I liked several of the dry reds and roses, and the port as well. Went home with the snappy, fruity Vidal Blanc; the Dry Vignoles; and the mellow dry red Hermannsberger. Also bought a bottle of the delicious Cream Sherry with a nutty maple flavor. (Can't wait to do some baking with it.) Spent about $45 on the lot and $2 on the tour. Very affordable. My only quibble with Stone Hill Winery was with the Vintage Restaurant (which I also reviewed). Otherwise, the experience was very enjoyable. I feel much more educated and aware of local wines after this trip, and would definitely go back to Stone Hill. read more

This is the best winery in Hermann. The location is good as well; it rests atop a hill in an historic 19th century building. Their Norton (the Missouri state grape) is one of my favorite red wines and their Vignoles (esp. Dry Vignoles) is a great white. Try the Traminette for something a little more sweet. read more

I always look forward to a stop at Stone Hill. The grounds are just beautiful -- I highly recommend the tour -- the tastings are free, and the staff friendly and knowledgeable. This is a very popular winery so be aware that it can become quite crowded. They do have two large tasting rooms but I have seen those overflow on a busy weekend. It's understandable, it can take a bit to work through the extensive wine list. Stone Hill has a bit of something for everyone. Reasonably priced wines from dry to sweet, juices for the kids, local meats and cheeses, candles and other wine-themed decor. They have managed to have all of this and retain their welcoming ambiance, for that reason they will always be one of my favorites. read more

I really enjoy Stone Hill Winery. They have a great variety and have grape juices for the kids to try. They also have a branch store in Branson, MO. The wines I really like are the: Vidal Blanc, Reserve Traminette, Dry Rose, Traminette, Brut Rose, Golden Spumante, Jacquesse Kick'N White, Jacquesse Kick'N Berry, Jacquesse Kick'N Red, Catawba and the Concord (which is basically kicked up grape juice). Their prices are great most under $10. This is a winery he hit every time we are in Hermann, MO. We usually find a B&B stay the weekend and hit this place a couple times while we are there. They have the best tour in town by far. Great guides and lots of info. Beautiful vineyard. They can get crowded so early morning is the best time to go or off-season. Try to avoid on a festival weekend. We end up eating in the restaurant usually at least once each trip. We have always had good service, and the food is good authentic German food, you will have to wait if it is a busy weekend. read more

Feel bad reviewing this visit that occured during the Oktoberfest. Wine was so-so. Coudn't tell you about the food. The festival is full drunken college age kids, with a few middle age or older patrons, awkwardly trying to blend in. The views from the winery were pretty, but the rest of the town is depressing, and dirty (perhaps due to festival). Nothing much else to do, no shops to speak of. Not worth a day trip or an overnighter for me personally. read more

This is my second favorite winery in town. They offer a lovely tour of their wine cellars, and give a rich history of the winery and what it went through before and after prohibition. Their tasting is not as great as some of the other local wineries as you get pretty small pours and can only choose 6 to try our of their extensive selection. Often their bartenders are busy and don't really seem to give much info about the specifics of the wines. But many of the wines are very affordable at less than $10 a bottle! They also have a restaurant on site, which serves very delicious German food. read more

Being bored in cental Missouri is a bad thing. A very bad thing. It makes you drive to breweries and wineries. So maybe that's a good thing. I knew MO had a lot wineries. Missouri doesn't have much, so what it has you know about. My friend lived in Washington, MO at the time, so we decided to drive around and do a little drinkin'. Plus is town goes crazy for Octoberfest, being German and all. There's a few wineries in Hermann. I like this one the best. The people didn't mind they had a couple 22 year olds (so this review is going to be a few years old) in their store. The tours are a lot of fun and the wine is good. It's set in a very pretty part of Missouri. The signs are right off the freeway and it's easy to find. Hermann is a very nice country city with a lot of country folk living there. read more

