When I think of a grocery store, the picture that comes to mind is a bustling and vibrant space with employees who are happy to help. Well, not here. And it's no fault of the employees. I last came here on a Sunday to grab some vegetables, and as usual, the registers were sorely understaffed. The staff are always kind but sorely in need of some backup given that there's usually only one register open. The person working the self-checkout is always helpful here, but gosh wouldn't it be nice if they just had more regular lanes open so that self checkout didn't feel like the only viable option? As far as produce goes, I'd say it generally meets but doesn't exceed the bar in terms of freshness, but the herbs I'm looking for are frequently out of stock. I was looking for some fresh cilantro, but the only package available was wilted and on the border of moldy, so I shelved that idea and got the freeze dried stuff instead. Sadly, I'm always disappointed when I shop here. It's almost always better to make the trek down the road to Trader Joe's. They just do a better job. Staff, I feel you. Just survive. Stop and Shop seems to have stocked their shelves again. At the Brookline Stop and Shop's self checkout recently, I realized that if I spent a Little more, I'd earn a personalized reward during my visit. The self checkout staff person posted listened to my situation, then I was surprised that he offered to bring me the item I wanted. Upon completion of my transaction, he was sincerely interested if we were successful, if I had earned the reward I'd aimed for. l was impressed enough to post and share this story. read more

The produce is pretty good and the household items and pet food can't be found at Trader Joe's- but- be sure to check your receipt before leaving the store if you have purchased sale items. Generally our stop and shop card is scanned and the sale items recorded but today we almost lost $20 on a $77 bill because the card didn't scan even though we submitted it. And one item was somehow scanned twice which was explained as a mechanical malfunction. read more

Awful grocery store. Be prepared to bag your own groceries. It should NOT be the job of the cashier to ring up your items AND BAG YOUR ITEMS. Be prepared to watch the younger employees gather in huddles chatting and on their phones watching while paying customers bag their own groceries. Managers are very lackadaisical & snide. I don't understand the low rating on this place. This Stop & Shop is right in Coolidge Corner and it has a huge parking lot - I've seriously never had issues with this. It also has a 66 bus stop right in front of it. And a gas station! It's smaller than most, but I've never had problems finding what I'm looking for. Maybe if you're looking for something more specialty, but otherwise it's great. Good produce, good selection of items, and at reasonable prices. I've only ever had positive experiences with the staff members. Plus since it's technically not in Boston you don't have to pay for the paper bags at the end which is a win! read more

This is the closest grocery store to me but I'll be taking my car and driving elsewhere from now on because I have never left this place with everything I need! It's so ridiculous. In all my years of grocery shopping this has never happened to me at any other store. I obviously don't come here looking for any specialty items. Just a FEW examples: Once I went just for parsley, they had none. Another time they didn't have cornstarch, not that they were out, they just don't carry it I guess. Today they didn't have brown rice, or small/medium bags of any kind of rice for that matter. I'm like is this for real? How can they never have what I need?! I keep coming back because of the convenient location but it's a waste of time. Went in for quarters today so I could do my laundry--had been to a bank and a car wash beforehand. Met an absolutely unprofessional woman by the lottery counter. I understand there is a shortage but i did not know (nor should i be expected to know) the extent to which that affects whether stop n shop can allocate quarters. Specifics on the interaction: at 4:15 or so i approached the counter and asked whether i could get quarters for paper money and she curtly and coldly explained the shortage as though i was clueless. It was obvious her behavior had absolutely nothing to do with me (or shes a wretched homophobe), but as a customer there, I felt dismissed and castigated. When i said she was being rude she called me rude for barging in there asking for quarters. So I left. Eric H. nailed this store in his 4/9/24 review, but I'll add my own experience: personnel in customer servicer who can't handle ordering a replacement courtesy card, items ordinarily carried that take WEEKS to be reordered. (I've taken buses and/or walked to the Stop & Shop in Allston when I really need an item that this chain carries.) Actually, bagging my own groceries is no problem; I prefer to do it given my own professional experience as a grocery store bagger. Today the cashier said my 2 bags of groceries came to $38.49 and I handed her $40.55. Then she claimed I owed a balance of $17.94 which I knew couldn't be right, but she claimed I'd see why after I got my receipt. So I gave her an additional $20. The she figures out that she has made some kind of mistake but can't articulate what it is. A manager gets involved and I overhear that she entered into the register that I only gave her $20.55 rather than $40.55. (I also have personal grocery store cashier experience, so I know they had a choice of two simple fixes; simply add $20.00 received from customer or void the whole transaction, have me empty my bags, and scan the items again making sure to correctly record the amount of cash I gave her.) I was prepared for the second fix, but this cashier and manager acted like this was a rocket science problem hard to figure out. My frozen items are thawing and the line of customers behind me are forced to other checkout lines. I finally just demanded my $40.55 back, left their merchandise at checkout, and started my shopping all over again at Trader Joe's. TJ's might be a zoo of crowds, but there are reasons for that; their cashiers and managers are all very competent and their prices are better than S&S. Going forward, If I need anything TJ's doesn't carry, the S&S in Allston or the nearest Star Markets in Boston are also more competent. (There is one older cashier lady with white/grey hair at this otherwise sad store who is both very competent and very friendly; maybe she should be running the place. Or perhaps Town of Brookline should have gone ahead and displaced this 155 Harvard Street store with a school as they had planned a few years back. read more

