When we first arrived we thought the place was closed? We were the only car and the only ppl? Where is everyone? Then our host Sean appeared and gave us such a treat! It was a private tasting. We had the place all to ourselves! I was wowed by it! Especially the views where we had our tasting, Just stunning. The wines were on the higher end but given the overall experience it all made sense. I thought they were delicious and I never wanted to leave lol.. I just wanted to stay and drink good wine there all day with that spectacular view beneath that beautiful tree.. but sadly all good things must come to an end. I heard great reviews of this spot and with its unique history and gorgeous views, I knew I needed to have it as a stop along my trip through wine country. It was a bit of a maze to get up the house but they do give you pretty specific instructions. If you are a nervous driver, definitely drive carefully and in the earlier part of the day. We were greeted for our 10:30 tasting and walked up to the car. There was only one other group tasting at the same time as us, so the place feels really quiet and private. We were sat on the side patio and able to see the gorgeous view. I will say there were a TON of bugs circling us the whole time - little gnats and flies all over while we did the tasting. The chairs we sat in too were also a bit "leafy" and would have been nice to have covers on them they could easily sweep off before guests sit. I did realize later when using the restrooms that they did have bug spray available so may have been a nice offer before sitting surrounded with bugs. Our storyteller here was Adam who was quite knowledgeable on all the wines we covered and the wine process itself. They started us with some bubbles then into the red and white. Overall the wines were quite nice but when looking over the membership, I couldn't quite justify it. Adam did do a great job of taking our photos on property after the tasting was complete. Definitely an upscale space but the price of wines to buy just weren't matching my personal preference. read more

I'll preface this by saying we fly up from LA out of BUR into OAK, rent a car and drive to Napa. It's always a super simple, casual little trip. We don't take ourselves or our visits too seriously. If you enjoy wine, in my opinion it should be based strictly on your palate and what taste good to you. We aren't a pretentious pair in town for long visits but do fly up several times a year to relax, taste around (run a marathon on occasions) and enjoy yummy dining options in the area. With that being said, I do however fall into my creature of habit self and revisit many places that I love which is quite nice but on this trip specifically a friend of mine from Chicago had just been in town with his wife and I'd asked him for some recommendations. Sometimes it seems silly asking for recommendations as often as I visit but I really love hearing what others think about different places, value his opinion and enjoy taking the opportunity to explore this region in depth. I will say I rarely, like never ever drink white wine and I didn't exactly do my research on Stony Hill I just felt very comfortable with my friends recommendation and scheduled an appointment for us to visit. BEST DECISION EVER. Stony Hill is probably one of the loveliest places to date that we've visited in the area and our first on Spring Mountain. The energy is different here. Complete and utter peace and serenity from the moment you turn up their road, which we have been nearby before when visiting Bale Mill and drive by every single time we are in town. Every last thing about the Stony Hill feels like a little slice of heaven, even the short drive up is breathtakingly beautiful. I enjoyed all the white wines we tasted which was a bit shocking to me, because where I don't drink white and if I ever was forced to it would never be a Chardonnay it would be a Sauvignon blanc and I'd be lying if I said I ever sit around drinking Sauv blanc. I typically like very big bold cabs, nothing much lighter and definitely not white wines but that really seemed to change on our afternoon here. I was also very excited to try a Gewurztraminer for the first time. The weather was gorgeous and I haven't been feeling very well the last couple of weeks and something about their white wines really sat really well with me and my system. The entire experience was a pure delight and I'd say if you are in the area for big reds, don't care for whites at all - you'd still be doing yourself an injustice to not visit Stony Hill. I'm an outdoors enthusiast so perhaps, the fresh air, sunshine, chirping birds, trails, cutest little four legged friend on our tour, pool, deck, walking, talking, where all the magic happens areas, trying new lighter yummy wines made in neutral oak barrels just completely did it for me. The experience really could have shaped my opinion but I know if I hadn't cared for the wine it would be extremely apparent to me and that was not the case. The home, the grounds, the garden, the greenhouse, our tour host, I can go on people... but I'll leave you with this. Stony Hill is really special. I'm very much looking forward to revisiting during bbqs and beautiful seasons where we can purchase by the bottle and just hang out and read our books on the lawn. Sarah (our host, not Sarah McCrea) was charming, knowledgeable, and glowed with her love of Stony Hill. I was disappointed to not see her afterwards on the "our team" page of their website, as she is doing so much to spread the love of Stony Hill with visitors. She really made our visit special. Short but harrowing one lane road up the mountain; we were told the visits are timed to make it less likely we'd encounter someone coming the other way, as there's really no way for quite a stretch to make room for two cars. Tasting is in the old McCrea home, very 50s/60s in decor, an unusual, memorable and extremely comfortable tasting setting. Short walk to the way cool historic winery. The winery, with so much original ancient equipment, as well as the fabulous Chardonnay, makes this a must, out of the way, visit. Beautiful views. read more

