I have never had anyone give me a scalp massage and shoulder neck massage (brief but it was a minute of heaven) and I am coming back just for this. Obviously I live in Vegas but I guess now I'll be getting my hair done in Newport! I got a simple trim and she beautifuly framed my face and I feel so much lighter. Attempting to add photos once again to go along with my review because I don't see them with my initial post Went in for root touch up and ended up with hair so fried I had to cut it all off. Over-processed, overlapped, and sloppy job because she was running out of time. I've kept this review in my drafts but it's been months of struggle and thousands of dollars in products and hair cuts to make this right and I just don't feel right about not saying something. This was days before an incredibly important week of work, and since then l've spent so much to try and save my hair but I ended up literally chopping it all off which was very expensive and will continue to be expensive. Not to mention the emotional rollercoaster that it's been going from long to super short. If you have thick curly porous hair I don't recommend going here. I saw so many stylists overlapping their lightener and sticking women under the heater which I've learned is the "lazy" way of highlighting. There are much better ways that are healthier for the hair My session started our normal but the stylist was frustrated when my hair would t lift like normal hair so I sat under a dryer for the longest time. She was running short of time and clearly wasn't going to accommodate me so she put more processor over sloppily (which you can tell from the photos) and took me to wash and that's when she started telling me she didn't have time for a cut or blow dry. I didn't suspect anything because it was my first time going light and getting root touchup. Itold her it was fine and I'll dry it at home, I tipped her and checked out and noticed as my hair was air drying that there were these thing, strongly, pasta-like white strands that looked like elastic threads every time I ran my fingers through my hands. My hair was fried and falling out in clumps and I started having a panic attack BUT even through my panic I was still reasonable. I didn't want the stylist to help me with anything as she had offered (I mean can you blame me?) and eventually she refunded me. It still doesn't make up for all the emotional stress, money, and time it took to sort things out. Even then I'm stuck with a pixie cut that I'm painfully growing out that reminds me of the massive mistake I made going to this salon because of positive Yelp reviews. That's the reason I'm finally writing my review months later.. I'm still traumatized. It'll take at least 5 years to grow my hair back out because of this stylist's poor judgement. She could have easily told Me she couldn't do it and I would have appreciated it! read more

Strands is a stunning hair studio located on the coast highway. From their fast friendly staff to their adorable location, I loved this studio. With a wife range of products ranging from shampoos to CBD hair therapy products, this place knows their stuff. Upon arrival, I was greeted by a friendly receptionist who grabbed my stylist. I had Jennifer as my stylist for my bridal hair trial and I was blown away by her skill! I walked in with my hair a mess and she made it look fabulous. She was so funny and sweet, she has me so excited to have her get me ready on my big day. By the time I left my hair looked amazing! Not only did she do exactly what I wanted but she pointed out little things we could possibly change or adjust for the big day which I loved. Got my haircut here for the 1st time and OMG, this place is a little gem. Its hard to find, kinda like a speakeasy hair salon. The interior is gorgeous, the people are so nice. Will cut my hair with the assistance of Gary (the owner) & was so friendly and amused me with all my question about his cute shop. 1000% yes to Strands Hair Studio! I decided to finally sit down and write this review because I am so impressed with my experience here. Most importantly, I found the most talented hair color & stylist/artist in Orange County (specifically Newport/Corona Del Mar area). Her name is Marlene, and she is extremely talented, not to mention- super passionate about what she does. I was referred to her through a friend while in nursing school and I communicated with Marlene via Instagram. She is very friendly, down to earth, patient, and full of heart. During Covid-19, it has been one of the biggest struggles to find a hair/beauty spot due to government regulations. After rescheduling a few times to find a perfect appointment date, we finally made it happen and I am so pleased with the results! Unlike most hair artists, Marlene made sure to do a hair strand test/ consultation before our actual appointment; this was to ensure that my hair was strong enough to bleach well, given my past exposure to chemicals and hair dye. She was also very informative and open to sharing her hair technique