I came here yesterday for the first time and had a really good experience with Lizzie. Recently I've been on a hair journey. For most of my life I've kept my hair cut low but the last couple of years, I've been growing it out. I've maintained it on my own with a twist it up comb , curling up a little for but started testing out twist curls at home thanks to my husband. I found the shop on line, went to their site and read through all the profiles and Lizzies spoke to me. The shop is warm and welcoming when you come in. They have you wash your hands before you get settled. She washed my hair which was my first time having that done and it felt great. I really wanted to support this shop, and find a stylist to help me with hair care maintenance on my natural hair. I reached out to them after reviewing their IG and FB. I called and left a few messages directly at the shop number. In addition I reached out several times to one of the stylist directly through text and never got a call back. I love seeing Black owned businesses being successful! My hope is they will consider following up with potential new clients in the future. I needed my hair done before a trip to San Diego and Jadah was sooooo accommodating last minute. I wasn't sure if I wanted a blowout or silk press but ended up going with a blowout because I've never had one. She was having a promo going on for a free deep conditioning with a silk press but still gave it to me because I was between the two. She was super nice and did a great job on my hair. Came here to have my locs "restored". My previous loctition of 4 months had done an average job at best, but my last visit to her left much to desired for a finished product. That's when I came to SOK. Jennica was fantastic! We had a conversation about expectations. Then she went to work. Hours later, she was done and they looked 1000% better than ever previously. Three things: 1. The place was easy to find, very cute, and very relaxing with great music playing. If you have a friend or family member with you, they let you stay and wait or you can walk around the downtown area, grab food, or enjoy the scenery. 2. My hair stylist Gabi was very direct and honest about what questions I had and what was better for the health of my hair. She gave me a set price and the actual hours I'd be in her chair. At other places, I was quoted 3x times more and was told I'd have to go in 2-3 times on multiple days for the same hair style and color that Gabi did in one day and in two hours. 3. I'm very picky when it comes to who do my hair but Liz made me feel welcome and has been taking care of my locs for 2 years now I would say and she's been so amazing, etc and I trust her when it comes to my locs. I have been coming to see Lizzie at this salon for several years now. When I started, I was missing chunks of hair all over my head caused by the large amount of pain killers I was taking due to injuries sustained from a car accident. Through Lizzie's care, my hair grew back. We alternated styling my hair using braids, weaves, crocheting, and flat ironing to prevent stressing my hair and scalp. The communication between the stylist and myself was via text. Where I would send a text and wait 2-3 to get a response. When I got to my appointment she was already working on 2 heads. Make sure to be very specific about what you want. Requested a blowout and color & trim on my natural hair. She did the color, trim and then blow dried.my hair only. Did straighten or style it at all. When I asked about straightening she said oh you didn't ask for that. And she had 4 people waiting behind me so she didn't have time. This hair shop is awesome. Gabby is so good with children. I was referred to here about a year ago. She is always accommodating, kind, and very good with children. Most importantly, the shop is professional, clean, welcoming, good prices and they are fast. I have never had a shop that was a quick and Gabby. Right me thinks not..NEVER AGAIN!! Mind you it is Friday, July 8th, 2011 at 10:30am (I took a day off from work); I waited for my kitchen magician an additional 15 minutes to arrive at the shop. Before she could even really get started she kept answering her cell phone. To add insult to injury Elizabeth Brown took 6 hours to complete the job. The base braids had no artistry or pattern. She just braided hair wherever there was (real estate) a vacancy. Elizabeth destroyed my $530.00 Indian Hair Company Virgin unprocessed hair investment. Initially she was half done and I discovered she had place the 18" tracks in the location for the 20" tracks. I explained this to her and showed her the labels on the bottom of each box before her hands touched my head. Oh, but Elizabeth was astute enough to notice a color variance between the two tracks placed in my head. She believed the Indian Hair Company should compensate me either financially or with product (replacement hair) for their error. How could they she cut the wefts. Elizabeth wasted more of my time as she had no alternative but to take half of the weave down. She hacked the weft into so many pieces that the one tracks of beautiful hair resembled a bad jigsaw puzzle. Elizabeth told me there was a one month guarantee for free repairs. There is far too much talking and side conversation going on she does not pay attention to the quality if her work. What can say Ghetto---my my my have mercy. She charged me I should have charged her for my time and energy. I wasted $150.00; Elizabeth did not credit me or provide a discount to me for her initial error in track placements. Her costly mistake wasted my valuable time, made me late for an engagement and compromised the integrity of both my new braids and the net. To add insult to injury I tried to call Elizabeth back on her cell number two weeks later was changed; Elizabeth never called to see how It went with my weave. This is July 31, 2011. She obviously didn't care. I had to buy new hair and pay a real professional weaveologist to remove the kitchen weave "Mop" off my head. After doing so the loose braids which were only in for one week were coming apart. So, Elizabeth has not perfected the braiding technique either. Did she really go to Beauty College and pass the State Board? Avoid this place like the plague. I need to go back a get my change or at least remember to be intelligent and never go to Straight Or Knot again. I'll just maintain my own knots. Thank You Very Much! Elizabeth, get a new profession. Learn about time management, calendars, returning telephone calls, client services, less drama. Don't go there spend your hard earned money wisely. read more

