We held my daughter's 10th Birthday party at Stoneworks. It was, perhaps, the best kids party I've been to. While the party room left quite a bit to be desired, the climbing activity and coaching more than made up for it. The focus of the evening, after all, was on climbing and fun, not on cake and ice cream. Derek and Patty were awesome climbing hosts, belaying, encouraging, and coaching 10 young girls for 90 minutes of unforgettable funs. Most of the girls had never climbed before and a few were doubtful they would when they arrived, but by the time we left, all of the girls were laughing and smiling as they challenged themselves to do things they never imagined they could do. Seeing them have fun and gain confidence was the best gift of the evening. read more

Staff seem very friendly and upbeat. Price is good. The rental shoes are clean and not too worn out. The bouldering walls are short with very few options for beginner-intermediate routes. The ones I did find all started in the same scrunched position and offered very little variety of movement or mental puzzles - it was all upper-body (particularly hand) strength and long leg reaches with nothing to ease into it or warm up your muscles. Everyone was in everyone's way. The labeling system is almost chaos. I spent so much time just trying to memorize the color system, read the wall and dodge out of people's way that I got fed up and left after sending only two unsatisfying routes. Maybe the belay routes are good. I didn't try them, but that might be what this place does well. read more

My family and I visited the gym completely new to rock climbing. It's clean and pretty big (but it's also the first one I've ever been to). Our 9-year old daughter really enjoyed the auto belay spots (there were 5 when we went in Feb) which we all found helpful as beginners. The only reason for the lack of a star was because they didn't explain much of the details to us so we were uncertain of how to use the non-auto belay areas (probably not a problem for experienced climbers but we could've used some layman terms). And no one offered us chalk which we found out could be rented for $2 after we asked. But ultimately a good experience for all of us newbies!! I highly recommend them! read more

I have some opinions on the climbing, which is why I didn't quite give them the full 5 star review, but read on to find out why. Good location in an industrial setting. Close to the freeway. Small tight parking lot, though. I'm going to assume most people park on the street. Day fee is CHEAP, compared to CA gyms. Day pass is $11 // Student day pass $10 There is a definite community here. You're not just a number at the gym, people talk to you. They have a lot of events centered around this tight knit community. We met Juan who works the shop upstairs and he was seriously the nicest and most genuine person we've met in a long time. He welcomed us to Beaverton/Oregon and wrote down a bunch of places to check out since it's our first time visiting. He took the time to talk to us and made us feel a part of the community. We really appreciated that and his insight on the place and nearby climbing spots. I described the facility as 'unique' because I couldn't find a more accurate word to describe it. It's got both rope and boulder routes. They go by colors for climbing categories, which I REALLY like, so you enjoy the climb more than putting a number on it. I didn't really see a good area for weights or training, so its not really accommodating those that want to work out in that way. Cool shop and hang out area upstairs though! Bathroom is really small. There's one urinal and stall... I'm not entirely diggin' the routes though. Some routes were easy to read and a good challenge, but most of the routes I encountered were too reachy for some 'low' rated categories. Generally, I climb around V5/V6 routes indoors, and almost all the routes require a lot of upper body strength. It could be that there's not a lot of people around my height setting the routes. They do have a lot of circuits, so I noticed a lot of people traversing and doing that. They also offer high ball problems in a separate room. If you're training for Bishop, this would be helpful. Their pads aren't my favorite either. I feel like I'm going to have my knee bounce and hit my face when I fall from some of the higher walls. I really do like their overhang problems though. They change the routes every couple of months to keep those who keep coming interested! There are auto belays which I love because it doesn't take away from my partners time traversing but I can still go on to belay. Everyone is truly friendly, employees and other climbers and help one another reach that next step to finish a route! Not a climbing gym, mostly bouldering. Staff was ridiculous. I came with my own equipment as an experienced climber but was failed on my belay test and had to leave after paying for a day pass (times two people) because I was unfamiliar with their gris gris device. A half decent staff member would have show me the device I was unfamiliar with and at the very least allow me to practice or try again. I would never return to this tiny hole in the wall. read more