and process with me; I found it so interesting to learn about hair composition and products to consider. I cannot express how beautiful my hair looks after a good year of long, split ends and hair damage with past baylayage color. *The studio itself is very modern and has a beautiful interior design, I felt super comfortable and welcome inside. Strands Hair Studio has a nice vibe, especially because it's located near the beach. The studio has a little parking area in the rear (but has only 4-5 spots). Parking was never an issue for me! This young woman is so wonderful- she does hair cuts for both men and women, along with corrective color, baylayage color, and extensions! Marlene works very well with her clients to make sure they are completely satisfied with their hair experience; she is constantly making sure that she meets her client's needs and I cannot be happier having her take care of me! I had a good 5ish hours in the hair studio and even though we were strangers at first, I feel like I've known her for ages. She has such a beautiful soul and I can see her shine through her work. I had no high expectations for a new hair color but aimed for an ashy or blonde baylayage since my roots grew out. I also needed a hair cut because my hair grew super long during quarantine and ya girl needed that fresh look, haha. Marlene made sure that I was taken care of and listened to any of my concerns. The finished product was stunning and I have received many compliments for the new do! Marlene gave me some beachy waves to accentuate the color tones and highlights. I had the same hair stylist for my entire life until after I graduated from college and was in need of a change. I came across a LivingSocial deal for a trim and color treatment at Strands Hair Studio in Corona Del Mar, CA, and I have to admit that I was a bit nervous to trust a stranger with my hair, but after going through the reviews on Yelp my mind was put more at ease. I took the next available appointment with a hair stylist by the name of Marlene Yim and crossed my fingers. Upon arriving at Strands Hair Studio, I loved the location and the general vibe of the studio, as well as the team of hair stylists that worked there. I was greeted with a warm welcome at the front desk and a huge smile from Marlene as she escorted me back to get started. From just that first appointment, I knew Marlene was a keeper! She listened to what I wanted, provided some recommendations, made my hair look healthy again with a great trim without taking off too much length, and introduced me to balayage highlights - and I have never looked back! Marlene is a genius colorist by the way! I have been coming to Marlene for five years now since 2013, so when it came time to choose a hair and make-up stylist for my wedding this year on July 28, 2018, I knew just the person to ask. Marlene and I knew each other's sense of style, both in personality and beauty concepts, so it did not take long for us to devise a plan that thankfully fit our budget. We emailed back and forth a couple of hair and make-up concepts, and scheduled a trial run to test out a few of our favorites. On the first go, Marlene completely nailed the make-up, so we decided that was the one for the big day. However, we were not as certain on the hair styles by the end of the trial run, but narrowed it down to the two we liked best, took some photos, and spent some more time considering. When I came back in for my color touch-up right before the wedding, Marlene (being the perfectionist that she is) decided she wanted to try the updo we decided on one more time to make sure it was absolutely perfect, and she nailed it - so we were officially set for my complete look! The big day arrived, and Marlene brought a friend and fellow hair and make-up stylist, Ian Bannon, to assist. Marlene and Ian were the beauty team for not only me, but also the five other ladies in our wedding party. Despite not having definite hair and make-up concepts for each of the ladies in advance, Marlene and Ian were calm, collected, and creative in coming up with concepts on the spot that made each of them look and feel their best. I tried a new hairdo from a new stylist and wasn't the happiest, so since Strands is just down the street from me in CDM, I decided to stop by and see if they could fix it easily. Dominique, the stylist who greeted me and listened to my sob story immediately had a plan of attack, got me in a chair with a glass of wine within a half hour, and 90 minutes and $90 later after tip I was loving my new locks. This was so convenient given my busy schedule, and the final product was fabulous! I will absolutely be back for future cuts and color with her. She put a protective barrier on my skin first to prevent the brown halo. It was a last minute appointment and they fit me in, which was awesome! This cute, quaint hair salon is a hidden gem in CdM. Great ambience (clean modern decor with great light), great products (Bumble & Bumble is one of my favs) and great stylists (I recommend Gary the owner)!
