Why do I keep using this supermarket? After moving to the area last year, from Dorchester, I thought the service of a suburban stop & shop would be vastly better than the stop & stab of South Bay. Boy was I wrong! On Sept 11th, 2020, I went to the bakery to buy a cake for my wife's birthday. A wilted, pruned-attitude of a woman curtly "serviced" me at the bakery. Quickly deducing she was in no mindset to write on the cake Happy Birthday in Spanish (feliz cumpleaños), I went with a simple Message of Happy Birthday, and her name. After several tries, she shoved the unfinished cake toward me and my son saying. "that's the best I can do. They don't pay me enough to do a good job." Honest to God, exact quote. Verbatim. I was absolutely floored by the sheer lack of effort. Then this morning, out of desperation, I stopped in for produce, and 1/2 & 1/2, as I happen to be going by the supermarket. Remembering what "stellar" service they provided in the past, I went through the self checkout. The auto teller erroneously scanned the red grapes I put down to be weighed, followed by a message to wait for help. I waited a bit, while the meek, and disjointed employee attended to nothing In particular. Tired of waiting, as only one of two in the self checkout area, and as there was only the first and only item on the defunct register, I moved to another, having passed by some negative feedback from the meek one, mumbling something that I should have waited. When I finished, I realized I forgot the half and half. I asked her politely if I could leave my groceries there at her service desk while I ran to get the creamer. Not saying anything, and looking around for someone else to help me than her, I eventually told her to not bother someone else, and that I would tote all heavy, my paid groceries with me. Service is just terrible. That kind of subpar service is evidence of poor training, which starts in management. Never again Stop & Stare in Braintree. Shame on you. read more

I like this STOP & SHOP better than the Weymouth one. People have manners most of the time, there's less problems, and they usually have what I want or need. The guacamole isn't quite as good as the Weymouth one, tho. I got a vaccination here at the pharmacy. I has to schedule mine the night before. But fir some reason 30+ People showed up wanting to be vaccinated as soon as I was waiting for mine. YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO PRE-REGISTER! Also, if my occupation involved pharmaceuticals, medicine, or groceries, as well as working with the general public, I'd MAKE SURE to have a fundamental education in speaking basic Spanish , n since this is Greater Boston it wouldn't be that much more of a stretch to ALSO learn Portuguese since we have a large Brazilian population. I'm DEFINITELY ONE TO TALK SINCE I'M MULTILINGUAL, N I speak Mandarin & Pekingese w a tiny bit of basic vocabulary in Cantonese. N YES, I do actually require these languages in my life, hence WHY I LEARNED THEM on my own. If u taught ur employees at least 300-500 words vocabulary in Spanish, had pop music in Spanish mixed in on ur loud speakers, had games n prizes weekly for employees, n encouraged other Americans (since not all of the USA has spoken English since the 1600s) it would greatly help ur business. U don't need to be a Spanish speaking expert to use Spanish comprehensively to sell products, solve problems, n help customers. It's not going to kill u to OPEN YOUR MIND to other ways of thinking. In fact, u would probably be a lot happier to find new n different ways of thinking about life in general. U might even find that Spanish speaking persons are very likable, lovable, n expand your own world beyond what u currently see in a limited capacity. Even the Founding Fathers spoke multiple languages during the period of "The Enlightenment" of the Renaissance. All human brains can do it, even with minimal effort. read more

I am handicapped and need a cart guy to fetch me a scooter but there weren't any cart guys around, even though I waited about 45 minutes. By then I had to go to the bathroom. The ladies room is not handicapped accessible, furthermore, it isn't even accessible for the able-bodied. The stalls are so small that you can clasp your hands together, jut out your elbows and touch both walls with your elbows. I asked an employee how they used the toilet and she told me that they wait for the "handicapped" stall because it was the only one big enough to turn around in. Although they advertise that you can pay your electric bill there, the employees didn't know how to do it. Prices are higher than other supermarkets. One good thing is that they stay open one hour later than other Stop and Shops. read more