Our guide Brandon was knowledgeable, patient with our questions and very interesting. Imagine having a sommelier taking you on a private tour of a winery located on the top of a mountain. The location is really interesting. You head up on this winding, remote road for a few miles. Then you pop out in this great setting. Brandon greeted us at the door. We were the only ones there so it was literally a private taste testing. We spent almost two hours asking Brandon every question under the sun about wine and he answered everything with great detail and patience. We visited Stony hill while on a ladies trip with some friends. In the covid era this winery and our host, Alyson did a beautiful job of keeping us distant from other guests (we never even saw the other party who was doing a tasting around the same time as us). Alyson was kind and knowledgeable about the wines and the family history of Stony Hill. All of the wines in our tasting were fantastic - and I'm not a huge fan of all wine. I went home with the semillon de Soliel which was the greatest dessert wine I've ever had. I'll definitely be back to this beautiful gem on the top of a mountain. After the previous owner sold the business, new management fired all of the employees and it really broke my heart to hear that. Now I got the notification by email about them shipping notification. Even though it says they are honoring the loyal discount, the price is already more than what we used to pay. We used to get a shipment 3 bottles per season but for some reason they are shipping 6 bottles with the gauged price without explanation. what a way to treat loyal customer. I think it's fair to say that most wineries in Napa Valley aren't surrounded on all sides by protected park land. Or focused on age worthy white wines sourced from vines first planted when Eisenhower was the President. Not many wineries in the valley will serve its guests Gewurztraminer and Riesling while showcasing old oak barrels and handcrafted touches that speak volumes without saying a word. Chardonnay here is made to last. It turns golden with age, not with oak chips. The concept of old vine wine is usually associated with Zinfandel and other heritage varietals planted by Italian immigrants in California, but here it is linked to Chardonnay, which the founders, the McCreas, planted in the 1950s, and many of these original plantings still grow on the property. They are sustained by a natural underground spring that raises the water table to eight feet, which is easily reached by a mature grape vine. They don't need irrigation; they drink what they need and take up into their fruit unique elements from the rocky soils in which they have grown for more than 60 years. Old vine, dry farmed Chardonnay (the Wente clone, in this case, from the historic Livermore Valley family-owned winery and vineyards) is truly different than most, with a long finish that one typically finds in red wines, and something that wine connoisseurs and somms like to refer to as "flintiness." It's a kind of minerality that you can detect in wine made from grapes grown in stony, often shaley, soils. German Rieslings and some Austrian wines have this quality, as of course do French wines from Chablis and other similar spots. Stony Hill also uses old neutral oak barrels for fermentation and aging that don't perfume the wine with wood, and they prevent malolactic fermentation from converting the wine's acids into the creamy, buttery flavors of most other California Chardonnay. This sharpens the wine's profile into something like a finely cut gemstone, one that gets more luminous and lovely with age. Straw yellow becomes light gold and eventually amber, but the fruit core remains. It's hard to describe, exactly, but if you try two of their vintages side by side, which is part of the tasting experience, you will discover this sensation on your own. Cabernet is the "new kid on the block" here, having been made only for about the last decade, and Syrah has been grafted to vines on the Estate as well, although it will take time for this new red wine (their second) to be available. Wine tastings are quiet things, full of fun stops to sip and see the vines, barrel rooms, and outdoor patio areas with their commanding views of Napa Valley. Time will pass and you will hardly notice. The light in the valley will alter and you will be focused on birdsong or the refraction of sunshine in your glass as a wine five or more years old shifts and shimmers and you will say to yourself: what a wonderful world! read more