Had a long day so this was icing on the cake. Came out of work to a low pressure tire so since this was the closest air pump I came here to use the one at their gas station. Paid and instead of getting air, the machine was taking the air. I then asked the associate if they are aware that the pump is not work and her response was "I don't know...sorry" How I am stuck and have to wait almost 1.5 hours for AAA. Just a truly terrible supermarket. Don't come here if you are looking for something specific as they'll probably be out of stock. They also only keep one lane open other than the self checkout--which doesn't have it's own line so you queue up in oatmeal and coffee aisle. Unless you don't see the tiny letter sized piece of paper that says to queue in that aisle, as most people don't, then you get to line up again! I've seen people get into shouting matches over that tiny piece of paper. When I forget how bad this store is and try to shop here I will usually have to abandon mission and go to a store more prepared to have customers. Where do I even begin? After shopping here for 18 years, I wish I could avoid it, but sometimes it's a convenience factor. Today's lovely experience involved me bringing moldy, squishy, rotting strawberries back to return that I had bought two days ago. I went to the customer service desk where nobody was standing. I asked someone in the store if someone was working at the customer service desk and he said he would go into the back and check. A few minutes later he came out and said the worker would be right with me. She came out at 8:51 and said "I'm not ready. I don't open till 9." She said it in a brash and unfriendly way, which is exactly what I would expect from this place. And why is the customer service desk not open until 9 AM when the store opens way earlier than that??? Customer service, in general, should get 1 star at this place, if even that. That has been my consistent experience. I am only giving it 2 stars because sometimes the chain has good sales. This store should be replaced by one that appreciates its customers and is in a better building. The only reason this ridiculous store stays in business is due to the population density in the neighborhood and the elderly population who live nearby. This location is painfully in need of an update. The building feels pretty run down and during the winter the roof was leaking into the produce section for several days. The produce is mediocre, but the meat selection is reasonable. With respect to general selection: it's average. It is about what you'd expect to find at a typical suburban grocery store. Don't plan on finding many specialty items here; often this place works best when supplemented with visits to other stores. I appreciate the fact that the store responds to some of the comments but there haven't been any improvement in the two years I've tried to shop here. Shelves not stocked is a common issue but the biggest problem I have is checking out. Today at noon there were only two checkout clerks, and one told me that the guy in front of me was the last customer she was taking. I went to the self-checkout and there was a line of about 12 people. I really do enjoy Stop&Shop stores. Stop&Shop is my favorite regional grocery chain for a whole plethora of factors, but mainly for their increase in awesome technology, a fabulous selection and updated, clean, appealing stores. With this all said, the Brookline location has much to be desired. While I do have to realize this store is in Brookline, it should be updated, larger, cleaner, and organized in a better manner. While I understand the convenience for nearby resident, only about seven minutes away from this store is the twenty five aisle massive Allston location, and for me, that would mean that I would be making that trip to another Stop&Shop weekly if I lived in Brookline, because this seven aisle store just doesn't do. First issue, it's packed. So busy in fact that people are unable to even go down the main corridor of the store by the registers. Even with all registers open, lines entail into the aisles and cause major traffic jams. With a store of this size, they should invest in smaller, more effective carts, as many other urban grocery store's have. Second, selection is minimal. They don't have a very good variety in any department and shelves seem to be frequently empty or bare. With such a high turnover of merchandise in this store, someone should be doing something different to make progress on keeping the shelves stocked much better (especially in the frozen foods and dairy). Third, parking lot and exterior. For being in a town like Brookline, Stop&Shop really needs to clean up their act with the exterior, parking lot and signage. Several "Do Not Enter" signs are blank and cause a hazard to drivers and the lack of lighting and even spray paint on the pavement poles are not an appealing sight. Progress and attempt to fix and renovate the exterior and interior of this store is necessary to its success for the customer base. I really don't understand why their were so many people here because I would be driving to another Stop&Shop for the