I only come here out of convenience but every time I do I wish I had gone to Shaw's down the street. -The produce is crap and a lot of the times they run out of broccoli! And this is a thing I notice all the dang time. Like hello if you constantly are out of something you would think whoever is doing inventory would adjust accordingly. And even when they do have broccoli in stock it had brown spots all over and isn't as fresh as it should be. -There have been times when certain items I need have been out of stock for almost a month or even more! Again, an issue with whoever is doing inventory. -When the strike happened and I had to go to Shaw's instead, I was surprised by how much fresher and a better selection they had than this Stop and Shop to the point that I go to Shaw's now instead. ***Whoever is in charge of inventory, please get it together!*** read more

August 2023: This Stop and Shop on Grove Street recently installed new Envipco bottle and can redemption machines. These machines are incredibly efficient and fast, making redemption a breeze. I redeem my bottles and cans as this is a better way to recycle than Single Stream Recycling; the collected aluminum and plastic is guaranteed to be clean and pure, unlike with Single Stream. (Of course I do get a buck or two back as well!) Thank you to Stop & Shop management for investing in these machines. (Suggestion: Would be nice if they accepted all MA returnables, i.e even those the store doesn't sell itself, which is a component of the proposed Massachusetts Better Bottle Bill). read more

The only thing I can equate this to on a Sunday is a Spartan Race. You are literally dodging people whipping around with their carts, weaving in and out of customers and then trying not to trip over the workers who always seem to be in the middle of the isle. The positives here are the seafood department is great and they are always helpful. My 2 main complaints are the produce is always moldy and they never have enough registers open. You would think they could prepare for a Sunday rush by opening actual cashier lanes, instead they have 10 self-service lanes open. The self-service lanes are more difficult because they have 1 person supervising the lanes, when 90% of the time, something scans wrong and they need to assist the customer. I have spoken with the produce manager because they have a problem with moldy produce. It really hasn't gotten any better. If the produce is moldy, you probably shouldn't put it on the shelf. read more

I would have given them zero stars if possible. Their prices are high than most places and just this week they showed that they don't care about their customers. On Sunday, I bought raspberries for 2 for $5. I went today (Wednesday) to get more. The price was $3.99, that's an increase of $1.49 each. I called and the answer was that the price of the current delivery was 60cents more than the last delivery. So, they raised them almost $1.50 to cover a 60 cent increase. That is price gouging at its worst. I am going to find somewhere else to shop. read more

This has got to be the least favorited stop and shops in the company. The quality for what you pay for is very poor such as selling expired products, moldy floors, and an unpleasant fowl odor. Not to mention the management there is not very polite to their customers, neither are many of their employees here. Customer service is a nightmare. read more

The Deli is AWESOME with what they carry namely Boars Head Brand... the staff is always nice from the person who waits on you at the deli, fish counter or if you are seeking something specific out and can't find it!! I hate the way the Stop and Shop Company redesigned this store. The new fast checkout cage in the front of this store is a fire trap. How are people supposed to leave quickly if there is an emergency? Also the quality of meat in there meat Dept is poor. Without question Grove Street #478 is the most ridiculous store in the chain and the reason I travel 25 minutes to Wegmans instead of 4 minutes to this back-alley nightmare. They should gall it Grave Street, it is like being in the death-knell of supermarket backwaters compared to Wegmans. None of the technology works in the place. Exhibit 1: Good luck returning the plastic 10-gallon Poland Spring water bottles for your $6 deposit - that ticket machine out front won't be working and you have to wait 9 minutes at their mis-named "Solutions Center" just to get a white ticket that should have taken, no kidding, 3 seconds at the machine out front. You'll care less about the money and just want a refund on your wasted life time there. Next up is the hand-held scanner. It will take you 2 attempts to get a flashing one that can actually be removed from the kiosk. Then it will have "connection issues" on or about aisle 12 and you'll have to abandon. Even if it works, the Self-Serve Checkout lane for the hand-held scanners -- Lane 1 - has been broken for a year now and the kicker is you spent all this time scanning your order and bagging it so you wouldn't have to wait in lines - and then you have to anyway because Lane 1 dedicated to scan-as-you-go is shut down. So you have to get behind some cutting-edge wannabe grandmother in the self-lane trying to input 23 coupons and pay by check. Friggin' ridiculous. Other reviewers' comments on the skanky produce are dead on. Also, every broken scale in the chain is sent to this store for it's final throes of life. I've never been to Grave Street when at least one -- and more than likely, at least half -- of the produce scales aren't broken. You end up with your fellow produce customer zombies, just wandering around the place holding your plastic bags looking for a place to to be weighed. The people are nice, for the absolute crappy environment they have to work with -- with the exception of the Peapod kids, who couldn't act more indifferent and bored on the job if they worked at a Cricket match. When zombie customers actually wake up and think about this place for more than 2 minutes, they'd have to agree: Unrequited Hellhole. read more