Stony Hill will seduce you. It will not be aggressive or assertive. A visit here will be a revelation of the senses. The land is fertile, the property attractive, the views unforgettable. The wines here linger. They lightly tease the palate and tickle the tongue. They make your day special. They invite you in. They make you want to sink into cooling waters, to lose your inhibitions, to connect with the sensual. They are as sexy as wines get, without the crudeness of a strip tease or artificially enhanced excesses of far too many cult Napa wineries. There is nothing flashy about Stony Hill; the vines speak for the themselves, and they do so with a voice that is soothing, soft, and lovely. Are the wines any good? Yes, they are very good, just not what you might expect in Napa. They are, with one exception, exclusively white varieties of continental European origin made in an Old World style rarely seen in California. In the 1950s, Napa made many more white wines than it does now, and Stony Hill's microclimate is perfect for the wines it produces in small amounts each year. While subtle at first, these wines can pack a punch, due to their extraction, not high alcohol level. While gentle, they are still able to seize your attention with the very first sip. Without fanfare, they flout winemaking conventions. There is no way to rate these wines on a 100 point scale, although many have tried. They simply are. Even if you are a dyed in the wool red wine freak who would rather kiss a sheep than drink Riesling, Chardonnay, or Gewurztraminer, Stony Hill will make you a believer! Visits here require advanced planning. You will need to request a time online and wait for confirmation. It will cost a modest fee to tour and taste, around $45 per person. This is money well spent. There are no bad wines here, but you should take home an older vintage Chardonnay if at all possible. The Cabernet Sauvignon, the only red wine currently made, is also excellent, and unusual for Napa for its restraint and cellaring potential. Don't expect fireworks here. The wine here is pedestrian. The only really drinkable product is the dry reisling. There are many much better wines available in Napa and Sonoma. But even worse is the way they treat their own people. Long Meadow Ranch sold the winery to an Arkansas billionnaire Christmas week. Employees were given only a couple hours notice that they were losing their jobs (on the day before Christmas Eve!). If I could give more than 5 stars, this would be the place to do it. For starters, our guide Allison (who became the youngest sommelier in New York City before moving to Napa) was not only incredibly knowledgeable, but was great at imparting that knowledge to every person in our group at a level that made them feel comfortable and welcomed (no snobby Napa vibes here)! It was clear she loves her job- and it showed in her description of the history of the winery, the land and every wine we tried. Allison alone accounted for 5 stars. The property itself is beautiful and the views might be the most breathtaking I've seen in Napa. Lastly the wines- they are known for their whites, so if you're looking for a big 'Napa cab', this isn't the place. While I am not much of a white wine drinker, all of their wines were not only approachable, but honestly very impressive. They're very good at what they do, and they stick to their formula. It seems like the new ownership change has not affected the quality of the wines- or the quality of the experience when visiting. I hope they smartly allow Stony Hill to continue to produce and present these great wines in the way they have for decades. The history of the vineyard is so interesting and the residence on-site has been restored to its 1950s roots. The staff is excellent; Richard did our tasting and he was so pleasant and you could truly see his passion for wine. Unlike other wineries where you feel like they're reading from a script, Richard really gave a wonderful presentation of the history of the vineyard and their wines. what a treat! stony hill is off the beaten path, but well worth the detour up spring mountain. the tasting includes a tour around the property, where you can check out the original house built in the 1940s, the awesome pool (that unfortunately is only used during special events) and the small wine cellar. for the main event, guests are seated at an outdoor table with an amazing view of the valley, and treated to six or so delicious tastings (mostly whites, with a few reds). our tour guide/som was awesome - very knowledgeable and a lot of fun. also, the winery allows dogs, which is always a huge plus. know before you go: reservations are required. the tastings are pretty pricey ($45 per person). also, you should factor in an additional 20 minutes or so to get to/from the winery and st. helena highway. read more