Seemingly nice people but they can't do hair. I had to wait an hour, even though I had an appointment. After speaking with my stylist, Lizzy, she said that she only cut the relaxed hair and it looks that way bc my hair is so short on the top. Well my hair wasn't that short in the top before I got there, that's why I was willing to cut it, bc I knew my hair was long enough to not have it cut too short. I used to travel to Sacramento to get my touch ups for over 25 years. I decided to go natural and I am in transition. Well Ms. Ruby is the best. I was referred to her by a coworker who has dreads. Ms. Ruby gets my hair, especially the new growth, as straight as a perm. She does a hard press at my roots, and my hair will stay straight for weeks longer than having my perm. As long as Ms Ruby is there I will never go back to perms. She makes my transition much easier and she talks you through how to maintain your transitioning hair. Now I have to trust her to cut cut my hair. That will be the next time I go in to see her. I will refer all to this shop. I noticed many women who go there are going natural and it's nice to see so many of us getting back to our roots. read more

I've been in need of a new hairdresser and went to Straight or Knot after reading this one review. Major mistake! I went there to get a relaxer and a trim done by Ruby. I made it to my appointment on time, yet it took them an hour for any sort of acknowledgement and 2 hours before they even applied the relaxer. Once applied they told me to sit in the waiting area, and it wasn't just any waiting area it was the same waiting area that the receptionist sits. Needless, to say when you are out of sight you are out of mind. Most people understand that you should not have a relaxer on your head for more than 15-20 minutes. Though I did not know the exact time they put the relaxer in I know that it was on my head close to the 30-40 minutes. It was burning so bad that I had to tell another hairdresser that it needed to be rinsed out immediately. My hairdresser was nowhere to be found so the receptionist rinsed it out for me. After that I was pissed, there was no way that I was going to give her the rest of my time or money. With just the application and rinsing she charged me 50.00 and she wasn't too concerned with me leaving (with wet hair mind you). Her comment to me was, "It's the weekend, you should have known we would be busy on the weekends." I couldn't believe she would have the audacity to say something like that. Here is some food for thought for Ruby, how about you take care of your customers instead of double, triple, or quadruple booking. You are a hair dresser and if you took the time to treat your customer's right you wouldn't have to double book to make money. read more