Went here on a Saturday afternoon. Not too busy. There wasn't a plastic bag in the produce dept. bought a package of there cantaloupe that they cut up, GROSS, there was hair tangled up in it. I didn't realize until 1/2 the package was gone. For such a large chain supermarket, they don't have the help they need. I had to bag all my groceries myself. Which I don't mind, but don't they have 'baggers' for that. This place got an extra star from me because they weren't busy. read more

It's a pretty good store. They have what you need, but they are lacking in the extras. I would love more and varied produce. It would be nice to see dragon fruit, lychees, passion fruit, jicama, and other more interesting ingredients. I don't really like the weird aisles around the produce that are turned the other way. It's kind of confusing and I usually just avoid those aisles. I find the staff to be really nice, for the most part. The cashiers tend to be grumpy a lot of the time, and hardly ever smile. The deli is pretty good, but they definitely try to up-sell you. I've purchased proscuitto twice, once was domestic and once was premium. For four slices I spend 91 cents and 3.92 for premium. I think that's a really big difference in price! Definitely domestic from now on. I've found lately that the Stop and Shop is more expensive than other stores in the area. When looking at the flyer they are consistently one dollar more expensive than other stores for the same items. read more

My preference for shopping is Shaw's but once in a great while (mainly when Redbox is only available there) we find ourselves picking up a few items. Note: shopping savings is only for dedicated Stop & Shop customers. This is great it builds a community and dedicated traffic! Hence the 2 stars. On the other hand having someone available to educated a customer on the rewards program is super helpful. Such a tremendous place to shop but the real heroes are the cart pushers! One such young man, he was about 6 feet tall, had a buzz cut, a vein coming from his forehead, and a moderately nice pair of Jordan's on. Anyway this young man I see everyday pushing carts with the might of a Greek god. Whoever that young muscular boy is, he deserves a raise. Hands down favorite stop & shop employee!!! read more

I am sad to write this review, but the service, selection and quality in this location have deteriorated over the past several months to the point where I will be shopping at Shaw's or Whole Foods. Produce - rotten produce throughout the section. Potatoes are green and sometimes mushy, bagged lettuce didn't even last 2 days, despite sell by date - 7 days. Meat selection is horrible. Twice last week I was looking for ground beef and there was very little to choose from. I asked the man behind the meat counter and he said I would have to wait for someone to come in; he couldn't go in the back and get it, even though there was no one else waiting for him. Milk dates are often expired and the frozen food aisle is blocked by food waiting to be put out. Ice cream is covered with crystals inside and out. The thing that put me over the top was the bakery. I was waiting to get self-service rolls and there was a man who touched each one with his hands. I told the person at the counter and her response was - oh that happens all the time, I would never buy anything that is not packaged...WOW! Check out is a difficult proposition. At least one or two of the self-check aisles are always broken. I drive by Stop and Shop on my way to and from work every day, I will be going out of my way for improved customer service, selection and quality. read more

Just made my last purchase at Stop and Shop on Grove Street, Braintree. Purchased a pork roast to make for dinner on 6/28, got home, opened the package and the stench was nauseating. The expiration date was 6/17! Shame on me for not checking the date but how could there be meat on the shelf that was a week over the expiration date. The smell was so awful I didn't want to put it in my car to take it back! This is the last of many spoiled or possibly dangerous products I've encountered. This supermarket has the basics, but not much else. Certain things are way more expensive than they are at Shaws, including the deli and fresh spices. The international aisle is basically just tacos. There is also less variety than Shaws, and I don't see sales as often or for as little. Not bad, but not great. read more

They have what you need as far as grocery stores go. With that said I would like to say the aisles are placed in too many different directions it makes it difficult to negotiate especially if you happen to be in a rush. That kind of annoyed me. I did happen to pick up a French bread loaf with my other stuff. When I got home (I was hungry and got savage and I tore a piece off) to my sad surprise the bread was so dry inside and it cracked like the earth on the barren desert. Just ok. read more