I've been going here for far too long not to have reviewed it. This isn't the biggest and most flashy climbing gym in Portland, but I think it's hands down the best value and best atmosphere. If you're a beginner, they will take great care of you. For 40 bucks, you get the beginner class and a months pass to the gym. I even think the shoe and harness rentals are free in that first month too. Monthly passes are 40 bucks, way cheaper than the other gyms in town. I usually go for the 10 time punch card since I make 2 times on a good week and that's only 65 bucks. The gym is laid out pretty nicely. I mostly go there to boulder, but they have plenty of top roping and lead climbing if that's your thing. There are also a good variety to the routes with plenty of stuff for beginners and seasoned climbers. The one thing they don't do is post the rating of the routes, and I kinda like this. All too often I wouldn't try something because it was rated too high and I felt I wasn't ready. Not rating the routes makes me try damn near everything. The other thing they have that I love is the traverse. It's a route that snakes all around the gym and back , it really tests your skill and endurance. They swap it around often enough that you never get bored. The staff here is super friendly and very helpful. None of the snark you may experience at other climbing gyms. There's no loud music, just some nice mellow stuff playing in the background while you climb. Very family friendly, but there aren't children just running wild. Just a cool laid back place. read more

First, to be honest, it was their reputation and our previous experiences there that led us to reserve the gym for my son's eighth birthday party. The parties I'd attended with my kids were a blast. The staff is great. For a party of 10 kids, they'll have two people on staff to get everyone fitted for shoes and harnesses, secure ropes, and belay the climbers. (If you've ever paid a business for a child's birthday party, you'll know that $100 for 10 kids is a steal!) Having two climbers at a time usually keeps things going pretty well. The other kids are either waiting in line and yelling encouragement to the climbers, or running around and doing some free climbing (the rule is they cannot climb higher than their height). As a parent, it's incredible to stand 30 feet below your (fully secured) child, watching them hesitate and calculate their next move, pause as they get nervous, then reach out and climb a little higher. All that being said, we had the place reserved for 10:30 am on Saturday the 15th, and no staff showed up. Some of the kids left with their parents, while a few of us found a bench at a Beaverton park to sit, cut the cake, and dish out ice cream while the kids played in the fountain. Someone from the gym called later that afternoon, and agreed to refund the non-refundable deposit. To be honest, we probably would not rule them out for future events, but would be more insistent in the quality of their bookkeeping. read more

The one employee I interacted with was great. She was friendly and explained things patiently. I'm a beginner at climbing, so the place was big enough for me. It was also too difficult for me. It would be nice if they offered some easier climbing areas for beginners, like walls that are not completely vertical. The prices are expensive if you don't know what to expect and end up not being able to do anything. Oh, and the place is kept cool, so I recommend wearing long sleeves and maybe a jacket too. read more

This is a cool gym. At first, I thought it was too small as I used to work out at Club Sports in Tualatin. But, they have really cool routes and it's the most affordable rock gym in Portland metro area. Why spend $100 or more for a 10 punch flash pass elsewhere? For high bouldering, this is about the only game in town. You can boulder up 15-20 feet as they have thick mats for those areas. They have 4 auto-belays which I use quite a bit when I am not bouldering. One is for kids, so it's really 3. They added another bouldering area recently. I think it's a cool little gym and worth checking it out, especially if you want to save some money. Occasionally, it can be bit crowded due to the size, but it has not been a problem for me. read more

This is the most UNSAFE climbing gym I've been to. My daughter is having a party here hosted by Stoneworks, not only do they only have 2 certified instructors here for a kids party ( ages 4-8) but they are letting them free climb and belay walls with only 2 people here who are certified. Kids are climbing walls unassisted because there are not enough people here to watch and ensure safety. I had to step in as a parent with no certification and make sure kids were getting over a wall safely and not falling. The instructors are rude and don't give enough instructions on how to safely use their facilities but then yell at the kids when they "aren't following rules". I WOULD NEVER COME BACK HERE, EVER or recommend this facility to anyone... To me it seems almost illegal and this place should be investigated for safety concerns and or shut down... it's sketchy here. read more