Delicious Chardonnays!! One of the best in Napa. They make it old world style so if you're looking for a creamy heavy Chardonnay you're in the wrong place. The winery is off the beaten path. You have to drive up a winding road up a mountain. I thought I was lost at first but the drive is worth it. My friend and I were shown around the winery and we were able to taste Gewurtraminer straight out of a barrel! Because the winery is up in the mountains, you have a great backdrop to your wine tasting experience. Our guide was very knowledgeable. He had just taken the CMS certified sommelier exams. We tasted a Gewurtraminer, Riesling, Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir. The Chardonnay stole the show and my friend bought a bottle of it. They were kind enough to waive one of our tasting fees. What a charmer! This small, out-of-the-way winery, owned and run by a husband-and-wife team, specializes in (of all things!) white wines in Napa Valley, and they do a great job of it. High on Spring Mountain, virtually hidden from the world, is what looks like someone's home. It could have been, but the McCrea's, the owners, decided to use it as the winery. We sat at the dining room table to taste the incredible Gewurtztraminer, Riesling and Chardonnay, although we skipped their late-harvest dessert wine and a red wine. I am not ordinarily a fan of California Chardonnays, as the oakiness imparted by new oak generally overpowers the wine, but as Willinda McCrea showed us, their barrels are all of very old oak, which imparts virtually NO oak to the wines, leaving the wine with its own terroir. It is very reminiscent of a fine French Burgundy. The Gewurtztraminer and Riesling were both excellent, as well, and we ended up buying a mixed case to start our relationship with Stony Hill. Appointments are required at this charming winery, and the views are beautiful. I highly recommend a visit if you're looking for white wines in Napa Valley. read more

A group of friends were in town for a wedding and orchestrated a last minute tasting at Stony Hill. We called in the afternoon and the gentleman on the phone let us know they had one more tasting open at 2:30PM. He let us know to only use Google Maps to locate the Vineyard as other GPS maps will lead you astray. It was a beautiful drive up the hillside with a very quiet location tucked away in the trees. Allyson lead the tour/tasting and it was hands down the best tasting experience we have had. She was knowledgeable, easy to talk with, and kept a great cadence to the tour. She is a true pro. Stony Hill is a small (under 10,000 cases per year) out-of-the-way, very private winery located high in the hills overlooking the St. Helena area of the Napa valley. You must make an appointment to see this winery, and your visit will include an informal tour and a tasting. And I mean it when I use the word "must". If ever there was a must see setting for a winery, this is it. "Unworldly" is the only adjective that seems to fit. You begin with miles of drive on a winding but safe and beautiful country road and arrive at a lovely home in a spectacular setting. Park you car near the flower garden, wander around the vineyards and production area with a family member, sit around the living room table for a private tasting, admire the views again, and then reluctantly drive back down the mountain. The wines are decent but not great. But who cares? By the time you drink them, you are so enchanted that you not only forgive any shortcomings, but enjoy every sip. One stands out, however, and that is the sweet Semillon de Soliel, a very good dessert wine. Next best is the Reisling. They are experimenting with reds, but... I reluctantly write this review because I don't want the place to be overrun, but since I found it using Yelp, it only seems fair. read more

The experience and the location of this place makes for an amazing time. You drive up the main road and its a good 3 mile drive as you keep getting higher as you are in the hills/mountains. Alex was our guide and host. He was funny and friendly and made for an enjoyable time. After a tour of the grounds and the ferminting room we went up on the back balcony to taste wine. The views of the area are just beautiful. They make great wines. Chardonnay and Gerwutz and Reislings. As well as a sweet dessert wine. The wines have a great acidic to them. What an incredible experience! Beautiful setting, perched atop a hill overlooking the valley. After a tour of the winery, we sat outside under a tree tasting wine with this spectacular view of napa valley. Willinda, the hostess and proprietor, was incredibly warm and welcoming, and we couldn't have had a better time sitting and chatting with her as we tasted the vineyard's offerings. The winery is predominantly focused on making white wine, but their Cabernet Sauvignon offering was also delicious, if a bit less traditionally big as others in the region (my preference!). The Chardonnays were delicious and minimally oaky, allowing the fruity, acidic character of the wine to shine through. Yum! My husband and I had a truly wonderful experience here. Lovely and charming place tucked away next to a state park. We enjoyed our time at this somewhat more old fashioned winery with a family feel. The surroundings make it feel very peaceful and picturesque there. Moreover it was a great way to start our day off with some nice whites, before getting our tongues covered with tannins at red-heavy places later. The Gewurtztraminer was pretty good, and I was pleasantly surprised by the understated but elegant Cabernet Sauvignon, although that was not for sale. While I had been looking forward to trying the Riesling, it was actually a bit sweet for my taste, so although I still enjoyed tasting it, we didn't buy any. I liked the 2009 Chardonnay and we walked away with a bottle of that. We were not as wowed by the views, but that may be because it was overcast and a little rainy, and we ended up having to do most of the tasting inside. read more