I was in the area and needed to stop somewhere to get some groceries, just about a month ago. I was right near Shaw's on Pearl Street, so I thought to stop there. The parking lot was a disaster so I just left and found this Stop&Shop along Grove Street in a large shopping center, with a MUCH better parking lot. Lesson learned, if I'm ever in Braintree again, skip Shaw's and go to Stop&Shop, actually that's sort of a life lesson anyway right? Stop&Shop is just SO much better than Shaw's in general with the amazing scanner guns, self checkout, and selection in their stores (I'm OBSESSED with the scanner guns!). Anyway, the Braintree location was subpar in comparison to the others in the area. Yes, some things about this store are regulatory for all Stop&Shop's I have been to. The staff here are great (employee Ashley, and manager Kevin), the selection is superior (every SUPER Stop&Shop always has SO much more than groceries, it's truly one stop shopping for me.....), and the store was pretty organized. Additionally, the prices are consistently cheaper and checkout wait is never as long as the nearby location in Weymouth. What the Braintree store differs from my local Stop&Shop's and the one 5 minutes down the road in Weymouth is the cleanliness. Now it's not terrible, and very clean for what it is, but it could definitely use a renovation If I lived in this area, I would frequent the Weymouth location much more as it has got a remodel, while the Braintree location's walls are BEGGING for it. This location isn't terrible, but isn't anywhere near as clean or updated as the stores with the remodel. Additionally, the floral department here is very small and doesn't compare to the other Stop&Shop stores. Overall, this is a pretty good Stop&Shop, and a good option for a supermarket in Braintree, much better than Shaw's, however if you're looking for an extra clean store the one in Weymouth might be your best choice. 4 stars for the Braintree location. read more

This location on Grove Street is probably my favorite close location. The North Quincy (Hancock St) one is probably the largest and best one. The managers are great. Unfortunately Dave B. left in December 2013 but he was a super manager; you saw him do whatever needed to be done... bagging, check out, customer service, cleaning stuff up, stocking fruit. The new manager is pretty nice still. I ran into both regularly at the store and would chat them up. Dave I would give 5 stars. He moved to a location closer to where he lived (he was commuting about an hour). There is a pharmacy on location and the pharmacy manager was pretty nice too. Customer service is open later (9pm) than the Weymouth store and the shift managers and staff were very nice. If there's nobody in the seafood counter (say after 8pm), the deli guys have helped me out. It's regularly busy especially before bad weather, before Patriots games, and over the weekend. Big pluses! + They usually leave out cookies and goodies in the bakery area. My kids thank this location profusely. I have to avoid the bakery area before mealtimes. + decent seafood selection and regularly have various sales e.g., tilapia, cod, shrimp, scallops ... sometimes they also sample their crab dip (tasty) + good overall selection (much better than Weymouth) + car carts! Minuses: - parking lot can get very full (it's part of a plaza) - busy intersection (Grove and Liberty) I think some of their "sale" strategy (i.e., what goes on sale) is basically to reduce inventory on something or turn that item over. For instance, ice cream rotates through Breyer's, Hood, Friendly's, etc. read more

I visited this Grove St. Stop & Shop Supermarket on a recent stay in Braintree the first week of October. I was in town for a week and stopped by here an hour before closing on a Sunday night so had to sort of rush in my shopping expedition. I was happy to see it was a big, bright, clean & fully stocked store and I especially liked the bakery though tried to resist all the yummy -looking goodies! My cousin & I had shopped at a New Jersey Stop & Shop so knew it was a good chain and weren't disappointed. We picked up some frozen foods & produce & snacks and were grateful the nice clerk let us use the generic store card to get the savings since we didn't have a valid membership card. I always search for the different goodies, bakery items & snacks when I'm on a trip to bring home as souvenirs & grocery stores are a great place to find more variety of these! read more

Horrendous, horrible, awful! I have used Peapod delivery from the Braintree Stop and Shop occasionally for years. Each time I use it, I vow never again because of the screw ups, omitted items and "substitutions." I once received decayed strawberries. Today, over one-third (1/3) of my order was omitted- almost $75 worth of groceries. The delivery man left before I could finish ascertaining everything I was missing.I will never, ever use Peapod again, and I am done with Stop and Shop. Let the buyer beware. read more