Service was slow, uninformative, impatient, inefficient, unorganized, and rude. The wine tender did nothing to stop her dirty looks and eye rolling at my party and me. She took forever to get us our next tasting and kept disappearing somewhere. When I saw her opening a bottle, I told her that was one of the ones on my list, thinking it would help make things move along since she was already filling other people's glasses with the same wine. She looked at my sheet and said "you aren't there yet" and walked away, so I waited another 5+ minutes until she decided to come back to my group. Her tone was consistently rude and impatient. We decided to try a tasting on a weekend in October, since we were in Hermann, but they were not prepared for the crowds. There was only one server for most of the time we were in a tasting room until we were almost done. You'd think as large as the place is they could find space to add more tasting areas on the weekends. We were highly disappointed in the service we received the short while we were at the Vintage restaurant owned by Stone Hill winery. My friends and I had planned a weekend to Hermann and planned to eat dinner there last night. We called earlier in the week to make a reservation and were told it would be busy and they would not be accepting reservations, but to come in and we would be sat without one. We arrived at 7:30 and went in to get a table. To our surprise, there was no wait. We were being sat (4 of us) by the kind host, before being stopped on the way to the table by the manager, Samantha, and told they could not serve us due to the kitchen being "an hour backed up" though the sign on the front door showing they stopped accepting guests at 8:00. Samantha cost this place numerous visits back. This is no way to treat the customer. We went down the road to a Bistro and had an excellent dinner. I would recommend skipping Stone Hill and going there instead. read more

We've been here a few times now and always have a great time. They have a great wine tasting room and the tour is fun and short. The grounds are gorgeous. In my opinion, the restaurant has some of the best German food I've ever tasted. I lived in Germany for 5 years as a child and have been back a few times in my adulthood. I don't think I would ever pass through Hermann without having some schnitzel at least once. I also love their Reserve Vignoles. read more

The Vignole...the Hermannsberger, try them all. We drive out to the cute little town of Hermann to the top of the hill to visit the winery and attend Wurst Fest the last weekend of March every year. Local butchers sample their goods and the libations flow steady from the sample room. We usually buy a few cases to last us until the next visit, but it never does. read more

This was my first wine tasting experience within the United States and it was Missouri of all places! The tours are very reasonably priced, tastings free, bottles relatively inexpensive, and it's a big place with its own parking (much better than the rest of Hermann). We went on an Octoberfest weekend and had wonderful live music and German cuisine (brats, sauerkraut, potato salad, and homemade applesauce). The tasting was very fun though the grapes that can grow in this region are not all to my taste. I'm not a big wine guy so some of the sweeter especially artificial flavor offerings were barely palatable. They definitely have more whites than reds. So the tasting is free but you do have to drive all the way out to Hermann. Then if you do take advantage of all they have to offer, who is supposed to drive home? The trains come out here and I would highly recommend them. There is entirely too much driving after drinks in this country. Check it out! Cool city and stone hill is nice in that it is a little out of town and with plenty of beautiful views and room to breathe on busier Hermann weekends. read more