Stony Hill Vineyard is a great example of a wonderful, small, family run winery that can be found up on Spring Mountain making some of the best wines in all of Napa Valley. It is also an unusual winery for Napa Valley because they make mostly white wines in a valley that is noted for its reds, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. But these are mountain wines grown in an entirely different climate and soil than down in the valley. Grapes grown on Spring Mountain have a much different character than grapes grown elsewhere. There is a distinct nostalgic charm to Stony Hill. From the wonderful tour and tasting offered by Willinda, to the lovely, intimate setting and the purity of the wines, this winery offers an experience that cannot be found in most Napa Valley wineries. It is a reminder of the old days when tradition, culture, family and commitment meant more than chasing wine rating scores or optimizing profits. Stony Hill, like some other small wineries on Spring Mountain, remains true to the original spirit of Napa Valley. They offer an earthy sensibility combined with a warm personal experience that is a welcome relief from the hectic commercialism of some of the big business wineries. Stony Hill is just off Highway 29 at the entrance to the Bale Grist Mill State Park. Check the directions before you go there or you will end up calling on your cell phone to ask for directions. This is the only Spring Mountain winery that you approach directly off Highway 29. From the park entrance there is a narrow, long winding road that takes you up to the winery. Stony Hill is still owned by the family that first bought it as a goat farm back in 1947. Their winemaker, Mike Chelini, arrived there in 1972. They make some very good white wines and are now branching out to Cabs, although they only make about 3,400 cases of wine total per year. Stony Hill uses oak barrels to store and age their wines but they do not use new barrels to add oak to the wine. Older oak provides a subtle difference from stainless steel, but does not overwhelm the varietal characteristics of the wine. I've always thought that Cabs could handle oak (especially big Napa Cabs) but that Chardonnays were often ruined by too much oak and did better with little or none. The current releases include the 2009 Stony Hill Chardonnay ($42) that is not subject to malolactic conversion or oaking. It has more minerality, complexity and balanced acid than most Napa Valley chardonnays. If you like white Burgundies, then you should like this chard. The main difficulty with a very dry chardonnay like this, without all the butter and oak, is that the varietal characteristics are naked, no wine maker tricks can be used and the grapes need to be the best quality. There is nothing to cover or camouflage the grape. If really good grapes are not used, if the wine isn't perfectly balanced, then it will turn out badly. The 2010 Stony Hill Gewürztraminer ($24) is also quite dry with the spiciness and acid perfectly balanced with the fruit. It reminds me of the very nice, very dry Gewürztraminers that use to be made in Alsace back in the 1970s and 80s, when minerality and balance were all important. It is the perfect wine for much Asian food. The 2010 White Riesling ($27) is off dry rather than dry. You can taste a little residual sugar. But it is perfectly balanced with the acid, fruit and Riesling varietal characteristics in total harmony with the slight sweetness. With a lovely nose and well-balanced palate, this is one of the best Rieslings made in the U.S. The final wine we tasted was the 2009 Semillon de Soleil desert wine with 7.5% residual sugar. This is an easy to drink, pleasant desert wine without the acid, body, botrytis or price of French Sauternes. It is $30 for a half bottle. Those who like dessert wines should try it. Stony Hill also has a 2008 Red Table Wine for $25, which has some cherry on the nose, with cherry and chocolate on the palate, and a nice balance with good tannins. It is a Cabernet Sauvignon that is called red table wine because they are just beginning to make Cabs. It is a lighter style wine than most Napa Cabs and seems like it would be very food friendly. Next year this wine will be made as the Stony Hill 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon. If you want to try their Cab, we would recommend grabbing some of this 2008 at this price. Tours and tastings are by appointment only but this can easily be made by phone or over the Internet. There is a $25 nominal fee that it is applied to any purchase. Since you will certainly want to purchase some of their excellent wine, the tasting will end up being complimentary. If you like really good white wine and small, charming, family wineries, then Stony Hill should be near the top of your Napa Valley wineries to visit. read more

This vineyard/winery has so much heart and soul. It's really a boutique vineyard experience. It has relatively short but really interesting and unique history as it's been family owned since 1948. The stories were rich and the wines are refreshing. I found myself connecting the tastes to the surroundings, but the best part was the chance to learn their unique story and get a specific lens into what makes Napa wines possible and special. It was a treat to experience and I can't wait for the right moment to share their wine with my friends and family. read more
