Staff is always nice and prompt and they have been able to see me on short notice, making room in their schedule when they can. I have had many billing issues but it was NEVER their fault, it was all with my insurance which I have investigated and found to be fact. It had to do with replacing early crowns done by another dentist some 9 years ago and my insurance has some clause that a crown must be 10 years old before they cover the replacement, even though my crowns had to be replaced as they were failing. Dr. Schelin helped me to argue the reason for the crown replacements with insurance but the fine print is the fine print. I do not hold any responsibility against Custer Star for those issues. They were excellent help. Dr. Schelin and Kristy Pecina are great as is the front office staff. I do not have any experience with the other dentists or orthodontists in the office so I cannot comment on them. I can't speak to the other reviews on here where people have had negative experiences other than to say I have had crowns, a root canal, fillings, and my bi-annual cleanings with no regrets. It is always a pleasure working with their team.

After her cleaning was done by her hygienist, the hygienist mentioned changing insurance policy and rates. Upon enquiring at checkout, the receptionist mentioned that our insurance Aetna was dropped by the doctor. My wife proceeded to ask her why she was not informed of that before her appointment with the receptionist answer was that Aetna does offer out of network services and and that my wife should be fine. This is totally unprofessional behavior and and we would've hope that they would've let us know before the appointment for.

At my cleaning appointment on 7/7/26, I was told they would also be taking X‑rays. At checkout, I was charged $97. When I asked why, I was told these were my "every 3‑year X‑rays." I reminded them that my insurance covers that. After checking, they admitted my 3‑year X‑ray would not be eligible until 8/8/26 -- 31 days later. They performed it too early. The office should have verified my eligibility before doing the X‑ray. I called on 7/14/26 and spoke with Annissa to request a refund. She said she would call me back that day or the next. She did not call either day. On the third day, at 3:20 PM, I called again. She told me they would "honor" my refund request, as if it were a favor. She then tried to justify doing the X‑ray early by saying they "needed to do it." When I told her they should have waited until I was eligible, she doubled down and insisted it was a necessary diagnostic X‑ray. I told her I am not arguing about whether it's necessary -- I simply do not want X‑rays performed before insurance eligibility. She then said she would put in my chart that I "do not want diagnostic treatment," which is not what I said. That was twisting my words. She ended the call by saying I would receive my refund. As of today, I still have not received my refund.

Going forward I thought I would be receiving regular cleanings which was not the case. After my first regular cleaning I was told it was not a cleaning but was considered periodontic maintenance so it was not covered by my insurance and I had to pay out of pocket. The activities they completed were exactly the same as I've received from other dentists that were considered a cleaning. I asked when paying why it wasn't considered a cleaning and was told all things go forward would always be considered periodontic maintenance and nothing ever from that point would be considered a cleaning as I had a deep clean in the past. I told them I didn't agree with that and they asked if I wanted to speak to someone higher up in the office, the receptionist was very calm about this which tipped me off that this happens all the time. I let them know I would be going elsewhere going forward and cancelled my future appointments.