Just when I was losing my faith in Missouri wineries I visited Stone Hill this past weekend while in Hermann. Driving up the hill to get there you can see it is an impressive structure allowing a beautiful view overlooking Hermann. There is a definite energy from the parking lot, to the gift shop, to the tasting room that people are having fun and enjoying the wine. There isn't a better bargain to be had in Hermann either because the tour, which was really fabulous, cost $2.50 and the tasting was totally free. Matt, a young buck who didn't look old enough to drink wine himself, led our tour through the venerable cellar, and wowed us with his wry wit. I learned some history of Stone Hill Winery, and of Missouri wine from Matt and got a few laughs at the same time. He led us back to the tasting room which was set in an old fashioned looking bar with one energetic young man pouring samples for about 25 people. He handled the situation with finesse and earned himself some much deserved tips. I think the winery was perhaps a bit understaffed, but this was handled well by the young man pouring for us. The important thing to address in this review, due to the fact that this business is a winery, is the wine. I was very impressed by the selection and variety offered by Stone Hill. There were so many sparkling, bubbly, champagnesque, wines offered that I could have stopped there. (But I didn't) Having visited Schramsburg in Calistoga and taking their tour I learned the work that goes into making this type of wine and Stone Hill had a number of impressive sparkling wines. (Brut Rose, Blanc de Blancs, Golden Spumante and Spumante Blush) I also tried some whites, reds, another rose that I liked and a port. Pretty much every wine I tasted here was above average to great. We left with 4 bottles to take with us, mostly of the sparkling wines. The gift shop also had a lot of snacks available if one wanted to hang out and drink their purchases. Unfortunately the day we visited was cold and windy so we didn't stay but will definitely next time! Stone Hill is by far the finest winery in Hermann and a very good value on top of it. Not my favorite Hermann winery, but not bad. We came in for our tasting at the tail end of a bachelorette/wedding party tasting, on top of it being later in the day, and I felt like the guy who was helping us was just done. No charge for the tasting, which was unlike the other wineries we visited. Stone Hill has a very large selection of wines, and, as much as our server seemed over it, he did give us tastings of whatever we wanted. The setting is gorgeous, with a really nice view of the town. Stone Hill helped us make our anniversary magic and it is now one of our favorite spots. This was our last stop on the wine trail and they gave us their kick n berry wine along with a brushetta. The wine was delicious and we decided to come back the next day to search the grounds further. Steve was our tour guide and we had a private tour and tasting which was great. He was very knowledgeable and took us in the Norton grape fields and behind the scenes. Upon our tasting room he gave us suggestions and allowed us to try as many as we wanted. We bought a few for our collection, as well as a glass to commemorate our experience. The tour and tasting were $5, not bad considering what you got. I see that others posted it was $2.50 so now I'm curious as to why ours was pricier however we were there on a wine trail weekend so that may have played a part. Stone Hill winery in Herman MO is a class act. Between live music, wine tastings, complimentary tours, vast accommodations & an award winning restaurants - what is not to like? I've been here twice now & can say beyond a doubt that I will be returning. The first time it was incredibly busy & the tasting was complimentary. The second time was over the Fourth of July & it was a ghost town. The tasting was no longer free but for five dollars it wasn't breaking my bank. I completely understand charging people for it because there are always those out there taking advantage. Shameful. Since my boyfriend & I were the only people on the grounds we almost skipped the tour but I'm glad we did not. The history of Stone Hill is very interesting & our guide was extremely informative. He asked if we wanted to do the tour since it was just us & we said yes but did inform him he didn't have to be as formal as he normally would. I suggest everyone who hasn't takes this tour. I have to mention how beautiful the property and view is from the hillside. Worth stopping by even if you aren't a wine drinker. Now the only thing I need to do is try the restaurant on site as you bring your purchased wine bottle to dinner. How genius is that? read more

Covid restrictions are mostly being followed, with exception of the restaurant. The restaurant was not following any of the safety guidelines. Disappointing, so we left. The rest of the winery did great and was very orderly! Wine is sweet, so it's good if you like that! Tasting was also orderly and safe. Will I go back? Yes. This was the best winery tour in Hermann. They take you through the cellars and provide a history of the winery while providing excellent descriptions of how wine was made in barrels that held thousands of gallons at the turn of the 20th century vs. the smaller stainless steel containers and barrels of today. In addition there are interesting stories about prohibition and how some of the equipment was spared from the government's ax. The tour concludes with a free tasting that provided ample opportunities to taste the different varieties of wine they produce. As I'm not much of a wine aficionado I will leave those particulars to those who are other than to say they have something for everyone. As far as the winery itself, I think it's amazing! I highly recommend the 30 minute tour which includes the wine cellars of this mid-19th century establishment. If you are a photographer the buildings and property offer wonderful opportunities even if the tone has seriously encroached on what previously had been a rural location. My wife and I on our 5th anniversary came to Hermann for a BnB and of course the wine tour. This place is pretty good. 6/10 is my rating for the experience. We didn't go on the tour, just the wine tasting. We had a fantastic host for our tasting named Ray, older gentleman with a hilarious wit, bursting with personality!! The wine all tasted a bit similar and flat to me which was disappointing. It was definitely drinkable but only earned the 6/10. Views were great and it's definitely worth a visit, hopefully Ray is working the tasting! read more