OH MY GOODNESS!!! Soooooo much fun!!! We decided one morning after a mimosa filled brunch that we would just "jump into climbing! Haha get it :) anyways.. It was sooo much fun.. We were not dressed for the occasion but still had a blast.. We borrowed shoes and the guy walked Us through the whole gym explaining everything and the best way to use the equipment! He helped us climb a few times with the ropes before just ditching us! We felt really paid attention to and safe! Everyone in the gym was very friendly and didn't make You feel stupid for not knowing how to do anything! The prices were super super reasonable and I will Deff come back next time I'm in the Portland area!! This is a cool place. Most of the staff are cool. One of them was kind of nasty to my girlfriend and I, but nothing too serious. My biggest complaint (and it is a pretty big one) is that they won't let you use your own belay equipment. Now, this is somewhat understandable for liability reasons. However, they really need to have some sort of exception for people who learned on ATCs and feel safer. Maybe they could offer a free lesson on how to safely use a GriGri. That said, their GriGris look ancient and I'd advise a thorough examining before using them. It would be a bummer for you if their cruddy equipment failed during a climb. Overall it's a decent spot. I'm kind of bummed that it's the only gym in our area, but it's okay for now. read more

This place is a lot smaller than I expected. there's only one kind of small little corridor one medium sized wall and then one larger wall for bouldering but usually it seems to be pretty crowded and there isn't that much space to your own. I've climbed at every gym in the Portland area and a half dozen others around the country and none of them meets the yardstick by which I measure all climbing gyms: Stoneworks! Beginners will find an encouraging, unpretentious atmosphere where they can learn and develop climbing skills. Advanced climbers will find the best training facility imaginable for developing into the hardman/hardwoman you want to become. The staff is great - if you go more than a few times they will know you by name. And the other regulars represent the best part of the climbing community: friendly, genuine folks who are happy to work on a problem or two with you. Bottom Line: One of the cheapest gyms in the country. I climbed here for 5 years before moving to Boston: there may be taller or bigger gyms around. But the high quality of routes and helpfulness of the staff at Stoneworks more than make up for it. In fact, I cry myself to sleep in Boston each night wishing I was still in Portland, climbing here! read more

My hub and I are starting to look at other new places to live in the Beaverton area. Thought the smart thing to do would of course be to discover the local climbing gym, right?? That's what everyone does when deciding where to live, right?? It was nice to have Stoneworks in the area, it's better than nothing, but we really have been spoiled. We are used to 50 & 60 foot walls, but these are only 35 feet. They have a lot of amazing bouldering, and two solid sections for lead climbing, but I think I only saw like 3-5 top ropes in the whole place. Definitely need to get lead trained again. They are adding on a new room, same height, but hopefully it'll add more variety. The staff was nice, and the patrons gave the feeling it was a regulars joint and not so many newcomers. Maybe it's just a super locals secret hideaway, especially since it's nestled behind some industrial buildings. Upstairs they had a couple pieces of aged and well used workout equipment, but since I wasn't expecting any, that was just a bonus. They also have what seems to be a party-rental area upstairs, perhaps for classes too, not sure. Only weird thing was that they don't mark their routes. They have routes as in colored holds etc, but they're not ranked, so you don't know if you're gonna do a 5.5 or a 5.11A. Maybe it's to be more authentic since the outdoors aren't ranked visibly when you get there, but at the same time, we're not outside, so... They say you should be able to tell what the climb will be based on the first few holds, but I'm used to every few clusters of holds being easier or harder than the rest of the whole route, so does that mean each climb is going to be that predictable? I don't know, just being picky, but since it's the only climbing gym in the area, above all we'll be grateful. read more

Nice gym for all skill levels. The staff is awesome, super friendly and knowledgeable. Stoneworks is also an awesome value, especially compared to other posh gyms in the area. for Bouldering routes, they change them often, and there is some really sick stuff to push your limit...or if you are a wimp, like me, there are plenty of easy-ish routes to learn on. The gym can get a little crowded, but there are tons of routes for all levels. The traverse is a nice long route with well over 200 moves to complete. I'd give it 4.5 stars for being the best bouldering gym in Portland, but I would take a half star off for it sometimes being crowded. 4.5 rounds UP to 5...later. read more