majority of my groceries. Very disappointed with this store. You know cashiers can be robotic and totally awkward. Its nice to actually talk to someone with a brain. -If talking to people isn't your thing they have self-service checkout terminals that dont jam up every time. -And, lastly, they go above an beyond the call. I inadvertently left my credit card at a register once. I was half way down to Coolidge Corner when I heard a young man yelling: "Sir, Sir!" Kosher Coke--the Real Coke. The Ultimate Junk Foodie Soda. S&S Brookline has it, for obvious reasons. Only during Passover. Look for Yellow Caps on 2 Liter Bottles. Never saw it in any other supermarket in Boston. This is the only supermarket to stock it, AFAIK. In 2006, I did a fairly exhaustive search on my BlackBerry. Imagine calling supermarkets and asking them if they had Coke with yellow caps. I was a fanatic yelper before I joined yelp, what can I say? There is plenty of info on the internet about it. I love the taste. It's rounder, and it doesn't have a thin, bitter aftertaste that Corn Syrup has. And if you'll excuse this ridiculous investigation, it has a bigger head of foam. IMO. I poured a glass for my friend who was skeptical. He chugged, put the glass down, and said, "You know, all these years, I thought it was the glass bottles. But it's the sugar! That's just like the Coke from my childhood." It definitely tastes different. However, short shelf-life. It was cheaper than 2006 gasoline, like a dollar for a 2 litter bottle, so I bought 30 thinking I'd be set for a year. (Okay, I bought 50 and gave away a bunch to foodie friends.) The cashiers thought I was a total nutjob, they had to help me load my car because they wouldn't sell me the crates. I sort of drank half of them, but I remember the taste changing over the months of sampling. It was pretty lousy by November. If you're the kind of pop drinker who prefers cans over bottles or even glass, this is an eye-opener. Half a year ago I probably would've given this Stop & Shop 3 stars. Now it's a 4-star grocery. Why? Well, first of all, it got a major face lift, so it's bright, shiny and clean. Second, they recently installed a self-scan checkout system, which makes grocery shopping way more fun and efficient. Here's how it works: Scan your S&S card at the self-scan kiosk by the door. Pick up your point-and-click scanner, a few plastic/paper bags (if you didn't remember to bring your own), and you're ready to get going! Just scan and bag your groceries as you go. Every item is tracked on your S&S card, so when you're done shopping, just scan the card again at the self-checkout register and insert payment. It's brilliant once you figure it out, as you can avoid standing in crazy lines waiting for the customer ahead of you who has 20 coupons and wants to know if they can just go back and grab one more thing... Hats off to you Brookline Stop & Shop for embracing technology. While I still love Trader Joe's more, you're definitely my second favorite grocery now! Stop & Shop in Brookline, MA--on Harvard Street about midway between Coolidge Corner and Brookline Village--is an OK place for groceries, our usual destination about half the time for more than 30 years. They operate a full-service market, meaning you will rarely find they lack something of the type you're looking for, We also shop at Russo's in Watertown for produce, Butcherie on the other side of Coolidge Corner for kosher products and Trader Joe's on Beacon Street for some items. As of April 11, 2019, our local Stop & Shop is in extremis. Its unionized workers are on strike. The market looked dead. There were about a dozen demonstrators and no shoppers in sight, A handful of cars were in one corner of the parking lot, and lights inside the store looked to have been turned off. People are scurrying for alternatives. Trader Joe's, about three blocks away, was mobbed. read more

Not only have I had to deal with rude employees and several items that ring up incorrectly (and I have not done much shopping here), I made the mistake of considering buying chicken from this store. I picked up a package of it, for which the sell-by date was in five days, and it smelled absolutely vile. Packaged chicken that is not yet expired should not reek; ithis makes me extremely suspicious of their ability to keep any perishable food properly stored. This is maybe the most terrible full grocery store I have been to since I was a child. The vegetable offerings are the first sign that something is afoot. An enigmatic proportion of vegetables at this grocery store are sold in Stop N Shop branded plastic bags, which offer you no way to test them or to choose which ones you want or don't want. The selection itself is also very sparse -- I've very rarely if ever even been able to find Romaine Lettuce here. Not sure what that is about. And half of their offerings are only organic, which is problematic as well. No hanger steaks in the meat section, and a really paltry selection of seafood. No sourdough bread (what is this??!!). Meat and cheese prices are all high relative to a shopping experience that is completely subpar. As the kind of person who revels in the act of grocery shopping, who loves to pick out the right produce and dream and salivate over meat and vegetable options, this is not the grocery store for me. The grocery store atmosphere feels like it's straight out of the 90s. It's not well lit, the things are expensive, and there aren't many of them that aren't processed. I think the percentage of the store that is dedicated to vegetables is probably hovering around 5% -- which is ridiculous. It's also just a testament to poor urban design. Whoever decided to put the parking lot in front of the grocery store was certainly misguided. Come back to the future, Stop N Shop. I hate almost everything about this store, except that it's near my apartment and is open until 11. The customer service is terrible. The cashiers are either