The ladies at Straight or Knot are the best group of stylist I have ever seen! They have the best customer service. While there you can enjoy hot tea, coffee, water, and snacks. They pay for it out of their pocket to have for the customers!! Each year, they have a customer appreciation in which they provide food & drinks, hair models and they put on a show for us!!They also award some customers with plaques for outstanding service. They bring in new businesses to market their product! I think this says so much about their character. Gabby does my daughter's hair; she is very gentle and loving with children. My daughter has been getting her hair done since 4 and she's almost 7. She has NEVER cried not one time. Plus Gabby always accommodates my crazy schedule and last minute requests. I once let another lady do my daughters hair for a hair show and she cried the entire time; never again. Liz is also a doll! She is very direct, nurturing and honest. She will go out her way to please her customers. I've experienced it first hand bc she used to do my hair. The only reason she's not doing my hair now is bc its more convenient to get it done in the bay area bc I was working in Oakland. Liz also missed her other calling as a comedian. :) She is hilarious! Brandy is the owner of this fine establishment. I admire her very much as well. Always smiling and speaking to everybody. Such a family person...I love the relationship she have with her daughters and family (including Liz & Gabby). She is a business owner who truly cares about her staff and customers. Ruby has since retired but she was dfntly a pleasure and a rare find. There are two new ppl; a guy and a young lady. I don't know them yet but I'm sure Brandy will not let any bad apples in this bunch. Therefore, they have the whole package: great stylist, great accommodations, great entertainment (TV w/ movies), great attitudes, family-oriented, great laughs and most of all -a genuine love for people. Although I do not associate with these ladies outside the shop, their character while there is impeccable. Its truly been a pleasure knowing them. read more

NEVER NEVER AGAIN! I had made hair appointments for my 3 grandchildren weeks before. Lizzie Brown has never been one to be on time, but yesterday (8/14) was the worse ever. It was the day before school and she had overbooked and understaffed her salon. She assured me that it would be no problem as we had early appointments and her "assistant" would be working with her. When we arrived for our noon appointment, she said both girls would be done by 3:30. When I came to pick them up, they had not even started the 11-year old! I was absolutely flabergasted when she told me she "didn't know when" she would be done. Lizzy was defensive, non-apologetic and totally non-professional. My poor granddaughter literally was not done until 7:00pm at night.....seven hours AFTER her appointment. She has lost our business and we will not return. Buyer beware!!! read more

She is very detailed and precise she pays attention to her customer giving you her opinion but willing to listen to what u have to say and assisting u with making a decision that is best for you. I was very satisfied with Straight or Knot at first, but on my last visit the daughter of the owner was told to wash my hair, she was not licensed or doing a good job, after I requested a licensed stylist the attitude of the owner and my stylist Gabby changed towards me, and became unprofessional. Later when Gabby was taking care of my hair she cut off at least 2 inches of my hair. I had expected a short trim, not a haircut of almost 2 inches. I had trusted her to care for my hair and to be professional in doing so. I still do not know why she decided, without consulting me to cut so much of my hair off. I would not recommend the Straight or Knot salon for anyone who really cares for their hair. read more

Brittany at Straight or Knot is NOT the one!! No stars will be given for the repeated lying beautician read on to see why. My husband brought our 9 y.o. daughter in and Brittany scheduled her appt. for 10am Saturday 9/17/16. I arrived at 10 with 10 braids needing to be taken down. At 10:15 Brittany's next client arrived. Yes 2 appointments 15 mins apart. Brittany blatantly lied saying "I have to put a couple tracks in her real quick". Please be aware Brittany then proceeded to give her 10:15 a sew in half weave! Ask anyone how long this will take. Brittany had my daughter under the dryer in platts, and while still weaving her other client Brittany informed me that she needed my number because she had to leave and she would call me when she returned so I could bring my daughter back! Well I never heard such a thing! She did not ask if I had plans and obviously didn't care. I came back ONLY because Monday was picture day believe that! Brittany called an hour and a half later saying she was back at the shop and I can bring my daughter back. I left Vallejo returned to the Salon and Brittany was NOT there. The petite lady in the back told me Brittany had never returned. I replied, but she called and said tshe was back! You meam she called me up and straight lied to me? The petite stylist was at a loss for words. Brittany's lying azz came in approximately 15 minutes later. I then asked Brittany why would she call me and flat put lie and she had the nerve to get smart and say "why you didn't tell me you were going to Vallejo?" I was OUTDONE!! Abd we definitely had an argument from there. As Brittany was OUT OF LINE. I would like to add that this was our first visit to this salon. First time I met Brittany, first time I EVER heard a stylist tell their client to come back later in the midfle of getting their hair done and these were Brittany's only appointments on this Saturday. She definitely could have been more professional, could have scheduled better, communicated better and been more courteous.... Brittany at Straight or Knot is NOT the one.