My first love will always be California, and so I remain partial to wineries in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. Missouri wine country is absolutely splendid as well, however, and Stone Hill remains the jewel of Hermann just as it has been during generations prior to and after the dark days of Prohibition. Perched high on a hilltop overlooking the quaint town, the winery is surrounded by fragrant vineyards, and the living vines perfume the air during the Spring as they are renewed...and then again as the crisp days of Autumn bring the harvest. I enjoy a sweet, medium bodied wine, and a number of the wines produced by Stone Hill are the best in Missouri. Indeed, they are the best American wines I have experienced outside of California. I recommend a visit, so that those who may be curious can discover for themselves the charm of Missouri wine country, and of Stone Hill winery. We loved the picturesque setting here and the amazing history of the winery. We enjoyed our tasting and our exceptional hostess. She shared history about the winery and poured according to our preferences. The wines were quite good, although different grapes than here in CA where we live. The tour was great! Lots of history and character. Cool underground cellars, steel tanks, wooden casks, and even remnants of an old bottling operation. The tasting room was not so great. It was super crowded, and there seemed to be no system for dealing with the line at the door. Tasters squeezed in where possible, two or three deep, and the single tasting room staffer attended to tasters in roughly a clockwise manner. So slow! So small a pour! I know a tasting room is not a bar. But given the fact that the sales floor is right outside the tasting room, you think there'd be a little more encouragement provided for an enlightened purchase. Five dollars for six tasting tokens, and the little measured wine pourer on top of each bottle seemed to put out a thimbleful per glass. What does that amount to? It seemed like perhaps ¼-oz. to me. Thirty minutes into this experience, I'd received five Barbie-doll-sized tastes, and didn't wait for the sixth. The tour was great fun. As I learned later, many of the white and sparkling wines are good. But I'd rather taste from a plastic cup in a grocery store than go through the tasting room experience again. read more

Worth the trip to Hermann. The tour was free and rich with history, absolutely beautiful space. Our tour guide was awesome too, very knowledgeable and funny! We then decided to do a tasting afterwards in the tasting room. $5 each got us 8 samples and we learned a lot about the wines we were tasting. They were absolutely delicious compared to another winery we went to in Columbia. They also had major discounts to purchase wine afterwards which we did. Went to Hermann for the first time last week -- definitely won't be our last trip! We stopped at three wineries and did two tastings. I loved how Stone Hill let you select the 6 wines you wanted to try to fit your taste. Kyle did our tasting and he was fabulous! He was great dealing with our crazy group AND provided great recommendations for 5 people with 5 different likes and dislikes. I would highly recommend Stone Hill! Monday night in Hermann means most restaurants are closed so we felt fortunate find Stone Hill Winery open till 8. We arrived around 7:30 and found few people there. The Chardonelle wine was excellent as was my wife's salmon. I ordered the goulash special. Two problems. The noodles under my goulash were not fresh. Tough and tasteless. And the sourkraut side was not sour. They gave us $3.00 off the tab which was nice. The moral to the story don't go in close to closing time and order the special. read more

The grounds are beautiful. They had live music playing in the gazebo and this place was packed. We were traveling with our two Labs and they went everywhere with us mostly because it was too hot to leave them in the car. The white wine is really great and it was so nice to sit outside and picnic. I wish they had more food offerings in the winery because the restaurant at the winery would not do take out. I was excited to order food from the Vintage after reading the awesome reviews. Traveling with dogs we couldn't dine in and the restaurant did not have a patio. After my experience of trying to get take out from the Vintage Restaurant I would never spend a penny there anyway. I would bring my own food and buy wine from the winery instead. Don't need any more encounters from the most rude lady I met at the Vintage. So skip the Vintage restaurant, pack some bread, Havarti cheese, and prosciutto and have a nice picnic on the beautiful grounds and buy your favorite bottle of wine from the Stone Hill winery. read more

