Stone Mountain Vineyards is one of the most beautiful views in Virginia!! They have delicious wines, and Jim and his wife Deanna are so friendly. The venue is absolutely gorgeous, prepare for an adventurous ride up the mountain. The scariest drive ever! The winery and view were spectacular! Especially loved the boxer puppies running around the winery. The trip down was pretty scary too, but at least I was able to follow someone down. The wines were excellent! read more

I visited this winery a few weeks ago with some friends and found it to be one beautiful place. It's not handicapped friendly at all. Lots of steps and the bugs my GOD bugs you can't breath because one will go in your mouth, nose, ears etc. The road is so scary and so tight you feel like you're going to roll of the cliff. The owners were not very friendly, the lady was friendly than the man. I experienced them pouring larger tastes for some than others when we all paid the same for the tasting. The wine is not all that good. I bought one bottle. When we were ready to leave the lady tried to scare us to death telling us about the bears and I certainly did not appreciate that. A friend and I went up to the vineyard yesterday to taste because I had never been before and it was less a than wonderful experience. The pours were a third of a standard wine tasting pour and our server was not very friendly. I believe that the wines had potential of being good and had we been able to taste a standard pour, we may have bought a few bottles. I was also disappointed that there was no industry discount, and that we were both charged a full reserve tasting price when we were not given a full tasting. Overall it was a very disappointing trip and I most likely will not be returning any time soon, nor would I bring more friends to visit Stone Mountain. read more

Spectacular view, wasn't very busy even on a perfect spring day. The road commentary has been beaten to death. Just be very careful, but do consider avoiding if the area received significant rain fall recently. After a white knuckle ride up a 2 mile 1 lane gravel road we were greeted by the most non interested wine pourer I have ever encountered. She could have cared less that we forfeited half of an afternoon to find their vineyard and then drink mediocre wine. The view was spectacular and the dog who greeted us the only saving grace. The venue is amazing and the views are spectacular, but we brought our car when we should have brought the SUV. Don't bring any vehicle you don't want to get covered in dust or mud if it's rained. The road to it is a dirt road and is long, narrow, rough, and that was the recommended road according to their site (there's apparently a worse road!?). There should be more of a warning on their website. Even the parking area sucked. As we were leaving, a woman in her car had to try a couple times to get out of the parking area because it's rough and steep and she was spinning. I understand that there's not much they can do about the road, but they can make the parking better, and put a better warning about the road on their site. If we had known, I wouldn't have brought my freshly detailed car. All that being said, the staff was great and the food was fantastic, but getting there really took away from the expierience. read more

We made the "mistake" of following the GPS to the vineyard. It ended up being a fun, mud road up the mountain. I wouldn't recommend doing it without 4wheel drive. The building itself is pretty with a great view of the vineyard. Unfortunately there was a ton of fog and we weren't able to see much. For $7 you can taste all the wines. Out of the about 12 wines we tried 2 were decent. Two young girls (one was 19) were in charge of the tasting had the same spiel for each wine and seemed generally uninterested in the wine. In all the most fun was the drive up the mountain. read more

We have visited this vineyard twice over the past 18 months and have had a great experience both times. The view is absolutely fabulous and the wines are enjoyable. The comments from other reviewers regarding the drive to the vineyard are definitely accurate. The road is very steep and narrow, but the view from the tasting room is well worth the difficult drive. I would rate Stone Mountain "Five Stars", but the service was average to below average on both of our visits. read more

Didn't think we were going the right way but the road wouldn't allow us to turn around. Once you get to the top the view is absolutely worth it. The wines were great and because of the high elevation we were able to enjoy grapes not usually grown in Virginia. Excellent way to spend your day. read more

Absolutely gorgeous view and very tasty wines! It's a bit of a hike but well worth the effort!

We decided to visit another vineyard during our stay in the Shenandoah valley & even though we saw some info describing a long dirt road & the location not being GPS friendly we headed for Stone Mountain. Out GPS did take us there accurately and we did find the two mile narrow dirt road with the switchbacks and blind turns - but it was absolutely worth it! The view was worth a Million Dollars! We showed up very close to closing but were greeted warmly and as though they had been waiting just for us. The flights were excellent and reasonably priced, and the knowledge of the staff was thorough. In the end we bought a bottle of 2011 Merlot that has a hint of black cherry & at the suggestion of the staff we nibbled on small pieces of chocolate between sips that sparked the imagination. If you have the opportunity don't miss out on this wonderful vineyard! read more

Just not worth the trip. I've been to over 100 wineries in Virginia so far and this will definitely be on the "not worth the time" list. The road up is as bad as the worst reviews say. I have a Civic with automatic transmission (don't even think about doing this road with a standard, you'll never make it) and I was truly worried at several points that we wouldn't make it up. I was down to first gear and going about 6 mph and just praying that I'd get there. Upon reaching the top, there's a steep staircase made of gravel and railroad ties to get down to the tasting room. The tasting associates, to be kind, weren't very interested in us -- and we were literally the ONLY two people at the tasting bar when we arrived. The pours are exceptionally skimpy. You really couldn't even TASTE the wine with the size of the pours. I have never been to a place with such small pours. The regular tasting is $5.00 and the expanded (with several more reds) is $10.00 and includes the glass. Frankly, the extra money for the expanded tasting isn't worth it, as the extra wines aren't that great and are really overpriced. The view, as others have said, is amazing, but I've seen views from other wineries that I enjoyed just as much with better attitude from the employees and better wines to drink. Taste these wines at festivals as you see them, but spend the time going elsewhere. read more