simply rude or are rude by carrying on conversations with the baggers, sometimes awkward conversations to listen to. The prices are decent and I can usually find what I need. They sold me expired muffins the other day. When I looked today they still had expired muffins on the shelf. And they had other muffins that were moldy. This S&S gets a big ol' "meh" from me. It's true that since the renovations in October, the store is now cleaner looking, better-organized, and generally more pleasing to the eye. However, I only really go to this store because it's a 10 minute walk from my apartment. The produce selection has always been a plus for me, though I'll be damned if I can find edamame. The cheese selection seems to have improved since the renovations, as well as the prepared-foods section. Sadly, the sushi bar always seems to be bare by the time I get there :( As another Yelper said, S&S is good for the basics. The prices aren't the greatest, but this IS Brookline, and it's cheaper than the Shaws super-Mecca @ the Pru. It's also a good place for strangers to approach me and start random conversations while I'm standing in the pasta aisle, trying to decide if my budget allows for Barilla, or if it'll be a store-brand kinda day. I live close by, and i can say have been very happy with the store for the past 3 years. They also have dramatically improved recently, lowering their rates across the store and offering promotions that are worthwhile regularly (free tropicana oj, eggs, icecream...) Their fruits and vegetables section is the best around: fresh, tasty, inexpensive. Much better than trader joe's. I also want to point out their bakery. I have a high standard for my bread and theirs is definitely the most tasty around for a very good price. This stop&shop is the closest market to where I live, so I end up here not infrequently. Each time I go in, it's like flipping a coin: will I come out feeling weary and defeated, or angry and unsatisfied? They're both just so common. I really don't get how a grocery in a relatively yuppie neighborhood can be so incredibly crummy, but they pull it off with a jaunty "see if we care" attitude, to boot. My complaints: - The produce is incredibly hit or miss. I frequently get onions home to realize that half the onions in the bag are starting to go bad on the inside, or that there were fruit flies with the bananas. The winter is understandably the worst time (one time there was a mountain of previously frozen celery, thawed and limp and ready to mold) And the produce in the lighted cases is sprayed and watered to within an inch of its life, so you always have to bring home the parsley or carrots and open them up and dry them off so they won't rot. I should say that recently, the clementines have been excellent, though, and there are sometimes some good apples. - They're constantly running out of basic staples. (Or, things I would ahve thought were basic staples- maybe not) On many many occasions I've gone to get something kind of regular, like flour, or dried lentils, or half and half, only to find that they don't have any. - Any time anything is on sale, it's always gone immediately. Maybe this is because there are so many retirement homes in the vicinity, with people who go to the store for recreational walks and an eye for bargains, I dunno. But if you actually need something for a recipe, your best bet is to hope that it's *not* on sale. (This does actually seem to be getting slightly better recently, though I'm not sure if it's because I'm shopping at different times than I used to, or they're just a little better at managing things nowadays) - Miserable selection. I realize it's a small location and they're not going to have all the things that they have in a "super" stop & shop. But really, it's pretty pathetic the kinds of things they don't carry. Every time I go into a store back in NY, I feel this incredible envy of the kinds of things that you can get in the store. Chipotles in adobo? enchilada sauce? Vanilla sugar? potato starch? big bags of rice? The selection definitely keens towards the kinds of things you'd need to cook for teenagers or senior citizens, making it feel like a throw-back. One bright spot is that since the renovation, at least they carry tortillas, which they did not previously have. (ooooh, exotic) - Although there are all these spiffy new self-checkout lanes, half the time only one or two of them are actually open. WTF??? Are the robots on break? Why would you turn off self-checkout lanes when there are lines waiting for the others? I've never seen in this in any other stop & shop (though then again, my other stop & shop experiences have all been at "Super" Stop & Shops) It drives me nuts, because I usually go at off-peak times when there's just two self-checkout lanes open (express and regular), and there's usually some holdup with something not scanning, or someone trying to pay in some non-self-checkoutable way, or something. It can really take FOREVER. If I have a few extra minutes, I seriously stay on the green line a few more stops and go to Shaws. Surprisingly this Stop&Shop had fish heads for sale. My boyfriend has been looking for them so he can make fish head curry, a Singaporean dish he picked up when he lived overseas. I have always had good stuff from them. Fresh produce, good meat, large selection. I had an especially good experience yesterday with them, which is making me initiate them into yelp: I called literally a dozen grocery stores in the Brookline and Cambridge (including Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Shaws, Yohinoya, Harvest Coop...) and everyone was out of Jicama, for which I was apparently quite desparate. I finally called this Stop and Shop and the produce man told me they had one left and that he would put it aside for me! It turns out it didn't matter, because by the time I got there there was a whole basket of Jicama! Stop and shop saved my Jicama party! read more