TLDR: I have some pretty big safety concerns about this place. I've been climbing in gyms for 7 years and been to multiple gyms in multiple states and never seen anything like this place - and I don't mean that in a good way. I was trained to belay 11 years ago on an ATC. I've used ATCs ever since, and that's what I'm most comfortable with and feel safest with. The few top-rope routes that Stoneworks has set up have been set up with Grigris. I've only ever seen this in one other gym. When I inquired, saying that while I understand the principle of a Grigri I do not have enough experience to feel safe belaying someone with one, I was told that a Grigri operates in a similar way as an ATC - no explanation as to why they used Grigris, if they were actually safer, etc. That's just what they use. When I asked if I could use my own equipment to take someone climbing for the first time, they explained they do not let climbers use their own equipment. I was shocked, as there is an expectation with EVERY other gym I've ever been to that climbers use their own equipment or rent ATCs from the gym. When I pressed the issue further, I was told they had some ATCs stashed in the back that climbers had left behind and I could use one of them if I wanted. I was presented with an old, cheaply made ATC, and advised that my friend and I would need to belay test before climbing, which is standard procedure for gyms. It was my friend's first time, so I looked for a practice rope on which to teach him how to belay and tie in, as is common in every gym I've been to. Couldn't find one. I asked and was told they had no practice area, but we could practice on a route that was already set up (thereby taking one of their few routes out of commission temporarily, when they were already busy). Before teaching my friend anything, I gave the Grigri a shot with my friend pulling on the climber's side of the rope. Even when it was supposed to be locked, some rope still came through. I looked closely at the Grigri and noticed the name and phone number of another gym scratched into it - City Rock, with a 510 area code (East Bay Area, California). (A quick Google search revealed that this gym went out of business back in 2000, so one can only wonder how old that Grigri actually is.) I went back up to the desk, holding both ATCs in my hand. I explained the trouble I was having with the Grigri, how I didn't feel safe with it or their ATC, showed him my personal ATC and carabiner which are less than 5 years old and have seen nowhere near the use their Grigris have, and pleaded again to use my own equipment that I felt safest with. They guy finally said that would be OK, but it wouldn't be the next time. I thanked him, and proceeded to teach my friend how to tie in and belay. I signaled the guy at the desk when we were ready for him to test. In anticipation of the what was coming next, I tied in as a climber and my friend went on belay. The guy came over, glanced at our setup, and said it looked OK. After a pause, I asked, "... Do you want to check his method and make sure he can belay?" The guy said, "Uuuhh sure! Go ahead and start climbing." I was shocked again - he was going to test my friend's skill in belaying WITH ME IN THE AIR. Not that I'm a bad teacher, but that's a BIG gamble on the part of the gym, assuming that I taught him right. We then switched places, and I again had to prompt the guy as to how to test us. Pretty unprofessional. Those are just the safety issues (except for the fact that the rental harness my friend received was fraying and the crash pads in the bouldering areas were either fraying or of differing thicknesses or bolstered with mattresses). The whole gym also had quite a pattern of a lack of professionalism in everything else. I've never seen a gym that uses neither the Yosemite system or the Hueco scale. When I asked about the difficulty of the routes I was directed to a chart with concentric colored circles and told that the color of tape on the routes corresponded to the chart, with the easier routes on the outside of the circle (most of the time the tape that was actually on the routes and problems didn't actually match any of the colors on the chart). So I guess in the rest of the world, I can climb at 5.10A but at Stoneworks I can climb at red. Another problem my friend and I had was that, as I weigh a bit more than my friend, every time he took my weight he would fly up in the air. Every gym I've ever been to has ropes double wrapped around the anchor to increase friction so that doesn't happen, or they have anchor points for the belayer on the ground. The only reason I gave this place two stars instead of one is that my friend and I still had a decent time and still got a decent workout, but because of safety issues, their ludicrous policies against patrons using their own belay devices, their lack of professionalism, and the small size of the gym, I won't be back. read more

I absolutely love this place! Though it is a little small, The routes are extremely fun. They have something for every level of climber. They have 4 to 5 auto belay systems and probably 10 partner belay systems. The bouldering courses are extremely fun! I try to come at least 2 to 3 times a week. read more

The place is small and has decent climbing. Unfortunately they engage in unethical ripping off of customers. I bought a punch card and after coming back after a few month they said I had to use it within 90 days and unfortunately the 4 punches I never used were just gone. They never mentioned the limit when I bought the first punchcard on Groupon - it was not listed in the Groupon description and it is not mentioned on their web site. I never would have bought a punch card if I had known that. They also didn't allow the punch card to be used for another person, which is at least odd, but whatever. I purchased another card for my daughter so we could climb together. Again, no mention whatsoever that there was a time limit on the card. In total I paid for 10 visits and got 2. The staff shrugged their shoulders and basically didn't care and emails went unanswered. All in all an unethical business to avoid. read more