Well, we were expecting great things since the location is Branson was so wonderful, but unfortunately we didn't get that same bit of satisfaction from this location. The grounds were beautiful, which is why it gets two stars. The view was simply wonderful. The staff was...indifferent. We walked from the train depot to Stone Hill, which was about a mile and a half or so, and when we arrived we grabbed a bottle of wine from inside to drink and relax before stocking up and trekking back. While we were there we took in the view and caught our breath. Upon finishing the bottle we decided to head back inside and see what they had to offer. The staff simply ignored us. A large party had just left on a tour bus, so maybe the staff was catching their breath as well, but when we walked outside we walked by four employees holding a personal conversation. I smiled at them and said, "Have a good day" and received absolutely no response. My wife even noted to me how rude she thought they were. This was not expected, and I'm sure every place has bad moments/days, but c'mon, at least pay enough attention to the patrons in your store to respond to them when they make a direct comment to you. I will steer away from Stone Hill next time we are in Hermann, but that's OK, there is plenty else to see in this little Germantown Gem. read more

We took a day trip here from St Louis, and it was our first time in Hermann. Stone Hill Winery is situated a mile or two outside of the small town on a steep hill with a very pretty view. Approximately 2 acres of the grapes being grown can be seen from the winery. We went with friends during Wurstfest and enjoyed free German sausage tastings at the Pavilion. It's ordinarily $6/person, but we were there for the final hour it was open, so it was free. The sausage was great, and we debated over our favorites and each bought some (I went with the Cajun Sausage). We took the tour of the winery. It's $2.50/person. Our tour guide left a lot to be desired in terms of mannerisms and voice, but was informative and nice, and seeing the cellars was really cool. I'd never been to a winery before, and the barrels are a sight to see. We were guided through 4 or 5 rooms providing a history of the winery and totally hating on prohibition. The tasting at the end of the tour is great with a menu covering over a dozen wines. If you want to try any particular wine that isn't on the tasting menu, they'll still go ahead and serve it to you. They'll even make you wine spritzers. Just ask! They provide paper and pencils to take notes on the wines. We wrote things like "sweet", "dry", "good with dessert", "Mom would love this", etc. The majority of the wines we tried were very sweet, even too sweet, but we chose our favorites. For our particular visit, if you bought an unbroken case (12 of the same bottle), it was 33% off. If you bought a broken case (12 of anything - mixed and matched), it was 20% off. We had checked our favorites during the tasting, went with the ladder, and split it up within our group. This is the only winery we visited in Hermann, and we chose it because it's the most-awarded winery (and participated in Wurstfest). I don't have much to compare it to, but we had fun for sure. read more

The five stars are for Stone Hill's 2008 Norton. On a road trip back East we took along a selection of Kansas and Missouri wines as house gifts. It seemed like a good idea to bring something they were unlikely to find back there! The wines we took were well received, but the star of the trip, by far, was the Norton. We broke it out in New York, with some old friends who are great wine snobs! I had never tried it myself and we all found it a real revelation! This is a practically inky wine with enormous flavor and bouquet and layer upon layer of complex tastes! I could hardly believe how good it is myself, and our friends were just blown away. They had never heard of Missouri wines nor of its wine history and the grape was completely unfamiliar to them. But they're converts now! Everyone agreed this was one of the most memorable wines they had tasted in a long time and, as I said, these are real NY wine snobs! As you can imagine, this wine pairs extremely well with meats or well-spiced dishes -- it's more than big enough to stand up to strong flavors. This 2008 vintage was extremely drinkable, with little tannin and a velvety mouth feel, but it's clearly the kind of wine that can mature in the bottle for a long time, getting better and better and better! The best part is that this wine is available for less than $20! That's an amazing value for a wine of this quality! Buy plenty for yourself, but if you're looking for a gift for friends elsewhere you will have the same reaction, I think, if your friends are wine lovers (snobs or not)! And it's obviously great fun to show folks that we have some great things to be proud of here in fly-over country! read more

We visited Stone Hill last weekend and, as always, the food in their restaurant was excellent. We then went to the winery for a tasting. We have been there before and have always greatly enjoyed the experience, mainly due to the wonderful presentation given by Ray. He has always provided a funny and informative program and made sure all of his guests felt welcome and special. Unfortunately, we were told Ray no longer works there. I found out later that he was let go due to some disagreement with new management. That is very unfortunate since the winery has lost a great ambassador of good will. The tasting we did attend was informative but actually rather boring after having experienced Ray's version. read more
